簪を贈るのは、要するにその相手に目をかけてるってこと。
武官から侍女に贈るなら恋愛絡みのことが多いけど、いつもそうとは限らない。
玉葉妃が侍女たちに装飾品を与えたのは、お気に入りで自分の身内だと示すため。梨花妃と壬氏が猫猫に簪を渡した理由はそれぞれ違うけど、どっちも要は猫猫を気に入ってるってことだ。

They're outwardly visible signs of status and favor.

Giving someone hairpins is basically showing favor to that person.
Often romantic if it's from a military officer to a lady-in-waiting, but not always.

Gyokuyou gave her ladies-in-waiting accessories to basically show that they're favored and in her circle, Rifa and Jinshi gave Maomao hairpins for different reasons but basically means they like her.

俺の理解だと（違ってたらごめん）、男たちが猫猫を「自分のもの」だって主張してるような感じ。簪の質が何かしらの格を表してて、豪華な簪ほど関わってる相手の位が高いってこと。

From my understanding (I could be wrong), it’s like the guys are “claiming” her. The quality of the hairpin denotes some kind of rank. Fancier hairpin, higher ranked person you’re involved with.

つまり里樹妃の毒見役は、魚で毒を盛ろうとしてたわけじゃなかったのか。ただのタチの悪いいじめだった。里樹妃の周りは性根の悪い連中ばっかりだな。あの子の境遇はほんとひどい。こんな*子供*が二代の皇帝の妃にされてたなんて、胸くそ悪い話だよ。

So Lishu’s taster wasn’t trying to poison her with the fish. She was just being a s****y little bully. Lishu’s surrounded by a bunch of nasty little skanks. Her entire situation is actually just f****d up. It’s pretty disgusting how this *child* has been the concubine to two emperors.

Lihaku sure changed his tone when Maomao offered him those “flower viewing sessions” at Verdigris House. Man’s getting access to the S class waifus at the best brothel in town. Maomao’s good. Those remaining hairpins are gonna come in handy.

This is going to be an interesting homecoming. Maomao got hit so hard by the old Madam, she puked her guts out lol. I think her pops might have been involved in selling her off. He doesn’t seem surprised she went missing…

The pleasure district looks good on the surface, but we know from Maomao that it can be very sketchy. Not sure the rear palace is much better, but perhaps it's safer for a young lady overall.

Jinshi and Gaoshun have a good relationship. As does Maomao and Xiaolan with their gal palness. Maomao didn't even know she can visit home. Boy, that guy has quite the attitude. But Maomao has some high class cards to play herself lol. Haha, I love how she plays her cards well, all of them, including the other hairpins. Gyoukuyou just having such fun with this whole thing. Jinshi's face is priceless.

Good for her, keeping her word. But what a welcome home from the old lady! lol. She's a fun old lady. Wonder what that dude will have to do with his muscles 😉 har. But, finally, Maomao gets to see her daddo. He sure took her being gone for 10 months well. Can tell he taught her a lot since he has apothecary tools in that house. That ending was a bit anti-climatic. Gone for 10 months and the dad had no reaction to her coming home.

前に手紙を書いてたんだと思うし、これこそ猫猫がおやじに求めてたものなんだよ。好きなことを話せる気楽な家族の関係。二人ともたぶんもっとひどいことを経験してきたし、もっとひどい目にあった人も知ってるんだろうし。

i think she written letter before and this is the exact thing mao mao wanted from him. The relaxed family relationship talking about things she liked. Both probaly lived through worse things and known people with worse things happen to them.

It's probably good for Jinshi's health that after Mao Mao went out of the Inner Palace using a different guy's hairpin, she decided not to try to entice Jinshi to be a customer of the brothel.

Although the worst part is her questioning his man status and if there would be any point to bringing him (and Gaoshun) to a brothel lol.

