テンポがかなり悪い。1話の中で大して進まないからってだけじゃなく、半分が彼女の心の中の独白で、話がいちいち途切れるからだ。ある程度は必要なのはわかるし、ちびキャラのカットインはかわいくて懐かしいけど、多すぎると思う。
あと彼女の「発明」は怪しいし、かご編みみたいな前世のスキルを都合よく持ち出してくるのも、あまり期待できない。

The pacing is pretty poor. Not just because she doesn't get much done in a given episode, but because half the show is her internal monologues breaking everything up. I appreciate that some of that is necessary, and the chibi cut-ins are cute and nostalgic, but I think it's too much.
Also her "inventions" are dubious, and conveniently pulling out past life skills like basket weaving isn't really promising.

しかしルッツは気の毒だな。マインに連れられて商人と話しに来たのに、ほとんど何も言わせてもらえなかった。Main（主人公）キャラの存在感に、脇役のルッツは完全に食われてた。話し合いの大半は、文字どおり画面の外にいたし。

Damn, being Lutz sucks. He was brought to talk with the merchant by Main, but he almost didn't get to say anything. The Main character overshadowed his side-character ass completely. He was literally out of frame for most of the conversation.

ルッツは6歳児の知識と性格しかないし、なんで自分が連れてこられたのかもわかってなかった。マインは取引相手を確保して、アイデアを全部ベンノに売らずに済むように、ルッツをうまく動かしたんだよ。最初から最後までマインが主導権を握ってたのは当然だ。
（ルッツにとってもかなりいい話だったけどな。これからはマインのアイデアに全部付き合う契約になっちゃったところ以外は）

He has the knowledge and personality of a six years old and didn't know why he was brought there. Main manipulated him so that she would have a trade partner and wouldn't need to sell all her ideas to Benno. It makes sense that she was in control the whole time.
(Lutz got a pretty good deal out of it too. Except for the part where he's now contractually forced to go along with all of Main's ideas.)

The Devouring sounds pretty ominous...But besides that Lutz and Main make a pretty good team. I have a feeling Lutz is gonna get in trouble for swiping measuring tools soon though. And Otto is giving me so many major Hughes vibes...hope he doesn't end up the same way...

正直、漫画版の「The Consumption」って訳のほうが好き

でも「Devouring（身食い）」のほうが魔法やファンタジーっぽいよ。「consumption」って呼ばれた病気は現実にもあって、結核のことなんだ。

Devouring sounds more magic and fantasy like though. A disease that was called "consumption" exists in real life too, it's tubercolosis.

なんで子どもに「何を売りたいんだ」なんて聞くんだ？6歳児にニッチな市場とか、何が売れて何が売れないかとか、何が必要で何が要らないかなんてわかるわけないだろ？
だからこそ普通は家業になるんだし、この世界じゃそれが現実なのもわかるけど、厳しすぎない？ 🙁

why are you asking a child what he wants to sell? how a six year old could possibly know about niche markets, what sells and what doesn't, what is needed and what is not?

i get that's why its usually a family business and that's the reality in this world but it seems so harsh 🙁

ベンノは最初から落とすつもりだったんだよ。仕事に向いてない小さい男の子を諦めさせようとして、兵士が「オーガを倒してこい」って言ったら、その子が本当に倒してきちゃった、みたいな話。

Benno wanted to fail them right away, it's like a soldier trying to fail a small boy not fit for the job by telling him to defeat an ogre, and he goes and does it.

それな。大きな夢を語る子どもを諦めさせるのに、大人がよく使う手だよ。（子どもの頃、親戚の大人の何人かに、手作りの小物を売りたいとか作家になりたいとか言ったら面と向かってバカにされた。今は本を出してる作家だよ）

This. It's a tactic a lot of adults use to dissuade kids from their grand ideas. (A few of my adult relatives would mock me to my face when I was a kid, about selling crafty items or becoming an author. I'm now a published writer.)

