やり手婆がこの社会を作ったわけじゃない（それに妓楼の正式な持ち主でもない）。この店の経営者や持ち主を消したって、女の子たちは自由にならない。そもそも生きるために稼ぐ手段が要るから、あそこにいるんだ。どこへ行けっていうんだ？　結局ほかの妓楼に買われるか、街角に立つことになる。そっちのほうがずっと危ない。

The old lady didn't invent this society (she's also not the legal owner of the brothel). Even if you killed the management/ownership of this brothel, the girls wouldn't be free. They're there because they need some way to earn money to live in the first place. Where would they go? They'd just end up being bought by some other brothel or having to walk the streets which is much more dangerous.

この作品の好きなところで、今回よく出てたのは、登場人物が現代の感覚を持ってないこと。奴隷まがいの身売りが悪いのは当たり前だけど、簡単に飢え死にしたり、さらわれて売り飛ばされたりする世界なら、比較的ましな道なのかもしれない。不正がどう見ても当たり前の時代や世界の登場人物が、今を生きる人間みたいな正義感で怒り出すと、本当にイライラするんだよ。

One thing I like about this show this episode highlighted is characters don't have modern day sensibilities, selling yourself into some type of quasi slavery prostitution is obviously bad but in a world where you can easily starve to death or be kidnapped and sold off it might be a relatively desirable outcome. It drives me up the wall when characters from time periods or worlds where some type of injustice is obviously common place will act with a moral indignation of someone living right now.

You know that “father” is horrible when his daughters chose to be courtesan-trainees instead of staying with him.
To be fair, the conditions of the Verdigris hous is much much better than what they experienced. Maomao in a way helped younger daughter narrowly escaping death from that irresponsible sperm donor. While being a courtesan was not the best life, it is an improvement to their impoverished condition.

In a world where options are limited, women have to make the most of the situation they're in and for these girls the Verdigris House was their best option. And it was frankly all Maomao practically could do for them in HER position.

Say what you will about the Verdigris House, from everything we've seen they treat their girls right as long as they can at least contribute something.

ばあちゃんは『店で働くなら見た目と健康が大事なんだよ』って言いそうだけど、根は優しいのはみんな知ってる。でなきゃ、猫猫の母親をあんなに長く面倒見てない。

Grandma would probably tell you that she needs these girls to look nice and healthy if they’re going to work at the Verdigris House. But we all know that she’s secretly a softie at heart. Otherwise she wouldn’t have cared for Maomao’s mom for so long.

To be fair Lakan wasn't trying to abandon Fengming to her fate and it would have never occurred to him to transform her into a streetwalker, even given her past.
I mean he's not a great person but he's not nearly at this bastard's level.

I kind of felt sorry for him. He's clearly a terrible father, but he does care about his daughters. Like when he begged Maomao to save his daughter's life.

つまり、白娘々が物乞いに配ってたあの棒状の菓子は、アヘンの類じゃなくて砂糖と麦角でできたお菓子で、食べた人たちは要するに麦角中毒で死にかけてて、手足の先が壊疽を起こしてるわけだ。麦角の菓子を食べるのをやめて猫猫に世話してもらってから、あの子がずいぶん良くなってうれしい。
猫猫が悪役のふりをして、姉の覚悟を試してたのがいい。姉の目に決意がまだ残ってたのも良かった。そうでなきゃ猫猫はチャンスすらやらなかったはず。父親があそこまでクズなら、家に帰るより妓女として働くほうを選んだって責められない。
怪しい薬の噂はもう宮中に届いてるんだな。白娘々の正体が誰であれ、蝗害に乗じて薬を広めて、今の帝の治世を揺るがそうとしてる気がする。こういう災いは全部、子の一族を滅ぼした天罰だと民に思わせるとか。うーむ……
白鈴が馬閃を誘惑しようとしてたの、かなり笑った！　情の深い高級妓女の困ったところだな。白鈴はやる気満々だ！　それと猫猫に同感で、白鈴にぞっこんの李白がその場にいたら、もっと面白かったはず（笑）
で、本は本来3冊あるはずだって？　左膳は最初にそれを猫猫に言っとくべきだったと思う。さて、猫猫の次の一手は翠苓に会いに行くことみたいだ。本のことだけじゃなく、不老の薬のことも知ってるかもしれないからね。それに阿多妃にもまた会える！　待ちきれない！

So those bars that White Lady was giving away to the beggars weren't opioids but a snack made from sugar and ergot, and the people eating it are basically dying from ergot poisoning/ergotism, which is causing gangrene to form on their extremities. I'm happy to see how much the girl has improved after she stopped eating the ergot snack and Maomao started taking care of her.
I love how Maomao was acting like a villain to test the elder sister's resolve. It's good to see the elder sister still has that determined look in her eyes; otherwise, Maomao wouldn't have even given her a chance. When their father is this s****y, you can't blame the girls for choosing to work as courtesans instead of going back home with him.
So news about the suspicious drugs has already reached the palace. I have a feeling that whoever this White Lady is, she's taking advantage of the locust plague to spread drugs and maybe destabilize the current Emperor's rule. Make the people believe that all of these disasters are divine retribution for eradicating the Shi Clan. Hmmm...
Pairin trying to charm Basen, was pretty funny! I guess this is the downside of being a high-class courtesan with a high libido. Pairin is looking for action! And I agree with Maomao, this would've been more interesting if Lihaku was present considering how crazy he is for Pairin. xD
So there's supposed to be a third book? I feel like Sazen should've told Maomao this information at the start. Welp, it looks like the next step for Maomao is to visit Surei since she could know something not just about the book but also the immortality drug. And we get to see Lady Ah-Duo again! I can't wait!

