most maps of the era looked like this. Really, this map is one of the more rare ones because it's to-scale. Most maps were just unscaled drawings of landmarks where people "remember seeing them". No distances, scaling, or really any detailing made to things that aren't landmarks. And it was like that until the early 18th-19th century.

Actually, upon rewatch, I'm not sure how coherent this story seems if you haven't already read the Manga or the LN. Lots of it seems to get brushed over that is important contextual information like who the neighboring territory is or the Marquis. I'm sure it'll come up later, but why bring it up now?

This is cute. The fact that Fia tells Rufus about her future being banished and that half of the episode is from Rufus' POV reminds me a little bit of "An Jishou Akuyaku", except Fia doesn't want to be treated like a villainess.

If the first half was from Rufus' point of view, it would be his fiancee suddenly wanting to break up with him because he cheated on her in a dream.
Her saying she got a divine prophecy and then coming up with all these revolutionary ideas reminds me of Hildegard of Bingen who said everything she came up with came from God to avoid being called a witch.

すごくいい第1話だった！細かいところだけど、片方が作業してる間にもう片方がそばで過ごしてるのが好き。ピアが化石集めしてる間はルーファスが見守ってて、ルーファスが仕事してる間はピアが隣で刺繍してる。別々のことをしてても一緒にいるのが好きなんだよな

Really nice first episode! Minor thing, but I liked how they both spent time hanging out while the other was working. Rufus spends time watching over Pia while she is gathering fossils, and Pia spends time embroidering with him while he does his own work. They like being together even if they aren't working on the same thing.

To be fair, I think she has acted reasonably consistently like a middle-school girl. The maid even noted that she acts like a regular ten-year-old outside of her past life depression. I think this reincarnation fits in the "original character + memories of past life" subcategory, so being awkward is a little more natural.

それって元祖ぼやきおじさんの宮崎駿が文句言ってたやつだな。アニメしか知らない人間が、昔のアニメのアイデアをいじくり回してるだけのアニメが多すぎるって。

That's something king of the grouches Hayao Miyazaki's complained about. Too many anime getting made by people who only know anime, who are just playing with ideas from previous anime.
As an example I suppose, there's nothing wrong with a tsundere character inherently, but there was a while there where characters were just written as like, "And she's the tsundere of the cast." That's not an actual personality!

So far it's reading more to me that it isn't shyness or awkwardness, so much as aloofness because she knows there'll be an endpoint between her and Rufus once the OG heroine enters the picture. More the "can't believe he actually loves her because he's fated to love someone else more passionately" trope.

ルーファスが彼女の恐れに気づいてること、そして2人の絆をほぼ壊れないものにしようと手を打ってること（それに彼がそばにいてくれて大事にしてくれることをピアが喜んでること）が、ゲームの中にあった関係を遥かに超えたものを生むのかどうか、見ものだな

It will be interesting to see if Rufus's awareness of her fear -- and his steps to ensure they have a near unbreakble bond (and her happiness as to his closeness and his respect for her) creates a relationship that is FAR outside the bonds of what existed in the game.

My running theory right now is it'll end similarly to Observation Log. He'll be under the magic roofie cookie's spell, and his love for her will break him out of it. And it's only after he becomes roofied that she realizes loves him or let's herself love him.

あんなことになったのを考えると、前世の恋愛はそんなに親密でもまともでもなかったんだろうな。たぶん彼女は恥ずかしがりで関係を進めることなんて言い出せなかったし、あのクズ男もそんなのどうでもよかった。彼女が自分の代わりに研究さえやってくれればいいんだから、どっちからも関係が変わることはなかった。普通の意味での恋愛関係なんて、そもそも無かったと言えるかもな

I imagine her relationship wasn't very intimate or legit considering what happened. What likely happened was she was too shy to bring up escalating the relationship in any form and since that scumbag didn't care about it. As long as she did the work for him, then there would be no change to it from either parties. You could arguably then say she wasn't in a relationship in any shape or form that people would normally say exists

Even if it was like Observational Log, I'm still here for it as I enjoyed that one so much! Not everything has to be a new idea or concept and once I got over that, I started to enjoy these tropes a lot more.

