この作品が、当時の女性の扱いの残酷さをさらっと描いてるのは見事だと思う。店主の語る天女の話は、進むにつれてどんどん本人の同意が消えていく。結局は誘拐して無理やり結婚させようとしただけで、村じゅうがそれを知ってて後押ししてた。彼女に衣を織らせれば、もっと稼げるからな。
店主自身も、彼女の扱いに何の問題も感じてないのが分かる。ただの神秘的な女の、詩的な物語としか思ってない

The way this show casually depicts the cruel way women are treated in this time period is well done. The story of the heavenly maiden is told by the shopkeeper in a way that gradually becomes less and less consensual as it goes on and its made clear he basically just kidnapped her and tried to force her to marry him by the end and the whole village knew and supported it as they could exploit her labour to make more garments. You can see the shopkeeper doesn't really see anything wrong with how the lady was treated either. He simply sees it as a poetic story about this mystical lady.

衣を盗まれて飛んで逃げられなくなる、白鳥の乙女の神話のいろんな型も下敷きにしてると思う。多くの話では、女が衣を取り戻して男のもとを去って終わるんだ

It think it's also referencing variations of mythologies about swan maidens who can't fly away/ escape because their feather/ garment was stolen. In many versions, the tales often end with the lady leaving the guy when she retrieves the garment.

Becoming aide/adoptive dad/assistant extraordinaire to a prince means having to sit through his trying and failing to hook up with an Apothecary and all the Apothecary's attempts to steer him off lol.

壬氏がもっと正直ならなあ。「一緒に寝てほしい。いやらしい意味じゃなく、ただ寄り添いたいだけ」ってはっきり言ってたら、猫猫の反応を見たかった。

問題は、月の君として壬氏がはっきり望みを言うと、猫猫が自分の気持ちじゃなく、務めとして応じかねないこと。壬氏はそれを何としても避けたいんだ。

The problem is, if Jinshi directly states what he as the moon prince wants, there's a risk Maomao will simply give it to him out of duty and not because its what she wants to do and he is trying to avoid that as much as possible.

True. Jinshi wants Maomao to reciprocate his feelings. If she were to comply with his wishes out of sheer obligation, I doubt that he’d be all that happy.
Nevertheless, it was cute to see Jinshi get a little embarrassed. If they’d gone and did it, Maomao would’ve been the one taking the lead.

そのうえ、猫猫が感情を表に出さないから、壬氏には彼女の気持ちがなおさら分からないんだよね。

Which makes it even more difficult that Maomao is as emotionally withdrawn/reserved as she is because it makes it hard for him to figure out HER feelings.

うわ、あの話を語るときの絵柄、めちゃくちゃきれいだった。大好き。
ちなみに、石綿の服は実在してて、古代エジプトまでさかのぼる。
ローマ人も石綿が体に悪いと知ってて、石綿の服は「肺の病」の元になるとよく書き残してる。
今のロシアに誰か教えてやってくれ。世界の石綿の半分を作ってて、いまだに屋根や水道管に使ってる。当然、健康被害はひどい。
だから、思ってるほど作り話じゃないんだよ

By the way, clothes made of asbestos were actually a thing and they date back to ancient Egypt.
Romans were also aware that asbestos was actually harmful, often stating that asbestos clothing caused "sickness of the lungs"
Something someone should tell modern day Russia as they produce half the worlds asbestos and still use it for roofing and water pipes. Of course with terrible health consequences.
So not as fictional as one would assume.

猫猫が、生意気な弟を手なずけるしっかり者の姉になってる新しい関係、すごくいい。前の期では、手なずけられるのは本人のほうだった。

Really liking this new dynamic of Mao Mao being a responsible older sister wrangling a bratty little brother, in contrast with previous seasons where she's the one who needs wrangling.

それに、壬氏のことも、猫猫なりのやり方で前より気にかけてる気がする。

Also she seems more emotionally caring towards Jinshi in her own very Maomao way.

猫猫の前だと、壬氏は独占欲の強い甘えん坊の子どもになる。猫猫は裏切れないし手放せない、お気に入りの「おもちゃ」だから

Maomao brings out the possessive and clingy kid in him, because she's his favorite "toy" he can't be disloyal too or do without.

