The recap with an insert song is just filler that's completely extraneous. Could've spent more time on Maomao mom had it been cut. It was bad here and it was bad in episode 9. The only time an insert song was used well was at the end of episode 3 and that's because it wasn't a recap.

Actually, no. I've seen clips of this show and thought "Maomao's cute" and "the dub's neat!" butt I severely underestimated how much this anime sucked me in. Maomao isn't merely a cute girl; turns out, she's a woman centuries ahead of her time.

例の風明の件は、思わぬところまで波紋を広げたな。壬氏は猫猫を引き止めると思ってたのに、クビにしたうえに一人でいじけて拗ねてるとは。なんてポンコツ。まあ、猫猫が花街の仕事に戻ってから口説けたからいいか。買い取るって言ったのは冗談かと思ってたけど、本気だったんだな笑 冬虫夏草だけでも十分すぎる価値なのに、借金を返せるだけの金まで持ってきてるし笑 猫猫が戻ってきたぞ！

This Fengming situation sure created a lot of unintended blowback. I really thought Jinshi would insist Maomao stay, not axe her and get all emo and sulky about it. What a goober. At least he got to flirt with her when she went back to working in the pleasure district. I thought he was kidding when he said he was gonna buy her, but I guess not lol. As if the caterpillar fungus wasn’t valuable enough, he brought enough gold to pay off her debt lol. Looks like Maomao’s back!

I thought it was a really important development for Jinshi, that he prioritized Maomao's wishes over his own (although he gets it completely wrong)

それに、猫猫がただの駒以上の存在だって、ほぼ認めたようなもんだしな。
でもまあ、大事な相手のためを思ってやったことが、実は相手の望みと真逆だった――ってやつが無いと、ラブコメのすれ違いは完成しないからな。

And basically admitting that she's more to him than just a pawn.

But of course what romcom misunderstanding would be complete without trying to do what's right by the person you care about even when it's exactly the opposite of what they actually wanted?

壬氏は、男主人公がヒロインの幸せのために身を引くタイプの恋愛ものだと思い込んでたけど、結局しくじって、金と薬草で埋め合わせる羽目になった。まあ最後は丸く収まったからいいか笑

Jinshi thinking this is the romance where the male lead gives up on the female lead for her own happiness only to screw up and have to make up for it with cash and herbs. Well, at least everything worked out in the end lol.

2クール目でOPは新しくなるのかな。今のOPすごく好きなんだよな。こういう制度の九族皆殺しみたいなのは本当に大嫌い。罪人と血がつながってるってだけで罰するのは最低だよ。しかも取引があっただけの人まで解雇って？ほんとクソな「正義」だな……。そのことで猫猫が心配してるのは笑えた。あのばあさんがそんなことするとは思えないけど。
おっと、猫猫がちゃんと自分から壬氏を探しに行ったのは初めてじゃないか。それに、彼女がこの生活を気に入り始めてるのを見られて良かった。壬氏は猫猫の望みが分かってなくてほんとアホ。玉葉妃の言うとおり、後悔するぞ。そうだぞ高順、あの子はただのおもちゃじゃない。
おお、着飾った猫猫を見ろよ。いちばん人気の妓女3人と一緒に貴人の宴へ。お姉さんたちの猫猫への接し方が大好き。ちゃんと大事にしてるのがいいよね。猫猫が盗みを考えてるのは笑った。あのお姉さんの「おいしそう」で大爆笑。でも仕事を楽しんでるのはいいと思う。素敵な宴だ。おや、この宴に誰がいるか見てみろよ。壬氏は本当に猫猫の貞操を心配してるんだな。素直に話し合えてて良かった。すごくいい場面。お姉さんたちも猫猫に感心してる！
離れにいるあの女性のことはいつ分かるんだろうな。へへ。やり手婆も好きだな。なんだかんだ猫猫を大事にしてるのが伝わる。いい歌だな、気に入った。それにしても、このシーズンは本当にいろんなことがあった。ちょこちょこ入る可愛い絵も大好き。ハハ、壬氏！あの2人にすごいもの持ってきたな。どうやら壬氏の下で後宮に戻って働くみたいだ。この作品ほんと好き。

Wonder if this series' is getting a new OP in Cour 2. I really like this OP. I really loathe the nine familial punishment s**t of this kinda system. Punishing people just for being related to someone guilty is garbage tier. And even letting go anyone who had business ties with them? Again, really s****y "justice" system.. Haha Maomao's worry on the matter is amusing. I doubt that old lady would do that to you.

