Probably didn't exist in ancient not-China, but it exists today. Where I work we use an alloy called indalloy-117 (the 117 is its melting point in F).

It's used in complex 3d milling applications to literally clamp a part in place by freezing it to the grinding machine. It'll melt if you dip it in warm water or shine a heat lamp on it for a few seconds.

そこまで非現実的でもない。小さい問題が2つ、でかい問題が1つ。
A）時間が短すぎる
B）当時の技術だと、光を集めるには金魚鉢が文字どおりのレンズになってなきゃいけない（それに円錐より光線のほうがずっと作るのが難しい）
C）溶け方にムラがあったり金属が引っかかったりしたら、今の時代なら一発でアウト。毎回同じように溶けるなんてありえない

A) Way too short a time
B) Fishbowl would have to be a literal lens at their tech level to focus light. (Also a beam would be far harder to make than a cone)
C) Uneven melting or metal getting stuck would instantly ruin it in the modern era. There is no way that the process would be consistent.

Did the adaption change the conclusion of this mystery? its been a while since I read the manga, but I don't recall that little heart to heart between the brothers + them working together at the end. As nice of an ascendance story that is, I don't think it would be a happy ending for either of our protagonists. Neither Maomao nor Jinshi want the throne. Maomao especially, since she almost certainly wouldn't be able to enjoy poisoning herself if she's the Empress.

That old goldsmith sure loved his riddles. We got a cabinet, a fishbowl, a shed and a cryptic message imploring the boys to have tea together like the old days. It all seemed so random until Maomao put it together. The goldsmith really must have loved his boys if he did all this just to bring them back together. I guess parents really *don’t* stop worrying about their kids even after they’re grown.

Lakan is a truly loathsome individual. I do not like that guy one bit. What is happening? But more importantly, what’s Jinshi planning with the makeup? He doesn’t really need it if he wants to go on a little stroll through town.

Not all cases involve poison or murder, some involve riddles, contraptions, and a symbolic last will and testament...especially from a father who just wants his kids to get along and do what they do best.

Lakan is smart, cunning, but seems super seedy and suspicious, especially the way he interacts with Jinshi and (indirectly) Maomao.

The father of the three brothers probably died of (lead?) poisoning. This is probably why MaoMao recommended the youngest brother go see his father if he starts to get sick as well.

なるほど、壬氏は羅漢に頼まれたとおり、猫猫をこの金属細工と息子たちの件に向かわせるわけか。解きがいのある楽しい謎だ。猫猫も少なくとも興味はあるみたい。ははは、猫猫が行くと聞いたときの壬氏と婆さんの絵柄の変化とリアクションよ。正直あれは「小屋」どころじゃないだろ。名探偵猫猫、出動！へへ、あの男はとげとげしいけど、少なくとも猫猫とはうまくやってる。上の兄2人は正直うざくてダメだな。恩知らずで自分勝手なクソガキども。
はは、猫猫の「高順様に似てる！」へへ。ちょっとしたお笑いシーン。猫猫が好き勝手やってるのはいつ見ても楽しい。太陽の光！インディ・ジョーンズっぽくなってきた！名探偵猫猫を信じろ！あれはうまい仕掛けだな、本当にできるのかな。へへ、人に聞く前に真似してみた経験から、ずいぶんいい教訓を得たもんだ。猫猫は賢い。兄弟がバカなのが残念。あーあ、兄弟が誤解でバカやってただけ…親父さんが死ぬ前にそういうことを話しておけばよかったのにな。
おやおや、猫猫の「父親」についての思い、ふーむ。それに将来、自分のおやじの客を増やしてるし、へへ。羅漢は明らかに全部知ってたな、笑。ほんとに面白いやつ。でも壬氏の言うとおり、うざくもある。「良い人材を埋もれさせておきたくなかった」、まさにそれ。もっともな話だけど、よく考えると意味深でもある。猫猫のことも言ってたのかな。
へへ、壬氏の言葉を聞いたろ、猫猫。化粧で壬氏をきれいにする時間だ

Ah yes, seems Jinshi gonna do as Rakan asked and send Maomao out to this issuew ith metalworking and his sons and such. Fun riddle/puzzle to solve. She seems interested at least. Hahah Jinshi and the old lady's art style change/reactions about her going to do this. That's quite a "shack" tbh. Detective Maomao on the case! Hehe, the dude might be prickly, but he's at least working with Maomao well. The older two brothers are quite annoying/crap imo. Ungrateful selfish little shits.

