Not named I think, but it makes sense he makes an appearance already. Just one of those cases where an unnamed characters gets a name later and we don't realise it is them earlier on due to no images.

（たぶん）経験の無い猫猫が、妃たちに妓楼版カーマ・スートラを教えてるってのは気になるけど…本で読んだだけじゃなく、「姐さんたち」からいろいろ聞かされてきたのかもな。
この作品ほんとに楽しい。前のクールからそのまま2クール目が続いてくれてよかった。

Bah, there's no way that was a full 23 minutes... the episode just flew by, even if it wasn't very dramatic this time plotwise. They keep showing that monocled officer (who kinda has a spymaster vibe about him), and from the preview looks like he will be more prominent in the next episode.

I have to wonder about Maomao (a presumed virgin) teaching the concubines some brothel version kama sutra... but perhaps she's also heard a lot of the stuff from her "older sisters", not just from reading books.

I really enjoy this series, glad we got the second cour continuation straight from last season.

猫猫と最初の二人の妃の関係がほんとに好き。猫猫は自分の力で二人の好意と信頼を勝ち取ったし、猫猫のほうも二人を好きなのが伝わってくる。みんなが笑顔なのを見ると幸せになる。

I really adore the relationship between Maomao and the first two concubines. She earned their adoration and respect and I can tell Maomao likes them both too. Seeing them all smiles makes me happy.

ねこねこが厄介者っぷりを発揮してるのは楽しいけど、壬氏のことはまだ明らかに見くびってるな。壬氏が「よさそうだな」と言った後で水蓮が墨の色の違いを指摘したのは、猫猫に向けたものじゃなくて、猫猫を甘やかしすぎだと壬氏をそれとなくたしなめてたんだよ。あのやり手の壬氏が土壇場の書き換えに気づいてないわけがない。現に書き換えてるところを見てたんだし。

As fun as Catcat being a menace is, she clearly still underestimates Jinshi. Suiren pointing out the difference in ink colour after Jinshi had already said "seems about right" wasn't aimed at Maomao, it was her subtly reproving Jinshi for indulging Maomao too much. Being the smooth operator he is there's no way he hadn't already clocked the last-minute alteration, especially since he caught her doing it.

高順は宦官かもしれないけど、あの場面ではめちゃくちゃ肝が据わってたな。上司兼友人が惚れてる娘と、本人の目の前で親しげにしてるんだから。高順が引くまで、壬氏は殺しそうな顔してたぞ。

Gaoshun may be a eunuch but he had some massive cojones in that scene, being friendly and close to the girl his boss/friend is crushing on right in front of his face. Jinshi looked ready to kill him before he backtracked.

妃たちが「研修」にそれぞれ全然違う反応してたのがよかった笑

The new concubine is so beautiful. This story is full of pretty girls but she has a breathtaking, otherworldly beauty to her. A youthful and mature, or mischievous and wise aura about her. If she's anything like she looks like, that's some masterful character design.

あの登場シーンは、今まで見たキャラ紹介の中でもトップクラス。あんなに美しく空気を決めてくるとは。

Her entrance has to be one of the best character introductions I've ever seen. Absolutely sets the tone in such a gorgeous way.

新しい淑妃・楼蘭妃が後宮に現れた。登場シーンが素晴らしかった。色は抑えめで、台詞は無く、音楽はとても重々しい。唯一の差し色は、彼女の装飾品と化粧の赤。今回は一言も喋らず、猫猫の講義中ですらすごく無関心な態度だったから、どういう女性なのか気になる。
玉葉妃と梨花妃が壬氏に手紙を送ったおかげで、猫猫は妃たちの先生を頼まれることに。壬氏は何を教えるのか知らされてなかったけど、知りたくてしょうがなかった xD
猫猫が教えてたのは、もちろん皇帝の夜のお相手を満足させる方法。みんなの反応がプライスレス。玉葉妃は講義中明らかに楽しんでたし、梨花妃はすごく真剣に勉強してたし、里樹妃は何が起きてるのか明らかに理解できてなかったし、楼蘭妃は講義なんてどうでもいいって態度だった。
倉庫の爆発の原因が小麦粉の粉塵だったのは面白い。猫猫は李白に実演までしてみせて、李白はそれが起こりうることを身をもって体験した。猫猫がそれを知ってたのは、自分自身が緑青館の一室を同じやり方でぶっ壊したことがあるからってのが笑える xD

Just caught up to this anime and all I can say is, wow. It's great. I almost skipped out on it because I am usually not interested in anime set in Chinese settings. To those of you who are similar: I recommend that you don't. This is a 10/10 imo.

