It's hard to take this "I'm gonna die in one year"-drama seriously when you know she could swim in those magic items if she sells her ideas.

ガラスの入れ物に入れて何も吸えないようにして、ときどき餌をやればいい。伸びたら刈り込む。熱が上がってきたら、下がるまで少しだけ魔力を吸わせる。
危ないし秘密にしなきゃいけないのは分かるけど、必要なのは人目につかない小屋くらいだろ。まだ立ち上げたばかりの商売で年に金貨3枚も払うよりずっとマシ。その金は商売を広げるのに使ったほうがいい。

That thing consumed everything to grow rapidly.
Just put it in a glass container so it can't consume anything and feed it occasionally. Trim it when necessary. If your fever starts to go up then have it consume your mana for a little bit until the fever subsides.

I get that it's dangerous and would have to be kept a secret but all you would really need is a private shack. It's a hell of a lot better than forking over 3 gold a year while you're still a startup business. That gold would be much better spent expanding the business.

They don't know about magic, only the nobles learn about it. Plus it's a rare plant that appears completely randomly, it's not a guaranteed solution. And the merchants like Frieda, guild master and Benno would rather a plan that will make Myne indebted to them.

魔術具は高い。マインがベンノと契約した紙ですら高かったんだから、魔術具は贅沢品だ。贅沢品が安くなるのは大量生産されたときだけだけど、需要が無いのに身食いの治療用の道具をどうやって、何のために量産するんだ？　貴族が悪いとしたら、身分の対立につながりかねないから平民に魔術具を使わせないって点だけで、このちっぽけな問題を解決するには社会全体を変えなきゃいけない。

最後のパートでもう心がズタズタ。マインが仕えに出るより死ぬ日まで家族と一緒にいたいって頼むところから、妹があと1年しか生きられないと知って泣きじゃくるトゥーリまで。
でも本当に泣かされたのは父ちゃん。マインの話の間ただ一人泣かなかったのに、一人になったとたんに崩れ落ちた。みんなのために強がってたけど、この知らせに打ちのめされたのは他の家族と同じだったんだ。

That entire last act left my heart in tatters, from Myne asking permission to stay with her family till the day she dies rather than live in servitude to Turi just bawling her eyes out knowing that her little sister has just a year to live.
But the true sob moment was the dad who was the only one who didn't cry during Myne's meeting, only for him to completely break down when he was alone, he acted tough for everyone's sake but the news destroyed him as much as everyone else.

父ちゃんのところで完全に涙腺が崩壊した。号泣。高校の英語の先生が「作品の良し悪しは、どれだけ心を揺さぶられたかで判断できる」って言ってたけど、それで言えば10点満点。俺にとっては本当に今期のベストアニメだ。

The dad part was when I really lost it, like bawling. My high school English teacher said that you can judge how good something is by how it affects you emotionally. By that this is a 10/10. This really is AoTS for me.

鼻をすすってたから多少は泣いてたんだろうけど、「崩れ落ちた」ってほどではなかったと思う。火のそばに座ってる姿（作中で初めて酒を飲んでた？）には、悲しみと一緒に静かな強さも感じた。「よし、今は悲しむ時間を取る。でも娘のために強くならなきゃ」みたいな。つまり、次の回で父ちゃんが重要になるってことかも？　そう考えると、マインの父ちゃんについて俺たちはほとんど何も知らない。なんで（貴族か金持ちとつながりのある）オットーさんを差し置いて門の兵士の班長なんだ？→班長をやってる間に貴族や商人とつながりができた？→班長になる前からあった？→もしかして第1話に出てきた神官と何か関係がある？
たぶんただの願望で、あの場面は父ちゃんが悲しんでるのを見せたかっただけなんだろうけど、父ちゃんのカットで回が終わったからそんなことを考えちゃった。

While I agree that the dad probably cried some from how he sniffled, we didn't really see him "break down" I don't think. When I saw him sitting by the fire like that, (drinking alcohol for the first time in the show?), I personally saw sadness but also saw a quiet strength in a "alright I'm taking my time to be sad right now, but I need to be strong for my little girl" sort of way. Essentially, I took it as a way to show that the dad might be important next episode? Which made me think about how little we know about Myne's dad, Why is he a captain in the city guard over Otto-san(who has connections to a noble/rich person)?-> Has he developed relationships with any nobles/merchants in his time as the captain?-> Did he have any from before he was captain? -> Maybe the dad is connected to the Head Priest we saw in episode 1 somehow?