Hey now, first time she's really sought out Jinshi. And nice to see her coming to like this life though. Jinshi so silly not understanding what she wants. Gyokuyou's right, gonna regret it. Yea, Gaoshun, she's not just a toy.

Oh my, look at Maomao all dolled up. Going to a noble's with the three most highly saught after courtesans. I do love how they treat her. How they care about her and such, it's nice. Haha Maomao considering theft. LOL That lady and her "yum." Do at least like that she enjoys her work. What a nice party. Oh hey, look who is at this party. Jinshi really does worry about her chastity. How nice, communicating honestly. Really nice moment. The big sis courtesans are impressed with Maomao!

Wonder when we'll finally learn about that one lady in the annex. Heh. Also do like the old lady. Can tell she does care for Maomao. What a nice song. I like it. Also wew, a lot really did happen in the season. I also love these lil cute art moments. HAHA JINSHI! Quite the things to bring those two. Looks like she's back in the inner palace working for him. Love this series so.

However, in the context of past times, when familial ties and clans were more stronger and more meaningful, it does unfortunately make sense to be careful. There have been cases in history when forgiving family members of an enemy resulted in the forgiver getting murdered

またしても猫猫が着飾って、壬氏が本人だと気づかないほど騙されてるのが笑える……それにしても肌を猫猫の指でなぞってもらえるとは、壬氏は役得だな。で、二人はついにすれ違いに気づいて、猫猫は後宮にいて全然構わなかったと分かり、壬氏に買い戻す理由ができる。おまけに、彼女の唇を指でなぞって、その指についた口紅に自分の唇を重ねることで、キスみたいなものまでちゃっかり奪っていく……で、この一部始終を三姫と高順が見てたって話はしたっけ？
雪だ！クリスマスの時期にぴったりだし、猫猫がここまでの出来事を挿入歌つきで振り返るのにもぴったり！クールの締めにちょうどいい振り返りにもなってた。
壬氏は学んでる。猫猫自身は金で買って、彼女の好意は薬草で買う。猫猫もやり手婆も、欲しいものをもらえると我を忘れるほど大喜び。

What are the chances that the people who kidnapped Maomao would be associated with Fengming? And as they clean house of her influence, that means expunging Maomao...though Jinshi could very well keep her if she wants, given his influence, but is that the right thing to do? Use his power to keep her there and close to him? Is that want she would want? Does Jinshi want to create even more distance between them? She's far more to him now than a convenient pawn.

Of course, ironically, Maomao does NOT want to be fired and lose her job, not only because she's getting into the groove with the job and finding stuff she enjoys about it but because she's nowhere near sent enough hot men to keep grams happy. Which also has her actually racing to find Jinshi for once, though he's not in a mood to enjoy it.

Dang, if only Maomao had just been honest that she didn't want to leave, she probably would have stayed. I mean, I get why she tried to deflect and emphasize that she's a loyal servant...but it just makes Jinshi feel even more that he has to let her go because he doesn't want that to be her life any more. Is this like a romcom misunderstanding or something?

Welp, Maomao lost her job and is back at the brothel and being put to work, though it's nice in the sense that it makes her get dressed up again.

I just love the visual of Gaoshun having to keep Smol Jinshi happy.

Beautiful women, boobs, music, singing, dancing, Maomao awkwardly trying to put on her best face while serving people...what more could you ask for? Well, other than Maomao reuniting with Jinshi.

