港町に着いたフランたちだったが、七つの月が満ちる月宴祭を前に、どの宿も満室だった。ひとまず初めての浜辺へ向かうと、フランはしょっぱい海水にがっかり。それでも師匠のカレーや釣り、砂遊びで機嫌を直す。夜、路地裏で絡んできた青猫族の二人を人買いと見抜いたフランは、一人を斬り、もう一人を魔法で治しながら問い詰めて拠点を聞き出す。上の階から手下を静かに片付けて地下の子どもたちを救い出し、現れた暗黒騎士サルートとも刃を交える。捕まっていた金髪の双子は、フィリアース王国の王子と王女だった。

It's weird, this show makes it seem like slavery is some kind of bad thing that people wouldn't want to be in, and slavers are horrible people that deserve death. Based on some other fantasy anime, I thought slavery was just a roundabout matchmaking service.

今回、まるごと寄り道クエストだったのが好き。
宿が見つからなくて困ってたら、急に人買いを皆殺しにする話に転がって、最後は町いちばんの宿っていうご褒美で、最初につながった。
I like how the entire episode had a whole side-quest. Started off struggling to find an inn, suddenly the plot took a turn into killing a bunch of slavers, and connected to the start by rewarding the main characters with the best inn in the city.

I was kind of disappointed he turned out to be a good guy. Would have been such a nice flair to have a dark knight work with the slavers. The fight with him was a nice surprise and wonderfully animated again. Wonder what his story behind oath breaking is.
OPの終わりのほうが、今の章のキャラに合わせて少し変わってた。
王子と王女は優しそうに見えるけど、OPでは赤い目と赤黒いオーラで描かれてる。だから少し引っかかってる。
とはいえ、見た目はあてにならない。ジャンだって、いい死霊術師で、仲間で友だちになったしな。
The opening theme sequence changed slightly towards the end to reflect characters of the current arc.
The Prince and Princess appear to be kind, but in the opening theme sequence, they are portrayed with red eyes together with red black aura. Hence, I have some reservations.
Then again, looks can be deceiving. Jean was a good necromancer, who became an ally and friend.

数えてみると、路上で殺したのと尋問したのの2人を入れて、人買いがちょうど22人殺されるところを映してるんだよな。1人も画面の外で済ませてない。
I like that if you count, including the 2 she killed/interrogated on the street, there were exactly 22 slavers shown being killed. They didn't offscreen a single one.

The combo of torture + healing is horrifying as always, but a spell to restore the mental health of the person in question before that is just... next level.

最初にフランが青猫族を殺しに行った時は、止めようとしたんだよ。で、結局自分が止めることじゃないって悟った。代わりに、殺すなら必ず自分を使えって言い張ってた
I like how Shishou doesn't try to preach that what Fran is doing is wrong or something like that. After all he recognizes that Fran suffered before they met.
He tried that the first time Fran went to kill a blue cat and ultimately realized it wasn’t his place to stop her. He just insisted that she always use him to kill
戦闘の動きがマジでレベル高い。アクション作画を誰がやってるのか知らんけど、こいつは分かってる。ごちそうさまです。
シーズン1も良かったけど、シーズン2はガチで別次元。流血も遠慮しないし、どのアングルも全力。
今期いちばん好きな作品かもしれない。

Season 1 was good stuff, but season 2 is really next level. They're not shy about the bloody stuff either, and they're going all out on every angle. This might be my favorite show this season.

The wind spell for silence was not only super effective when she was killing the slavers... it also added a nice creepy factor to the scenes.

we have X at home は、英語圏のネットで定番の言い回しです。子どもがお店の料理をねだると、親が家にあるでしょと返し、出てくるのは似ても似つかない手作りの代用品、という流れのミームで、本物と比べてしょぼい物を笑うときに使います。ここでは『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』の白い城塞都市ミナス・ティリスを本物に、フランが砂で作った街を家にあるほうに見立てています。

folded over 1000 times は、日本刀を持ち上げすぎる海外のオタクを茶化す古いネタです。誇り高き日本の鋼は千回折り返して鍛えてあるから西洋の剣など敵ではない、という大げさな語りがもとになっています。MUH は my をわざと鈍く書いたもので、思い込みの強い人の口ぶりをまねる 4chan の書き方です。ここでは日本を師匠に入れ替えて、刀の姿になった師匠に当てています。

原文の最後の desu は、語尾の丁寧語のつもりではありません。4chan には、tbh（to be honest＝正直に言うと）と打つと自動で desu に置き換わる仕掛けがあり、文末に desu があれば、書き手はたいてい「正直」と書いたつもりです。もとはアニメ好きをからかう悪ふざけでしたが、今では誰も気にせず使っています。

You bet your sweet bippy は、1960年代末のアメリカのお笑い番組『Laugh-In』で流行った決まり文句で、もちろんだとも、という意味です。bippy 自体には意味が無く、響きを楽しむための言葉でした。今回の英語字幕は、ふかふかのベッドにつられたフランの返事をこの古めかしい言い回しで訳していて、書き込みは音声と字幕を並べて、その落差を面白がっています。

