yeah? alcohol as a "beverage" and not a way to make water safe to drink is a 19th-20th century invention. there's still no minimum drinking age in lots of places like china.

New China is not the same country as ancient China, and in ancient times there were no drinking laws.
And before the advent of distillation, Chinese alcohol was so low in alcohol concentration that you could drink it as water. It wasn't until we had distillation technology that today's high-count spirits appeared.

Women interfering in politics has always been a more common problem in ancient China, because sometimes the new emperor was very young.Or the emperor had no children. The task of running the country would fall to the imperial dowager.
While the Tang Dynasty empress Wu Zetian could be a brilliant ruler, the Qing Dynasty's empress dowager Cixi ruined the whole country.

>Women interfering in politics has always been a more common problem in ancient China, because sometimes the new emperor was very young

Isn't that what kicked off the whole Three Kingdom's situation. A young emperor, a bunch of infighting between concubines and eunuchs, some pissed off starving peasents and then Dhong Zhuo shows up.

So I don't think it was ever made clear and I'm too scared too look it up but what's the actual pipework situation with Eunuchs anyways? They just snip the balls off? Whole think just gone?

>>23

The whole thing goes.

But if we're on the topic of historic China, all of these girls would have had their feet bound. You're not getting anywhere near the emperor with real feet unless he's a Manchu.
And this anime is definitely not going for the Qing period of palace intrigue.

>>24

Bound feet only reached peak popularity in the late 1800s or so? And even then it was a certain portion of the population, certainly not all. This is one of those exotic things that westerners love to talk about and blow it out of proportions.
It doesn't make sense for a servant to have bound feet since it would impend their ability to do chores and run the household.

Ahh the mystery thickens. So we’re finally starting to get a clearer picture of what’s going on behind the scenes at the palace with these deaths. There’s definitely something sinister.

Jinshi started off the episode down horrendously about Maomao leaving the palace with Gaoshun but quickly snapped back to reality when his childhood mentor turned up dead. Given the guy’s aversion to salt I lean towards foul play, but who and why? The suicide of the servant who worked the party is also suspicious.

I thought we’d get more info on maomao’s dad and why he was acting so sus when she returned home, but seems we’re gonna have to wait a while yet for that.

Aimer on the insert song I think? Maomao requesting to be poisoned if sentenced to death and how the scene turned red with that montage playing as well was a nice touch and good way to end the episode. I think this was probably the weakest episode so far, not bad, but definitely slower and more introspective than the others.

>Maomao noises vs Kumiko noises

Dunno which one is better but I'm enjoying Maomao for now and I'll enjoy Kumiko next year.

Maomao's father's reason for prohibiting her from touching dead bodies was definitely right on the money.

That final scene really shows us how far the distance between these two despite their constant interactions. We enjoy their back and forth and the implication that she's already more than just a "toy" to him but to Maomao's perspective, he belongs to a level far above hers. And it's also probably why she doesn't even entertain the thought that this guy has taken a liking to her.

We know someone poisoned Kounen, but I wouldn’t have guessed it was with salt. Someone knew him very well if they were able to pull that off.

Pretty funny how Maomao can’t touch corpses because her pops knew she’d start harvesting them for ingredients once she did lol.

This servant girl’s death definitely doesn’t feel like a suicide. The will could easily have been forged. Maomao said the body had signs of struggle and there was no way she was scaling the walls with those bound feet.

The musical number in the middle of the series was unexpected, but I really liked the music. It was kind of hauntingly beautiful.

So was Kounen’s murder related to Ah Duo? We might have ourselves an honest to goodness conspiracy brewing.

It seemed to me from limited images of the perpetrator we saw that it was a woman crossdressing, I specifically took notice to the scene with the servant girl to see if she had purple eyes. I couldn't tell what colour were the eyes of Ah Duo's ladies in waiting (or Ah Duo herself, who knows), but the thing I'm on the look out next episode is ladies with purple eyes. Jinshi counts technically, but I'm pretty sure it's established he wasn't the one to do it (though I could be suprsied who knows).

Maomao is bad enough when it comes to poison, let's not turn her on to what she can do with corpses lol.

People losing their lives in sad ways...really makes you wonder how much value a life has when it can be so easily taken, whether through your own choice or something else. And how little you can really do about it. And that sequence with the insert song carried that theme well.

I guess it's time to properly meet Ah-Duo.

It's your classic opening to a case...a rowdy drinker making a spectacle of himself around others, someone slips something into his drink, and then...bam! You've got a mystery.

Jinshi is still in a bit of a funk over Maomao to the point where he can't really play "Jinshi" any more, but at least Gyokuyo finally explained everything. She'd enjoyed his suffering enough as is.