Probably just wishful thinking and the scene was just meant to show the dad mourning, but the way the episode ended with the shot of the dad just got me thinking like that.

最後は胸にきた。小さな我が子に「家族と一緒に家で死なせて」って頼まれるなんて、どれだけつらいか想像もつかない。父ちゃんと小さな髪飾りの最後の場面も。この瞬間を本当に見事に描いてた。

Those feels at the end. I can't imagine how hard it would be listening to your little one asking if she could stay home with her family and pass away. That final scene with the father and her little hair pin too. That really did a great job capturing this moment.

マインが元気になってあんなに喜んでたのに、そのあと現実に打ちのめされるんだもんな。
それにマインは新しい家族を完全に受け入れてる。もうすぐ死ぬと分かっていても、見捨てないくらいに。

They were so happy that Myne became healthier, only to get crushed by reality afterwards.
And Myne also completely accepted her new family. To the point that she won't abandon them even with knowing that she'll die soon.

本より家族を選んだんだから、それがすべてを物語ってる。

She even chose her family instead of her books, and that tells a lot.

うわ、最後の場面で泣き崩れた。あの助けを求める声が胸をえぐって、マインを抱きしめて「大丈夫だよ」って言ってあげたくなった。残りあと3話か。ずっと続いてほしい。

Damn I broke down into tears in those last scenes- that plea for help was so heartbreaking that I wanted to go hug Myne and tell her everything is going to be alright -only 3 more eps to go. I want it to go on forever

見始めたときは、マインが自分で本を書いて、みんなに字を教えたりするかわいくてほっこりしたアニメだと思ってた。不治の病と CLANNAD 級の泣きは予想してなかった。
あんなに幸せで仲のいい家族が、末っ子が死ぬという現実の重さに崩れていくのは胸が張り裂けそうだった。優しいトゥーリが泣きながら必死にマインを抱きしめてるのを見て、涙ぐまずにはいられなかった。
そして最後の最後……父ちゃんはずっと強がってたんだよな。家族のためには自分しかいなかったから。本当に尊敬する。俺ならあんなに持ちこたえられなかった。みんなが寝て、やっと溜め込んだ感情を吐き出せて、酒を飲みながら泣いてる姿にはグッときた。
本気で泣いたアニメの場面は絶対に忘れない。今日、思いがけずそのひとつを経験した。

When I first saw this series, I expected a cute, comfy show where she writes her own books and teaches people to read or something. I did not expect terminal illness and Clannad-level feels.

Seeing such a happy, loving family break down as the weight of the truth of their youngest daughter dying was heartbreaking. Couldn't help getting teary eyed seeing sweet Tuuli crying and hugging Maine for dear life.

And then the very last part... the father was putting on a strong front this whole time. He had to for his family since no one else could, and I greatly admire him for that, I don't think I couldn't have lasted that long. When everyone was asleep he could finally release all those bottled up emotions, and seeing him drinking and crying his heart out got me hard.

Scenes in anime that make me truly cry I never forget, and I unexpectedly just experienced one of them today.

第1話を未来の場面から始めたのは、見てる側のストレスを耐えられる程度に抑えるための、なかなか賢い選択だったっぽいな。

Starting the series with that flash-forward is looking like a pretty shrewd choice to keep the stress level of the show bearable.

こんなに泣くとは思わなかった……マインの家族が大好き。

I did not expect to cry this much...I love her family.

