I still don't understand what the hairpins she received mean. Maomao's interpretation is the only thing that makes sense to me, i.e the person who gave the hairpin will do a favor, or at least listen to the request. Everyone else implies there's something more to it, Jinshi and the other maids obviously think that Maomao has a thing (s*x? promise of marriage?) with Lihaku, but Jinshi and the consorts gave Maomao hairpins as well so that can't be it? What does it actually mean?

猫猫の探偵の腕がどこから来たのか、ついに分かった！おやじさん自身がかなりの名探偵で、推理では猫猫より上なんだな。部屋を調べてるおやじを猫猫がじっと見てるところとか、おやじが猫猫に問題を出して学ばせてるところとか、すごく微笑ましい。
それに、憶測でものを言ってはいけないっていう猫猫の台詞、どうやらおやじ譲りらしい。妓女と商家の息子に何があったのか、猫猫が全部口に出しながら考えてたときに、おやじがたしなめてた。
仕掛け自体はすごく単純で、猫猫がいなかったら商家の息子は確実に死んでたはず。でも振り返ってみると、厄介な客を始末するために、実はみんなグルだった可能性もある。まあ、真相は分からずじまいだろうけど。
さて、猫猫は里帰りできたうえに（一応）謎も解いた！今回はちゃんとおやじに別れの挨拶ができてよかった。それと、妓楼で楽しんだ人もいるみたいだな。李白はこれから常連になるに違いない。
猫猫が戻ってきたときの壬氏の反応は最高に笑えた！今回猫猫が自分を頼ってくれなかったことに、本気で拗ねてるっぽいのもかわいい。
猫猫、言い方ってものがあるだろ！？マジか！あのシーンは全部爆笑だった！猫猫が李白に「夢のような一夜」を過ごさせたとか「頑張った」とか聞いて、壬氏が完全にフリーズするのを見て本気で声出して笑った！玉葉妃の反応も最高！めちゃくちゃ楽しんでる。猫猫が実際に何をしたのか壬氏に教えてあげてほしいけど、たぶん教えないだろうな。最近は壬氏をからかうのが趣味になってるし。xD

We finally get to learn where Maomao got her detective skills! Turns out [her dad is quite the master detective himself](https://i.imgur.com/oMBnywV.jpg) and is even better at Maomao at deduction. It's actually really cute how [attentive Maomao was to her father](https://i.imgur.com/a6P3JRx.jpg) while he was investigating the room and how [her father was also quizzing her](https://i.imgur.com/9amtHxY.png) so she'll learn from him.

Also, Maomao's line about how she shouldn't speak based on conjecture [apparently comes from her father](https://i.imgur.com/rs9uVWv.png) who warns her while she was voicing everything out loud while trying to figure out what happened to the courtesan and the merchant's son.

[The trick was very simple](https://i.imgur.com/DBC6SIE.jpg) and the merchant's son would've definitely been killed if Maomao wasn't there but looking back at everyone and everything, [it's possible that everyone was really in on it](https://i.imgur.com/I4N37ZA.png) so they could get rid of a problematic customer. But I guess we'll never know.

Welp, Maomao got to go home and even (kinda) solved a mystery! Glad to see that [she's able to say goodbye to her father properly this time](https://i.imgur.com/fIMtNBk.jpg) and it looks like [someone had fun at the brothel.](https://i.imgur.com/eHLzHui.jpg) I'm sure Lihaku will be a returning customer from now on.

Maomao's dad seems pretty chill and laidback but it comes off like he's even more quick at figuring things out than she is and is still training her. Makes me wonder what he was like in his prime.

I am here for the courtesan murder mystery drama. I wish the girls had succeeded with how scummy the guy ended up being! But probably best not to dwell on it too much, and only hope that maybe this will finally be what stops him from manipulating girls too much.

Lihaku probably won the most in this episode. Maomao was performing CPR and deducing a murder while he was having fun with a busty Ami Koshimizu courtesan. That's living the life lol.

Jinshi just cannot win. Either Maomao is turning to other dudes for help and not realizing why that would bother him or making it sound like she's banging them in the process. And Gyokuyou is loving the Jinshi suffering lol.

Tbf, I don't think Maomao would have worded it as a kiss it since was life saving moment. But in true Maomao fashion she would probably have worded it even worse.

壬氏のシーン最高だった。声の演技は完璧、台詞は極上、仕草がさらにダメ押し。
2話前の話を受けて、杯の持ち方を見せてたのもポイント高い。

I loved the Jinshi scene. The voice acting was perfect, the dialogue supreme, and the body language just the cherry in the top.

Extra points for showing how he hold the cup in reference to the talk 2 episodes ago.