I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me は、アメコミ『ウォッチメン』で、刑務所に入れられたロールシャッハが囚人たちに言い放つ有名な台詞です。追い詰められたはずの側が、実は狩る側だったとひっくり返す決め台詞として、英語圏のネットでは閉じ込めた相手のほうが危ない場面によく貼られます。音を消し、壁で囲んで逃げ場をなくした今回のフランにぴったりというわけです。

'e's 'armless now は、イギリスの下町なまり（コックニー）の、単語の頭の h を落とす癖を使ったダジャレです。he's harmless（もう無害だ）の h を落とすと、he's armless（もう腕が無い）と同じ音になります。英語圏では、手足を斬り落とす場面が出るたびに誰かが書き込む定番の言葉遊びです。

英語の古いなぞなぞ、My dog has no nose. How does he smell? のもじりです。smell には、においを嗅ぐ、とにおう、の両方の意味があり、鼻が無いのにどうやって嗅ぐの、という問いに、ひどいにおいがする、と答えるのが落ちです。原文はわざと答えを書かずに止めていて、英語圏の読者なら続きが頭に浮かぶ形になっています。においを気にしたフランの場面に掛けています。

ジョン・ブラウンは、19世紀半ばのアメリカで奴隷制の廃止を訴え、武器を取って戦った人物です。1859年にハーパーズ・フェリーの武器庫を襲って処刑されましたが、南北戦争へつながる出来事として今も語り継がれています。英語圏のネットでは、奴隷商人を容赦なく倒すキャラクターをジョン・ブラウンになぞらえてたたえるのがお決まりで、人買いを狩るフランはまさにそれ、というわけです。

『スター・ウォーズ エピソード2』で、アナキン・スカイウォーカーが、砂は粗くてざらざらしてどこにでも入り込むから嫌いだとこぼす台詞は、英語圏で長くネタにされてきた迷台詞です。しかも彼はのちに暗黒面に落ち、ジェダイの子どもたちを手にかけます。水が苦手で砂遊びを楽しみ、子どもを助けたフランは、その正反対だという冗談です。

Murder Hobo は、『ダンジョンズ＆ドラゴンズ』などテーブルトークRPGの遊び仲間から生まれた言葉です。家も定職も持たずに旅を続け（hobo）、出会った敵を片っ端から倒して金品を手に入れる（murder）冒険者を、自嘲を込めてこう呼びます。冒険者という職業を身もふたもなく言い直した言葉で、ここでは悪人だけを狩るフランに、正義の、と付けています。
総評
ただ、その驚きは引いてしまったというより、喜んでいる人のほうがずっと多かったのが印象的です。Reddit では「ほかのファンタジーアニメを見てたから、奴隷制ってちょっと回りくどい婚活サービスだと思ってたんだけど」と、奴隷を当たり前のように扱う作品を皮肉る書き込みに賛同が集まり、フランを奴隷制と戦った歴史上の人物になぞらえる声も続きました。異世界ものに奴隷が出てくると、主人公が買い手の側に回る話も少なくありません。だからこそ、迷わず人買いの側を斬るフランの姿が、海外の視聴者には新鮮に映ったのだと思います。
それでいて、ただの残酷な回にならなかったのは、戦い方の組み立てがよく考えられていたからでしょう。「でもそれだと下の階の人買いに気づかれて、捕まってる子が危なくなる」という指摘のとおり、フランは上の階から静かに手下を減らし、ウルシの闇魔法で目を奪い、最後に地下へ降りる。「復讐劇の前に、まず人質救出の作戦なんだよな」という読み方には、なるほどとうなずかされました。刀の姿になった師匠への反応も大きく、「こうなると、場面に合わせていろんな剣の形に変わる師匠が見たくなるな」という期待の声も出ています。忍び込むゲームにたとえる書き込みがいくつも出てきたのも、それだけ潜入の手順がゲームの攻略のように見えて楽しかったということなのでしょう。
師匠の立ち位置に目を向けた書き込みも心に残りました。「師匠が、フランのやってることは間違ってるとか説教しようとしないのがいい」という声のように、師匠はフランの過去を知っているからこそ、止めずにそばで見守る。その一方で、フランが少しでも危ない目にあえば過保護な親の顔になる。このちぐはぐさがこの作品の味だと受け取っている人が多いようです。
締めくくりは、フィリアース王国の王子と王女でした。助けた双子が実は王族で、宿探しに困っていた一行が最後に貸し切りの宿にたどり着く流れには、「今回、まるごと寄り道クエストだったのが好き」という声も。ただし、OPで赤い目に描かれていることや、王女がふと見せた笑みを気にする人もいて、「せめて中立くらいであってほしい」と身構える書き込みも見られます。ラストには新たな影も現れ、浜辺ののんびりした空気はもう戻ってこないかもしれません。かわいいフランと怖いフラン、次はどちらの顔が見られるのか、楽しみに待ちたいと思います。