It's funny how yet again Maomao fools Jinshi with her dolled up look to the point where he doesn't recognize her...though lucky Jinshi getting to feel her fingers across his skin. And the two finally realize the misunderstanding and that Maomao was actually fine being at the palace, giving Jinshi incentive to buy her back. And as a little treat he manages to steal a kiss of sorts by brushing his fingers across her lips and placing his own across the lipstick on her fingers...and did we mention Maomao's Big Sis Princesses and Gaoshun are watching this display?

Snow! Perfect for Christmas time and Maomao recollecting on everything she's been through up to this point with an insert song flashback sequence! Also a nice recap as we close the cour out.

Jinshi is learning. Buy Maomao with the money but buy her affection with herbs. Maomao and her grams are both deliriously happy when you give them what they want.

This is even better. Because by firing her, all connections to kidnapper (who listed her with fake family name which connected to Fengming) was gone.

でも、猫猫も壬氏も残ってほしいと思ってたのに、彼女の側は身分のしきたり、彼の側は優しさのせいで、二人とも悲しい思いをすることになったのがアホらしい。
ただ、猫猫が借金を返すためだけじゃなく、あそこで過ごす時間を実は楽しんでたって認めたのはすごく好き。それと、やり手婆に売られないように十分な金を渡しておいた壬氏は運が良かったな……今のところは

Crazy how many connections Fengmin had in the rear palace, basically 4% of the whole workforce there, purging all that is a lot work.

But stupid how both Maomao and Jinshi wanted for her to stay, ut due to societal norms on her side, and kindness on his side, they both ended up sad.

But I love how Maomao acknowledged that she actually enjoyed her time there beyond just paying off her debt. And Jinshi is lucky that he gave her enough money to prevent the Grandma from selling her off... yet

いやあ、中国の刑罰がどれだけ容赦ないか忘れてた。風明は処刑されただけじゃなく、一族も体罰を受けて、風明の家と取引してた人たちも、一族ほど重くはないにしろ罰を受けてる。
猫猫と壬氏の会話は真面目な場面のはずなんだけど、二人のすれ違いっぷりに声出して笑っちゃった。猫猫は仕事にしがみついて頼み込まずに、毅然として誇りを保とうとしたのに、壬氏はそれを無理やり残らされてると受け取った。どうやら猫猫は交渉が下手らしい。あれを交渉と呼べるならだけど！ｗ
それにしても早かったな！解雇されたばかりなのに、もう豊満なお姉さんたちと一緒に働いてる。ただ、手伝いで働いてるだけで、自分の客は取ってないみたいだ。三人を引き立てる役でそこにいるだけ。
ほら見ろよ！同じ宴に見覚えのある顔が。壬氏が猫猫と話してるって気づくまで何分もかかったのが最高。化粧ってすごいな。猫猫がまだ客を取ってないって知ったあとの壬氏の反応は爆笑ものだった！
すれ違いがやっと解けてほっとした！後宮の外で二人がやり取りすると関係性が変わって、猫猫ももっと遠慮なく話せる。あの二人のやり取りは全部良かった！女華と梅梅がずっと見守ってたのも最高。
あの口紅のシーンはすごく良かった！猫猫ですら壬氏に完全に無反応ってわけじゃないらしい。宴があそこで終わっちゃったのは残念。ああいう場でのやり取りをもっと見たかった。
そしてついに！壬氏は本当に猫猫を買い取った。それだけじゃ足りないとばかりに、虫から生える珍しい薬草まで猫猫に用意してた。ルパンダイブをかますのも最高。もっとも、買われたのが自分だってことにすら気づいてなかったみたいだけど。ｗ

Man, I forgot how brutal Chinese punishments are. 壬氏は猫猫が着飾るたびに毎回気づけないのかね？それにしても猫猫は、着飾ったときの自分がどれだけ美人か卑下しすぎだろ。
今までで二人がいちばん素直で、いちばんロマンチックだったのはたぶんこの回だな。壬氏はあの猫猫の反応を、彼女の唇の味みたいにじっくり噛みしめるんだろうな笑
全部お膳立てして得意げな高順のことも忘れちゃいけない。大した男だよ！
壬氏は彼女の自由を金で買い、好意を珍しい薬草で買った！本当に学んでるな！これで猫猫は、また宮中の陰謀に関わるべき場所に戻ったわけだ。

I wonder if Jinshi is going to keep failing to recognize Maomao every time she gets dressed up? Maomao shouldn't put down how much of a stunner she is when she gets dolled up though.