I love how Gyokuyo and Jinshi are properly mourning Kounen with the solemnity of his station and history....while Maomao is like "welp, some complete rando who I've never met just died.

I see Maomao loves her booze as much as she loves her poison.

Kounen had his own story. He lost his entire family and threw himself into work and drink, to the point where he lost his sense of taste, which is why he wasn't able to taste the salt in his drink or notice it until he'd drank too much. And it killed him. And Maomao wasn't looking to put anyone's head on the chopping block, but she gave Jinshi all the clues he needed to figure it out. It was a sad case all around.

And also a personal one for Jinshi, as he knew Kounen since childhood. Maomao is definitely seeing the more human Jinshi as they get to know each other better. Though he still knows how to get her good when it comes to offering up some booze and getting up-close-and-personal. Also threatening to make the legal drinking limit 20? What kind of crazy idea is that!? What are, we modern society?

Dang, the dust barely settles on the first case and now we've got a drowning woman. And the quack doctor is the only one who can investigate it because Maomao can't touch corpses lest she go all Maomao on any body that's gone cold.

Was it a suicide or murder? There definitely seems to be more to this death...but I guess what matters most is a life was lost, and Maomao knows more than anyone how precious yet fleeting life can be, and you don't always have a choice in the matter when you lose your own. And Maomao has been surrounded by death, whether it be in the pleasure quarter or her experience in the palace with so many people dying or nearly dying.

What more can she ask for than that Jinshi let her die via her one true love, poison? Not that Jinshi wants to kill Maomao, far from it, but the choice may not be up to him if she ever gets in trouble. Kind of a somber note to end things between them on.

Oh, we're back to the hidden messages? And it's connected to the head lady-in-waiting for Ah-Duo? Looks like we're focusing on the last member of the top four concubines!

Haha Jinshi still sulking. And some say that Gyoukuyou is still laughing to this day. Of course, gotta go to Maomao for her detective skills. Hey now, girl, don't get excited at drinking. Man, that poor dude... losing his wife and child in an epidemic. And apparently close to Jinshi. Maomao is gonna become an alcoholic lol. I do love Jinshi and Maomao interactions. Especially the art style. Jinshi is really having fun with Maomao though lol.

Doctor having an issue with corpses when it's his job... Also, poor lady. HAHA! the reason why Maomao can't touch the dead is funny. Her dad was worried she'd start grave robbing for medical ingredients. Bleh foot binding. Maomao getting all serious with that topic of death. Huh, nice song, interesting choice to have such flashbacks, but still a nice song. She really hitting him with some truths of their society even if not intending to. Another Concubine to learn about and be involved with coming up it seems.

Also, man, the art and animation of the series is just so good

This episode helped highlight how unfair of a position Maomao is often put in as a person of lower status. There's many ways where she can become someone's enemy as a result of meddling in something, and there's not a whole lot she can do if that enemy is more powerful than her or gets the drop on her. I kind of lost that in her hijinks and the fact that it's her perspective that we're following. It's also a good follow up to her dad gently curbing her curiosity in last week's case, and reminding her that it's usually best for her to leave well enough alone. She's brilliant in a lot of ways, but also quite vulnerable

It's interesting the constant sense Maomao has that any time she can be crushed for being inconsequential. She doesn't dread it, exactly, because her emotions are turned way down (unless it's poison or a mystery), but she is aware of it almost all of the time.

The dramatic CG turning flowers lol.

This episode really shows how numb MaoMao is to the emotional and psychological reprecussions of death, though she doesn't want to die the actual thought of it is extremely matter-of-fact for her. The only thing she's concerned with is in the manner she dies, which I guess is going out doing what you love I guess? It's kind of like stories you hear of health care workers and the psychological effects of having to deal with sick and dying people at an unbearable rate.

I feel like Jinshi has been in a constant state of confusion about her emotional state because of how she completely lost her s**t in episode 4, but doesn't seem to care all that much about her getting abducted and sold into service, and this is just another aspect of her that he can't comprehend.

This is probably my favorite episode so far.