ほかの侍女たちが猫猫を可愛がるところは何回見ても飽きない。猫猫が趣味で本当に毒を食べてるって知ったらどうなることやらxD
猫猫はほんとに時代の先を行ってる。そんなものが存在する前から、もう科学捜査をやってるんだから。あとは銀の器についてた4つ目の指紋が誰のものか分かれば、毒を盛った犯人を捕まえられるのに。それと、先週ほかの人がもう説明してくれてたけど、里樹妃の侍女たちがなぜいじめてたのかを詳しく描いてくれたのはよかった。
後宮のしきたりについて、小蘭のほうが猫猫よりずっと詳しいのは笑う。どうやら猫猫は、もらった簪のおかげで、誰かが身元を保証してくれれば外出の許可がもらえるらしい。さて、猫猫が壬氏に頼むなんてありえないから、残る選択肢は残念賞の簪をくれたあの男だけってわけだ。
李白があんなタイプの男だとは全然思ってなかった。もっと気さくで、喜んで猫猫を助けてくれると思ってた。でもありがたいことに、猫猫はちゃんと準備してきてて、緑青館の売れっ子の妓女3人への紹介状を書いてきた。李白の反応が最高に面白い！猫猫を見下してたのが、急にどうしようってあたふたし出すんだから。残りの簪2本をちらつかせたのもうまい一手だった！猫猫にはほかにもツテがあるって分かったから、もう断れない。一生に一度の話を逃すのはバカだしな！
玉葉妃は間違いなく楽しんでる！翡翠宮に来た壬氏に真っ先に猫猫のお出かけの話をして、狙いどおりの反応を引き出してた。壬氏があんな反応をするってことは、それだけ猫猫を気に入ってるってことなんだよな。ちょっと気の毒だけど、同時にめちゃくちゃ笑える。xD
まさか猫猫があんな出迎えを受けるとは！思いっきり抱きつきに行ったところに腹へ膝蹴りってのは笑った。手荒い歓迎だけど、やり手婆は猫猫の親父さんの面倒を見てくれてたみたいだから、それはよかった。あと、白鈴は筋肉のある男が大好きらしい。かわいそうな猫猫！李白の腕の太さを考えると、たった1回の来店でかなりのツケを払うことになりそう。
10か月も娘がいなかったのに、猫猫の親父さんはずいぶん平然としてる！でも、猫猫が自分に起きたことを夢中で親父さんに話してるのは微笑ましかった。よくいる中国の父親みたいに、親父さんはずっと黙って聞いてた。でもあの最後の一言が気になる。猫猫には自分の知らない後宮との繋がりがあるってことかな？うーん…

玉葉妃の侍女たちが最高。愛情深くて忠実で、陰湿さがまったく無い。これまで出てきたほかの侍女たちとは正反対だ。里樹妃はあんな扱いを受けていい人じゃない。
小蘭の都合のいい知識と情報が無かったら、猫猫はどうなってたことやら。
正直、李白はまた毒の美少女に会いたいんだと思ってたけど、猫猫が高級妓楼のフルコースを売り込んだのは最高だった。で、かわいそうな壬氏が一番ひどい目にあって、それを玉葉妃が楽しんでるというおまけ付きw
猫猫の実家には相当な「家族」がいるんだな。そして李白はムキムキの筋肉のおかげで楽しい時間をゲット…猫猫の自腹でw
猫猫の親父さんがすごく落ち着いた人なのは、なんとなく予想どおり。でも口にしてる以上のことを知ってそう。とにかく、毒と関係ない理由で猫猫が心から嬉しそうにしてるのを見られてよかった。

Gyokuyo's ladies-in-waiting are the best. Their loving, loyal, and not at all catty, which makes a sheer contrast to the other ladies-in-waiting groups we've met. Lishu doesn't deserve that kind of treatment.

Where would Maomao be without Xiaolan's convenient knowledge and information?

I was honestly expecting Lihaku wanted to see the hot poison girl again, but Maomao selling the full high-class brothel experience was priceless. And poor Jinshi got the worst of it, complete with Gyokuyo enjoying his suffering lol.

Maomao definitely has quite the "family" back home. And Lihaku scored himself some happy time courtesy of his swole muscles...on Maomao's dime lol.

Somehow I'm not surprised Maomao's dad is super chill, though he seems like he knows more than he's telling. But it's nice to see Maomao genuinely happy for non-poison related reasons.