That was probably the most open and romantic the pair have been with each other this whole time. Jinshi is going to savor that Maomao reaction like he savored the taste of her lips lol.

Let's not forget about Gaoshun and his pride at putting all of this together. What a guy!

Jinshi bought his girls' freedom and bought her affection with a rare herb! He really is learning! And Maomao is back where she needs to be for more palace intrigue.

It is for the shot where the girls and MaoMao enter the room and you can just make out jinshi sitting there, still growing mushrooms in the background of it.

“The Eunuch and The Courtesan” is a very nice title. I could genuinely see a whole book or even series being titled that.

No specific amount is ever mentioned, but it seemed to be enough to strip Maomao of her pay in the rear palace.

猫猫は妓楼より後宮にいたほうがいいと思う。妓楼だと、やり手婆がしびれを切らすか、もっと悪けりゃどこかのゲス野郎が安い妓女を買おうとしただけで、客を取らされることになる。後宮だって相手を怒らせたら危ないけど、少なくともそこなら壬氏が味方についてるし、好きな薬師の仕事もできる。

OK Gaoshun definitely did that on purpose.

I think she's better of in the palace that at the brothel. At the brothel all it takes is for the matron to get impatient, or worse, some sleazebag decides to grab a cheaper courtesan, and she's forced to do s*x work. While the palace has dangers if you piss off the wrong person, at least there she'll have Jinshi as an ally, and she can do the Apothecary job she likes.

こういうイメージソングつきのモンタージュは正直好きになれない。水増しか、なんちゃって総集編にしか見えない。場面を盛り上げるどころか、数分間エピソードの流れが完全に止まっちゃう。

Can't say I'm a fan of these image song montages. Just comes across as filler / faux-clip show. Rather than elevate the scene, they bring the flow of the episode to a complete stop for a couple minutes.

Agreed. It can be done well, but this isn't "done well". Just a lazy way to stretch the runtime. There was plenty of ways to use that time better. And instead it's an unneeded rehash, twice in four episodes. Wonder if it's the same director on both this one and the 9th.

この作品大好き。猫猫がただ何かしてるのを何時間でも見ていられる。ほんとにいいキャラ。猫猫と壬氏の関係については好きなときと微妙なときがある。コメディとしての掛け合いは最高なんだけど、壬氏は猫猫にちょっと気味悪がられてるし、二人のやり取りが本格的な恋愛ものに移っていってほしいのかは自分でもよく分からない……それに壬氏が宦官なのかどうかもまだ分からない。
この作品は、描かれる社会に根づいた力の不均衡をごまかさずに描いてて、その中を猫猫が渡っていく様子は、笑えてハラハラしてドラマチックでもある。そして悲しくもある……猫猫は作中の誰にも負けない頭の良さなのに、命はいつも危険にさらされてて、その時々で彼女を支配する力を持った変わり者の気まぐれ次第なんだよ。まさにこの回でも、妓楼の客に売られる未来を考えてたし。結局、彼女にとっての「救い」は、壬氏に直接恩を受ける身になることみたいだしな。

I love this series. I could watch hours and hours of Maomao just doing whatever; such a great character. I run hot and cold with her and Jinshi; they have great comedic chemistry but he kinda creeps her out and I'm not sure I want their interactions transition to a full romance story... and I'm still not sure whether he is a eunuch or not.

The show doesn't sugar coat the power imbalances inherent in the society depicted, and seeing Maomao navigate it remains both funny, thrilling, and dramatic. And also sad... she's as intelligent as any character in the show, and her life is constantly at risk and at the mercy of whatever weirdo that might hold power over her at the moment. Such as in this very episode, where she contemplates a future where she is sold to some patron of the brothel. And in the end, her "salvation" is being beholden to Jinshi directly, it seems.

