Seems like the child lived for a year, but passed away. I guess that's enough to expel a doctor even if they tried their best to deliver care? Regardless, we finally get an answer as to why Maomao's dad said it was a twist of fate that she was in the rear palace now!

Some have also speculated in this thread that Maomao's dad was expelled as part of a larger conspiracy theory surrounding a potential swap between the ex-emperor's son (and thus, the current emperor's younger brother) and the current emperor &amp; Ah-Duo's late son. That is, maybe the emperor's son has taken the place of his brother.

I can't recall the four infants you're mentioning, and only remember Lihua's son passing. Which are the other infants you're referring to?

Ah-Duo's head lady in waiting is def suspect to me. Also gotta say I partially feel bad for Lishu. She is constantly being judged by her lad in waiting and really doesn't seem to have anyone she can comfortably talk to.

I saw this in another comment, but apparently honey is not recommended for babies because it can cause infant botulism. After 1yo it's supposed to be fine. So considering that Fengming's family produces honey, surely they would know that already.

Not saying this is the best explanation though, there's probably more to it considering that Maomao also mentioned syrup before she had a revelation

I was curious about the "aconite syrup" that Maomao mentioned ; so I ran a quick search and it turns out this is **way** more interesting that I expected:

Mighty convenient that the servant that committed "suicide" confessed to trying to poison Lishu. Especially when Consort Ah-Duo, someone who has been attached to the Emperor before he even was the Emperor and bore him a boy that died, is on her way out of the palace. I definitely smell a mystery.

It's tough to be a concubine, you're prioritized for your beauty and ability to bear children but that can only get you so far, and even with your fellow concubines it can be hard to deal with each other or have an honest relationship. It all ultimately comes down to politics, which Gyokuyou, with her wit and cleverness, uses to get information for her family back home.

Well, Lishu's taste-tester still has the fear of Maomao, which is good, though her other ladies-in-waiting haven't improved at all and still look down on Lishu for trying to avoid stuff she can't eat/drink...but luckily Maomao is there to smooth things over.

I guess this wouldn't be a palace episode of Apothecary Diaries without Jinshi forcing Maomao to investigate something and get involved with a concubine.

Oh hey, Noriko Hidaka as Fengming and Yuko Kaida as Ah-Duo! Some top-tier female seiyuu legends in the cast! Now if we could just have Ah-Duo and Gyokuyou talk we'd have a reunion between Frieren and Flamee!

Ah-Duo is the overtly feminine beauties like Lihua or Gyokuyo, having a more androgynous and handsome look, while still being absolutely gorgeous. Though if you put her in male clothing she looks almost exactly like...and she has the same effect on women that...huh, could she be..?

Fengmin is very dedicated and loyal and runs a tighter and more put together ship than, say, Lihua's entourage, though would that loyalty to Ah-Duo that's kept her by Ah-Duo's side all this time be enough motive for murder? Especially to bump off an unnecessary Concubine like some might see Lishu as?

Dang Jinshi, no need to force honey down a poor girls' mouth! It's to bad Gaoshun is no help and Maomao doesn't think there's anything in his nether regions she can kick! Though who would have expected Jinshi's unwarranted advances would help Maoamao put this case together.

I think maomaos dad got kicked out for not trying to cover up the emperors sons death and not so much for ah duos son dying. That OR maybe the previous emperor killed the baby to protect his position and maomaos dad found out, just a thought.

i think you didn't pick up what the episode was putting down. She can't get new people in her court because she's the youngest so she has the least amount of power/wealth/influence. She's the least favored of the four rear palace concubines because she's the youngest which is why the emperor doesn't visit her (he likes curvy milfs) . Working for a powerful concubine makes you more powerful (look at maomao) so no one wants to work for a weaker concubine like lishu if they have the chance to work under someone more powerful. She's stuck with what she has because she's weak and unliked. Also the stigma with being older than your boss and your boss is a literal child

Ah-Duo has that GAR energy, and unlike Jinshi, in her case I can actually believe that she can sway both men and women alike. Maybe because unlike Jinshi she doesn't have an obnoxious side to her.

