A big part of it is she's in way over her head. She's too weak personally and in terms of power base (there are some family issues) to inspire loyalty or play the game of palace politics. So people f**k with her as is convenient for their various palace schemes, out of jealousy for her "undeserved" position, or simply self-interest to divert luxury intended for the Consort to themselves.

As far as I can tell it's the Emperor's choice as long as the woman has produced a male heir. There can also be political considerations based on the importance and role of the consort's family. Gyokuyou also has an advantage in that the Emperor would prefer to introduce foreign blood into the royal line to strengthen it.

She literally saved her child's life without seeking any personal gain when the "official" medical professional was useless. Not to mention she's literate and they made clear that alone should have gotten her moved to a higher position simply as a matter of getting the best use out of her. Maomao has plenty of main character syndrome you could complain about later on, but this is not an example.

It actually follows closely the "famous" manga adaptation tbh, if you comparing them scene by scene. One thing the anime does better is adding some original scenes that doesn't even exist in both LN and manga version.

At a certain point the maids did not just look "huddled up" -- it looked like they were protectively huddled around MaoMao to keep her warm (unless she generates abnormally high body heat -- and *they* were using *her* to warm up).

The proxy “battles” between rival ladies in waiting was fun to see. The breakdown of the concubine situation was quite interesting as well. Bit icky, but interesting.

Only Maomao would look so happy eating potentially poisoned food. Girl made tasting that poison look *very* sensual lol. She made puking look enjoyable too. How does someone puke their guts out and is all smiles immediately after? What a goober!

So did the Lishu’s food taster poison Lishu out of revenge or was it a political thing? I really don’t get why Maomao would just let her off like that. Lishu has a deadly mackerel allergy. Food allergies ain’t no joke.

Lishu's food taster is just ignorant about how allergies work, she wasn't trying to kill Lishu just bully her, so MaoMao scared her straight by explaining to her she was basically poisoning her.

On the other hand, someone DID try to actually poison Lishu but the poison was swapped by the food taster.

The show is called the Apothecary "Diaries", but we hardly see Maomao write anything down. Very sus. At least this episode she wrote down instructions for Lishu's food taster.

原題を訳すと「薬屋の独り言」。猫猫には独り言の癖がある。一人のときでも、周りに聞いてる人がいても構わずに、考えを口に出しちゃう癖。そもそも話が始まったのもそのせいで、壬氏が猫猫を見つけられたのは、何か書くものを探してるって独り言を聞いたからなんだ。
それから、YouTubeで毎週『猫猫のひとりごと』っていうミニアニメも出てる。今の最新話では壬氏が独り言を言ってて、猫猫に癖がうつったって指摘されてた

The original title translates as "the Apothecary's soliloque". Maomao has a habit of soliloquising, IE, of speaking one's thoughts aloud when by oneself or regardless of any hearers. And her speaking like that is what kickstarted the whole story, as Jinshi was only able to find her because he overheard her soliloque she was speaking about finding something to write on.

There's also a mini anime series being released on youtubve each week called Maomao no Hitorigoto, Maomao's soliloque. Current last episode actually had Jinshi soliloquizing and Maomao pointing out that he caught her habit.

I took “Diaries” to be more of a metaphorical chronicling of Maomao’s adventure than actual diary being present.

小説1巻の17〜19章（53%）、漫画だと7〜8話（2巻の終わりまで）にあたる。
漫画では猫猫が汁物を味わうのに6ページ使ってる。猫猫が梨花妃の侍女たちに石を渡すのは漫画だけのおまけ。小説から削られた・変えられたところ：
・鈴麗公主が外に出ている場面。小説の猫猫は「外に出していいのか」と気にしつつ、「まあ可愛いからいいか」で済ませてる。皇族を危険にさらしていい理由が「可愛いから」
・壬氏と出くわす場面。小説では、まだ毒が残ってて頬がいつもほど強張らず、壬氏に笑いかけたように見えてしまうのを猫猫が不満に思ってる。猫猫にとって毒入り料理の一番の問題は、健康じゃなくて壬氏に笑顔を見せてしまうこと
・吐く場面。小説では、にやにやしながら吐く猫猫を壬氏が信じられないって顔で見てて、猫猫は「吐いてる若い娘をじろじろ見るなんて失礼だ」と思ってる