ルッツの商売の腕を試すっていうより、なんで商人になりたいのか、その仕事をどう見てるのかを確かめようとしてたんだと思う。
「独占契約の相棒が持ってるすごく価値のあるアイデアで儲ける」ってのは、商売の戦略としてはすごく堅実だよ。ルッツ本人は気づいてなかっただろうけど。

I think he was trying to gauge why Lutz wanted to be a merchant and how he viewed the job, rather than check if he is good a business.
"I'll profit of the highly valuable ideas of my exclusive business partner" is a very sound business strategy. Lutz probably didn't realize that, though.

今も楽しんで見てるけど、今回は作画が特に弱かったと感じた人いない？話し合いの場面なんて、表情がほとんど動いてなかった。

ルッツとマインはほんと最高にかわいいコンビ（今回は手つなぎがいっぱいで、尊すぎて心臓がもたない！！）。出会ったばかりの6歳児をいきなり出し抜こうとするあたり、ベンノは記憶どおりの抜け目ない男だなｗ マインのパパ、もう娘をめぐって男2人が張り合ってるとか気の毒に。
あとオットーがマインを追い払おうとする場面のこと、すっかり忘れてたｗ

Lutz and Myne have the absolute cutest partnership ever (so much hand holding this episode, its so freaking soft my heart can't handle it!!!). Benno's still the shrewd dude I remember considering he tried pulling a fast one on a 6 year old he just met lol. poor papa Myne already has two men fighting over his daughter now smh.
I completely forgot about that whole scene with Otto trying to get rid of Myne though, LOL

あの場面は面白かったけど、現実的な面も忘れちゃいけない。オットーの家は町の反対側で、マインは長い距離を歩くのがつらいし、知らない場所だし、行きはオットーが抱えて運んでたのに、帰りはひとりで歩いて帰らなきゃいけない。

that scene was funny, but lets not forget the practical side of it. His house is in the other side of the town, she has trouble walking long distances, she was in a unfamiliar area, he carried her on the way to his house, and now she needs to WALK back home ALONE.
The captain will murder him next day if he finds out ...

That sounds like something from an isekai based in a video game. Like, if if it was a role-playing server, if someone suddenly disconnected because someone kicked their modem I could imagine the rest of the party pretending they were consumed by the ever-looming void that is an unstable network connection.

ほんとそれ。狼と香辛料はラノベ21巻、本好きは今20巻で、最終的には32巻の予定らしいから、本好きのアニメは狼と香辛料よりずっと長く続いてほしい。どっちもいい話だけど、個人的には本好きのほうが上だと思う。

Definitely. And given that S&W has 21 LN and AoaB currently has 20 with a projected final of 32, I sincerely hope that AoaB anime goes far longer than S&W. Both are great stories, although I think AoaB is the better of the two.

本好きのほうが上？なんで？すごく気になる。狼と香辛料の2期の最初の章（たしか原作3巻）は、俺が見たラノベの話の中でも最高クラスなんだよ。物語シリーズの一番いい章と並ぶくらい。

Bookworm is better? Why? I'm really intrigued since the first arc of second season of S&W (I think it was the third LN) is one of the best stories from a light novel I've ever seen. Alongside with the best monogatari arcs.

I don't think TB gives you RGB eyes and makes you glow yellow.

Also her condition might be fatal even if she has magical glowey powers. This is the middle-ages, she might just need anti-biotics.

まさにそれが、マインの病気の訳語は「Consumption」より「Devouring」がいいと思う理由。「Consumption」だと、英語を話す人にはあまりにも結核と混同されやすい。

And right there you know the reason I think that "Devouring" is a better word for Myne's condition than "Consumption". Using "Consumption" makes it too easy for English speakers to confuse it with TB.

名前が出たとき、俺は最初結核だと思った。結核って人類の歴史のほとんどで同じくらい命取りだったし、今でもすごく深刻な病気だしね。

I thought it was TB when they first mentioned the name. Especially since TB was just about as deadly for most of human history and still is an incredibly serious disease.