So I gotta ask, since hes paid her debts hes kinda bought her now right? So she will be working for him then? I think I would feel bad if she doesnt get to go back to being the food taster she loved so much.

思ってたより水増しが多かったな。そのせいで回想シーンの選び方もちょっとイマイチで、駆け足に感じた。
でも、壬氏がしょげてうろうろしてたのが、猫猫に再会した瞬間とんでもなくパッと明るくなるのを見られたからそれで十分。猫猫は壬氏が何者か分かったのに、もう少し警戒しないのが意外だな。
とはいえ、身分の差が大きすぎて先が無いから、壬氏の気持ちは届かないだろうな。原作の小説がその現実から外れていくのかもしれないし、それならそれで構わないけど。
もう一つ、年季奉公や奴隷制をそれなりに繊細に扱ってる作品って、今のところこれくらいしか無い気がする。

A bit more filler than I would have liked, the flashbacks felt a bit poorly chosen and rushed because of that.

But watching Jinshi mope around and then brighten up immeasurably when he sees Maomao again was worth it. Now that Maomao knows who he is, I am surprised she isn’t a bit more paranoid about him.

That all being said, his feelings won’t penetrate because the class divide is too much and there is no future in it. Maybe these novels will deviate from that reality, which I’d be okay with.

Another thing is this is one of the few shows that thus far has handled indentured servitude / slavery with some delicacy.

Gaoshun said that he need to speak with 'that' military officer (Rihaku), implying he will get information about the house Maomao would be working at, which allowed him to organize the party for Jinshi.

8分38秒あたりで、猫猫のことでへこんでる壬氏を見たあと、高順が「あの武官と話してみる」って言ってる（つまり李白。猫猫が里帰りのときに会いに行ってた男）。たぶん妓楼のことを聞いたんだろう。

At 8:38 after seeing Jinshi down bad for maomao, Gaoshun said he will speak to that military officer (i.e lihaku the dude maomao used to visit home). He probably asked him about the brothel.

Jinshi didn't want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing he needed. He didn't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree. He didn't need to hang his stocking there up on the fireplace, and Gaoshun can't make him happy with a toy on Christmas Day. He just wants Maomao for his own, more than anyone could ever know.

二人ともコミュニケーション失敗しすぎ。俺は壬氏より猫猫のほうが悪いと思う。逆より、猫猫のほうが壬氏の考えをずっと読めるはずだし。まあ、壬氏の気持ちには相変わらず気づいてないんだろうけど。
とにかく24話あってほんと良かった。このアニメが必要なんだよ。OPとEDは毎日見なきゃ気が済まない。それにしても、本当に猫猫を買いに行くとは信じられない。俺にはだいぶ歪んだ話に思えるけど、皇帝の弟なら金はあるんだろうな。でも、さすがにもう自分の気持ちは否定できないだろ。あれだけの金を出すにはそれなりの理由が要るはずだし。

Their communication failed so badly, imo on Maomaos part more than Jinshi since she should have a much better read on him than the other way around, tho I guess she's oblivious to his feelings still.
Anyway I am so glad we get 24 episodes. I need this anime. The op and ed are a must watch every day. I also can't believe that he actually went and bought Maomao. Seems so f ked up to me, but guess emperors brother has enough money. Guess he cant deny his feelings any longer tho because this amount of money should need some good justification.

この作品、どんどん好きになってきた。前は本当に好きじゃなかったんだけど、俺が嫌いだった欠点のほとんどを作中でちゃんと認めてるのがいい。それに壬氏も悪いと思ってて、少なくとも猫猫に対しては自分なりに正そうとしてる。この作品を俺にとって救ってくれたのは間違いなく壬氏だ。
猫猫は前と同じ仕事に戻るの？それとも今度は宮中の別の場所？予告を見てちょっと混乱した

This show is definitely growing on me, I used to really not like it but I like that they’re actually acknowledging most of the flaws I hate. And, Jinshi even feels bad and is trying in his own way to fix it, at least for Maomao. Jinshi definitely saved this show for me.