それに白鈴が猫猫に「いいかげん受け入れたら？」って言ってたけど、壬氏の誘いか求婚のことかな？
家族以外のどんな男よりも、猫猫が壬氏を気にかけてるのが、白鈴には見えてるんだと思う

Also, Pairin tells maomao why don't you accept it already? maybe she meant jinshi's advances or proposal?
She can also probably see that Maomao is more caring/attentive towards Jinshi than she would be to any man that's not family.

白鈴も女華も梅梅も、本人が思うより猫猫を分かってる。ほぼ育ての親だし、母親に一番近い白鈴の言葉は重い

Parin,Joka and Meimei know maomao better than she thinks they practically raised her so pairin saying this carries a lot of weight as pairin is actually the closest thing she had to a mother.

で、あの「天女」が怪しい食べ物を出回らせてる張本人って伏線なのか？

天女の件、話としてもなんか怪しいと思ったのは自分だけ？　猫猫がちょっと種明かししたけど、「美化された」版を聞いてる時点で「これ普通に誘拐じゃん、これがロマンチックな話なの？」って思ってた。おい、脈なしだって。家に帰してやれよ

Anyone else think that even as a story, the "Heavenly maiden" situation feels kinda sus? Like Maomao pulled the curtain back a bit, but even when I was listening to the "romanticized" version, I was like "this still sounds like kidnaping, this is supposed to be romantic?" Bro, she's not into you, let her go home.

（笑）なぜだか、今回は壬氏のもどかしさが、なんなら募っていく恨みまで、まるごと伝わってきた。猫猫のずっと無関心なふり、とくに女の子をずらっと並べて「どんな娘がお好みですか？」と聞くのは一線を越えてた。一線がどこにあるのか自分でも分からないけど、あれは越えてたと分かる。
何度も匿ってくれて、高価な薬の材料をくれて、巻き込まれた襲撃から助けてくれて、まあ誘拐じゃないけど誘拐みたいなものから救うために軍まで動かしてくれた相手だぞ……頼むよ。折れろとか、降参しろとか、はいと言えとまでは言わない。でもせめて、向こうにも気持ちがあることを分かって、もう少し優しくしてやってもいいだろ。ただでさえ苦労してるんだから。
分かってる、そういうキャラなのは理解してる。今回はやけに壬氏の痛みが（ほかの感情も）伝わってきて、自分で笑ってるだけ。かわいそうに、本当にかわいそうな人だ

LOL. For whatever reason, I was completely and totally feeling Jinshi's frustration - and even some growing resentment - in this episode. Maomao's constant act of indifference, especially with her trotting out a lineup of women and asking "what kind of girl do you like?" was over the line. I don't even know what the line is, but I know that was over it.
He took you in multiple times, gave you expensive medicinal supplies, saved you from an attack you got mixed up in, rallied an entire army to rescue you from an admittedly somewhat-not-kidnapping-that-was-a-kidnapping ... come on, man. You don't have to acquiesce or "surrender" or even say yes, but you could at least respect that he has feelings and treat him a little more kindly. Poor guy's got it rough enough as it is.
I know, it's the character, I understand that. I'm just laughing at how much I felt Jinshi's pain - and other emotions - this go around. That poor, poor guy.

今回は、猫猫がどれだけ壬氏を意識してるかもよく分かった。傷、体調、体つき、それに…夜の事情、体つき。慰めと愛情が要ることも。体つき。

At the same time this episode also made it clear how conscious Maomao is of Jinshi:
His wound. His health. His physique. His...sexual needs. His physique. His need for comfort and affection. His physique.

Maomao is someone you have to bluntly confront for certain things or the girl will keep feigning ignorance. Either she's legit unaware of his feelings, or she's pretending not to see. Jinshi has to be blunt and confess.

まったく。白鈴は猫猫の母親代わりみたいなものだから、猫猫が鳳仙の子守唄を歌ってるのを聞いて、首を振ってたんだろうな。
特に羅漢と鳳仙の話は、まるごと「二人とも明らかに好き合ってるのに、どっちもそれをまるで伝えられなかった」って話だったんだから

Totally. Considering Pairin is somewhat of a mother figure to Maomao, you know she probably heard Maomao singing Fengxian's lullaby and just shook her head.
Especially since the whole story of Lakan and Fengxian was "you two actually really obviously like each other but neither of you could communicate that worth a damn."