Haha, Maomao, "he looks like Gaoshun!" heh. Silly little comedic bit. Maomao just doing as she pleases is always fun. Sun beam! We being sorta like Indiana Jones now! Always trust Detevtive Maomao! That is a neat little trick, wonder if it'd work. Heh what a nice lesson she learned from the experience of trying to replicate before asking. Maomao so smart. Too bad the brothers are stupid. D'aww just brothers being stupid about misunderstandings... a pity they didn't just talk to their dad about such things before his death.

Oh my, Maomao's thoughts about "Father" hmmm. And getting more business for her father in the future 😉 heh. Rakan clearly knew everything lol. He really is an interesting dude. But I agree with JInshi, annoying too. "Didn't want to keep good talent buried" yes indeed. A valid thing, but also interesting when you think more on it. Wonder if he was talking about Maomao too.

this episode felt like 5 minutes

他の男から自分の机に持ち込まれた案件に猫猫を関わらせるのを、壬氏がいかに乗り気じゃないかが伝わってくる。
金属細工師、技を全部は伝えなかった3人の息子、質もバラバラな3つの形見、そしてお茶会をしたいという願い…これがどう結びつくのか？毒は絡まないけど、猫猫は頭を使う挑戦には抗えない。
馬閃は猫猫の何が気に入らないんだ？とはいえ、いざとなるとそこそこうまく協力できてるみたいだけど。それに猫猫は馬閃を見て高順を思い出す？偶然じゃないだろうな。
まあ、この家族には間違いなく緊張がある。上の兄2人は父親と父親が遺したものに対して遠慮なく不満をぶつけていて、末っ子は家族をまとめようとしてるけど兄に言い返す自信が無い。母親はなんとか切り盛りしようと頑張ってる。でもどう見ても理想の幸せな家族じゃない。
それでも猫猫は少なくともピースをつなぎ合わせて、父親が遺したものに気づく…鍵を作る仕掛けで、開けると中には違う金属が入った棚があって、それぞれのやり方で組み合わさるようになってる。父親と同じく金属細工が分かる末っ子は、それが息子たちへの最後のメッセージだったと気づく。それぞれの仕事と才能を理解して尊重していたこと、そして一緒に働くときこそ一番力を発揮できるということ。それで末っ子はやっと素直になって、兄たちに言いたいことを言えた。
そして終わりよければすべてよし。兄弟はまた仲良くなって一緒に働いてるし、猫猫は自分のおやじの宣伝までして、末っ子が父親より体に気をつけるようにしてる。
父親の子供への想い…猫猫がこの件に関わったのには、家族の問題を解決する以上の何かがあったんじゃないかな？
羅漢は抜け目なくずる賢い男で、その場で一番頭が切れるのが当たり前になってる。言ってるよりずっと多くのことを知っていて、壬氏は手のひらで転がされてる気分なんだろう。気に入っていた妓女がどうなったかという謎を、その世界を知ってる人間（たぶん猫猫）に解かせるように残していったのも、壬氏が猫猫に勧めそうな飲み物を置いていったのも、たぶんわざとだな。
壬氏と猫猫の関係が、猫猫が壬氏の化粧を手伝うところまで進むとは思わなかった。待てよ…来週は後宮の外でデートなのか！？

You can tell how unenthusiastic Jinshi is about asking for Maomao to get involved in a case brought to his desk from another man.

A metalworker, three sons he never passed on his full skills to, three different and varying quality of mementos, and a desire for a tea party...how does it all come together? It doesn't involve poison, but Maomao can't resist the intellectual challenge.

What does Basen have against Maomao? Though when it comes down to it they seem to work together well enough. And he reminds her of Gaoshun? I doubt that's a coincidence.

Well, there's definitely some tension in this family. The two older brothers are outspoken and resentful towards their father and what he left them, the younger brother is trying to hold the family together but isn't confident enough to speak up against his brother, and the mother is doing her best to manage things. But this definitely isn't an ideal happy family.

But Maomao is able to at least put the pieces together and realize the fathers' lasting legacy...a trick to create a key that opens up desks filled with different metals, all meant to work in tandem in their own way. The younger brother, understanding metalwork like their father, realizes it was his last message to his sons: to make them realize he understood and respected their individual vocations and talents and that they would be at their best working together. And this was enough for the younger brother to finally be honest and speak up to his siblings.

And all's well that ends well. The brothers are close again and working together and Maomao even gets to advertise her dad so the younger brother takes better care of his health than his father did.

Fathers' intentions towards their children...I wonder if there was more to Maomao being involved in this case than just resolving the family situation?