Will Maomao get her same job? Or is she at a different part of the palace now? I was a little confused by the preview

Quite the change of pace having an episode of personal reflection and direct dealings instead of the usual intellectual puzzling over circumstances and motivations of others.

猫猫と壬氏のやり取りを見るたびに、壬氏はただの変態なのか世間知らずのバカなのか、猫猫は頭がおかしいのかちょっと変わってるだけなのか分からなくなる。でも二人のやり取りは本当に大好きだし、正反対すぎて100％いつも噛み合ってないのが最高

Each episode i see an interaction between MaoMao and Jinshi just makes me question if Jinshi is truly just a creep or a naive idiot, and if MaoMao is just f'd in the head or just kind of weird, but i really do love their interaction and that 100% of the time they do not understand each other because they are the total opposite of the other

Jinshi's rizz finally got to her lol. I thought this anime was just 12 episodes this season and happily suprised to see it's way more episodes than that.

今回は猫猫が後宮に来てからの日々を振り返る回だったな。無理やり連れてこられた状況にしては、正直そこまで悪くなかった。いろいろ良いことも悪いこともあったけど、たくさんの人と出会えた。それに、壬氏が猫猫をドギマギさせたのは今回が初めてかもしれない。今までは立場上、猫猫が口をつぐむしかなかったから。でも、はっきり伝えるのがどれだけ大事か分かるよな。猫猫の言葉を、猫猫と壬氏でまるで違う意味に受け取ってたんだから笑
玉葉妃はこの二人のことをよく分かりすぎてる。それに娘を救ってもらってから、猫猫は玉葉妃にとって家族みたいなものになってる。そりゃ猫猫を取り上げられて怒ってるに決まってるよ。

This was more of a self reflection oh how Maomao's life had been since coming to the rear palace. For a situation that she was forced in, it honestly wasn't too bad for her. It had various highs and lows, but she got to meet a great amount of people. Also this may be the first time Jinshi got Maomao flustered since every other time it was because of her position she had to bite her tongue. But it goes to show how clear communication is important because Maomao and Jinshi's interpretation on Maomao's words were vastly different lmao.

[Lady Gyokuyou knows these two all too well, not to mention Maomao has become family for her since she saved her daughter. Before I was telling my friends (we all watching this anime) “miss me with that bs you got to be an idiot to blow all your money at the Verdigris Hall. I’d be trying to make bank so I could gain influence and power!”….after seeing The Verdigris Hall in action, I now understand why mfs are as going broke…ima choose to be blow all money at that hall 10 times outta 10 too 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

猫猫と壬氏は互いの意図をすっかり誤解してて、その結果、本当は望んでないのに猫猫は宮中を去ることに。一方、猫猫が家に帰りたがってると思い込んで、その望みを尊重しようとした壬氏はどん底まで落ち込んだｗ
玉葉妃は猫猫が去ったことで明らかに壬氏に怒ってて、壬氏をさらに落ち込ませてたｗ
猫猫はすぐ妓楼で手伝いの仕事を見つけて（あの衣装と化粧の猫猫は本当にきれいだった）、そのおかげで落ち込んでる壬氏と会って話し、すれ違いが解けた。
猫猫が妓女として働いてるって聞いたときの壬氏の反応には大笑いした。でも、自分の客は「まだ」取ってないってｗ
二人が話したおかげで壬氏はいつもの調子に戻って、それがあの口紅のシーンにつながった。大胆だったな、壬氏！
さらに大胆だったのが、数日後にやり手婆への金と猫猫への薬草を持って妓楼に現れたこと（二人とも見事な反応だった）。その代わりに、ある娘を所望したわけだ。もちろん猫猫をな。
次回の予告を見ると、猫猫は外廷で仕えることになるみたいだ。あと、壬氏と一緒にいる、この衣装の猫猫（めちゃくちゃきれい）はどういう状況なのかも気になる。来週は休みだから長い2週間になるな 🙁

