There's not much reason to go back to the rear palace either though. I think at this point Maomao is more likely to visit the main palace with Jinshi than the rear palace.

Maomao is part of the La clan, but I sort of doubt that information is widely known. She’d probably need to have a proper ‘debut’ into high society first.

Funnily I think she is recognized as one but refuses to think of herself as one. Lakan and lahan are the main clan members and both are more than happy to consider her one of them

Can't believe that Sazen dude went from being some NPC mob character to outright having his own story arc on a path of learning medicine from two different masters.

左膳に薬の勉強の才能があったのは、うれしい驚きだった。薬師の格好のほうがしっくりくるし。猫猫も、いい弟子が見つかってうれしそうだった。趙迂はほかのことで忙しいみたいだしな。

It was a pleasant surprise to discover that Sazen has a knack for studying medicine. He certainly looks more at home as an apothecary as well.
Maomao was happy to have found a good student too. Because Chou-u seems occupied with other things.

やぶ医者は家族のため、妹が後宮に入らずに済むように宦官になったのに、バカな甥っ子はそれで叔父を恨んでる。恩知らずにもほどがある。

Guen became a eunuch for his family and to prevent his little sister becoming a courtesan and his dumb nephew hates him for it. How ungrateful.

どっちかっていうと、家の事情と、自分の女のことで抱えたストレスを叔父にぶつけてるだけな気がする。でも、やぶ医者がいなかったら、あいつには母親すらいなかったんだぞ。

I feel like it's mostly projecting his own stress from their family situation and what's going on with his girl, but he wouldn't have a mom if not for Guen.

猫猫が欲しいとも思ってなかった弟と妹。なのに、しっかりお姉ちゃんやってるんだよな。

The little brother/sister Maomao never knew she needed/wanted, but she acts like a big sister to anyways.

I'm glad we are back to Jinshi and Maomao being in the same location for an extended time again. Its a shame he can't really speak in his disguise though.

Yeah! Having them switch places, with Jinshi pretending to be the servant, was a good idea too.
I’m mostly surprised that Jinshi didn’t take this opportunity to speak more casually with Maomao. I guess that he’s trying to stick with his character - servants shouldn’t speak without permission.

羅門はほんとに人格者。やぶ医者に資格が無いのは当然分かってる。でも、だからって人を下に扱ったりしないんだよな。

Loumen is nothing but a class act. Of course he knows that Guen is not qualified, but he ain't going to treat someone worse because of that.

妹さんが、やぶ医者は猫猫を嫁として連れて帰ってきたと思い込んでたのは皮肉だよな。前に緑青館の連中が、猫猫の「好み」はやぶ医者そのものだって言ってたし。
壬氏がずっと役になりきってたのに、猫猫がほんの少し誰かとくっつけられた瞬間に崩れたのが最高。しかも相手は、壬氏に惚れてるガチの宦官だぞ（笑）

The sister thinking the quack doctor bringing Maomao home as his bride is ironic given that previously the crew at the Vedigris House identified Maomao's "type" as the quack doctor himself.
I love how Jinshi stayed in character the whole time up until the moment Maomao even remotely gets shipped with someone else and said someone else is a legit eunuch with a crush on Jinshi lol.
Like, come on man, that ship ain't happening lol.

Quite curious why Jinshi decided to bring Basen along rather than the usual Gaoshun? Was he afraid that the plot might get exposed if a high-ranking person appeared?
It's a setup episode, I suppose.

高順は皇帝の右腕で、馬閃は壬氏の右腕だからだよ。ただ、馬閃は後宮で壬氏に付くのに向いてなかったから、高順が代わりに付いてた。

It’s because Gaoshun is the Emperor’s right hand man while Basen is Jinshi’s, but Basen wasn’t fit to go with Jinshi in the Rear Palace so Gaoshun went instead.

馬閃は前のシーズンあたりから、目立つ役で壬氏に付くことが増えてる。親父の跡を継ぐための見習いみたいなもんじゃないか。家業を継ぐ修行ってやつ。

Basen's been taking on more prominent roles/ following Jinshi more often since around last season. Maybe this is essentially him being trained to take over his dad, like an apprenticeship of sort for him to take on the family biz.

馬閃「悪女楼蘭を倒すのに手を貸した俺だ！何でもできる！」
猫猫「それ、自慢になってないから」

Basen: "I helped kill the Villainess Loulan! I can handle anything!"
Maomao: "That's not the flex you think it is, bruh."

正直、演技なら高順のほうがずっと上手そう。でも、壬氏がパニッシュド壬氏になりきってる横で、馬閃がもじもじしてるのを見るのも面白いんだよな。

Honestly Gaoshun would probably be much better at acting than Basen but it's kind of fun watching him squirm while Jinshi is roleplaying as Punished Jinshi.