園遊会の侍女はつらいよな。ずっと待機で、寒い中立ちっぱなし……猫猫ができる限り温めてあげてたけど。まあ帝と妃たちはいい見世物を楽しめたわけだ。
梨花妃の侍女たち、まだ偉そうに猫猫の陰口叩いてるの？あれだけのことをしてもらったのに？とはいえ、化粧をしてない猫猫に気づきもしないところとか、そのあと猫猫がその一人に、壁ドンで震え上がらせて「体に何かしてやる」と脅したことを思い出させるところは、かなりスカッとした。あと桜花はほんとにいいやつ！
ほかの侍女たちが猫猫の優しさや生い立ちを深読みしすぎて、ほとんどミーア（ティアムーン）級になってるのが最高。
皇太后、めちゃくちゃ色っぽい！帝を産んだときにすごく若かったのもあるんだろうな。若すぎて、里樹妃が9歳で先帝の妃になって、今は今の帝の妃になってることへの伏線みたいになってた。阿多妃のこともあって、余計に話がややこしい。
うわ、梨花妃の侍女たち、猫猫が怖すぎて、わざわざ温めてあげようとしても何も受け取らないじゃん！
李白はいいやつっぽい。毒で恍惚としてる猫猫にあんなにドキッとさせられるとは思ってなかっただろうけど、壬氏の耳に入らないよう祈っとけ。
猫猫は人気者だな！壬氏、玉葉妃、李白……梨花妃まで！当分後宮からは出られそうにない。
毒見役としての猫猫の唯一の楽しみは毒に当たるかもしれないことで、ついに見つけたときは天にも昇る心地。毒に当たったときの猫猫くらいウキウキできるものを、みんなも見つけてくれ。
「これは毒です」来た！最高の決め場面！これぞ猫猫、マイクドロップだ！
猫猫には、しょっちゅう自分に毒を盛らないように見張ってくれる壬氏が必要なのかもな。ただ悲しいのは、猫猫が初めて壬氏に本気で笑いかけたのが、毒が嬉しくてもっと食べたかったからってこと。
壬氏の謎は続く。宦官のくせに園遊会でずいぶん正装してたし、髪には立派なかんざし（男のファンでもいるのか……？）、高順はほかの武官と一緒の扱いだった……そして猫猫は、女たちの前で気取ったり飾ったりしていない「素」の壬氏をちらっと見る。しかもそっちのほうが好きっていう！
じゃあ全部、里樹妃にアレルギーのあるサバを食べさせる企みだったの？それが手違いで玉葉妃側に回っただけ？もっと深い陰謀があるのか？猫猫が毒見役を震え上がらせたからもう起きないだろうけど、これで終わりなのかな？

It's rough being ladies-in-waiting at a Garden Party, always on standby and standing in the cold...even with Maomao offering what warmth she can for them. At least the emperor and the concubines get quite the show.

Lihua's concubines are STILL being snobs and talking trash about Maomao behind her back? Even after all she did for them? Although them not even recognizing her without makeup and her subsqeuent reminding that one girl that she put the fear of God into her and promised to do things to her body while kabedoning her, was quite satisfying. Also Yinghua is a real homie!

You gotta love how much the other ladies-in-waiting read into Maomao's compassion and background to the point where she's reaching Mia-levels.

The Empress Dowager is a total MILF! And I guess that's partially because she was really young when she had the Emperor. So young that it was practically foreshadowing how Lishu, at age nine, was a concubine to the former Emperor and is now the current Emperor's concubine which just makes thing even weirder with Ah-Duo.

Dang, the Lihua girls are so afraid of Maomao they won't even accept anything from her when she goes out of her way to try and help them warm up!

Lihaku seems like a nice guy. I don't think he expected to get so turned on by Maomao's poison arousal, but he better hope Jinshi doesn't catch wind of it.

Maomao is a popular girl! Jinshi, Gyokuyou, Lihaku...even Lihua! She's not getting out of the place any time soon.

The only joy Maomao gets as a taste tester is the possibility of getting poisoned, and when she finally finds some she's on cloud 9. Find something that makes you as giddy as getting poisoned makes Maomao.

"This is poison." There it is! The money shot! THE Maomao moment and mic drop!