While watching it I was thinking of Observation Log as well, in a very positive way. That show was such a wonderful surprise from Spring, more anime in that general vein would be welcome. And both leads are adorable. Rufus falling for her so hard put a massive smile on my face.

I don't think I've ever seen an Anime about Paleontology so with the typical Otome Game love story this should be a good one.

This is an odd combination of incredibly generic and strangely specific. I'm not really sure whether to treat Pia as a 10-year-old who has memories of her past life or a reincarnated woman who's curently a 10-year-old. And is there an ancient ruins setting that makes her archeology skills important?
I'll give this the 3-episode rule, but so far there haven't been any standout strong points.

The way I look at it is that Pia has the love and affection her original self had for Rufus and her family but now she also has the past memories/archaeology interest of her former life.

今のところ見つけたのは植物の化石だな。ゲームの舞台は学園だし、この化石ってやつを広めるには論文を書いて学者たちを説得しないといけない。巨大な生き物の化石があればかなり助けになるだろうな。ああいうのは子どもにも一般人にもウケるから

So far she found plant fossils. The game takes place at an academy. It'll take research papers and convincing the scholars to get this fossil thing to take off. The fossil of a huge creature would really help too, since those are a draw for children and the public in general.

I love Pia and Rufus. Rufus may rub people the wrong way because he is so assertive, but he’s also very protective, and he appreciates her love for him. Of course, I am sure terrible things will happen when they get to the academy.

ルーファスの評価が高いのは、(1) ピアのことをよくわかってて観察眼が鋭いところ（早くから決められただけの結婚相手じゃない）と、(2) ピアの（一見ばかげた）恐れを完全に真剣に受け止めて、乗り越えられるようにできることを全部やってるところ

He gets lots of points for (1) knowing her well and being very observant (not just an early-arranged marriage partner) and (2) for taking her fears (seemingly irrational) absolutely seriously and doing everything he can to help her get past them.

ピアとルーファスってある意味お互いを補い合ってる気がする。

I feel like Pia and Rufus complete each other in a way.
Pia is genuinely devoted and in love with Rufus for Rufus, which in a romance partner means a lot to someone in Rufus' position because most ladies would want his title more than him.
And in Rufus Pia has someone who can take care of and help her get the things she wants most (love, loyalty, dogs, and fossils).

Even in a most utilitarian angle, having a loving wife who’s also a scientist is the most helpful.

何も期待してなかったけど、これは（暫定で）即継続決定。設定にはちょっと間抜けなところもあるけど、主人公とヒロインがすごく好きだし、もう2人のやり取りもいい。それに「空気感」がよさそうだし、令嬢の古生物学者が主人公ってのがとにかく俺に刺さる。少なくともこの序盤の段階では、嫌いになれる要素が何も無い

I had no expectations here, but this is (provisionally) an insta-keep. Some goofy bits to the premise, but I really like our hero and heroine a lot -- and the way they already interact. Plus the "tone" seems promising -- and having a noble lady paleologist as protagonist just plain appeals to me. At least, at this early stage, there is nothing NOT to like.

空気感の話、わかるよ。言葉にするのは難しいんだけど、キャラ同士のやり取りの空気感って、アニメが良くなるか駄目になるかを決めることがすごく多いんだよな。ふわふわしすぎて何も響かなくて魂が無い感じのときもあるし、ドラマチックすぎて痛々しいときもある。これはちょうどいい感じで、ほどよい深みもある

I get what you mean with the tone. It's not necessarily something I can put into words, but feeling the tone of the character interactions is quite often what makes or breaks an anime for me. Sometimes it feels too floaty, like nothing has any impact and the whole thing feels soulless. And sometimes it's too dramatic and painful. This one feels just right, with a nice level of depth to it

In set up this kinda reminds me of An Observation Log of my Fiancee who calls herself a Villainess.
Yep, I also thought about that when I watched the episode. I do think Pia is a lot more likable though, and I feel like we are to grow into appreciating the couple a lot more than Observation Log of my Fiancee.
This is definitely a keep so far for the season. It's still a unique take on the genre.