* [Happy Maomao](https://i.imgur.com/zkhx2ev.jpg)

* [Mourning Jinshi](https://i.imgur.com/qOyWqzO.jpg)

[Jinshi's reaction when the misunderstanding was finally cleared](https://i.imgur.com/yHYyDed.png) was hilarious! It must've been so difficult for Gyokuyou to stop laughing and tell him the truth. xD

Man, I feel bad for today's victim. [Kounen was just drinking in peace](https://i.imgur.com/H8Xu0t5.jpg) but he ended up getting killed because the [men who were harassing him](https://i.imgur.com/pTDuqj3.jpg) couldn't get the reaction they were hoping for when they were adding salt to his drink. It's interesting though how [Maomao refuses to name anyone](https://i.imgur.com/JumLQo7.png) since she doesn't want [to be directly responsible for their punishment.](https://i.imgur.com/hnugtd8.jpg)

[I did not expect Maomao to be such a booze hound.](https://i.imgur.com/6gyXS86.png) Her excitement to [getting alcohol is adorable!](https://i.imgur.com/u6MsWC3.jpg) I guess it really shouldn't be a surprise. If she tests poison on herself, she's definitely drank alcohol too. [And that desperation on her face](https://i.imgur.com/y0ogImt.jpg) after Jinshi hinted at a new bill about adding a legal drinking age was just too funny. Looks like Jinshi just learned one of Maomao's weaknesses. xD

[A second dead body in the same episode?](https://i.imgur.com/OKGJctp.jpg) Well, this is a surprise! [Maomao showing professionalism around corpses](https://i.imgur.com/SiBga6Y.jpg) isn't a surprise though. As usual, she's the one who has to do all of the work instead of the quack doctor. It is hilarious how [her father warned her to stay away from corpses](https://i.imgur.com/r8p9qEL.jpg) so her curiosity wouldn't get the best of her.

I thought that this might be related to the earlier case but it seems that they're completely unrelated. And it looks like it's an open and shut case since [they eventually found a will](https://i.imgur.com/Z493K5y.png) that proves it was a suicide. Interestingly, [these past two cases really made Maomao think about her mortality](https://i.imgur.com/H1WXgyd.png) and even requested Jinshi to [poison her if he was ever ordered to execute her.](https://i.imgur.com/dT1OBzf.png)

Also, I think I finally realized why Maomao didn't want to name names earlier. She didn't want to be responsible because [she knew exactly how easily someone's life could be taken away](https://i.imgur.com/ZoYxHED.png) in the palace over the slightest mistake. Naming someone would be equal to condemning them to death.

Oh boy, it looks like Gaoshun finally found [someone with burns in their arms](https://i.imgur.com/HR6XbLb.png) and it's one of Ah-Duo's lady-in-waiting. I'm guessing this has something to do with that guy who thought he was cursed after burning a bunch of wood earlier in the season? Finally! Looks like that mystery is about to be solved.

i think it's less that she doesn't want to be responsible for the death of someone, but more that she doesn't want to be implicated if someone high up figures out she was pointing fingers. that's likely why she talks about her preferred way to be executed. she's a commoner with basically no rights. she can be killed at the drop of a hat for little to no reason.

>Also, I think I finally realized why Maomao didn't want to name names earlier. She didn't want to be responsible because she knew exactly how easily someone's life could be taken away in the palace over the slightest mistake. Naming someone would be equal to condemning them to death.

Ah yeah it's an interesting reminder in showing that this is basically giving her the power to sentence someone to death. Yet she is reminded that she should really not have this kind of power or control at her current commoner status. As she could end up the enemy of someone higher up along with she's just a servant essentially or in addition that could be her next time for a simple basic act she did.

Not sure if anyone else ended up being curious about the possible significance of the plant in the background of the montage, but ended up looking it up since it seemed important!

Maomao is very smart but jumps to the wrong conclusions a lot of the time, specifically regarding Jinshi. Am I right in thinking she believes him a eunuch, but he's not? Is that right, do we know for sure?

TBF all the hints we as viewers have had that Jinshi may not be a Eunuch have been moments where Maomao wasn't here. Everyone in the harem seem to believe him to be a Eunuch as well (except Gaoshun and maybe Gyokuyou) after all, so it's not just Maomao.

She believes him a eunuch yes.

He’s strongly hinted to not be one (the hair pin he wears during the garden party suggests he’s likely royalty), but I don’t think we know for sure yet.

As for why Maomao jumps to conclusions regarding Jinshi — that’s on purpose. The more she knows that she’s not supposed to know as a commoner, the more danger she’s in.

Now that I think of it..theres bits of mysteries from the earlier episodes besides the cases she already solved still hanging every time they focus on Jinshi discussing something serious with the other guy he's always with ..so. Are they cooking something big?..

I was already impressed with the way the show uses color and lighting to add to a scene, but this weeks episode blew me away. They are so many moments that just hit so hard because of the direction and shadows. I started reading one of the mangas (I don't understand all the different ones) last week, but it's really cool to see how much they stay true to it, albeit changing the words sometimes and are able to use the media of anime to build on these scenes in such beautiful and dark ways. Same with sound direction.

what can I say, was hoping we'd see poor Jinshi being told the truth of MaoMao's trip. I giggle at his reactions because he does consider her his territory, not necessarily his possession but getting more to the 'his girl' definition Concubine **Gyokuyou**'s giggling is so infectious, to watch her being entertained by Jinshi and MaoMao's back and forth is gold.