If she really is Jinshi's mother as many people in this thread are speculating, then he certainly could learn a thing or two about behaving in a gallant and dashing way. She looked like a knight, while Jinshi usually looks like a clown.

The obvious conclusion would be then, that she didn't raise him. And besides, he can get serious as we've seen occasionally. It's just, since the story is told mostly from Maomao's POV who he visits mostly for mental R&amp;R, i.e. to relax and have fun, + give an occasional errand or a question, he naturally appears like an annoying idiot. Can't blame him, really. Any guy who's been in love can attest that it's a perfectly natural, human way of turning completely f*****g stupid when lovestruck.

次はややこしい家系図。壬氏は阿多妃の息子っぽい。てことは、先帝の赤子と今の帝（当時は皇子）の赤子がすり替えられたってこと。考えられる理由は一つ、先帝の赤子が女の子だったから。その子は死んだことにされて後宮の外に連れ出された。すり替えが行われて、壬氏は先帝の息子、つまり今の帝の弟ということにされ、今の帝と阿多妃の息子は死んだことにされた。
たぶん100%外れてるだろうけど。冒頭で屋根の上に立ってた人は壬氏でも阿多妃でもない。この人物と風明が毒と自殺の件に関わってる。風明は色とりどりの炎で暗号を送ってる。そうすれば、屋根の上に座ってたあの人みたいに後宮の外の人にも見える。もしあれが壬氏か阿多妃なら、直接話せるのに風明がわざわざ暗号を使う理由がない。つまり外部の誰かってことになる。じゃあそれは誰か？
答えは、死んだことにされた先帝の娘。風明と組んでるのはその人。他に先帝につながる人物は里樹妃しかいない。その娘は里樹妃を消して、帝位と生まれながらの権利を取り戻したい。動機はそれしか考えられない。ただ帝位継承の決まりはよく分からない。残る謎は、なんで里樹妃は蜂蜜や風明を怖がってるのか？

This might be a stupid theory. Old man's knee bone wasn't removed for punishment. It would make sense to do something to his hands if baby delivery failed. Old man warned Maomao about using human corpses. He might have used his knee bone to save someone or a baby. Maybe human bone ingredients could be used to treat some disease?

Now onto the confusing family tree. It looks like Jinshi is the son of Ahduo. That means the previous emperor and current emperor's (that time prince) baby were swapped. The only reason could be the previous emperor's baby was a girl. She was saved by fake death and taken outside of the palace. Baby swap was done, Jinshi was declared the son of previous emperor's aka current emperor's brother and current emperor/Ahduo's son was declared dead.

I am sure this would be 100% wrong. But the person standing on the roof in the beginning was neither Jinshi nor Ahduo. This person as well as Fengming are involved in poison and suicide case. Fengming is using multicolor flames to send coded messages. This way it would be visible to the person outside the palace as we saw him/her sitting on the roof. Now if the person was Jinshi or Ahduo, why would Fengming use coded messages when she can communicate in person. This implies that, the person is someone else from the outside.Then who could be this person?

The answer is the previous emperor's daughter, who's death was faked. She is the one conspiring with Fengming. Apart from her there is only one person related to the previous emperor and that is Lishu. The daughter wants to remove Lishu to reclaim the throne and her birthright. That could be the only motive. But I am not sure about the rules regarding throne inheritance. The only thing missing is why Lishu is scared of honey or Fengming?