Wonder if the author wanted to make a Ruri Rocks like show about fossils, but was told by the publisher to make an otome game isekai instead, however they found a way to fit their original idea in it.

Look at this little 10 year old Casanova lol. It’s adorable how helpless he is in front of Pia’s charms. Girl had a really s****y past life but at least she’s got a good future ahead of her in this new world.
So far, this one’s looking pretty decent. I like the paleontology angle. That’s unique.

悪役令嬢って、転生先のゲームをプレイしてたこと以外に人生で何かあったって描かれることがあんまり無い気がするから、ピアにちゃんと古生物学の経歴があって、それがゲームの世界での行動に活きてるのはいいと思う

It feels kind of rare for the Villainess to have anything going on in their life outside playing the video game they get reincarnated into so I appreciate that Pia actually has a paleontology background and how that applies to her behavior in the game world.

ピアの笑顔は何としても守られるべき！前世であんな目に遭ったうえに、乙女ゲームの名前すら無いモブ悪役令嬢に転生したんだから余計にな。
全体として、すごくいい第1話だった！ルーファスがピアのかわいさにすぐ気づいたのがよかった。心温まる恋愛を期待してる。

Pia's smile should be protected at all costs! Especially after everything she experienced in her previous life, and reincarnating as a minor villainess from an otome game who wasn't even named.
Overall, a really nice first episode! It was good to see that Rufus quickly found out how lovely Pia is. I hope for a heartwarming romance here.
By the way, the Prince and all those influential people falling in love with the Main Heroine after eating her baked rainbow cookies? Yeah, those cookies surely are some kind of brainwashing.

即継続決定。ピアは今のところ俺の唯一の嫁、『恋する小惑星』の真中あおにすごく似てる。内向的な女性科学者で、ステレオタイプに書かれすぎてない（日本のポップカルチャーではそこが問題になりがち）。
ただ正直に言うと、ピアは女の子らしすぎてあおには敵わない（俺はあおの学者っぽさの方が好み）。でも興味を持ち続けるには十分だ

Insta-keep. Pia comes off a lot like my only waifu so far, that is, Manaka Ao of Koisuru Asteroid: Introverted female scientists who aren't written too stereotypically (which is a problem in Japanese pop culture).
I need to admit, though, that Pia is too feminine to actually compete with Ao (I prefer Ao’s scholarly flavour), but that's sufficient to keep me interested.

Someone else showing some love for Asteroid in Love, such an underated show. I was reminded of it as well as that anime focuses a lot on Earth Sciences in general, including geology, cartography and land surveys, which are things Pia is also doing

主人公が古生物学者っていうのはすごく面白い選択で、アニメでは見たことない独特なスキルを持たせてる。今期これは間違いなく俺のヒット作になると思う

Her being a paleontologist is a very interesting choice and gives her a unique skill set I haven't seen in an anime before. I think this one is for sure going to be a hit for me this season.

So, she wanted to exit the otome games story before her abandonment event triggers ... but her fiance doesn't let her do that and instead gives her a favorable bet that would set her up for life in any case. But then he actually falls in love with her ...
Nice setup.

みんな結構『観察記録』と比べてるな。ありがたいことに俺はあの作品をすごく高く評価してるし、これはパクりじゃなくて雰囲気が似てるだけ。クランチロールの視聴リストに入れたときは「ちょっと気になる」程度のかなり様子見だったけど、次の2話でよほどやらかさない限り、最後まで見ると思う

I see a lot of us made the Observation Log comparison. Thankfully it is a show I held in high regard and this isn't a knock off, just similar vibes. This was a very tentative "i'm curious" when I added it to my watch list on crunchy, but unless the next two episodes really f**k things up I expect to watch this through.

you have to be seriously intelligent and keen to want to kidnap someone who knows how to dig dirt and measure distances a little bit differently from everyone else.
if it were me, i'd be like 'who wants to kidnap someone who plays in the dirt?' i'd try to kidnap a young kid who has a talent for combat or sorcery something instead.