Maybe Maomao needs Jinshi to keep her on-track and not constantly poisoning herself all the time. Although the sad thing is the first time Maomao really smiles at him it's because she's happy over the poison and wants to eat more.

The mystery of Jinshi continues. For a eunuch he sure got dressed formally for the Garden Party, had a fancy pin in his hair (unless he has male admirers...), Gaoshun got grouped with other military officers...and Maomao catches a glimpse of what seems like the "real" Jinshi when he's not putting on airs or acting fancy for the ladies. And she actually prefers him like this!

So this was all a plot to poison Lishu with mackerel she's allergic too? It just ended up with Gyokuyou's side by mistake? Is there a deeper plot in play? Maomao was able to put the Fear of God into the taster so that it doesn't happen again, but is this the end of it?

犯人は2人いる
里樹妃の毒見役は、里樹妃をただの好き嫌いだと思い込んでて、わざと別の人（玉葉妃）の魚入りの料理とすり替えた。これが犯人1。一方、里樹妃のクラゲ入りの汁物は猫猫と玉葉妃のほうに出された。で、その汁物に毒が入ってたから、誰かが里樹妃を殺そうとしてたってことになる。この正体不明の毒殺犯が犯人2で、本気で殺そうとしてたのは間違いなくこっち

There are 2 criminals

The Lishu food taster believed Lishu was a picky eater and so intentionally swapped in someone (gyokuyou) else’s food that had fish in it. So the food taster is criminal 1. While Lishu’s soup with jellyfish got served to Maomao and Gyokuyou. Turns out some one is trying to kill Lishu as that soup had poison in it. This unknown poisoner is criminal 2 and definitely the one intentionally trying to kill.

で、犯人2はたぶん、壬氏が火傷の跡がどうとかで探してる相手なんだろうな

And I assume criminal 2 is potentially the one Jinshi has been searching about regarding the burn mark or something.

サバはただのアレルギー反応で、毒が入ってたのは汁物。里樹妃向けだったけど、毒見役が都合よく玉葉妃の料理と入れ替えた。なんでそうしたかは今後の話で明かされる

The mackerel was just an allergic reaction, while the soup was the poisoned item, it was meant for Lishu but her poison tester conveniently swapped her dishes with Gyokuyou's, the reason for why she did that will be reveal in future episodes

陰口を叩いてたあの侍女を猫猫が脅すところはかなり楽しかった。猫猫がずっとその場にいたのに気づいてもいなかったのが笑える。
ついに皇太后が登場したけど、いやすごい！めちゃくちゃ若く見える！帝を何歳で産んだのか気になってきた。年齢の話でいうと、里樹妃は実は先帝の妃だったんだな。皇太后があれだけ若いなら辻褄は合う。
猫猫がまたかんざしをもらった！あの若い武官からだけじゃなく、梨花妃からも。ここ2か月の猫猫の働きを考えれば意外じゃない。侍女たちの驚きっぷりが最高。これは梨花妃が猫猫を引き抜こうとしてるのかな？
猫猫とほかの毒見役の差がおかしすぎる！うちの子はウキウキで待ってるのに、隣の子は恐怖で正気を失いかけてる。猫猫は毒を食べるのが好きすぎて、本当に毒が入ってたときは美味しさで昇天してたと思う！
毒を食べて上機嫌になったせいか、猫猫が笑顔で壬氏に挨拶するのはこれが初めてじゃないかな！それにしても、猫猫が毒だって宣言したのに、汁物を飲もうとしたバカがいたのは笑った。
で、毒見役は本当に里樹妃に毒を盛ろうとしたの？それともアレルギーのある料理を食べさせたことだけが罪？汁物の毒はまったく別の事件？あの場面を2回見たけど、毒見役の動機が分かった気がしない。でも猫猫があの女を怖がらせるところはかっこよかった

After Maomao is poisined while tasting food in the Garden Party and she goes to vomit, Jinshi encounters her and while he's dragging her by her hand, she notices he has a new hairpin, does anobody know who gave him that hairpin and its meaning?