Maomao as a sexual education teacher wasn't something I expected, but can only imagine how hilarious it would be if we got an episode purely on this. Lishu is def too young for it though lmao. Meanwhile Loulan was extremely disinterested curious on how that.

I always enjoy Maomao solving the mystery. I really enjoy her curiosity.

In the opening scene, the new consort was walking pass several gates there weren't connected by walls. Does anyone more familiar with traditional architecture know what's the deal with those?

まず思い浮かぶのは日本の鳥居かな。この設定では皇帝は神聖な存在ってことになってるから、あの門は皇帝のためだけの儀式用の演出なんだと思う。漫画でもそうだったかは覚えてないから、ただの推測だけど。

The first that comes to mind are japanese torii. As the emperor is supposed to be a godly being in this setting, those gates are probably ceremonial staging only for him to use. I don't remember if they do so in manga so I just speculate.

俺がここに来るのは、漫画と比べてアニメがどう仕上がったか見るためなんだけど、どっちも控えめに言って素晴らしい。こういう話がずっと好きなんだよな。物語の中でしか知りようのない、ありえたかもしれない過去を描いてくれるから。だからこの題材は過小評価されてると言いたい。歴史ってのは間違いなく冷たい道のりだった…人類がより良くなろうともがいてきた姿は本当に見ものだよ。かろうじて生き延びる人もいれば、当時は見当もつかなかった原因や、どうしても治せなかった病気で早死にする人もいた。
厳しい現実と、生き延びることや、手が届かないと思われていた成功という形で人生がくれる恵みが合わさると、胸を打つ、心温まる物語になる。
うまく描かれれば、間違いなくほろ苦い味わいになる！

I personally come here just to see how the anime turned out compared to the Manga, they're both excellent to say the least. I've always appreciated stories like this, because it portrays a possible past that we know nothing about other then in stories. Precisely why I have to say this concept is probably underrated, history was definitely a cold road.. Humanity's struggle to become better was definitely something to behold, with some barely getting by to others dying early in life from things we had no clue about, or disease we just couldn't cure.

The harsh realities of life, coupled with the blessings life may give you in the form of survival, or success when it wasn't thought to be attainable make for touching stories, heart warming even.

If the story is done right, it's a bitter-sweet feel to be sure!

It isn't the actual China and our world. It is just set in a world that is based on roughly 1600-1700s China. There is some bigger changes once we actually get into the world building a bit more.

Actually I think it came up in a previous thread that it's both based on tang (700-1100) and a later dynasty, at the same time. Certain politics, intrigues and empire strength were bigger at one time, but you get more leeway with stuff from another time too.

この作品の「恋愛」要素は嫌いじゃないけど、少なくとも今のところは一番興味が薄い部分かな。猫猫が後宮のシャーロック・ホームズに戻ってくれてうれしい。

While I don't hate the "romance" aspect of the show, I think it's the least interesting part for me, for now at least. I'm glad she's back to being the Sherlock Holmes of the palace.

Based off the time when Gyokuyou had to clear up Jinshi's misunderstanding when Maomao said she, "gave lihaku a night of blissful dreams", it seems that, at the very least, she is aware Maomao has a connection to the Verdigris house.

猫猫が今度は「姐さんたち」直伝の技を妃たちに教えてる。梨花妃はすごく興味津々、玉葉妃は心底面白がってて、かわいそうな里樹妃は深いトラウマを負い、楼蘭妃は…最初から最後まで真顔を通してた。あれは大変だったはず。原作小説を読んでるから楼蘭妃の本当の性格は知ってるけど、猫猫との最初の「やりとり」をどう思ってたのかはずっと気になってた。
猫猫が爆発に詳しくて、実際に緑青館を吹っ飛ばしたことがあるってのは驚かない。あの小悪魔なら普通だわ。小麦粉が爆発物になりうるってのは、前にテリー・プラチェットの『Monstrous Regiment』を読んで知ってた。そのせいで昔は製粉所で火やランプが禁止されてたんだよな。

Maomao is teaching her « big sisters » tricks to the concubines now. Lihua seemed very interested, Gyokuyou seemed to have found it really funny, poor Lishu is now deeply traumatised, and Loulan… kept a straight face through the whole thing, which must have been hard. I read the light novels, so I know what Loulan’s personality is actually like, but I always wondered what she thought of her first « interaction » with Maomao.

I am not surprised that Maomao would know all about explosions, and that she once actually blew up the Verdigris House, it seems normal for such a gremlin. Flour potentially being an explosive is something I had already learned before when reading Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett. They used to ban fire and lamps from flour mills for that reason.