高順がわざわざ、また毒を口にするなって猫猫に念を押してたのが大好き。そもそももう酸化してるから、猫猫にとっては何の価値も無いんだけど。
かわいそうな里樹妃。玉葉妃の侍女たちはあんなに献身的で愛情深いし、梨花妃の侍女たちも本当に忠実なのに、里樹妃の侍女たちはいじめて馬鹿扱いしてる。先帝の妃だった子がその息子の妃になるのは趣味が悪いってだけで。本人にはどうしようもなかったことなのに。妃だろうと侍女だろうと、猫猫が人の命をあれだけ大事にしてくれることに感謝するべきだよ。
もちろん本物の暗殺者の件はまだ片付いてなくて、壬氏はすっかり疲れ切ってる。キャラを作るのもやめて、本当の怠け者で不機嫌な素の顔を出してるくらいだ。子供の頃からそばにいる高順だけが知ってる顔なんだよな。それに簪からすると、壬氏はかなり位が高いらしい。

李白は義理で配った簪のことなんて大して気にしてなかったし、毒の美少女にまた会うとも思ってなかった。でも三姫のおもてなし付きで高級妓楼のフルコースを味わえるって話を持ちかけられたら、断る理由なんてないよな。
かわいそうな壬氏。やっと来たと思ったら猫猫はもうほかの男と後宮を出てて、玉葉妃はその苦しみを楽しみすぎてる。そのうえ猫猫には男として数に入るのかまで疑われてる。

李白はラッキーだな。猫猫が（自分のツケで）来店代を払ってくれるうえに、白鈴は筋肉好きらしいから、この訪問はきっといい思いができるはず。
猫猫の親父さん！10か月いなかった娘が帰ってきてもすごく落ち着いた人だけど、猫猫は再会できて心から嬉しそうでホッとしてた。でも猫猫が後宮にいることについて、本人の知らない何かを知ってるみたいだな。

The freckles are back! Figures Maomao would want to look normal again, especially as she's growing in popularity around the rear palace. Though it does make you wonder when the next time we'll see her without makeup.

I love how Gaoshun needed to emphasize that Maomao not drink the poison again. Besides, it's already oxidized, it holds no value to her.

Poor Lishu. Gyokuyo's ladies-in-waiting are so devoted and loving, and Lihua's are genuinely loyal to her, but Lishu's are basically bullying and treating her like an idiot merely because they find being a consort to her former Emperor's son out-of-taste when she had no control over that. They should be lucky Maomao cares about life as much as she does, be they concubines or ladies-in-waiting.

Of course there's still a genuine assassin to be concerned about, and it's got Jinshi run ragged. So much so that he's dropped character and is acting as lazy and ill-tempered as he really is, the version of himself only Gaoshun knows from having been with him since childhood. And he's apparently pretty high up there rank-wise with his hairpin.

Nice Xialon! Letting Maomao know how she can finally get back home and see her dad again! She always has the best deets for her gal pal!

Lihaku didn't think much of his obligatory hairpin's he gave out, and didn't expect to see the hot poison girl again, but when she's offering him a chance at a full-course experience at a high-class brothel with service from the three princesses, who is he to say no?

Poor Jinshi. He finally visits again and Maomao has already left the palace with another man and Gyokuyo is enjoying his suffering way too much. On-top of that Maomao is even wondering whether he counts as a man.

Dang, Grams hit Maomao so hard she's puking sparkles!

Lucky Lihaku. Maomao is paying for his visit (and out of her own tab) and it sounds like Pairin is into muscles so this trip will definitely have a Happy Ending.

Maomao's dad! Seems like a really chill guy even when his daughter comes back after being gone for ten months, but Maomao seems genuinely happy and relieved to see him again. Though it sounds like he knows something about Maomao being at the rear palace that she doesn't.