猫猫の推理力は、かなりの部分がおやじ譲りみたいだ。おやじは仕事をしながら猫猫に気を抜かせず、学ばせている。猫猫は猫猫で、おやじがちゃんと報酬をもらえるように目を光らせてる。親子でいいコンビだ。
それにしても、猫猫が助けた男が実はクズだったのは残念…本気で一緒になるつもりもないのに、妓女たちに気を持たせては利用して騙してばかり…その結果、何度も命を狙われては生き延びてきた。小さな下働きの女の子まで正面から刺そうとしてたけど、あいつがその子の姉に何をしたかを考えたら責められない。
こんな下衆と心中したい人なんている？それに、女に毒を盛られ慣れてる男が、どうして引っかかったのか？答えは、そもそも恋の心中なんかじゃなくて、最初から殺人だったから！この男にきっちり毒を盛って、しかも罪を逃れるために、この女性がどこまでやったかは感心するしかない。この美貌の裏には頭脳があった！それに妓楼全体の後ろ盾も。本当に殺せなかったのがほとんど惜しいくらい。

猫猫が戻ってきて壬氏はご機嫌斜め、でも猫猫はなぜだか分かってない。ただの残念賞みたいな相手とはいえ他の男に助けてもらったうえに、その男と一線を越えたかのような言い方を誇らしげにするんだから。壬氏がその場で死にかけるのも無理はない。そして玉葉妃はそれを一分一秒残らず楽しんでた。

It's really surreal for Maomao to be waking up at home again after so long...though of course she's still getting dragged into things even first thing in the morning. Can't even fully wake up before she has to save people dying from poison.

Maomao with the serious attitude and ponytail! So hot!

Maomao seems to have learned a lot of her deductive ability from her dad, who keeps her on her toes and helps her learn while he works, and Maomao makes sure his dad actually gets paid for his service. They make an effective father-daughter team.

Well, it's too bad the guy Maomao saved was actually a scumbag who keeps using and tricking courtesans he never intends to legitimately be with despite constantly getting their hopes up...and as a result he's survived multiple attempts on his life. Even the little servant girl straight up tries to stab him, and I can't blame her knowing what he did to her sister.

Who would want to commit double suicide with this sleazebag? And how would someone so used to women poisoning him fall for it? Well, because it was never a romantic double suicide, it was murder all along! You actually have to admire how far this woman went to be able to properly poison this guy and get away with it. There were brains behind this beauty! And the backing of the whole brothel. It's almost a shame they weren't able to actually kill the guy

What's up in that annex? is that a person sleeping? Maomao looked really serious.

I guess there's something to be said that no matter where you go beauty can have it's thorns and turn dark when you least expect it...so no better time for Maomao to go back to the palace! Lihaku had plenty enough of Pairin to get hooked, and Maomao will have to work that off too.

Maomao is back and Jinshi is ticked off, and Maomao doesn't get why. Not only did she get help from another man from a mere consolation prize, but she proudly insinuates that she and this dude knocked boots. It's enough to kill Jinshi where he stands. And Gyokuyou enjoyed every minute of it.

へへ、さて後宮に戻るか。壬氏の顔ｗ そして外出の話をしてるときのあの顔ｗｗ 拗ねる壬氏も面白い。ははは、猫猫、言い方！あの勘違い、ほんと好き。楽しいコメディだった。玉葉妃も人生最高の時間を過ごしてる。くそ、もっと見たかった…また一週間待つか。

D'awww look at Maomao being all concerned about her father. Oh noz, what happened at a brothel. It's nice to see how they trust Maomao though cause of her skills. Maomao in detective mode. Can definitely see how she takes after her father in personality. And how he taught her, how nice. And I love Maomao being a good daughter looking after her dad too, making sure he is compensated well. Wonder what that girl's deal is. HEADBUTT! Wow, that guy is a jerk. That servant girl is smart, nice. A pity the courtesan didn't succeed. I worry about repercussions though. What about that annex, Maomao?

Hehe, whelp, back to the inner palace. Jinshi has quite the face there lol. LOL and then that face when talking about her outing. Sulking Jinshi is fun too. HAHA phrasing Maomao. Really love the misunderstanding there. What a fun comedy bit. Gyoukuyou is having the time of her life too. Dang, wanted more... guess a week we wait.