愛する人たちと一緒に死ぬか、くたびれたじじい貴族の妾になるか。うわ、ひどい二択だな。この状況そのものが胸くそ悪いし、魔力を持った女の子を囲うために貴族がわざと治療を出し渋ってるようにしか思えない。
貴族を打倒せよ！
それにしてもマインの家族の場面は本当に胸が張り裂けそうだった。父ちゃんが娘を助けるために何か無茶をしないか心配。

Dying with those you love or becoming a concubine for some crusty old noble, jeez that's a s****y choice. Though this whole situation stinks and it really feels like the noble's are purposefully withholding treatment so that they can enslave magical girls.

The whole scene with Main's family was utterly heart breaking though and I wonder if her dad is going to do something reckless to get his daughter help.

魔力を持った女の子を囲うどころじゃないぞ。欠陥品をとんでもない値段で売りつける。魔法で平民を押さえつけて支配する。魔法の優位で平民より特別だと思える。
労働者の話を聞いたあとに、あの「革命に加われ」の名場面を選ぶセンスが最高。

Enslave magical girls way more than that. Sell defective items for huge amounts. Use magic to keep the commoners in line and thus rule. Magic advantages so they feel special over the commoners.
Love you picking that great join the revolt scene after listing to the workers.

たぶん、あの青い髪の神官がマインを救うんじゃないかと思う。ただフリーダと違って、その貴族はマインの知識が目当てなんだろうけど。

I can only guess that blue haired priest guy might be the one that saves Main. But unlike Frida, the noble wants Main for her knowledge

まるで病気そのものが敵みたいだ。今のところ本当の敵はいない。いちばん敵っぽいのはトロンベだけど、あれは毎回出てくる怪物みたいな扱いだし。現実と同じで、取引ではたいてい双方が得をする。ベンノもギルド長もフリーダも、マインとの商売で得をしたいのは見え見えだけど、みんな友好的だ。
最初の敵が出てくるのを待ってる。今の問題が片づきかけたころに出てくるんじゃないかな。

It's as if the enemy is the disease itself. There are no real enemies yet up to this point. The trombe is the closest thing to an enemy so far and it's a monster-of-the-week type. Like in real life, both people in a trade deal usually end up winning; Bennou, the merchant guildmaster and Frieda are all friendly even though they all clearly want to benefit from a business relationship with her.

Waiting for the first enemy to show up. I am thinking one will show up when the current conflict is almost resolved.

放送中のアニメでこんなに泣いたのは久しぶりだ……この最高のアニメの2期が決まって本当にうれしい！

Well I haven't cried that much for an airing in awhile...so happy we're getting a second season of this amazing show!

うわ、身食いが一時的に何とかなってからは、ほとんどずっと楽しく笑って見てたのに、最後に家族に「あと1年しかない、離れて暮らすくらいなら死を選ぶ」って言うところで完全に打ちのめされた。
いつか根本的な解決策を見つけるのは分かってるけど、それまでに何度か泣かされるんだろうな。

Damn, most of the episode I was happy and laughing after her devouring was temporally dealt with, but that part at the end when she tells her family that she basically has just one year, and she will rather die than to be away from them really crushed me.
I know that she will find a permanent solution eventually, but I'm sure that I will be shedding some tears before that finally happens.

こんなに泣ける回なのに、エンドカードがかわいすぎる。ルッツは熱っぽくすごいって言って、マルクは控えめに趣味がいいと認めて、ベンノはすぐにどう金にするか考えてる。3人の性格を完璧に表してる。

Today's end card is too cute for an episode this heartbreaking. Lutz enthusiastically expressing how great it is, Mark stating mildly that he approves of its taste, and Benno immediately thinking about how to make money from it captures the personalities of all three of them so perfectly.

うーん……それだとフリーダにはどれくらい時間があるんだろう。あの世界では何歳で大人扱いなんだ？　成人式の後は貴族街で暮らすことになるって言ってたけど。

Hmm... Do we know how long that gives Frieda and when they are considered adults in that world ? She mentions that she will need to go live in the nobles' quarter after her coming of age ceremony.

いやいや、マインなんて……6歳？　なのにもう高額の取引を交渉して、命がけの契約にサインしてるんだぞ。この世界の「大人」の定義はとんでもなく早いんじゃないか。

Hell, Main is what... six? And they’ve already got her negotiating expensive trade deals and signing life-or-death pacts. I fear this world’s definition of adulthood may be real f*****g soon, kids.