前回のは、相手に学ばせるつもりの極端な教育だったんだよ。今回は処刑されかねないと分かってるから、その侍女をかばってる。それに前の侍女は、危険性をちゃんと知らされてたのにおしろいを持ち続けてたけど、今回の侍女はアレルギーについて何も知らなかった。妃へのちょっとした意地悪が本物の暗殺と一緒くたにされて、不当に罰せられることになる。

What she did last time was an extreme act of education with the intent that the servant would learn from it. Now she’s protecting the servant because she knows that the she may well be executed. Moreover, the previous servant held onto the powder despite being fully informed of its dangers, whereas the the servant of this episode was uneducated on the matter of allergies. Her petty crime of messing with the consort would be conflated with the actual assassination and she would be unfairly punished for it.

前の侍女はわざとおしろいを持ってたけど、悪意は無かった。仕える女性をより美しくすることが存在意義のすべてなら、その務めで周りが見えなくなることもあるだろう。
言い訳にするつもりはないけど、みんなの前での猫猫の反応はかなり衝撃的だった。猫猫にはすごく強い特徴が2つある。
1. 賢い
2. 目立ちたくない（わざわざ化粧でそばかすまで描いてる）
ならなんで、務めを果たそうとしすぎた女性相手にターミネーター全開になったんだ？働く者の命なんて安いと分かってて、あんな派手なやり方で暴いたら、たぶん死刑宣告になると知ってたのに。

The previous servant did keep the powder on purpose, but with no ill intent. If you're whole existence only has the purpose to make the woman you serve more beautiful, you might be blinded by this duty.

That's not meant as an excuse, but I found Maomaos reaction in front of everybody quite shocking. Maomao has 2 traits that are very strong:
1. Shes smart
2. She wants to avoid attention (she even uses makeup to give herself freckles)

But then why did she go full Terminator on a woman who tried to do her job too well? While knowing that the lives of workers are worthless and that she probably sentenced her to death by exposing her in such a dramatic fashion?

評判がいいって聞いて一気見して、今追いついたところ。間違いなく楽しく見られてるし、猫猫が最高。一部で言われてるような傑作とまではまだ言わないけど、すごくすごくいい作品なのは確か。あんまり見たことのない新鮮な設定と舞台だし。
ラストからすると、親父さんにはまだ何かありそうだな。娘が丸10か月いなくなってたのに平然としてたのも含めて。せめて事前に、無事だけど2年くらい（理由は言えないけど）帰れないって手紙を猫猫が送れてたのかな。それなら親父さんの反応も納得がいく。
玉葉妃が壬氏をからかって楽しんでるのは爆笑。猫猫の同僚たちと玉葉妃は、一緒にいて楽しくて居心地のいいキャラだな。
あと、俺の理解が合ってるなら、妓楼のほうが白鈴に払ってお相手させるってこと？やり手婆の言い方だと、李白の腕が太いのが問題で、白鈴が李白にべったりになって、なぜかお金が絡むらしい。理解が合ってるなら面白いひねりだなw

So I just binged this series and catching up to it now after hearing people say it's good. It's definitely been a fun watch and Maomao has been great. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece yet as I've heard some people calling it, but it's definitely very very good. A refreshing concept and setting too that I haven't watched a lot of.

The end there definitely implies there's something more to her dad. Especially coupled with the fact that he was unbothered by his daughter missing for ten whole months. I wonder if Maomao was at least able to send them a letter beforehand saying that she's fine but she won't be able to come back for 2 or so years (without explanation). That would make the father's reaction more understandable.

Lmao at Gyokuyo enjoying trolling Jinshi. Maomao's coworkers and Gyokuyo are really fun, comfortable characters to be around.

Also if I'm understanding this correctly, is the brothel paying Pairin to stay with them? From grandma's description it seems like him having big arms is a problem because Pairin will be all over him and money is somehow involved. That's a funny twist if I'm understanding it correctly lol.

It's almost 3AM on a Monday. But its worth binge watching this gem from episode 1.

That clip of her poison testing in the Garden Party just lured me in.

毎回めちゃくちゃ短く感じる。話が始まったと思ったらもうエンディングが流れてる。

Every episode is so damn short. It's like the story just gets started and the credits are rolling.