店主が湖に消えた天女の衣だって言ったとき、真っ先に2期の壬氏を思い出した。猫猫も同じところに頭がいってて、すごく嬉しい（笑）
で、あの衣は実は燃えない石綿織りってこと？　かっこいいけど、最終的にあれを手に入れる人はうらやましくないな。店主の話の謎を、猫猫がほぼ解いちゃったのはすごく好き。
やったー！　猫猫と壬氏がまた再会できてうれしい。要するに猫猫は、砦にある虫の本の残りが欲しくて、蝗害の答えが見つかればと思ってるわけだ。
壬氏、頼むからもっとはっきり言ってくれ！　言わなきゃ、猫猫はスルーするに決まってるだろ！
正直、猫猫が娘たちを呼んで壬氏に選ばせて、高順が隅にいるのは爆笑だった。高順はあの場面を面白がってるのか、それとも「一人で寝たくないってのはそういう意味じゃない！」って心の中で猫猫に叫んでるのか。たぶん両方！（笑）
最後には、壬氏も猫猫に子守唄を歌ってもらえたしね。子守唄の場面で悠木碧がわざと音を外して歌ってたのが好き。歌のうまい人が下手なふりをしなきゃいけない場面って、いつも大好きなんだ。
白鈴は全部お見通しだけど、何を言われても、猫猫は壬氏との間のこの空気を認めないだろうな。消えるまで放っておくつもりだと思う

Pairin Stitch When the merchant said that the robe was from a heavenly maiden who disappeared into a lake, my first thought was of Jinshi back in season 2. I'm so glad that's also where Maomao's mind went. xD
So the robe is actually fire-retardant and woven out of asbestos? That's pretty cool, but I don't envy the person who ends up owning that robe. I do love how Maomao basically solved the mystery in the merchant's story.
Yaaay! Glad to see Maomao and Jinshi reuniting again. So basically, Maomao needs the rest of the insect volumes from the stronghold and hopes that she'll find an answer to the locust plague problem.
Jinshi, please just be f*****g direct! If you don't say what you want, you know Maomao is gonna ignore it!
Not gonna lie, it was hilarious to watch Maomao call a bunch of girls and make Jinshi take his pick while Gaoshun is in the corner. Either he thinks this scene is funny, or he's internally screaming at Maomao that that's not what Jinshi meant about not sleeping alone. Or probably both! xD
At least Jinshi got a lullaby from Maomao at the end. I do like how Aoi Yuuki was purposely singing off-key during the lullaby scene. I always love it when talented singers have to pretend they suck at singing.
So Pairin knows what's up, but no matter what she says to Maomao, I doubt Maomao is gonna acknowledge this tension between her and Jinshi. She's probably just gonna ignore it until it goes away.

天女の話を見ると、猫猫がどれだけ話を疑ってかからなきゃいけないかがよく分かる。聞いてる間、異国の娘が間者かもなんて考えもしなかったし、ただの誘拐の被害者だと思ってた。どうやって娘に結婚を承知させたかを語る村人に腹が立ちすぎて（本人の目線からでも無理強いしてたのが見え見えなのに）、衣を通して家族に知らせを送ってたかもなんて思いもしなかった。あの名もない村人のことは今でも心底嫌いだ。最低なやつ。
壬氏は、猫猫の前で盛りのついた犬みたいになってた前の期の最終回からは、すっかり落ち着いたな。あの回に比べたら、今回の猫猫の前ではわりと冷静だった。とはいえ甘ったれた子どもでいるのが好きすぎて、母親相手みたいに子守唄まで歌わせてたけど。
それと、最後に白鈴が猫猫に突っ込んでくれたのもよかった。前の期の最終回のあとで、壬氏が「一人で寝たくない」と言った意味が分からないふりはもうできないよ

The heavenly maiden story really shows how much MaoMao has to question stories because when I was hearing it I never considered the foreign girl to potentially be a spy and just saw her as a kidnapping victim. I was too outraged hearing the villager talk about how he got the girl to agree to marry him when it was so obvious even from his perspective that he was forcing her that I didn’t even consider that she could be sending messages to her family through the clothes. Still have all the hate in the world for that unnamed villager, screw that monster.
Jinshi has clearly calmed down after last season’s finale where he was behaving like a dog in heat around MaoMao since he was relatively calm around her compared to that episode. Although he loves behaving like a spoiled child so much that he mader her sing a lullaby as if she were his morher. Also glad to see Pairin call MaoMao out at the end of the episode. After last season’s finale she can’t pretend to now know what Jinshi wanted when he asked not to sleep alone.