最後の父ちゃんの場面で完全にやられた……

The dad scene at the end broke me completly...

父ちゃんのかすかな嗚咽が、とどめの一撃だった。

Those barely recognizable sobbing sounds dad made were like the final nail in the coffin.

その前の場面で、3人がベッドで寄り添って寝てて、父ちゃんがいなかった。そこで一瞬で来た。父ちゃんは眠れないんだろうなって。みんなの前で強がってたのが見て取れたから。そしたら次の場面で、一人で座って酒を飲んでる。そこで完全に崩れた。
このアニメ、ほんとに……

The scene before, when they showed the 3 of them in the bed, cuddled up, no dad. That's when it hit for me, like instantly, as I thought that he would not be able to sleep, he was putting on a facade in front of them to keep strong, and you could tell. Than, the very next scene, he is sitting there, alone, drinking alcohol. Than I just broke.
This show, man...

最後にみんながマインのベッドに集まって寝てるのはすごく心温まると思った（前の場面ではそれぞれのベッドで寝てたから、その対比で）。でも父ちゃんがいないのに気づいた。瓶を手に火をじっと見つめてる姿は胸が潰れそうだった。顔を見せなかったことで、どんな気持ちでいるのか想像させられて、余計に張り詰めた。父ちゃんがこの先何か思い切った手を打つのかな。今まではマインの家族は物語の背景にいる感じで、ルッツやベンノほど話を動かしてこなかったから。

I thought it was really touching to see them all piled up in Mine's bed in the end (as a contrast to a previous scene just had them all sleeping in their separate beds), but then I noticed that the dad wasn't there. It was crushing to see him just gazing into the fire with a bottle of drink; that the chose not to show his face amped up the tension because you imagine what he must be going through. I'm wondering if he's going to be taking any drastic measures in the future because so far Mine's family have sort of been playing a background role in the story and not driving it as much as Lutz or Benno have.

「金持ちを食え！」って叫ぶのは、普通はとんでもない大富豪に向けてなんだよ。要するにこの世界でいう「億万長者」の存在な。知らない人と億万長者の是非を語りたいわけじゃないけど、百万長者と億万長者は全然別物ってことは知っといてくれ。10億ドルも持ってるってのは、たいてい仕組みの穴を突いてるってこと。この作品だと、金持ちが魔術の知識と使い道を独り占めしてて、その身分に生まれなかった人みんなが割を食ってる。俺らの世界だと、億万長者はコスト削減とかで労働者を搾取してる。まあそういうことだははは。
とにかく、そんな深刻な話じゃないのは分かってるよwww　良い一日を！

Usually, when people exclaim "Eat the rich!" it's towards insanely wealthy people. Basically the existence of "billionaires" in this world. Now I don't really want to discuss the morality of being a billionaire with a stranger; but just know that a millionaire and billionaire are two very different things. Usually owning a billion dollars means exploiting some sort of hole in a system. In this situation, the rich are monopolizing the knowledge/usage of magic, which is harming anyone not born in their caste. In our world, billionaires exploit their workers to cut costs etc. Ya know hahah.

この作品には全部が詰まってる。友達とケーキを作る楽しさ、商売の駆け引きの機微、人付き合いの微妙なやり取り。迫りくる死の重たい悲しみと、愛する人たちと一緒にいられるささやかな喜び。それを全部1話でやったんだ。ああもう、この作品大好きだ

This show has all the things in it. It has the happiness of making a cake with a friend, it has the nuance of business decisions and and the subtle ways we interact with others. It has the crippling sadness of imminent death and the simple joy of being with the ones we love. And it had all that in a single episode. My god do I love this show.

This is like watching Yuru Camp only to find it slowly turning into a full blown Horror Survival series near the end.