Insert song, while nice, seemed out of place. That moment didn't need vocals put over it. Rather, something more ambient, or complete silence with the images going by would hit so, so much harder.

Part of me doubts whether the servant girl committed suicide. MaoMao did a good job explaining why it would be hard to do so and the will seemed iffy but it seemed like she was involved in the poisoning. I wonder if the way she saw the difference in death treated made her act morbid?

My take away is that someone important murdered the servant for someone she did during the garden party and justice wasn't done because the servant is a commoner, unlike with Kounen. Which is why Maomao contemplates her own possible unforeseen death, because she is in the same position as the dead servant, a commoner.

“Huh, isn’t that technically underage drinking? Well I suppose in not-China that’s fine.”

“Oh good they address it.”

I didn’t quite understand who Maomao was hinting at in the salt poisoning case.

What I hate is when shows pretend modern age restrictions existed in the past. So I was very happy with this.

Kounen who killed him was it because of the salt that the other servants didn't expect would kill Kounen? or was it related to the female worker who committed suicide? was it even a suicide?

First time posting in the Apothecary Diary threads, mainly because something really clicked with me this episode, and is probably my favorite one since episode 4.

Obviously since this series has a focus on poison, chemicals, and detective deductions based on them, it deals a lot with death, but more than previous episodes this one really hammers home how tragic these two deaths really are. Kounen died due to a variety of different circumstances coalescing perfecting into one unfortunate outcome (his inability to taste salt, the frustration of his subordinates, and the personal tragedies that led to his current style of living), and such a death creates this unfortunate undercurrent of sadness through most of the episode, mostly due to Jinshi. The servant's death only reinforces this idea, what with the utter tragedy that comes from the realization she tried so hard to escape before drowning.

Jinshi is also way more off his game than usual this episode, mainly due to the loss of Kounen, and it causes him to be way more unguarded than usual. Obviously the trope of "guy wants girl who isn't into him" is as old as time, but this is probably the episode where I felt the strongest towards JinMao. Congratulations shippers, you got me interested.

All of this leads up the end of this episode, which was just absolutely amazing. The breakdown of what likely happened causes Maomao to really reflect on everything and creates this incredible scene where the flashbacks, somber piano, and bittersweet vocals work to deliver the message "life is fragile, and can end in many different ways for many different reasons", and this is a message that Maomao seems to have experienced time after time and is now fully internalizing it.

Leading into Maomao's request to Jinshi, which the reactions from both really paint a very interesting picture. Maomao is tempered, realistic, and long ago realized that her life means little in the rear palace, but completely misses the concerns that Jinshi is really having towards her. Jinshi, on the other hand, is far more open about his concerns toward such a declaration, but his naivete really begins to show and his emotions seem a bit more unrestrained than the bravado that he usually puts forward. Both are in two completely different position in their life (especially since the series has hinted there is far more to Jinshi's situation than first implied), but only one of them seems to realize this, and neither seem to realize the exact feelings one has towards the other.

Overall a fascinating episode. I have been following this show a bit more casually than the other three I'm watching this season (Hyakkano, Frieren, and Shangri-La Frontier), and my interest in it was waning after a few slow episodes with only minor intrigue, but I consider myself more invested if we get more episodes like this. I'm glad I picked up this series as it definitely isn't something I would have watched if wasn't so good.

Oh damn, that last half took a turn. [Love the colours used there,](https://imgur.com/AlZbfb9) very melancholic vibes

[I've been waiting so long for them to discover the "burns" on Maomao's arms,](https://imgur.com/DA3te5m) no doubt its gonna come up with this case and they falsely blame her. That poison thing was a great initial setup for it too. Maomao is "caught", and Jinshi has to order the execution, what better drama could there be

Episode 5, a eunuch got burns on his hands after burning some wooden writing tablets and some woman's clothing. Jinshi is investigating for people with similar burns, as Maomao speculated that the wooden tablets could have contained certain metals and salts on them, meant to sent secret messages or a code.

「look how I turned out(見ろよこの仕上がり)」は、英語圏でよく聞く「I turned out fine(それでも自分はまともに育った)」をひっくり返した自虐です。

「Imma let you finish, but...(話の腰を折る気はないけど)」は、2009年のMTVビデオ・ミュージック・アワードで、受賞スピーチ中のテイラー・スウィフトの壇上にカニエ・ウェストが上がり、ビヨンセのほうが史上最高のビデオだったと割り込んだ事件の台詞です。

「But they're the same picture.(でもそれ、同じ絵ですよね)」は、米国版のドラマ『The Office』の一場面から生まれたミームです。