なるほど、だからルッツはオットーに会いたがったのか。オットーは元商人で、結婚したくて商人をやめたんだな。でも商人に市民権を与えないってひどい制度に見える。商人に土地を買わせて町に住まわせて、持ち込むお金や品物に税をかけたほうがいいだろうに。
あと最後の場面はずいぶん唐突だった。子どもたちが「すぐ会いに来い」って呼ばれたと思ったら、もう話し合いが終わってた。

Ah, so that's why Lutz wanted to meet Otto—because Otto used to be a merchant but wanted to get married. It seems like terrible policy to exclude merchants from citizenship: why wouldn't you want merchants to buy property, settle into a city, and be able to tax all the money and goods they bring in?
That last scene was awfully abrupt. We went from the kids receiving an invitation to meet immediately to the end of the meeting.

町の中にも商人はいて、他の町へ行き来もできるんだよ。オットーがやってたのは旅商人で、要は市民権のないまま物を売り歩いて食いつないでる人のことを、聞こえよく言ってるだけ。ちゃんとした仕事じゃないから、オットーはルッツに「それはやめとけ」って言ったんだ。

There are merchants in the city that can also travel to other cities. He was a travelling merchant which is just a fancy name for someone without citizenship that peddles things to survive. It's not an actual job which is why Otto told Lutz to forget that.

じゃあルッツがなりたかったのは行商人だったの？確かにそれは大した夢じゃないけど、アニメではそこがはっきりしてなかったな。商人になるには市民権を捨てなきゃいけないっていう、変なファンタジー世界の理屈にしか見えなかった。

So what Lutz wanted to be was a peddler? Yeah that's not exactly a lofty career ambition, but the show didn't really make that clear, it just seemed like bizarre fantasy world logic that merchants have to revoke their citizenship.

上の人も言ってるけど、町の中にも商人はいる。一般にギルド＊は、町で自分の工房や店を持てる親方の数を決めたり、品質の最低基準を守らせたり、徒弟の教育をしたりしてた。困ったときに店を支えたり、葬式みたいな行事を手伝ったりする、助け合いや人付き合いの場でもあった。あと商人に対する交渉の連合みたいな役割もあった。
仕事が足りなくて店がつぶれないように、店の数はよく制限されてた。
よそ者や、住んでるけど市民じゃない人は、市民権を買う必要があった。特典があったからね。市民じゃなくても町に住めたけど、投票権や町の中の土地を持つ権利みたいな、いくつかの権利はなかった。細かい権利は国や町によっても違う。これは古くて成熟した町の話で、新しくできた町は人を呼び込みたいからもっと寛大だった。
追記：最後の場面は話し合いの終わりじゃなくて、最初の顔合わせの一部を、盛り上げるために回の最後まで取っておいたんだと思う。あの場面の最初の台詞は、最初の顔合わせの最後の台詞だったし。
＊職人のギルドの話だけど、たしか商業ギルドも似たようなものだったはず

As Moovies said, there are merchants in the city. In general guilds\* regulated things like the number of masters in the city who had the right to have their own workshop/business, enforced regulations on quality minimums, education of apprentices and stuff like that. They were also a social safety network and social network in general like supporting a shop in a crisis or participating/helping in social events like funerals. Also as some kind of negotiating alliance against merchants

The number of shops was often limited to prevent shops going bankrupt because there wasn´t enough work

You had to buy citizenship as an outsider or as a resident non citizen because it offered benefits. Non citizens could live in the city but they missed certain rights like the right to vote or own land inside the city. The exact rights were different from country to country or even city. That´s for mature, older cities, a recently founded one was more generous as it wantedto attract people.

Edit: I think the last scene wasn´t the end of the meeting, it´s a piece from their initial meeting they saved for dramatic purposes till the end of the episode. The first words in that scene were the last of her first meeting.

