で、結局子昌はどういうことだったんだ？ 前回は子昌がまだ国に忠実だったって話だったけど、妻の企みに乗ったせいで皇族はひどい目に遭ったし、ほとんどを防げたのは、たまたま猫猫がそこにいたからにすぎない。腐敗した役人を一掃するって話は何の意味も無かった。抜け目ない人物って前振りがあったわりに、そんなに賢くない。
So in the end, what's the deal with Shishou? The prev ep claimed that he was still loyal to the country, but him going along with his wife's plot also lead to the royalties getting f****d and it's only by sheer luck that cat cat happened to be around to foil most of them. So all that talks about getting rid of the corrupted officials meant nothing. For all the set ups about him being shrewd, he's not very smart.

She was planning to leave country, and there would be no way she'd risk showing her face anywhere around Maomao at that point to give it back. At least by giving it to a trader its in circulation now and might find its way back to her or Jinshi.

正直、この1年に見たアニメ全部の中で、いちばん好きなキャラ。
賛否がはっきり分かれるのは分かるけど、手持ちのもので、これだけ大きなことをやってのけたのは見事だった。
かんざしを売ったのは、海外へ向かう船に乗る前に、宮中の誰かが露店で売られてるのを見つけて、それが宮中に戻ってくる（たとえば別の娘の頭に挿されて）ことがあれば、それが無事だったという猫猫への最後の伝言になるように、ってことだと思った。猫猫も、そこで見つかるかもしれないって言ってた気がする。
Genuinely my favorite character in all of anime this past year.
She's obviously very polarizing, but that she took what she had to work with and pulled off something this big was quite impressive.
My impression was that she sold the hair pin before she got on the boat overseas so that, on the chance that someone from the palace found it for sale on one of the trinket stands and somehow ends up back at the palace (perhaps on another girl's head), it would be her last message to Maomao that she made it. I think Maomao said as much that this is where they might find it.

Looking back, they do explicitly talk about the likelihood of its source being recognized, and the bullet dent is a pretty good tell.

Silver and gold hairpins are the marks of royalty and it's not just that others shouldn't make ornaments with those materials, it's that that are prohibited by law. So a merchant that finds one and is brave enough to return it to the court along with information about where he got it would probably find a heafty reward for bringing it back to where it belongs
It's basically inevitable that it ends up back in jinshi's hands and when they see there's a bullet hole and learn of the girl who sold it, they will know that she survived
子翠は本当に大した子だったし、これこそ子翠が計画してたことだと思う。
このあたりの細部は全部素晴らしかった。子翠が卓から蝉を手に取ったとき、そのまわりには宮中で過ごした日々を表しそうなものが並んでた。
大好きな虫を選んだことで、中にいた本当の人間は、最初からずっと楼蘭妃じゃなく子翠だったって確かめてるみたいだった。
She really was something else, and this is almost certainly what she planned.
All the details about this were great. When she picked the cicada up from the table, it was surrounded by possible symbols of her past time in palace.
By choosing her beloved insects instead, it's like it was confirming Shisui was the real person inside all along, not Loulan.

Maomao had said she got no comfort when she cried as a child, so she stopped crying. She just was able to repress it.And we had never seen her current self cry on screen, until she read that letter. She couldn't repress this time.
これは、猫猫が宮廷の陰謀に対処して、謎や政治の問題を解くだけの物語じゃない。長いあいだ諦めたり抑え込んだりしてきた感情を、たとえ痛くても、もう一度見つけて解き放つ物語でもあるんだ。
This isn't just a story about Maomao dealing with court intrigue and solving mysteries/political problems, it's a story about her rediscovering and letting free the emotions she had so long given up on or repressed for so long, even when they hurt.

That only shows she values her friendship with Shisui and Xialan.

Especially because she went out of her way not to view it as a friendship for so long until the very end, when she couldn't deny it any longer or the emotions she felt from said friendship.

Rewatching the OP destroyed me with all of the symbolisms surrounding Xiaolan and Shisui at the end.
エンディングは、気の合った2人が遠くへ行ってしまって、猫猫が前より少しだけ寂しくなった、ってところでまとめてた。
The Ending was basically around this point that she is just a little more lonely than she was given both of the people she got on with have moved away.
それには本当に驚いた。猫猫の涙を見るのってこれが初めて？ 1期を見返して、2期を見始めたのもそんなに前じゃないから、ちょっとバカな質問だけど…金魚並みの記憶力なんだ。
I was genuinely surprised about that. Is that the first time we see a tear from Maomao? A slightly stupid question, given that I re-watched S1 and began watching S2 not too long ago, but yeah... I tend to have a goldfish memory.

I‘d love that too, but I‘m not getting my hopes up. Shisui saying something like „the other side of the ocean sounds good“ at the end there kinds implies she‘s gonna hop countries to start a new life (with new name and all) so unfortunately seems unlikely they cross paths again. Though would love to be wrong here.

I mean Jinshi is also definitely spoiled and a fair bit impulsive so it wouldn't be completely out of the ordinary, but all of that's probably really amped up right now.
I'm sure there's also relief from not feeling like he has to hide his identity from Maomao anymore and thus also feeling like maybe he can act on how he feels, too.

I think a large part of the reason Maomao isn't fighting back is the fact that she's now aware that he doesn't have to ask or take into account her opinion on the matter. Jinshi's status is such that he could simply order her to come with him, and she'd have no choice -- but he's still giving her the option to say no. Which, to modern sensibilities, seems like a very small thing... but we're having this conversation in a country where slavery is only kinda-sorta outlawed.
Also, the scar seems to be doing something for her, if her focus on it is anything to go by.

この作品は、語らずに見せる技を本当に極めてる。楼蘭妃の死にひどく打ちのめされた翠苓が、子どもたちが助かったと聞いてすぐに元気を取り戻すところから、3人組がもう戻ってこないと知って、小蘭の手紙を読みながら涙を流す猫猫まで。
それにしてもあのエピローグ、いったいどうやって生き延びたんだ？ 自分を玉藻と名乗って、海を渡りたいって言ってたのは、彼女の物語にまだ続きがあるってことだよな。いつかスピンオフはあるのかな。
This series really has mastered the art of showing and not telliong from Suirei's reaction from how devastated she was from Loulan's death to instantly perking up after hearing that the children survived to Maomao shedding a tear reading Xiaolan's letter knowing that her trio is never coming back.
Though that epilogue, holy s**t how did she survive? Calling herself Tamamo and saying she wants to cross the seas basically indicates theres more to her story too. Wonder if she'll ever get a spinoff.