癒やし系の作品って悲しさを思いっきり上げられると思うんだよな。ストーリー主導の作品よりずっとキャラの成長に頼らなきゃいけないから、キャラ描写の土台がしっかりしてる。キャラに思い入れができたら、ちょっとした挫折（あるいはでっかい命に関わる挫折）だけで一気に緊張感が上がる。ゆるゆりでも気づいたんだけど、95%はドタバタと癒やしで、5%が*感情*なんだよ。
冒頭の神官長の場面がすごく好きなのは、最後はなんとかなるんだろうなって思えるところ。マインがあっさり死んで悲しい結末になるんじゃないかっていう、ハラハラした絶望感は一度も感じない

I feel like with comfy series, you can crank up the sadness because they have a solid foundation in character work because it has to lean on character development, a lot more than other more plot-driven narratives. Once you're invested in the characters, it only takes some little setbacks (or huge, mortal setbacks) to up the stakes. I've noticed this in Yuru Yuri which is 95% hijinks and comfy, but 5% *emotions*.

What I really like about the very beginning scene with the Head Priest is that I'm pretty sure things are going to end up okay. I never get a nervous hopelessness that Mine's going to just die and we end up with a sad ending.

She should ask him to make a generator he can hook her up to, so she gets her mana drained and he gets energy that is apparently powerful enough to make giant trees in minutes and kill small children.

Im surprised Mine hasn't attempted or experimented with trying to cast some sort of spell or something as a means to burn off some mana. She must have read her fair share of fantasy novels before she died for inspiration.

I wonder if the solution is going to be a contract with the high priest we keep seeing in the previews, but not as a concubine. As a provider of information, perhaps? Benno could mention her unusual knowledge to a few connections and that's how we meet that priest.

Goddamn Nobles, they really have the monopoly on everything. If Nobles are the only ones who can use magic and survive the Devouring, then why do they still need the magic items that prevent it? Wouldn't it be more beneficial if they sell it to commoners that can afford it?

Her father showed very optimistic when Myne revealed the whole truth and he actually waited until everyone hit the bed to let it all out, it struck me like a f*****g train.

I kinda think he might end up going behind Myne's back to try to make a deal with a noble to save her. I know he knows it's not what she wants, but I get the feeling that he'd do pretty much anything to save her life, even if it meant never seeing her again. I mean, I think a lot of parents would do that.

昨日、試しに見てみるかってこのアニメ見始めたんだけど、もう11話まで一気に見て、最初はちゃんと見てなかったから1話と2話も見直した。世界観の作り込みが好きだし、キャラがみんな生きてるみたいで、他の多くのアニメみたいに話を進めるためだけにいるんじゃなくてちゃんと考えて動いてる感じがする。主人公が体の弱さと向き合わなきゃいけないっていうテーマも好き。この最高の作品と同じ系統でおすすめある？

I literally started this anime yesterday thinking ill give it a shot. I have no completed through to 11 and rewatched 1 and 2 cause i wasn't paying as close attention the first time. I love the world building and charcters all feel real and feel like they actually think and arent just there to drive the plot along like most other anime. I love the frail theme that the main character has to deal with. Can someone recommend something to watch that will be in the same realm of this amazing show?

また泣いてる。でも順番に。フリーダとマインのわちゃわちゃは良かった。結局マインを取り込もうとはしてたけど、お代を払わなきゃいけなかったとはいえケーキのレシピはまあまあの*贈り物*だな。フリーダが生き延びるためにこんなことしなきゃいけないのは気の毒。でも後半はトラックに撥ねられたみたいだった。家族の絆が最高で、特にマインがみんなにまた会えて喜ぶとこ、特に父さんと、父さんが何が起きてるか察するとこ。洗礼式の衣装のマインはかわいいし、つらい決断だったけど打ち明けたのは良かった。一番胸が張り裂けたのは最後の、母さんとトゥーリが寝ながらマインを抱きしめてて、父さんが打ちひしがれてるとこ。トゥーリはほんとに天使。マインがこれをどう乗り越えるのか本当に楽しみ

Well, I'm crying again. But in order. The fun between Frieda and Main was great, though they still tried to take her so even though she had to pay the cake recipe is a decent *gift*. Sorry that Frieda needs to do this all to survive. But the second half hit me like a truck. The family bonds were amazing, especially Main being glad to see them again, especially dad and how he realised what's going on. Main looks cute in her baptism outfit but even though it was a tough decision it was good that she told them. The most heartbreaking scene, especially the end with Mom and Turi hugging her in the sleep and Dad being broken. Turi truly is an angel. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Main will handle this

たぶん大げさに言ってるんだろうけど、ここ数話はちょっとした感情のジェットコースターだったよ。前半で積み上げたキャラ描写が実を結んでるんだと思う

They were probably being hyperbolic, but the past few episodes have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I think all the character work that was laid down in the first half of the season is bearing fruit.