Lakan is a shrewd and cunning man and used to being the smartest man in the room, and he knows far more than he's telling, and Jinshi feels like he's dancing around his finger. It was also probably deliberate that he left the mystery of what happened to the courtesan he fancied to be answered by someone with experience in that world (likely Maomao) and left a drink that Jinshi would likely offer Maomao.

I never thought Jinshi and Maomao's relationship would progress to the point where she's helping him with his makeup. Wait...are they going on a date outside the palace next week!?

弟が「3人は対等だ」と語るところはアニメオリジナル。

医学絡みかどうかにかかわらず、猫猫が謎を解こうとしてるのを見るのはいつも楽しい。でも、亡くなった父親のことをあんなふうに言ってた上の兄2人が、棚をぶっ壊さなかったのは意外だった。結局のところ、2人もやっぱり父親の遺志は尊重したかったんだろうな。

Lakan definitely had Maomao in mind when he was saying talents can’t be wasted and must be revealed. Looks like his plan might be to have Maomao at a better role to use her talents entirely.

実際の合金について説明すると。
あれはローズ合金って呼ばれてるもの。だいたい鉛25%、錫25%、ビスマス50%の混ぜ物で、箱の大きさと一致する。融点はかなり低くて華氏208度／摂氏98度。はんだ付けや充填材、型の鋳造に使える。
正直、金魚鉢の虫眼鏡トリックでローズ合金が溶けるほど熱くなるかは分からない。最初はウッド合金っていう別の合金かと思ったんだ。融点はさらに低くて摂氏70度／華氏158度なんだけど、4つ目の金属のカドミウムが入ってるから、必要な金属の数にも箱の比率にも合わないんだよな。
で、猫猫が体の不調を言い当てられた理由は、息子たちの父親がたぶん鉛中毒だったから。昔の配管工や金細工師、ピューターの鋳物師は、仕事で鉛に触れてこれに苦しんだ人が多かったんだ

As to explain the actual metal alloy.
The stuff is known as rose metal. It's is a mixture of around 25% lead 25% tin and 50% bismuth which matches the box sizes. Has a pretty low melting temperature of 208F/98C. Can be used for soldering or filler or mold casting.

To be honest not sure if the fishbowl magnifying glass trick would actually be warm enough to melt the rose metal. I actually thought it was another alloy known as woods metal which has an even lower melting point at just 70C/158F but it has a 4th metal in it:cadmium and so doesn't fit that number of metals needed or the box ratios.

Now the reason maomao is able to guess medical issues is the boys' father probably had lead poisoning. Lots of old time plumbers, goldsmiths or pewter casters suffered this due to lead exposure during their jobs.

太陽が空を通る道筋は毎日少しずつ変わる。
全部合わせると、マンハッタンヘンジみたいな話になる。すべての条件がそろう1年のうちのごく特定の1週間くらいしか、このトリックは使えないってこと

Honestly not that strong but getting the right position to get enough light and the correct distance focus to focus the light on the keyhole is the issue.

So the fish bowl position is fixed.
The keyhole position is fixed.
The sunlight is going though the tree so quite a bit of possible angles are blocked. The tree leaves had fallen.
The father couldn’t have known when he was going to die and couldn’t know which day they would have the tea party.
The sun has a daily path across the sky that keeps changing a tiny bit every day
This all results in a manhattanhenge type situation where this trick would like maybe work in a very specific week of the year as all the variables came into alignment.

The preview for the next episode got my attention, as I like it when Maomao gets dressed up in a different outfit and her putting makeup on Jinshi seems interesting.

あの調査は全部見てて楽しかった。羅漢が猫猫を試すために壬氏と高順にああいう問題を送り込んでるのは明らかだけど、本当の狙いは何なんだ？

That whole investigation was so fun to watch. It is clear that Lakan is sending those problems to Jinshi and Gaoshun to test Maomao, but what exactly is his goal?

Considering how many mysteries Maomao solves, it’s weird that she still doesn’t realize who Jinshi actually is.

ガラスの金魚鉢を見た瞬間、トリックが分かっちゃった。だから個人的には謎解きはちょっと物足りなかった。
それに猫猫の本気の毒舌も見られなかった。これはみんな物足りなかったと思う

The moment I saw the glass fishbowl I knew what the trick would be. So the mystery was a bit disappointing for me personally.

And we didn’t get to see any true Maomao snark. Which is disappointing for everyone I think.

兄弟がみんな違う分野の才能を持ってたのがすごく良かった。親父が職人だからって、自分も職人にならなきゃいけないわけじゃない。猫猫の推理は冴えてるな

I was so glad, the brothers all had talents in different fields, just because your dad was a craftsman it doesn't mean that you have to be one. Maomao deductive reasoning is on point.