今回ちょっと分からないところがあって。
李白のところに行く前に、猫猫は簪を4本もらった、2本は男から、2本は妃からって言ってる。それから「そのうち1人は大事なところを失くしてるから、男とは呼べないかも」って言って、壬氏のことを考えてる。
で、大事なところを失くしてるのはどっち？李白も特に何も言われてなかったから、宦官だと思ってたんだけど。

Something is confusing me in this ep,

Before deciding to go to Lihaku, she says that she got 4 hairpins two from men and two from the concubines. Then she says," Since one of the two lost his important parts, maybe i shouldnt call him a man" Then its her thinking of Jinshi.

So which of them is the one who lost his important part? Because i thought Lihaku was also an eunuch since they didnt say otherwise?

指紋の場面で流れてた曲、90年代のあるダンス曲をスローにしたアコースティック版みたいに聞こえた。どこかで聞いたメロディな気がするんだけど、誰か気づいた？

Hilarious episode as always. Jinshi getting trolled was the highlight.

During the fingerprint scene, there was a music track that sounded like a slowed down acoustic version of a specific 90's dance song. I felt like I recognised the melody from somewhere. Did any of you catch it?

正直、小蘭が過小評価されすぎなのはほとんど犯罪レベル。最初から猫猫の数少ない本当の後宮の友達で、後宮の噂や仕組みの情報源にもなってて、陰のMVPだよ。
あと、猫猫が一流妓楼とのコネをどれだけ武器にできるか（実際してる）っていうのが笑える。

It's kinda criminal how underappreciated Xiaolan is tbh. From being among Maomao's few genuine palace friends since the start and being her source of intel on palace rumors and mechanics makes her a hidden MVP.

Can't help but find it hilarious just how much Maomao can (and does) weaponize her connections to a top brothel.

I could see in a future story that MaoMao gets to have Xiaolan as an assistant picking her out from the servants of the rear palace.

I know!! I've been on a hunt for a game that will satisfy my ancient Chinese apothecary simulation cravings haha. I've found civilization-building games like Thriving City Song and Immortal Life, but not quite the game I'm looking for compared to Potioncraft. Sprittea is a game that's like Spirited Away in which you're taking care of a bathhouse for spirits. If I had the skills, I would create the game myself.

今のところ、この作品の脚本ほんと好き。
（ブサイクに化けてる）猫猫に李白が惹かれて手を貸すってのは、さすがに無理があったと思う。
一流の妓女（第1話でめちゃくちゃ美人だって描かれてる）に会わせるって賄賂で釣るのは、納得できるし見事な一手だよ。

It would have been too much of a stretch to believe that Lihaku would be attracted to (disgused as ugly) Maomao enough help her out.

Being bribed by access to top tier courtesans (who are established in ep1 as being very attractive) is a believable and brilliant chess move.

すっかりこの話のファンになった、全然足りない。今期が終わったら、これも読むものリストに入れるつもり。

I've become such a fan of this story, I can't get enough. It's another I'll be adding to my reading list after the season is over.

純粋に古代中国の文化をもとにしたアニメはこれが初めてで、やっと慣れてきた。明と宋が混ざったところに日本の文化要素が入ってる感じ。ファンタジーアニメがよく中世の中央ヨーロッパをもとにしてるのと同じで、ただし完全に日本流に解釈したもの、って今は見てる。
原作者が明代の中国にすごく詳しいのは分かるけど、中国語はそこまでじゃないみたい…たとえば後宮の女性たちに付けた名前が、あの身分の女性にはあんまりふさわしくないことが多い。阿多妃や里樹妃は上級妃のはずなのに、名前がすごく…普通で、古代中国の貴婦人の名前としては全然それっぽくない。それに猫猫がいた妓楼は緑青館（緑と青の館）って名前で、有名な妓女がいる店というより茶屋みたいに聞こえる。歴史的にそういう店は青樓と呼ばれてて、緑や青の字が入るのは確かなんだけど、実際の店名はたいてい、赤や香り、春や花にまつわる派手な名前なんだ。滿春院とか怡紅樓とか、もっと洒落た名前。ちょっと引っかかったけど、だんだん慣れてきた。日本人が考えたファンタジーの古代中国だもんなw

This is my first anime which is purely based on ancient Chinese culture, and now I'm finally used to it. It looks like it's based on a mix of Ming/Song Dynasties with Japanese cultural elements. I see it now more as how fantasy anime are often based on Medieval central Europe, but with a completely Japanese take.