EDはいつも感傷的になるけど、今回はちっちゃいマインが空の両親に手を伸ばすのがいつも以上に効いた。でもどんどん遠ざかっていくんだよな……今回だけは変わって、両親が拾い上げてくれるんじゃないかってちょっと期待した

The ed usually makes me emotional, but it was even more so this episode due to the little Myne reaching out for her parents in the sky. But she just keeps floating away...I almost hoped it would change and they'd pick her up

今回のEDで何か引っかかってたんだけど、今わかった。花に乗って漂ってるかわいいだけの映像じゃないんだ。あれは要するにあの世なんだよ……両親の「鳥」は、魂があの世に入るときの古代エジプトの描き方に似てる。

I knew there was something that bugged me about the outro this time. It just hit me, that it's not just a cute little thing where she's floating on a flower. It's essentially the afterlife... The parents "birds" look like Egyptian depictions of the soul as it enters the afterlife.

This is basically Myne's reincarnation of when she was Urano.

まあアメリカのは植民地の反乱だから当てはまらないかもしれないけど。
アメリカがうまくいったのは、植民地が100年以上もほぼ機能する民主制を許されてたから。イギリスで平民の権利が少しずつ広がってた結果だな。だから勝ったときにはもう安定した社会ができてた。それにアメリカのは全階級が反乱に加わってた。
もっとひどい崩壊を避けるには、改革に乗ってくれる貴族を十分に増やさないとな。
とはいえ、この仕組みをぶっ壊すのに必要ならフランス革命でも構わない。フランスはナポレオンで君主制に逆戻りしたけどな

American was so successful because the Colonies had been allowed to be mostly functioning democracies often for more than a century. A result of steady gain of rights for commoners in England. Thus with victory in America there was a stable society already in place. Also American was all classes involved in revolt.

Have to sell enough Nobles on reform to avoid harder melt down.

Still I will settle for a French Revolution if that is what it takes to take this system down. Even though France back slid into monarchy with Napoleon.

日本語のタイトルの「下剋上」には、社会の転覆とか革命っていうニュアンスがあるんだよ。英語のタイトル（Ascendance of a Bookworm）だとそれが抜け落ちてて、なんだかマインが天に昇る存在みたいに聞こえる。
ただ、話が「革命」に向かうのかは分からない。まだ憎むべき貴族すら出てきてないし。今のところどのキャラもすごくまともで、ベンノやギルド長ですら悪意で動いてない。
歴史的には、印刷機や活版印刷で読み書きが広まったことで、聖職者みたいに権力で大衆を支配してた集団から力が奪われた。でもこの作品はここまでかなりローファンタジー寄りで、マイン個人の話に焦点を当ててて、社会全体がどう変わるかまで引いて見せてはいないんだよな

In the Japanese title, the [gekokujou](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gekokuj%C5%8D) part does have connotations of societal upheaval and revolution. That's kind of lost in the English title (Ascendance of a Bookworm) which just kind of sounds like Mine is some sort of heavenly being.

Not sure if "revolution" is where the story is going though, given that they haven't even shown some nobles to hate on yet. Every character so far has been a very reasonable person who doesn't do things out of malice, even Benno or the merchant guild leader.

Historically though, the advancement of literacy brought on by things like the printing press and movable type took power out of the hands of groups like the clergy who wielded their power to control the masses. The series so far though has take a very low-fantasy approach to the story, focusing on Mine and her personal story and not really pulling back the lens to see how society changes as a whole.