白娘々の動きは、皇帝の権威をさらに揺るがしそうだ。病をまく幽霊のうわさに迷信が根づけば、民心を操るのに使える。蝗の害のあとの飢えが重なればなおさら。

The White Lady’s actions do seem likely to further destabilise the Emperor’s authority. Superstition might find root in rumours of a ghostly figure spreading disease. Which could be exploited to manipulate public opinion. Especially if the people are also struck by famine following a locust plague.

And we get to see Lady Ah-Duo again! I can't wait!
Considering Ah-Duo like also knows more about how close Jinshi and Maomao are now...this is going to be an interesting reunion.

みんなも言ってるけど、今回の猫猫の冷たさにはちょっと驚いた。ただ、父親はどう見てもクズだった。
でも、姉妹が緑青館で、前よりずっと元気で、身ぎれいな服を着てたのはよかった。生まれた境遇よりいい暮らしができるはず。

Surprised a bit with how cold Maomao was this episode, as others have said. The father was a bastard however, plain and simple.
I am glad though that both sisters looked much healthier, clean and clothes being at the Verdigris House. They’ll have a better life than their lot they were born into.

猫猫は、もともと優しさを表に出さない。困ってる人に手を差し伸べても、損得ずくや冷たく見えがちだ。でも、そういう世界で生きてるんだよね。

Maomao doesn't tend to be outwardly affectionate for the most part, and even trying to express kindness or a solution to someone in need can come off utilitarian or harsh...but it's the kind of world they live in.

あらら、猫猫に、前は禁じられてた果実に手を出す口実ができた。誰かのお墓だ。
幼くして遊女になるほうが、最近殴り始めたばくち好きの父親といるよりずっとまし、ってつらい人生だよね。

Uh oh, Maomao has an excuse to go after the previously forbidden fruit: some dead person's grave.
It's a rough life when becoming prostitutes at a young age is a significantly better prospect than staying with your deadbeat gambling father who has recently started beating you.

この回だけで、姉妹の変わりようがすごかった。猫猫の優しさもだけど、自分の運命を変えようと動く人をちゃんと認める姿勢がよく出てた。それと、すぐ元気になった趙迂に向けた、あきれつつも優しい顔がすごくいい。今までで一番温かい表情かも。

The transformation the sisters underwent just this episode was staggering. And Maomao's generosity aside, it was also a cool showcase of her respect for people who do choose to do something about their fates.
Also really like the face of fond exasperation Maomao gave Chou-u for cheering up pretty much immediately. Easily up there for the warmest she's ever looked.

姉妹がまた出てくるのは確実だと思うけど、父親もこれで見納めじゃない気がする。復讐に来る悪役になるか、死ぬ前の土壇場で猫猫を助けて名誉挽回するかだ。

I think it's pretty obvious the sisters will show up again, but I feel like this is not the last we see of the dad either. Either he'll show up as some villain looking for revenge, or he might help mao mao in some way before dying as some sort of last min redemption

I love how the villa is the same as the rear palace's consort's homes, but in a neutral color.

話に出てる不老の薬は、たぶん中国の歴代王朝が実際に試した不老不死の実験がもとだ。いちばん有名な秦の始皇帝も、失敗した薬で死んだと言われてる。猫猫も、効かせるには人で試すしかないと言ってた。
それなら、誰も気にかけない物乞いほど都合のいい相手はいない……

The immortality drug they talk about is likely based on real life experiments by various Chinese dynasties to try to attain eternal life; the story goes the First Qin Emperor (the best known for this sort of thing) died due to a failed immortaility drug. Maomao even points out that if such a thing is to work one needs to test it on humans.
And what better choice than some beggars no one even tries to notice :(?

I wonder if White Lady is connected to the Shi Clan at all? The timing with the drugs and the plague and the Shi Clan having info pertaining to it feels too coincidental.

前の回で異国の間者の話がちらっと出てたし、どこかの国の大きなたくらみの一部かも。

Considering the previous episode that briefly talked about foreign spies and whatnot, could be part of a larger plot by some foreign nation.

西の間者が反乱をあおってるとみた。子の一族にはもう銃を送ってたし、前には西から来た石綿の衣もあった。
それか、貧しい人の苦しみを、死ぬほど甘いお菓子で終わらせてやろうっていう、ねじ曲がった悲しい試みか。飢饉がひどくなってることを考えると、それもありえる。

My guess is Western spies trying to stir rebellion, they were sending Guns to the Shi already, plus we had the Asbestos cloak from the West earlier.
Either that or some misguided/bleak attempt to end the suffering of the poor with a sweet treat that kills them. That would work well with the worsening famine.

I only knew about ergot's hallucinogenic properties, didn't know it can cause gangrene as well. When they first mention limbs rotting off, I initially thought it was Krokodil-like drug.
Also, cat cat saying she has ergot in her inventory as well. She's definitely gotten high off it before. Purely for academic interest, of course.