高順が本気で戸惑ってて笑った。猫猫が嬉しそうに迎えるもんだから、壬氏を別人だと思ってるんじゃないかって考えてたんだ。
仕事の合間に見たけど、もう壬氏並みに疲れてる。慰めてくれる猫猫がいないのが残念。
伝説を、ある程度の不思議さは残したまま、現実に根ざしたものに解体していくのが本当に好き。
まったく、猫猫、寝かせてやれよ。疲れた男が寝たいって言っても、そういう意味じゃないんだから。
高順は完全に尻に敷かれてる旦那だな（笑）

今回、猫猫と壬氏がまた一緒にいるのを見られてよかった。猫猫が笑顔で壬氏と高順を出迎えて、二人がその態度にきょとんとしてたのが大笑いだった。それに、壬氏が猫猫に子守唄をねだるのが本当にかわいかった！
趙迂が服を全部いっぺんに着込んでたのは、ペルソナ5の「着ぶくれ杏」の場面を思い出した（笑）
ところで、石綿の服？　体にいいわけがない。でも当時の平均寿命を考えると、石綿が効いてくる前に別のことで死んでたんだろうな

Good to see Maomao and Jinshi together again in this episode. Her welcoming him and Gaoshun with a smile made me laugh so hard because of how puzzled they were by her behavior. Also, Jinshi asking Maomao for a lullaby was so sweet!
Chou-u wearing all those clothes at once reminded me of the "fat Ann" scene from Persona 5, lol.
By the way, clothes made of asbestos? That surely wasn't healthy, though considering the life expectancy back then, something else was probably killing people before the asbestos even could.

I love the misunderstandings between Jinshi and Maomao. He's clearly asking her to keep him company in his bed but even he is skeptical enough to know Maomao isn't getting it and is cautious to find out where she doesn't understand this time.

I guess it's not surprising that rumors about what really happened between the Moon Prince and the Shi Clan would start circulating to the general public...but Jinshi doesn't care about that. But a message from Maomao? Oh you BET he's into that!
Shopping with Maomao! Complete with a dress seller spinning a yarn about a foreign "heavenly maiden" who was found by a village who fell in love at first sight. And nothing says true love like basically holding a woman who just wanted to go home with her family hostage until she marries you and keeps the fine fabrics she makes all to your village. No surprise she would rather burn herself alive than be stuck like that.
But of course Maomao being Maomao can see the truth through the myth and realizes this "heavnely fabric" is a Fire-Rat Cloak fireproof enough to make a killing for the dress shop guy and get Maomao a great deal on all the other clothes...which Shou-u shows off by wearing most of them at the same time.
I can't help but feel like Maomao is destined to still be dealing with the Westerners at some point or another. The envoys are still out there after working with the Shi Clan, the woman who made that cloak was clearly someone pretty important and escaped rather than killed herself. And there was that ominous eye watching her in Maomao's head.
Bet Jinshi wasn't expecting his reunion with Maomao to start off with her best customer service smile, but the real priority is figuring out what to do about the plague and how it will blowback to the Imperial Family if they're not careful. So Maomao NEEDS those books on insects the Shi Clan Apothecary was cooking up.
Aw, Maomao is mindful of Jinshi's well-being (and well-toned physique)! He clearly needs some rest, and where better to sleep than the Verdigris House? Especially when it's the most likely place to find an ideal bedmate, which Jinshi obviously wants in Maomao.
Of course there was no way Maomao was going to give in to him that easily, but my condolences to the masseuse and all the girls who were willing to get busy with the prince who aren't getting any today. They even tried to get his Frog going and everything.
Good on Gaoshun for not cheating on his wife or upsetting his daughter! Dudes' got enough problems as a dad as is.
The least Maomao CAN do for Jinshi is sing him a sweet lullaby, and being voiced by Aoi Yuki, it of course sounds as soothing as you'd expect.
Pairin knows what's up between Jinshi and Maomao whether Maomao is willing to cop to it or not.