You can tell the LN writer knows a lot about Ming China, but she doesn't know Chinese language that well... like the names she pick for the rear palace ladies are often kinda... not very suitable for ladies of that status. Names like 阿多妃 (Ah-Doh) or 里樹妃 (lishu) are supposed to be major consorts, but their names are just so.. ordinary and not at all expected for a lady in ancient China. and the brothel MaoMao worked at is called 綠青館 (green-cyan place), which sounds more like a tea shop than a place where famous courtesan worked. Historically those places are called 青樓 and have the word green/cyan in it, but in reality, they are usually more flamboyant names that has to do with red, fragrance, spring, and flowers, like 滿春院 or 怡红樓 some fancier name... it kinda stood out to me but I'm slowly getting used to it - it's a Japanese fantasy ancient China, lol

そうなんだろうね、詳しくないし。女性の服も唐の服に近いみたい。日本の着物のもとになったのがそれだから。日本への輸入はほとんど唐の時代に起きたし、唐の文化が日本の文化に近いのも分かる。でも男性の宮廷服は完全に明のスタイルだね。

Oh I have no doubt since I'm no expert at it. The female dress seemed to be closer to Tang dress as well, since that's the basis for Japanese Kimono; kinda make sense as Tang culture is closer to Japanese culture as most of the import happened during Tang Dynasty. Male court dress is very much Ming style though.

どう見ても猫猫は値切りと交渉をやり手婆から学んでるな。交渉の席で李白を完全に叩きのめしてた。
やり手婆も、あの人なりに猫猫をかわいがってる。猫猫にとんでもない値引きをしてやってるし、あの必殺アッパーのお出迎えもそれで説明がつくかも。第1話の商人は、1年分の稼ぎをはたいても三姫の昼の座敷にすら上がれなかった。李白も武官の1年分の給金じゃ一晩も買えない。なのに猫猫は、給金の半年分（それとも2年分の半分？）の前借りと、後宮での口コミで1日を手に入れた。俺は1年分の給金のほうだと思う。李白の保証があっても、2か月分の前借りならともかく14か月分は無いだろうし。
でもここで疑問が出てくる。猫猫の医学や関連知識は的確で、後宮の医官より上だ。その知識と経験の出どころである父親も、同等かそれ以上のはず（毒の知識は別。自分で毒を試すなんて、父親から見たら猫猫はマッドサイエンティストだろうし）。なのになんであんなに貧乏なんだ？腕のいい薬師なら商人並みに稼げるはずだし、猫猫は明らかに腕がいいんだから父親もそうに違いない。妓楼との付き合いもかなり儲かりそうなのに。

Clearly Maomao learned bargaining and negotiating from old granny. She murdered Lihaku at the negotiating table.

Old granny also loves Maomao in her own way as she’s giving Maomao a heck of a discount which may also explain the the upper cut of doom greeting. The merchant (first episode) couldn’t get a day viewing with his year’s salary with a princesses of the house. Lihaku couldn’t afford a night with an year of his military salary. Maomao got a day for basically 1/2 of an year or is it 1/2 of 2 years (?) advance on her salary and word of mouth at the palace. I believe an year salary as I can see the 2 month advance not 14 months advance even with a Lihaku vouch.

This brings up a question though. Maomao medical and related knowledge is spot on and higher than even the palace doctor. Her source of knowledge and experience, her father should be equal if not better (barring poison knowledge as father clearly thinks Maomao a mad scientist with the self testing). Why are they so poor? Apothecaries should be near merchant level of money if they were effective and clearly Maomao is and so must her father be too. Their associations with the brothel should also be quite lucrative.

猫猫が紹介状を並べていく場面は爆笑だった。

Reading the theories from people who are anime-only is super fun for me, coming from having binge read the light novel and web novel after catching up to the manga 😀

要するに：猫猫は下町時代に世渡りの術［生きる知恵］を身につけて、今回見られたような凄腕ハスラーになったってことがはっきりした。こんなにイカしたキャラを作った原作者とアニメスタッフにリスペクト。

TL;DR: It's become clear to me that Maomao got the game \[street smarts\] from her dayz in the hood \[lower income housing\], shaping her into the Jedi Hustler \[Oriental Hood Figga\] that we now see today \[in this episode\]. Respect to the author and the anime staff for making such a gangsta of a character.