だよな、紙づくりの手順をどうやって引っぱり出してきたのか気になってた。たぶん最初から知ってたけど、パピルスや粘土板みたいに自分ひとりでできる方法だけに絞ってて、木のパルプから紙を作るっていう手間のかかるやり方は避けてたんだと思う。今は紙づくりに本気で付き合ってくれる相棒のルッツがいるから、望む規模に必要な道具を作るための、さらにその道具作りから計画する気になったんだろうね。

Yeah, I was wondering how she managed to fish up the whole process of making paper. I'm thinking she knew all along, but she was only focusing on methods she could do by herself (papyrus, clay tablets) rather than the rather laborious route of making paper from wood pulp. Now that she has a partner in Lutz who's committed to the whole paper thing, she's willing to plan out the foundation for building the tools necessary to build *more* tools required for the scale she wants.

そのへんは原作小説でだいぶ説明されてるんだけど、アニメは尺の都合でざっと流してる感じだな。

A lot of this is explained in the books, but they kind of skim through things for time purposes.

KONO BENNO DA!

この作品、見てみて本当によかった。まったりした空気も、マインが異世界の知識を少しずつ発揮していくところも、登場人物がみんな心優しいところも、すごく楽しめてる。商人のベンノでさえ意地悪じゃなかった。むしろ現実的でしっかりしてて、子どもたちを話の分かる一人の人間として扱ってたと思う。
この作品がどんなテーマやメッセージで組み立てられてるのか、まだ考えてるところ。一つ感じてるのは「夢を持つことには力がある」ってこと。本のそばにいたいというマインの強い願いが、弱い体をむしばむ熱をなぜか押し返してるのは、その比喩がそのまま形になってる。気持ちが揺らいだときには、あの黄色い光と虹色に光る目として表に出て、そのあと何日も寝込む。もう一つは「才能が花開くには周りの人たちの支えが要る」ってこと。マインは進んだ社会の何十年分もの知識を持った天才かもしれないけど、両親の世話、姉の明るさ、オットーの指導と人脈、ルッツとの協力があって初めて、知の世界をひっくり返すような発明を（再び）作り上げていける。これは現実の歴史でもよく言われることで、社会の大きな変化はいわゆる「偉人」の手柄にされがちだけど、実際は日々の暮らしに追われなくなって実験や発明に時間を使えるようになった大勢の人が、互いの発見を積み上げてきた結果なんだよな。まあマインは発見や発明の多くを最初から持ち込んでる（『2001年宇宙の旅』のモノリスみたいに）から、その過程をすっ飛ばしてるわけで、この作品が狙ってるのはそこじゃないのかもしれないけど。
このまったりした雰囲気がこの先も続いてほしい。異世界ものって殺伐としてて尖ってて暗いイメージだったから（最近見た異世界ものは盾の勇者で、1話からしてまったくまったりしてなかった）、自分の好きなジャンルにまで異世界ものが広がってるのはうれしい。

I'm really glad I gave this series a shot. I'm really enjoying how comfy the series is, how Main is gradually flexing her other-worldly knowledge, and how all kind-hearted all the characters are. Even the the merchant Benno wasn't mean; I felt he was more realistic and firm, talking to the children like they were people capable of understanding reason.

I'm still mulling over what sort of themes and central messages that this series is built around. One thread I'm picking up on is the concept that daring to dream is powerful, a metaphor that's made literal in Main's intense desire to be around books somehow beating back the fever that's wracking her frail body. The times where her will has wavered manifests literally in that yellow glow and opalescent eyes, followed by days of being bedridden. The other thread that I'm picking up on is that potential requires support from a community of people. Even if Main is a genius because she had decades of knowledge from an advanced society, she needs the care of her parents, the cheerfulness of her sister, the mentorship and connections of Otto, and the partnership with Lutz as the foundation to support (re-)building all the inventions that would revolutionize knowledge. It's something that's very salient in real-world history, where it's common to attribute major societal shifts with so-called "great men", the bulk of that work is a gradual then sudden accumulation of knowledge from many different people who were able to build upon each other's discoveries because they were no longer spending all of their time living hand-to-mouth, but had the free time to experiment and invent. Main just kinda comes in the picture with a lot of the discoveries and inventions pre-baked (kind of reminiscent of the obelisk from *2001: A Space Odyssey*) to short-circuit a lot of that though, so maybe it's not what this series is going for.