I’m still trying to figure out which geographic area Maomao and the others are specifically referring to when they speak of “the West”.
This style of clothing, combined with the Arabic writing on the embroidery, would suggest somewhere in the Middle East. Probably Persia? However, the blond hair and blue eyes almost make me think of Russia. That country is home to some of the world’s largest asbestos mines.
The woman might not have died from the fire, but inhaling those asbestos fibers during the weaving process definitely didn’t do her health any good.

A political entity similar to the Byzantine Empire would indeed have the resources to maintain a network of spies and match this blend of European and Arab cultures fairly well.
The timeline wouldn’t really make sense. The Empire had already long fallen when flintlock guns first made their appearance. But let’s just assume that the author has taken some creative liberties in this regard.

Maomao has got to be deliberately obtuse here. No way she did not understand that Jinshi wanted to sleep with her. Poor Jinshi.
Fireproof asbestos fibers clothes ? Were those really a thing in that time period ? That blonde woman certainly had scientific knowledge and guts to match Maomao, and this is probably not the last time we hear from her.

That said, making everyday clothing, especially as high quality as the one in anime, out of asbestos fiber sounds rather unlikely. The resuting textile is rather rough for everyday wear (even if you don't know it is carcinogenic). I don't think there are any known archeological finds of asbestos wear that are not protective gear or burial gowns.

Much better in this episode. Still has the grasshopper/locust linguistic confusion, but I think that's just how it'll be.
Episode 1's subtitle issues (a skipped line and moving way too quickly in a few spots) were fixed within a day or so. I'd say you're good to watch it now.

そうそう、「バッタ」と書くべきところが「蝗」になってたり、その逆だったりする字幕は紛らわしい。しかも1分のあいだに、蝗の群れを「バッタの大発生」とも「蝗害」とも呼んでる。
日本語でのバッタと蝗の言い分け方のせいで、そういう誤訳が起きやすいらしい。でも、西洋の言語に訳すときに気づいて直すべきところだよ――クランチロールに、まだそういう確認をする人がいればの話だけど……

Yeah, the subs saying "locust" when it should say "grasshopper" and vice versa are confusing. And then the subs refer to locust swarms as both grasshopper outbreaks and locust plagues within the span of a minute.
Apparently the way the Japanese language refers to the concepts of grasshoppers and locusts makes it easy to make those mistranslations, but that's really something that should be caught and corrected when translated into western languages - assuming Crunchyroll even has anyone doing that sort of fact-checking any more...

滑り出しは静かだけど、やっぱり面白い。今回の話の焦点からすると、蝗と前の期の異国の女性たちが、これから大きく絡んできそうだ。

So far a slow start to the season, but still good stuff.
It does seem the locust break and the foreign ladies from last season could be making more of a playing soon with the focus on the story in this episode.

Looks like the blonde gals’ from previous seasons have a big family. Wouldn’t be surprised if the [Shi?] clan’s subterfuge within the kingdom had backers from the west. Always nice to have some political intrigue mixed with a little hopeful romance.
Nothing more calming than a cherished one singing you to sleep, even if they aren’t very good. These two may never become official but their relationship already feels like that of a longtime couple.

I'm glad we got the further explanation from Maomao about the celestial maiden escaping by way of fireproof cloak the surface level of that story was pretty awful.
The amount that Maomao messes with Jinshi is something else.

Got a good chuckle with that scene, like Maomao, isn't it obvious what Jinshi is thinking? Even Pairin already got the hint and just thought Maomao is denser than neutron star at this point.

Afaik asbestos left untouched is basically harmless. It's when you turn it into dust, for example by sawing through it, that it becomes a problem.

Not only by sawing through it, erosion and corrosion for example are a major factor in why it's not a good idea to use asbestos. Not to mention how exposure to temperature difference can and will cause asbestos to become brittle and release particles.