かなりバラバラで、両立しない説がいろいろ出てるよ。それにこのアニメは謎の手がかりの出し方がかなり露骨だし。そりゃ分かりやすい手がかりすらつなげられない人もいるし、わざわざ考えない人も多いだろうけど、露骨なネタバレって意味じゃ、ここの書き込みは全然ひどくない方だよ。

There are a relatively wide array of very different, mutually exclusive theories. And the show is pretty heavy-handed when it comes to clues for mysteries. Surely, not everyone is able to put even the obvious clues together, and many simply will not bother, but as far as obvious spoilers go, those threads aren't remotely as bad as they could be.

i think its pretty much given that jinshi is ah-duo's son, considering their resemblance and the palace maidens' similar reactions to them. which would mean ah-duo's and current emperor's real son (jinshi) got swapped with the former emperor's child. i'm assuming this child is maomao.

個人的には、殺人事件じゃないのにしっかり作られたミステリーが見られるのが本当に嬉しい。そうそう無いから、推理しながらめちゃくちゃ楽しんでる

Personally I just really enjoy the fact that we are getting a well crafted mystery that's not a murder mystery. It's rare enough, so I'm having a lot of fun trying to piece it together

I got a feeling that the baby boy didn't die but is actually Mao mao. Well that explains the old man's interesting reaction and Mao mao's age.

I don’t even put any thought into trying to solve these mysteries since I just enjoy the reveals as is. That being said, now I am having to wait another week for more Maomao?

猫猫は、後宮の誰かが色の違う火を焚いて外に合図を送れるんじゃないかって考えてるみたい。

Maomao seems to speculate that someone in the Inner palace could send signals to the outside by producing fires of different colours.

暗殺計画を打ち合わせるための連絡手段だよ。犯人は後宮の外から毒を手に入れなきゃならないから、協力者がいて、実行にはそれなりの段取りが要るってこと。

Communication tools to coordinate the assassination plot. The culprit would've needed to procure poison from outside the palace and that means they'd have some accomplices and some neat planning to execute the plan.

似てるのは古代中国っぽい舞台ってとこだけ。話は全然似てなくて、薬屋のほうがずっと地に足がついてて緻密。こんな強い今期でも間違いなく覇権候補だから見てみなよ。

Only similarity is the ancient China setting. The story aren't close to similar at all as Kusuriya is far more grounded and intricate. You should give it a try since it's undoubtedly an AotS contender even in such a strong season like this.

日常パートとドラマパートの混ぜ方がいいよな。でかい真相が控えてるっぽくて、裏で何か煮えてる匂いがする

I like the way this show mixes slice-of-life stuff with drama. There seems to be a big reveal and you can smell it cooking

原作は読んでない。
今回の話で、ここ何話か疑い始めてたことがほぼ確定した気がする。前の話の手がかりだと壬氏は皇帝の弟っぽかったけど、実は長男なんじゃないか。
なぜか壬氏の素性は伏せられてるし、先に進むほど手がかりが増えていくんだろうな。
毒殺未遂の件も、その秘密を守ることと何か関係あるのか？
それに、猫猫のおやじって本当に猫猫の父親なのか？　「後宮にたどり着いてしまった」みたいな台詞があって、しばらく引っかかってた。今回、おやじが後宮の医官で、阿多妃の子どもが亡くなったらしい件に関わってたって明かされて、フラグ立ちまくりだよ。
毎回の謎解きの下に、全体を貫く大きな謎が重ねてあるのが好き。全部つなぎ合わせていくのがすごく楽しい。

So, this episode kinda just cemented something I’ve begun to question for a few episodes, that Jinshi isn’t the Emperor’s little brother, which the clues in the earlier episodes pointed to, but his eldest son.

For some reason, Jinshi’s identity is hidden, guess we will get more clues the further we go?

Is the poisoning connected to keeping that secret in some fashion?

Is MaoMao’s father really her father? That line about finding her way to the Rear Palace has had me wonder at this query for a bit. The reveal in this episode about how he was the Palace’s doctor with the apparent death of Ah-Duo’s child, so many flags.

I like the mystery of the week with an overarching mystery layered underneath, much fun to piece it all together.