Such a soothing vibe for Maomao to return home and sit and talk with her dad for hours. Seems like the Proprietor and her dad were chill about her being kidnapped since she skills to survive.

自分の理解だと、猫猫が持ってた簪は、あの店の三人の売れっ子妓女が猫猫にくれた「個人的なお礼」みたいなものなんだと思う。人脈を広げて出世する助けにはなるけど、猫猫に借りが生まれるものじゃない。
やり手婆が金を欲しがるのは、それがやり手婆の仕事だから。好意でもらったものなんだから猫猫が払う義理はない。それでもやり手婆は先々の稼ぎを気にしなきゃいけないから、猫猫が「いくらか」払ったことで少しは痛手が和らいだってわけ。
それに李白は店に連れていっても…「まあ合格」な相手だったのも大きい。金持ちではないけどそこそこの地位で、顔も良くて、軍でどんどん出世してる。当時の妓楼の仕組みからすると、店のほうから「先物買い」で招きたくなるような男かもしれない。あの店はもう繁盛してて「招待か紹介のみ」でやってるくらいだし。当時の政治の空気を考えると、李白が売れっ子妓女の目に留まったってことで、本人もさらに上に行けるかもしれない。なりたい地位にふさわしく振る舞って名を上げる、みたいな世界だからな。三人の売れっ子の一人と過ごしたって話せるのは、「出世株」としての大きな勲章になる。
全体としては猫猫に有利に転んだと思うし、やり手婆からも「役人や武官や廷臣をもっとうちに回しておくれ。できれば若くて顔が良くて金持ちのをね」っていう、ちょっとしたお許しをもらった感じだな。

From my understanding, the things she had were essentially 'personal favors' the three prominent courtesan of that house had given to maomao. Something that would allow her to network and further advance herself, and without any actual debt to maomao.

The Okami wants money because that's what she does as the okami. It's not something MaoMao is obligated to pay for, given that they do in fact seem to have been given out as freebie personal favors. But the Okami still needs to concern herself with a future revenue stream, and maomao paying *some* money softened the blow a bit.

It also helps that Lihaku was... *acceptable* to bring to the house. He's decently positioned, albeit not rich, he's good looking, and he's quickly rising in rank in the military. With how the courtesan houses worked at the time, that might be the sort of person that would be *invited* as a matter of "market speculation" by the house itself. The house is already prosperous enough that they operate under 'invitation or introduction only'. Also with how the politics of the time worked, Lihaku briefly getting the attention of one of the courtesans may further propel himself upwards; as it's a sort of thing where you act the status/rank you want to be and making a name for yourself. Being able to talk about having spent time with one of the three most prominent courtesans is a big notch in his belt for 'high rank'.

Overall I think it worked out in her favor and the Okami gave her some small permission of "send more officials, officers and courtiers, to us - preferably young, handsome and rich ones".

Why does Maomao look so supermodelly glamorous in the OP? Also the vocals sound a lot like Shakira to me. I love the art and animation of the OP and never skip it.
Every episode has been gold so far, I'm fascinated to see what happens next in Maomao's village.

As seen last episode, that is how she looks like if she was glammed up to the standards of the rear palace.

OPの猫猫はちょっとキャラが違う気がする。壬氏が猫猫を気に入ってる、ゴキブリを見るような目つきのほうは合ってるけど…あっちの面が出てくるのはまだだいぶ先だな。

It has placed me as a bit out of character, although the look that Jinshi loves MaoMao for of being looked at like a cockroach is accurate... it's still a long way for that side to come out.

it's hard to say with Jinshi's, what his actually means...

but the Liyha's one is maybe one that invites MaoMao to be liked by another concubine... as much as was said by the L-I-W that Gyo might not like that MaoMao has her jewellery....

Reality of where they are... it's a rough part of town they live in or nearby to... so if she did disappear, well hopefully she's not facing worse...