井口裕香さんの演技が好きってだけで見始めたけど、さすがの仕事ぶり。ちびキャラの場面はいつも落差が面白い。
子ども向けっぽかったし、制作スタジオの過去作からしても見続けるとは思ってなかった。でも最初の5話を過ぎたらハマって、最新話まで一気見した。こんな展開になるとは思わなかった。ほんとに良い作品で、今回はたぶん今までで一番の回だった

I solely started this, because I love Iguchi Yuka's voice work and she surely delivers. Those chibi scenes are always such a funny contrast.

Didn't think I'd keep watching it as it seemed to be made for a young audience, especially given the studio's backgrounds. Though I got into it more after the first 5 episode and just binge watched up to the current episode. Didn't think it would go the way it did. That's some really good stuff right here and this episode was probably the best yet.

But even in the best case scenario with wholesome nobles, she's still pretty much locked up with them instead of being with her family

一言で言うと、美しい回だった。この作品は本当に出だしがゆっくりで、最初の数話は見続けるのがキツかったけど、動き出したら一気に引き込まれる。
今まで見た中でも屈指の世界観の作り込みで、ログ・ホライズン以来の雰囲気を感じる。話が地に足ついてて、よく書けてる。魔法ありの異世界ものなのに、何もかも地に足がついててリアル。MALの点数とレビューは書き直さなきゃな。2期の発表もあったし楽しみ。
今回は本当に感情を揺さぶられた。家族があんなふうに崩れるのを見るのはすごくつらかった

Simply put, that was a beautiful episode. The series really starts slow and it was hard for me to make it through the first few episodes, but once it gets going, you get sucked into it.

It really has some of the best worldbuilding I've ever seen and gives me vibes I haven't had since Log Horizon. The story is so grounded and well written. Even though it's magical isekai, everything feels so grounded and realistic. I'll def have to change my MAL score and review for it. With the announcement of season 2, I'm looking forward to it.

2) ベンノはそれを知ってる
3) マインはまだ*知らない*（俺の知る限り、魔術でしか治せない熱としか知らない）

ここからは推測：
1) 貴族はたぶん平民と体のつくりが違うわけじゃない。貴族が身食いにならないのは、魔力を持って生まれたら*使い方*を教わるから。たまって宿主を焼き尽くすことがない。
2) 魔術が貴族だけのものなのは、支配の根拠にするため、もしくは貴族の特権とされてるから。みんな貴族だけが魔術を*使える*と思い込んでるけど、実際は貴族だけが使うことを*許されてる*。
3) マインはそれに気づくはず。たぶん熱の原因が魔力だと知った瞬間に。最初の疑問はきっと「たまった魔力に食い殺されそうなら、たまに*使えば*いいんじゃないの？」だろうな。
4) マインは魔術の使い方を見つける。
5) 平民が魔術を使ったら、*たくさんの*貴族がブチ切れるかもしれない

So, if I'm remembering correctly,

1) the devouring is caused by mana building up in the body of a peasant

2) Benno knows this

3) Myne does *not* yet know this (she only knows that it's a fever that can only be treated by magic as far as I'm aware)

4) Only nobles can use magic, and thus mana.

Now, some conjecture:

1) Nobles are probably not physiologically different from peasants. The only reason they *don't* get the devouring is because when one of them is born with mana, they are taught to *use* it. It never gets the chance to build up and burn out its host.

2) The only reason magic is reserved for nobles is to provide a basis fortheir rule, or perhaps it is viewed as a privilege of being a noble. People accept that only nobles *can* use magic, when in reality, only nobles are *allowed* to use magic.

3) Myne is going to figure this out. Probably the moment she learns that her fever is caused by mana. One of her first questions is sure to be "If a buildup of magical power is eating me alive, why can I not just *use* some of it every once in a while?"

4) She's going to figure out how to use magic.

5) A peasant using magic could upset a *lot* of nobles.