単に、馬閃のほうが高順より身軽で抱えてる仕事も少ないから、旅のお供に向いてるってだけだろ。

Pretty sure that's because Basen is more flexible and has less obligations than Gaoshun to accompany Jinshi on a roadtrip

何かあったときの護衛役もできるからかもな。壬氏本人も十分強いけど、皇帝が一人で行かせるわけないし。

Maybe cause he can act as a body guard if something happens (not that Jinshi isn't perfectly capable of handling things but the emperor would never allow Jinshi to go without help).

壬氏を東宮にしたら、玉葉后はかえって困ると思う。自分が皇后になるのに、東宮は別の女が産んだ子ってことになるんだから。かといって、壬氏の母親が代わりに皇后になれるわけでもないしな。

I think accepting Jinshi as crown prince would only cause more problems for Gyokuyou, since then she would be the Empress while the crown prince is from another woman. It's not like Jinshi's mother isn't entirely unavailable to be Empress instead, either.

まあ、あれはただの推測だけどな。猫猫の読みはズバリ当たってたけど。猫猫のほうが、壬氏の修行パートを本人よりわかってそうなのはちょっと笑える。
猫猫は、壬氏との縁があるから代わりの薬師が要るって話もしてたしな。行間を読むと、壬氏が自分の人生に関わってくるのを、ある程度受け入れてる気がする。

To be fair, that was just speculation - despite Maomao being right on the money. I do find it a little amusing that she’s probably more aware of Jinshi’s training arc than the man himself.
Maomao did mention how she’ll need replacement apothecary given her connection with Jinshi. Reading between the lines here, I do feel like she’s accepted his involvement in her life to some extent.

趙迂と女の子は、一生ほぼ離れない幼なじみになりそうな空気がある。で、思春期になって、思ってもみなかった気持ちにお互い向き合うやつ。

Chou-U and Zulin give me that vibe of two childhood friends who are going to be absolutely inseparable for most of their life until they hit puberty and then have to reckon with feelings for each other they never expected to have.

考えてみたら、趙迂と女の子がくっつくのは自然なんだよな。緑青館はみんな仕事で忙しいし、子どもはあの二人だけだし。

I was thinking about it, and I suppose that it’d be fairly normal for Chou-u and Zulin to gravitate towards each other. Everyone busy with their jobs, whereas they’re the only two kids in the Verdigris House.

壬氏が新しいキャラを作って、猫猫の嫁入りの話が出るまでは完全になりきってるっていうのが、たまらなく好き。

I just love the idea of Jinshi coming up with a new persona that he stays utterly in-character in up to the point where Maomao's hand in marriage comes up.

壬氏の変装で過去一の出来かもしれないけど、猫猫はいつもどおりあっさり見抜く。なのに壬氏のほうは、変装した猫猫をいまだに見抜けないんだよな。

Might be the best Jinshi disguise so far but as always, Maomao easily sees through it whereas he himself still can't identify a disguised Maomao.

羅門はだいぶ年だから、やぶ医者は助手として必要なんだろ。後宮で羅門の跡を継げるのも、いちばんはあいつだしな。そのへんの決まりが変わるのも時間の問題だろうな。

Loumen's pretty old so Guen is a much needed assistant for Loumen probably. It is also the best successor the rear palace has for Loumen as well...
It is probably just a question of time until they do some kind of rule changes for that.

I thought Jinshi dropped the food out of jealousy of the thought of MaoMao actually being with the quack doctor but seeing MaoMao’s reaction I am definetly wrong. Since Jinshi has his very childish side I could see him being the one character who would actually believe that impossible scenario and get jealous.

趙迂と女の子、息ぴったりのコンビ。ただ、ずっと一緒にいるから、女の子にも趙迂のクセがうつってきてるんだよな。おかげで、猫猫に同じ扱いをされてる。うるさいと、ほっぺをつねられるやつ。

Chou-u and Zulin made such an adorable duo – they're so in-sync with the other. Having said that spending so much time with him she began to pick up his mannerisms had the consequence of Maomao treating her like she did to him (aka pinch his cheeks when they're bugging her).

I came to respect the quack doctor for being a homie at the end of the day but I never would've guessed just how deep that aspect of him went. Can't take him being in the spotlight again too seriously after the sketch of "him" as Maomao's ideal man though lol.

I like to think he also came up with this deep, complicated, backstory for his new persona too.

When you've got the Quack around you, he'd definitely melt into a pile of goo if he knew who the servant really was hehe. Plus he'd unknowingly share info if someone pestered him enough.