I'm really hoping that the series keeps up its comfy nature. I'm used to thinking about isekai series as being gritty, edgy, and depressing (my most recent isekai that I gave a shot was Shield Hero, which based on the first episode was extremely not comfy), so it's nice to see that the isekai setting expand into genres that I personally enjoy.

今回は商売の話が濃かった。ディオの声優さんの声が聞けたのもよかった（名前は覚えてないしジョジョも見てないけど、90年代から活躍してて、ウテナの生徒会長とか、エヴァのオペレーター室にいるメタル好きの人とか、プラネテスのユーリとかやってて本当にすごい）。マインはうまく立ち回ってたし、ルッツと一緒に真剣な顔してるのがかわいかった。狼と香辛料のクラフト・ロレンスも（どこかの狼に変えられるまでは）「商人の夢はどこかに腰を落ち着けること」に同意すると思う。マインの「発明品」を売るのはもちろんいい考えだ。オットーはいつもどおり最高だったし、奥さんとの話も素敵だった。奥さんもいい人そう。先週の出来事のあとで、ようやく何もかもうまく回り始めてて見ていてほっとする。これからも最高でいてくれ、本好き！

Trade is strong with this episode. It's nice to hear Dio's VA (don't remember his name and didn't watch JoJo but he's active since the 90s, voicing Student Council President in Utena, metalhead control room guy in Evangelion or Yuri in Planetes so I'm really impressed). Main handled the situation very well, and they looked cute and serious with Lutz. I think Kraft Lawrence from Spice and Wolf would agree (until some Wolf changed him) that every merchant's dream is to settle down. Obviously selling Main's "inventions" is a good idea. Otto was amazing as usual and his story with his wife is beautiful, she also seems like a nice character. Finally, everything seems to be going well, which is nice to see after last week's events. Never stop being great, Ascendance!

I love the details such as the difference in wealth shown by dresses of both Otto wife and Maine mother. Also they are wealthy enough that they can afford glass.

今回もいい回だった。この作品はいくら見ても足りない。今回のマインとルッツは最高のコンビだった。マインは横で支えながら、ルッツに自分の将来を自分で考えさせてあげて、ルッツはいちばんやりたいのはマインの発明を手伝うことだって決めた。
マインと友達や家族をめぐって、物語の糸が少しずつ織り上がっていくのが見えてきた。紙やほかの発明がついに注目されて、それが本につながっていくんだろうな。来週が待ちきれない！！

Another great episode. I just can't get enough of this show. Myne and Lutz were such an amazing double act in this episode. She was there being supportive, letting him figure his future out for himself, and he decided that the thing he wanted to do most, was help out Myne with her creations.

You can start to see how the threads of this story are beginning to weave about Myne and her friends/family. The paper and other inventions she's introduced are going to finally get attention and it's going to lead her books. Can't wait for next weekl!!

いよいよマインの体のことが分かりそうだな。あの光る魔法みたいな力が原因なのか、それとも逆にそれが彼女を生かしてきたのか。
ルッツはたぶん全部にちょっと戸惑ってると思う。マインは6歳児がやること、知ってることの何年も先を行ってる。ルッツも今回の面会でいい話をもらえたけど、マインは何もかも自分に有利なように運んでる感じだ。

Looks like we will finally get to know what her condition is. Wonder if the glowey magic powers is the cause or is the thing that has kept her alive.

Lutz is probably somewhat confused about everything. Myne is leaping years forward in terms of what you should be doing and know as a 6 year old. So while Lutz is getting a good deal out of the meeting, Myne is kinda manipulating everything in her favor.