今回のミステリーはすごく良かった。ほとんどの人は最初から事情を知ってたみたいだけど、視聴者として主人公と一緒に謎を探っていくのが楽しかった。それに壬氏の反応と猫猫の言い回しも最高だった。:D

I loved the mystery in the episode. Most people looked like they were already in the know but it was fun as the audience exploring the mystery together with the protagonist. Also Jinshi's reaction and Mao Mao's delivery were top notch. 😀

毒殺の筋書きは何か既存の話が元になってるのかもしれないけど、証拠がすごく分かりやすく提示されてたのが良かった。テンポも最高。探偵ものだと自分が探偵と同じ速さで考えられてないと感じることが多いけど、今回はアドベントカレンダーみたいに手がかりが少しずつ開いていく感じだった。結論も筋が通ってて、猫猫が真相に気づく場面にわざとらしさが全然なかったのは新鮮だった。「毒が効かない／毒を一瞬で見分けられる」って設定は、それがなければ今まで見た中でも最高の明代ものアニメになりそうなところから、ちょっと気持ちを引き戻されるんだけど。
最後のすれ違いも最高だった。『アーサー王宮廷のヤンキー』みたいな、場違いな所に放り込まれた人の話としてすごく自然だった。ちびキャラの絵柄もすごくかわいかった。

I can imagine the poisoning plot might be based on an existing story, but I loved how the evidence was all so clearly presented. The pacing of it was great, too often with detective shows I don’t feel like I’m thinking at the same speed as the detective, but here it was like a nice little advent calendar of clues. The conclusions seemed logical, nothing felt contrived when Maomao came to her realization, which was refreshing as the “immune to poison / can identify poisons instantly” does pull me away a bit from what would otherwise be one of the best Ming period piece anime I’ve seen.

The miscommunication at the end was great too, felt perfectly natural with the Connecticut Yankee - fish out of water type story. The chibi style was very cute there was well.

いつもどおり、猫猫が腕を振るうのを見るのは最高。今回は妓楼の妓女を助けた。吐いたものの中身から毒の原因を突き止めて解毒剤を用意するのは、本当に見事だった。昔の医者がどれだけ工夫してたかには毎回驚かされる。
猫猫と、刺そうとしてた小さい女の子の頭突きのシーンは、作画がすごく良かった。
花街を、美しいけど毒のある花でいっぱいの庭にたとえるのがいいね。思い返すと、猫猫が今みたいな仕事に就くのは完全に納得できる。まさにそのために生まれてきたようなもんだ

As usual great seeing Maomao put her skills to use, this time to save a courtesan at the brothel. Using the vomit’s contents to find the cause of the poison and get an antidote was really neat. Never ceases to amaze me how resourceful ancient physicians were.

That head butt scene between maomao and the would be assassin little girl was so well animated.

I like the comparison of the pleasure district to a garden full of beautiful, but poisonous flowers. In hindsight it makes perfect sense that Maomao would go on to have the type of job she does, literally born for it

I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get anymore indication as to what the dad seemed to have been hiding last week. Definitely seems like he may know more than he let on about maomao’s kidnapping and new role at the palace.. I guess if she’s able to go back and forth easily now we can see that explored later.

Not possible. They are a couple years apart in age at most. His was not stated, I think, but Maomao noted in episode 6 that he looks noticeably younger without his "glitter" (whatever it meant. Cosmetics in general, or him just being ruffled and disheveled in that particular moment?)

Lady Gyokuyou is seriously my ride or die favorite character in the series. She is matronly but will probably take you to an endless mojito bar for brunch just for gossip and a good time.

一人でハルヒを見直してる最中だからかもしれないけど、今回は「推理小説の探偵の周りで事件が起き続けるのは、それがまさに作り話だからだ」っていう台詞を思い出した。
ちびキャラの絵柄に切り替わって、猫猫が効果音を自分の声で言うところは、いつもどおりこの作品で一番好きなところ。猫猫の声って『スライム倒して300年』のアズサと同じ人だよな？あのめちゃくちゃ笑える作品でも、声の効果音をやってたりしたのかな？

Maybe because I'm doing my solo Haruhi rewatch, but this episode certainly reminds me of the line "mysteries kept happening around mystery story detectives precisely because they are fictional stories".

The artstyle shift to chibi and then MaoMao voicing her own sound effects is as usual the highlight of the show for me - MaoMao is Azusa in Killing Slime 300 years too right? I wonder if she also did some of the voiced sound effects in that hilarious show?

1. また簪の話。簪は、くれた相手に会ってもらえるかもしれない引換券みたいなものなのは分かった。李白は武官だけど、ってことは皇帝は、後宮の外でなら使用人が火遊びしても構わないってこと？妊娠したらどうするの？
2. さらに簪の話。「夜のお誘い券を持ってます」って誰に言いに行くんだ？会う段取りは誰がつけるの？
3. 最後の簪の話。たいていは色恋の意味がこもってるなら、壬氏は猫猫への気持ちを隠さず出してるって理解していいの？あの立場なら、猫猫を自分のものにしてしまえるんじゃないか？なんでそんなに回りくどいんだ？
4. 離れらしき場所のシーン、あれは猫猫が一人でふてくされてたの？それとも寝床にいる誰かを見てたの？真面目に聞いてる。なぜかうちのテレビだと暗すぎて見えないんだ。
5. 漫画とラノベ、どっちがいい？ラノベは無職転生しか読んだことないから、ラノベ一択だと思ってた。でも見かけた漫画の絵がかなり好きなんだ。漫画ではどのくらい省かれてる？漫画はラノベからどのくらい遅れてる？1期が終わったら、漫画のどこまで進んでることになる？確かなことは言えないだろうけど、予想だけでもいい。
さっきも言ったけど、みんな親切で、ネタバレに気をつけながら詳しく説明してくれるから、先にお礼を言っておくよ。

I have questions! I feel like I am always too demanding of answers, but it's that the LN/manga readers of this are so nice that I feel comofrtable asking.