Ok, after watching that episode and seven ep, I realised Jinshi wasn't given any hairpins, he already have, don't know if he got it from someone or if it was purchased, the thing is Gaoshun told him only special people can wear it, 'special' as in 'emperor's brother'? Or because of high rank? And Gaoshun also said Jinshi wasn't taking good care of it, even MaoMao notices the hairpin wasn't assemble in the right way in episode 6, after she vomited the poisoned soup. If that hairpin it's \*that\* important, why is Jinshi so careless about it? I noticed the hairpin has an animal symbol on it, does this mean something?
So, what's with this hairpin?!

またしてもコメント欄が宮廷のしきたりを知らなすぎて笑える。当時はそういうものだったんだよ。気分を害したか？言っとくけど、こんなの氷山の一角だぞ。アニメはところどころかなりマイルドにしてる。たとえば里樹妃に毒の粉をつけ続けてた侍女なんて、本来ならその場で処刑されてる。数日部屋に閉じ込められるだけじゃ済まない。若い妃のことは面白いと思ってる。帝が怒らせたくない名家の出なのは間違いない（軍とつながってるのかも）。じゃなきゃ、なんで二代続けて帝の妃になるんだ？
このアニメほんと好き。後宮や、そこにいる人たち、そしてもちろん変わり者の猫猫をもっと見たい

Again these comments are hilariously ignorant of imperial customs. That’s how it was back then. Offended you are? Trust me this is only the tip of the iceberg. The anime is very light hearted on some aspects. Example: the maid who kept applying the poison powder to Lady Lishu would have been executed then and there, not simply confined to her room for a few days. The young Concubine i find amusing. She’s definitely from a noble household the Emperor doesn’t want to piss off (maybe linked to the military). Why else would she be wife to two monarchs in a row?

I really love this anime. Interested to see more of the Palace, its subjects and course our lil freaky Maomao.

猫猫が暴力抜きで威圧してくるのがたまらない。知識と存在感だけで十分

I love how non-violently intimidating Maomao is. Just knowledge and pure presence is enough.

最高だった。きれいな作画、たくさんのキャラとその絡み、ちびキャラの反応、猫猫のマイクドロップ、主人公二人の性格の対比、イカれた毒フェチ、謎解き、それに残った謎まで全部入ってた。どうやってこれを20分に詰め込んだんだ。細かいところが多すぎて、見直す価値がある回だ。
猫猫の正義感は、害のない人を守るために秘密を黙っておく癖とつながってる。妃たちの系譜は分かりにくかったけど、2回目の説明ではっきりした。あの毒見役は前回の怪しい人影と一致するけど、実際に毒を盛った容疑者ではない。だから犯人は男かもしれないし女かもしれない。しかも屋外の園遊会なのに、火傷した手を隠し通してる。今の時点ではまだ見当がつかない

That was epeak. It had everything from crisp animation, to many characters and their interactions, shinchin chibi reactions, Maomao's mic drop moment, mirroring of two mc's personality, unhinged poison fetish, mystery deduction, and more unresolved mysteries. How did they manage to squeeze all this in just 20 mins. So many details, this episode deserves re-watch.

Maomao's sense of justice matches her habit of keeping secrets to protect harmless people.The concubine tree was confusing but the second explanation makes it clear. That food tester matches with the shadowy figure from the previous episode and she is not a suspect for actual poisoning. So the culprit could be male or female. And they managed to hide their burnt hands even in an open garden ceremony. Still difficult to guess at the moment.

猫猫が唇を舐める場面もよかったけど、50メートル（たぶん）離れたところからあれが見えてた男たちもすごい。鷹の目だよ。
俺は、毒の標的は玉葉妃だったと思う。里樹妃のほうは、毒見役が嫌がらせでわざとアレルギーのある魚を食べさせただけ。でも死ぬこともあるとは知らなかった。毒見役から見れば、じんましんが出るだけで、もっとひどい反応は見たことがなかったんだろう。
だから猫猫は、そのいたずらについて脅すだけで済ませたんだ

As good as maomao's lip licking scene, for the guys that is 50meters (I think) away to be able to see it, is a feat on itself. These guys have eagle's eyes.

For me, the target for the poison was lady Gyokuyou. As for lady lishu, the food taster just deliberately let her eat the fish that she is allergic to Just to spite her. However, she did not know that it can cause death. For the food taster's perspective, it only causes hives and hadn't seen what a worse allergic reaction is.

This is why maomao only scared her about their prank.