完全に妄想だけど、最初の貴族の祖先が魔術具を作る方法を見つけて、身食いを食い止めたと想像してみて。
さらに、魔力を持てる体質が潜性遺伝だとする。
その貴族の子孫は生き残って、たぶん栄える（商業ギルドの扉みたいに、魔術具ってすごく便利なことができるから）。どんどん金持ちで強くなって、魔術具の作り方を独占する。その強みを使って特権を手に入れる。宗教に影響力を持って、自分たちは神々に祝福されてるんだ……だからこの地位にふさわしいんだって広める。そのうち自分たちの嘘を自分で信じ込むようになる。
こうして新しい「貴族」という種族の中で魔力の遺伝子が栄える。
一方、平民は魔術具が手に入らないから、魔力の遺伝子を持つ平民は死に絶える。その遺伝子が表に出たら……死ぬから、持ってる人は珍しくなる。こうして時間とともに、平民という種族から魔力の遺伝子が抜けていく。
そうして2つの新しい種族ができる。魔力との親和性が高い種族（貴族）と、低い種族（平民）

Pure speculation, but imagine that the first proto-noble found a way to make a magical item and thus stave off the Devouring.

Also, imagine that the ability to have mana is a recessive gene.

The descendants of that noble survive and maybe even flourish (since magical items can do cool/useful things, like the door the the merchants guild). They become richer and more powerful, and hoard the knowledge of how to make magical items. They leverage their advantage to gain privilege. They influence religion to spread word about how they are blessed by the gods... And thus deserving of their position. Soon, they start believing their own lies.

Thus the genes for mana flourish in the new noble species.

On the other hand, commoners do not have access to the magical items, and as such the commoners with the genes for mana die out, it becomes rare to have them because if the genes becomes dominant... You die. Thus, over time, the genes for mana filters out of the commoner species.

Thus we have two new species, one with a high affinity for mana (nobles) and one with a low affinity for mana (commoners) .

Nobles do not need to be better than the commoners to justify their power. IRL they weren't. They used the military power they had to enforce their ruling.

最初の貴族の家を興した人って、だいたい優れた軍の指揮官で、部下の忠誠を集められる人だった。
ヨーロッパ最初の貴族は、イタリアへの最後の蛮族侵入のときの副指揮官たちで、それぞれ公国をもらって公爵になった。後のフランスでも似たような感じだけど、主要な指揮官は伯領をもらって伯爵になった。
だから家の始祖は、普通は大多数より才能がある人、少なくともそう思われてた人。当然、子孫も始祖の資質を受け継ぐって考えだったけど、いつもうまくいくわけじゃないし、贅沢と権力は人を堕落させる。
もちろん才能があるからって他人より偉いわけじゃない。でもそれが実践されるようになったのは主に啓蒙思想の頃からだ。
みんな平等っていうのはキリスト教や仏教やほかの宗教の核心なんだけど、世俗のことにはあまり反映されなかった。特に他の教えとぶつかる部分があったりしてな

The starter of the first noble families normally a good military commander and able to gain loyalty of there men.

First European Nobles the sub leaders of the last barbarian invasion of Italy they each got a Duchy and thus were Dukes. Similar later in France but the key leaders got Counties and thus became Counts.

Thus the family starter normally a more gifted than most person or at least assumed so. The idea of course was descendants would inherit traits of the founder, did not of course work all the time, plus luxury and power corrupts.

And of course being more gifted does not make you better than other people. But that mainly a idea of the Enlightenment as far as being put in practice.

This everyone equal a core thing in Christianity and Buddhism and other religions but it did not often translate to secular things especially with other parts conflicting.

この場面が来るのは分かってた。どこに向かってどう決着するかも知ってる。漫画でも読んだし、原作小説でも読んだ。どっちのときも泣いた。アニメが一番泣けた。
これから数週間をどうアニメ化するのか楽しみでしょうがない。次のシーズン（と原作小説の続刊）も待ちきれない。完全にこの作品にハマってる

I knew that this part was coming. I know where it goes and how it resolves. I read it in the Manga. I read it in the Light Novel. Both times I started crying. The tears were worse for the Anime.

Man, I can't wait to see how they adapt the upcoming weeks. And I can't wait for the next season (and subsequent LN releases). I'm completely hooked on this series.