このアニメは好きだし、今年3番目に好きな作品なんだけど、ところどころ意味の分からない場面がある。今回のコミュニケーション不足にはモヤモヤした。猫猫が言い出さなかったのは、まあアホだけど分かる。でも壬氏は、自分にとってあんなに大事なことなのに、猫猫がどうしたいのか聞こうともしなかった。最後は丸く収まって良かったけど、間接キスみたいな少女漫画っぽい場面はほんと好みじゃない。

I love this anime, it's my 3rd favorite of the year but some scenes are just nonsensical. The lack of communication in this episode was upsetting. I get why Maomao didn't speak up even though it's kinda dumb but Jinshi didn't even bother asking her what she wanted to do even though it was so important to him. Glad it worked out in the end but man these shoujo moments like the indirect kiss are really not my cup of tea.

He literally started out asking what she wanted to do. But I think he just thought she was pushing herself to stay more out of a sense of obligation than true desire.

確かにそうだな、聞いてはいたけど猫猫が質問に答えなかったんだ。結局あの場面で引っかかってるのは、命令みたいに聞こえない形で「残っていい」って言ってあげなかったところなんだと思う。嫌いではないけど、簡単に避けられたすれ違いだったよな。

Yeah you're right he did ask her what she wanted but she didn't answer his question. I guess my problem with that scene is that he didn't offer her to stay without making it sound like an order. I don't hate it but it could've been avoided so easily.

8話にももう一つあったよ。どっちも話全体から見ればそこまで重要じゃないから（今回のこれも同じ）、スライドショー扱いでも全然よかったのに、スタジオはちゃんと動かす方を選んだんだよな。

There’s another one in episode 8. Both were perfectly fine with the slideshow treatment given they’re not that important to the story in the grand scheme of things (which is the same here in this episode), yet the studio decided to animate them.

仕事にしがみつこうと頼み込む猫猫……残念ながら、この景気じゃ猫猫だってリストラからは逃れられない！でも壬氏は可哀想だな、お気に入りの人がいなくなって拗ねてる :c
玉葉妃ですら、手放したことを壬氏が後悔するって分かってるｗ ありがたいことに、ここで今回のMVP、高順が動く。
猫猫が臨時の妓女として仕事に出ている先で、猫猫と壬氏が再会！壬氏は少しショックを受けたあと、間接キスみたいなものでぐいぐい迫る 😮 お姉さんたちも、猫猫があんな美しい若者を落とせるとは思ってなかっただろうな。で、高順は自分の作戦の成功を見守ってるｗ 猫猫とお姉さんたちのその後の会話は、盗み聞きしたらめちゃくちゃ面白かっただろうな！
最後に壬氏が緑青館を訪れて、ナレーションで壬氏が実は高貴な身分だとほぼ確定する。文字どおり箱いっぱいの金と猫猫への贈り物を持って、猫猫を身請け？？？ これは実質、壬氏が結婚を申し込むような意味合いだって言ってる人もいたけど、じゃあ猫猫は象徴的にはお妃候補ってこと？

I've seen some people say that this is basically a gesture where Jinshi effectively asks for her hand in marriage, so Maomao is symbolically a princess/empress-to-be now?

I doubt it was a coincidence. Gaoshun couldn't ask for Maomao in particular so the mad lad rented the whole brothel

クールの締めとして、猫猫がこれまでの出来事を思い出すのを見せたのは良かったと思う。漫画のキスシーンも、からかうお姉さんたちも大好き。妃を買うってことだから盛大にやらなきゃいけないし、構成の面から見ても、次の回への送り出しとして描くのは理にかなってると思う。

I think it was nice as a cour end to show her remembering the past events. I loved the kiss scene from the manga aswell as her teasing sisters. I feel from a pacing point of view it makes sense doing the send off to next episode given it has to be grand since it is a purchase of a consort.
