作者いわく、鳳仙がこれほど長く生き延びたのは羅門がサルバルサンに似た薬で治療したからだけど、梅毒がもう進行しすぎてたから治せなかったそうだ。それにサルバルサンはちゃんとした抗生物質じゃなくて化学療法剤だから、かなり毒性が強い。
作者の話だと、科学は19世紀〜20世紀初頭くらい（文化は16〜17世紀）だから近代的な薬もいくつかあるけど、抗生物質が作られるのはもっと後らしい。
サルバルサン以前は水銀を使ってた

Author said that Fengxian survived so long because Luomen treated her with a drug similar to Salvarsan, but since the syphilis was already too advanced it couldn't cure her. Plus salvarsan isn't a proper antibiotic but a chemotherapic, so it was pretty toxic.
Author said that science is 19th century/early 20th,(while culture is 16th/17th) so there are some modern drugs, but antibiotics were developed later on.
Before salvarsan they used mercury.

It's actually kind of insane how connected Maomao is with the palace. Not only is her adopted father the former head doctor, her actual father is a big shot strategist who is a big piece on the chessboard.
She's far from the supposedly low-class nobody she believes herself to be.

羅漢と猫猫の母親は、羅漢がクズだったわけじゃなくて、状況のせいで引き裂かれただけみたいだな。同情しないのは難しいよ

Rather than being a piece of rubbish, it appears that Lakan and Mao Mao's mother were just separated by circumstance. It's difficult not to feel sorry for him.

血筋でいえば名家の血を引いてるかもしれないけど、妓女の子として生まれて、（育ての）親父と同じく体を傷つけられてる。
誘拐された時点で羅漢の一族として認められてたら、今頃、風明の一族はほぼ全員根絶やしにされてただろうな。
とはいえ、羅漢が何話か前に気づいてたら、身分があろうがなかろうと、どのみちそうなってたのは明らかだけど

By blood she may have the blood of a Named clan, but she was born to a prostitute and, like her (adoptive) father mutilated.
If she had been recognized as a member of Lakan's clan by the time she was kidnapped, pretty much everyone in Fengming's clan would have been exterminated by now.
That said, it's pretty clear that if Lakan figured it out some episodes back, that would have happened anyway- status or no status.

That poor f*****g guard at the interrupted ceremony though. Lakan has probably already sent him and his family to death by now.

She's far from the supposedly low-class nobody she believes herself to be.
Mao Mao knows exactly who she is and is so insistent about her status because she does not want to be that person. Lakan being her biological farther and her adoptive father having been trained in the (rear) palace are not surprises to her.

家柄の責任を背負いたがらないところは、壬氏とそっくりだよな

She is very similar to Jinshi in not wanting to take the responsibilities of her lineage.

しかも羅門の「失敗」のせいで羅漢は事実上追い出されて、その結果、鳳仙は落ちぶれて、やがて病気になって、今の半死半生みたいな状態になった。
羅漢だって一番とは言わないまでも同じくらいの被害者なのに、みんな羅漢がわざと彼女を潰したと思ってた。さぞつらかっただろうな

And due to Luomen's "mistake", Lakan was essentially exiled, which resulted in Fengxian's disgrace and eventual sickness and whatever half-dead state she's in right now.
He was just as much of if not the biggest victim of it all, and yet everyone thought Lakan had ruined her on purpose. That must have been very hard on him.

これで、今までの羅漢の行動が全部違って見えてくるんだよな。
「妓女の値打ちを下げるにはどうすればいい？」はからかいじゃなくて、自分の失敗を自分に向けて唱えてたんだ。
壬氏への嫌味も、純粋な悪意や宮廷の駆け引きじゃない。壬氏が娘を奴隷として囲ってると思ってるんだよ。この回まで、猫猫が契約で雇われてることを知らなかったのを思い出してほしい。
もちろん、猫猫が知ってるのは緑青館の人たちから聞いた話だけだしな

It really does recontextualize all of Lakan's actions throughout the show.
"How do you lower the value of a Courtesan?" wasn't a mocking jab; it was an inwardly pointed recitation of his own failure.
The jabs at Jinshi aren't out of pure malice or palace politics; he thinks that Jinshi is keeping his daughter as a slave. Remember that he didn't know that she was employed under contract until this episode.
And of course, Maomao only knows what she would have learned from the people at Verdigris house.

She has syphilis.

半死半生ってのも、当たらずとも遠からずだな。特にあの時代なら。進行した梅毒は組織が壊死して、ハンセン病みたいに体の一部が文字通り取れることが多い。過去の回を見ると、もう潰瘍が出る段階まで行ってるっぽい

Half-dead wouldn't be that far off the truth, especially at that time period. Advanced syphillis caused necrosis that often ends up with body parts literally falling off, similar to Leprosy. Some of the past episodes suggest that she's already experiences the open sore stages.

つまり羅漢がクズだったわけじゃなくて、状況のせいで猫猫の母親と引き離されてただけみたいだな。同情しないのは難しいよ。
それに相貌失認もあるみたいだから、あいつが変なのもある程度は説明がつく。人を人として扱わないのは、猫猫と母親以外はそういうふうに見えてないからなんだな

So instead of being a piece of garbage, looks like circumstance just kept Lakan and MaoMao's mom apart. Kind of hard not to feel bad for him.
Also, looks like he has face blindness so that kind of explains why he's so weird. He doesn't treat people like people because he doesn't really see them that way except for MaoMao and her mom.

Wow -- what an extremely sad story. No villainy involved -- just colossal bad fortune.
Amazing how well compensated his face blindness became -- and how the only two people he can see is his (would-be) wife and his (doesn't-want-to-be) daughter.

The closest to a villain would probably be Lakan's father who basically abandoned him and then sent him away for three years.

羅漢が気づくのにこんなに時間がかかったのはほんとにやりきれないけど、本当の意味で責められる人はいないんだよな

I think the pregnancy paranoia probably set in for Fengxian
6 months is terribly long for a pregnant woman, not to mention 3 years. Sending letter after letter and getting no reply must have been devastating
it f*****g sucks that Lakan took so long to figure it out, but there really isn’t anyone to blame

それで最後には、完全に見捨てられたと思って絶望と苛立ちで追い詰められて、猫猫に当たって、2人の指で呪いのメッセージを送ったんだ

And then when she finally lost it in despair and frustration thinking he totally abandoned her she took it out on Maomao and sent him that cursed message with their fingers.

also, his uncle seems to be Maomao’s adoptive father? discharged from rear palace and is a doctor? seems pretty much like him

猫猫の「おやじ」と羅漢が似てることに全然気づかなかったのが悔しい。でも叔父と甥だと分かった今なら、確かに似てると思う

I feel chagrined that I never discerned the resemblance between MaoMao's "father" and Lakan -- but now that I know they are uncle and nephew I DO notice.

猫猫の大叔父が猫猫を救っただけじゃなく、ある意味では実の父親も救ってて、2人とも彼から多くを学んでたっていう皮肉