I watch this every two weeks, so please forgive since some are from previous episode.

1. More hairpin. I get that the hairpin is a token to maybe have an audience with the person who gave it. Since Lihaku is a military officer, does that mean that the emperor is okay with servants having flings so long as it's outside the rear palace? What if they get pregnant?

2. Even more hairpin. Who does one go to saying "I have a s*x voucher"? Who arranges the meetings?

3. Last hairpin. Since most of the time the implication is sexual/romantic, are we to understand that Jinshi is being upfront about his feelings for Maomao? Given his standing, couldn't he just make her his? Why be so roundabout it?

4. Was that scene, in the supposed annex, Maomao sulking alone or was she watching someone whowas in bed? I'm serious here, my TV is too dark for some reason.

5. Manga or light novel? Because Mushoke Tensei is my only LN experience, I'd assumed LN is the way to go. But I kinda love the art that I have seen. How much stuff does the manga leave out? How far behind is the manga from LN? Once season 1 is over, how much of the manga will have been covered? I know you cannot for sure, but just your prediction would be ok.

As I said above, you guys are nice and explain with a lot of detail while minding spoilers, so I thank you in advance.

まだ1話も見てないんだけど、この作品は完結を待ってからまとめて見る（一気見じゃなくても）のと、毎週見る（途中で燃え尽きないように）のと、どっちがいい？

Haven't watched any episodes yet, is this show better to watch all together (not necessarily binge watch) after waiting to finish or better to watch weekly (to avoid potential burnout)?

話はほぼ1話完結だから、1週間空いても細かいところを忘れる心配はあまりない。何話も続けて見るのはやめたほうがいいかもしれないけど、それ以外は好きなペースでいいよ。

Episodes are mostly standalone, so don't need to worry much about forgetting details with a week break. Probably better not watching a handful of episodes consecutively, but otherwise, whatever pace you want.

あと、一つ訂正させてほしい。題材はけっこう重いことが多いけど、作品自体はほぼ明るい雰囲気だ。だから猫猫がスカートをはいたシャーロック・ホームズそのものだと思わないほうがいい。物語の着想にそこがはっきり入ってるのは分かるけど、ドイルの小説を架空の中国に置き換えただけ、ってわけじゃない。

Also, I do believe I need to make a correction: the show is still mostly light-hearted, despite the subject matter being ugly quite often. So don't expect Maomao to literally be Sherlock Holmes in a skirt. It's a clearly noticeable part of the inspiration for the story, not a reskin of Doyle's novels in fantasy-China.

今回めちゃくちゃ良かった。
のんびり家から始まって、自殺か他殺かの謎解きに行って、「離れ」とかいう場所にほんの一瞬だけ触れたんだけど、映像からしていい思い出のある場所じゃなさそう。すごく気になる。
最後は宮中に戻って、とんでもないコメディの名場面。壬氏がイラついてるのを見た時点で笑い出して、最後はデフォルメのキャラ描写で泣くほど笑った。
猫猫はわざと壬氏に鈍いふりをしてるって思ってる人が多いみたいだけど、俺は本当に自分の言葉が壬氏にどう受け取られるか気づいてなかったんだと思う

I absolutely loved this episode.

Started of comfortably at home, went on to suicide/murder mystery, with a very, very brief reference to some where called 'the annex' which, based on the visuals, is not a place associated with good memories. I am very curious about that.

We end up back at the Palace, with an absolute comedy gold act. Started giggling when I first saw how annoyed J was and was crying with laughter by the end, with the chibi characterisations.

A lot of posters appear to think M was deliberately obtuse with J, but I really think she was oblivious to how her words would be received by J.

毎回あっという間に終わる。全24話なのは分かってるけど、ペースが変な感じがする。
それでも最高の作品だけどね

These episodes are so short. I know it's a 24 episode run, but I feel like the pace is odd.

Similar procedures have been documented in Chinese medical books since as early as ~1800 years ago. Synopsis of the Golden Chamber from East Han dynasty described how to save someone who hang themselves which included chest compression (and stomach compression in certain scenarios).

Mouth to mouth breathing was also documented in another book a few hundred years later in Jin dynasty.

While these documents were not as detailed as a modern CPR tutorial video, they existed before the Tang/Ming mixed setting that this Anime is in.