マインのシャンプーを使った人の髪がいつもツヤツヤに描かれてる、みたいな細かいところが好き。貴族ですら髪がくすんでるのに。

I like the details in this serie like the fact that they always keep the hair of the people that used Myne Shampoo bright and shining. Even the Nobles have the opaque hair.

オットーって名前に日本語の敬称が付くと、敬意を込めて呼ぶ人はみんな彼を「お父さん」って呼ぶことになるの、いつまでたってもツボだわ。
さらに笑えるのは、マインは実際には異世界の言葉をしゃべってて、それを日本語に置き換えて受け取ってるはずだから、理屈で言えばマインがオットーを何度も「お父さん」って呼んでも父ちゃんがあそこまで怒る理由はないってこと。単なる嫉妬なのか、向こうの言葉にも似たような言い回しがあるのか、とにかくマインが新しい父親を見つけたみたいに気にしてる。
この作品好きだわ。

I'm never gonna get over the fact that Otto's name combined with Japanese honorific terms make it so that anyone who refers to him respectfully calls him "Dad."

What's funnier to me is that Main is effectively speaking an Isekai language and interpreting it through Japanese, so her father logically shouldn't have been as upset as he was about her calling Otto "dad" all the time, but either through sheer jealousy or analogous linguistic conventions, it still bothered him as if Main had found a new a paternal figure.

I love this show.

「おとう」と「オットー」はちょっと違うと思うぞ。前者は「おとー」で、2音目を伸ばして高いところから低く下げる。
この人の名前は「おと」で、どっちの音も短くて、1音目が高い。

I'm pretty sure that there's a few differences between otou and otto. In the first case, it's or-tor, with the second syllabus having be dragged out the high to low cadence.

The dudes name is o-to, both syllabus is shorter, and with the first syllabus spoken at a higher note.

The difference between Otto and Otou is that in the former the t sound is doubled, and in the latter the o sound is.

英語で出てるところ（Web版／ラノベ）まで追いついたんだけど、ベンノがアニメで動いてるのが見られて本当にうれしい！翻訳されてる範囲では一番の見どころだと思うし、ここしばらく読んだ中でも指折りの師匠キャラだ。
でもまさか子安武人がベンノをやるとは思ってなかった。これからのマインとのやりとりがますます楽しみになった。
あと原作小説の5巻が待ちきれない。話が本当にいいんだよ。

Oh man I caught up with what's currently available in english (WN/LN) and I'm so happy to see Benno animated! To me he is the highlight of what has been translated to far, certainly one of the better mentor type character I read in a while.

However I didn't expect freaking [**Takehito Koyasu**](https://myanimelist.net/people/160/Takehito_Koyasu) to be voicing Benno, now I'm even more excited to see his interactions with Maine later on.

Also, I can't wait for the 5th volume of the LN, the story is just so good.

When i saw Benno i said to myself "wouldn't be crazy if he was voiced by Takehito Koyasu?" Sometimes I really scare myself

ルッツは歳のわりにとんでもなく大人だな。まあこの作品の子どもはだいたいそうなんだけど、ルッツの落ち着きぶりとあの辛抱強さは子どもにはかなり難しいことだ。子どもに高い基準を求めて育ててる親を知ってるけど、それでもプレッシャーの中でここまで冷静ではいられない。
この作品の子どもたちはとんでもなく健気だけど、ルッツはその中でも別格。世界を変えるのはマインじゃなくてこの子だと思う。マインは何歳だろうと、ずっと人間くさいからな。

Lutz is insanely mature for his age. I mean, most of these kids are, but the way that lutz holds his composure and have so much patience is a huge hurdle for a kid. I know of parents who held their kids in high standards and they still don't have them being this collected under pressure.

Like, the kids in this show is insanely wholesome, but Lutz is just on another level. This kid is gonna be the one to change the world, not Main, who definitely is much more human-like whatever years old she is.
