まさにそこ。宮廷の駆け引きにかけては、玉葉妃がいちばん賢い。だから侍女は最小限にして、心から信頼できる人だけを雇ってる。

This is the point. Gyokuyou is the smartest out of the bunch when it comes to court politics. This is why she only keeps the minimal staff but hires only the ones she absolutely trusts.

もっと陰湿な可能性もある。後宮が疫病を防ぐのを清潔さに頼ってることも分かったから、下水の水路が詰まってるのが偶然じゃないなら大問題になりうる。
外国の商人や使者を「異国の」病気の運び屋に使えば、後宮で小さなパンデミックが起きて、妃たちみんなが危険にさらされるし、皇帝の評判と政治的な立場にも大打撃になる。

It can be even more insidious, we also learn that the rear palace relies on its hygiene to avoid disease outbreaks, so the blocked sewage canal can be a big problem if it isn't a coincidence.
Using a foreign merchant or emissary as a mule for an "exotic" disease would spark a micro pandemic in the rear palace, endangering all of the concubines and deal a massive blow to the reputation and political standing of the emperor.

Just goes to show the cutthroat nature of the political landscape there.

猫猫だけが賢いわけじゃないって、改めて強調してるのがすごくいい。玉葉妃も紅娘もそれぞれ頭が切れて、猫猫が何かをほのめかすとすぐに察する。

I really like that they once again emphasize that Maomao is not the only clever person around. Lady Gyokuyō and Hongniang are both smart in their own ways and quick on the pick up when Maomao implies something.

玉葉妃と紅娘が猫猫の顔を見ただけで、猫猫と同じことに一瞬で、迷いなく気づくあの場面が大好き。
猫猫は本当に、自分にいちばん合った妃に仕えてるんだな。

I just love that scene of Gyokuyo and Hongniang just looking at Maomao's face and 100% realizing the same thing she did with absolutely no hesitation.
Maomao really is in the employ of the concubine that fits her the best.

そういうところで玉葉妃が大好き。めちゃくちゃ頭がよくて、駆け引きのやり方を分かってる。猫猫の価値に気づくのが玉葉妃なのも当然だよ。

I love Gyokuyo so much for that. She's incredibly smart and knows how to play the game. Of course she'd be the one to recognize Maomao's worth.

この作品で本当に好きなところ。猫猫をよく知ってる人たちは、猫猫が何かをほのめかし始めたら黙って聞くべきだって分かってる。

Which is something I really love in this show. The people that know Maomao well know that when she starts implying something that you shut the f**k up and listen to her.

それに猫猫はいつも気づいたことだけを言って、結論を急がない。だから事がまずくなっても、猫猫が責められることはない。

And she always says just what she notices and doesn't jump to conclusions. You not getting her in trouble if things go south.

猫猫も駆け引きのやり方を分かってるってことだね。

Which goes to show Maomao knows how to play the game as well.

ほかの子なら、猫猫だって実力を示すまでは怒鳴られて終わりだろうけど、宮廷のほとんどの人はもう猫猫に何ができるか知ってるからな。
あの腕を無視するのは賢くない。

Any other and MaoMao, until she proves her value, would probably be shouted down but then most of the court knows what she is capable of.
It's not wise to ignore her skills.

After the poisoning attempt last season I doubt anyone wouldn't at least listen to what she has to say.

主人公の賢さが、周りの無能さで決まってない作品って本当に新鮮。そのおかげで猫猫の才気がいっそう輝く。

It is so refreshing to see a show where the MC's intelligence is not determined by everybody else's incompetence. This makes Maomao's genius even more sparkling.

猫猫が万能の天才じゃないってところもいい。興味が無いことは覚える気も無いし、何も知らないこともある。人の空気を読むのも得意じゃない。でも問題解決とか、周りへの注意とか、物事を結びつける力にかけては、間違いなく天才。

I also appreciate that it shows she's not an all-around super genius. If she's not into it, she doesn't care enough to learn about it and can be clueless on certain things. And she's not always great with social cues. But when it comes to overall problem solving, attention to her surroundings, and making connections, she's absolutely a genius.

猫猫の推理や技術は「魔法」みたいに見えない。論理と証拠に基づいてる。「天才」だからいつも正しい超人なんかじゃなく、観察と推理の力がずば抜けてるだけ。失敗もするし、何でも知ってるわけじゃないし、人付き合いも不器用。でもその欠点のおかげで、長所がいっそう光るんだ。

Her deduction and skill doesn't look like "magic", it is based on logic and proof. She is no superhuman who always is right because she is a "genius", just a very bright mind with good observation and deduction skills. She can still fail, she doesn't know everything and she can be socially clumsy. But her flaws make her qualities shine even more.

そう！ この作品の、説明せずに見せる細かい描写がすごく好き。それが全部つながって度肝を抜かれるときは、なおさら最高！

Just imagine what Lihua's ladies in waiting were probably thinking:
"Oh no! She's back! Is she going to slap one of us!? Wait...she's sniffing us!?"

まあ、ひっぱたいたあとに毒入りのおしろいを浴びせかけてたしな。

I love how Jinshi is basically Maomao's straight man who has to always scold her from all the crazy antics she gets up to lol.

猫猫と一緒のときだけ、壬氏がほんの少し気を緩めるのがいい。本気で声を荒らげて叱ったのに、2人きりじゃないと思い出した瞬間に自分を抑えなきゃいけないところとか。

I like how he lets go just a little bit when he's with her. Like when he actually raises his voice to scold her and the instant he remembers they're not alone he has to rein himself in.

I like how she also gives people the opportunity to solve it themselves.

It’s so cute to see Maomao’s basically gotten herself an adorable little sister. Xiaolan is just the cutest! And it seems Maomao’s made a new friend whose interests may be just as eccentric as hers lol.
This whole plot against Gyokuyou is pretty sinister. On the surface, these items are harmless. I mean I didn’t even know Jasmine tea had any negative properties. It’s one I quite like to drink myself. But when the teas, oils, spices and perfumes are used in combination they can be dangerous for pregnant women. Very fascinating.
Seems there’s a murder? Lady Jin was poisoned… who’s next?

猫猫がいい友達として振る舞うところが見られて本当にうれしい。たいていの場面で、猫猫は皮肉屋の探偵か、仕えながら毒舌を吐く役で、後宮の陰謀や鼻持ちならないお偉方の相手をしてる。でもここでは、自分と対等で、ただ一緒に楽しみたいだけの人たちと過ごしてる。
あの医者はたしかに失礼だったけど、うん、友達と一緒の猫猫が見られるのは、いいことだし珍しいよねXD

I'm really glad we're able to see Maomao act as a good friend. Most of the time, we see her as a cynical detective and servile snarker, dealing with inner palace conspiracies and obnoxious elites. This, however, is Maomao interacting with people who are her equal and just want to have fun with her.
The doctor was indeed rude, but yeah, it's both good and rare to see Maomao around friends XD

猫猫は人生のほとんどを「妹」の側で過ごしてきたからね。逆の立場を味わえてるのはいいことだと思う。

Maomao's been on the "little sister" side for most of her life. It's nice to see her experience the other end of that.