What was the point of MaoMao’s palace relocation? This is a mainly episodic series, but the first half of the season had some light palace intrigue as a through line. It seems like every supporting character has been largely forgotten, all of that groundwork was pointless. I’ve realized that the main reason I kept watching this show in 2023 was the amazing Ryokuoushoku Shakai OP.

結局はよくあるアドベンチャーゲームの謎解きだったけど、ちょうどいい時間帯にあそこへ行って、太陽がぴったり必要な位置にあるときに主人公が謎を解いたって、運が良すぎるだろ。
それに、虫眼鏡で集めた日光くらいの熱で数秒で完全に溶けるほど融点の低い合金って、いったいどんなのだよ？
あの不機嫌な次男が、誰とでも仲良くなれる才能の持ち主だったの？

In the end, it was a basic adventure game puzzle, but how lucky that they went there at just the right time of day, and MC figured out the riddle right when the sun was in the exact position required.

And just what kind of alloy has a melting point low enough to be completely melted in seconds by sunlight-through-a-magnifying-glass levels of heat?

The grumpy 2nd son was the one with the ability to be friendly with anyone?

Good episodes but i hope we go back to more central plot development.

家族が家族らしい結末を迎えられたのは嬉しいけど、父親が自分の気持ちを素直に言ってれば済んだ話なんだよな。猫猫が解いたあのとんでもない謎があっただけじゃなく、父親は自分の気持ちを一度も言葉にしなかった。
ありがたいことに、父親の真意を分かってくれる末っ子がいた。でもさ、それぞれに強みがあって、その強みを生かせば家族で協力できるって言えば済むのに、どんだけ手間かけてんだよ。気持ちを伝えるっていう楽な道を選ばずに、5倍の手間をかける男もいるってことがよく分かる。
いやほんと、羅漢がなんであんなに壬氏の神経に障るのかよく分かった。壬氏の仕事を増やすくせに、壬氏が頼みごとをした途端に逃げるんだもん。まあ次回はどう控えめに言っても面白そうだ笑

You know I am happy the family got there family ending, but the problem could have been expressed if the father was open about his feelings. Not only we had this crazy puzzle that Maomao solved, but he didn't even express his feelings into words.

Thankfully the youngest son was there as he understood what his father meant. But man so much effort rather then just telling them they each have their own strengths and in fact the family can work together using each strength. Really shows that for some men would go 5 times the amount of work instead of doing the easy route and expressing their feelings.

Man you really understand why Lakan really gets on Jinshi's nerves. He puts more stress on Jinshi's plate, but as soon as Jinshi makes a request he taps out. Well next episode seems very interesting to say the least lol.

おお、ついに話のおいしいところに入ってきたな。
羅漢はほんとに抜け目ないキャラだ。壬氏と猫猫の両方を試してたように感じる。あの爺さんが来るたびに壬氏が警戒するのも責められない。小さなしくじりひとつが波及して、頭痛どころじゃ済まないことになりかねないんだろう。笑 ただ分からないのは、なんで壬氏を試してるのかってこと。
それにしてもあの予告…化粧した猫猫は別物だな。笑

Oh, we're finally getting to the juicier parts of the story.

Lakan is such a cunning character. It feels like he was testing both Jinshi and Maomao. Can't fault Jinshi for getting his guard up whenever the old man visits him. One small blunder can ripple and domino into more than a headache for him probably. Lol Only question is why he's testing Jinshi.

That preview though... Maomao in makeup is a different beast. Lol

今週の猫猫補給！今回は前回ほのめかされてた遺産の件を解決する
たぶん今までで一番心温まる事件だった！親として、自分がいなくなっても子供たちが成功して協力できること以上に望むものは無い。死んでもなお、あの金属細工師が息子たちの父親であり続けてるのが美しい。作り方をそのまま渡すんじゃなく、技術を受け継ぐために最後の課題で息子たちを集めることで、人として成長させたんだ。
もちろん猫猫がいなきゃ何も始まらなかった。息子たちは親父が役立たずのものしか遺さなかったと思い込んで、現状維持で満足してたからな。一番のヒントのお茶会はずっと目の前にあったのに笑。太陽で金属を溶かして鍵を作るのはすごくかっこよかった。あの金属細工師は本当に優秀だったのに、たぶん仕事のせいで命を落としたのは残念だ。
猫猫が息子たちに鉛中毒のことを何も言わなかったのは意外！この時代だと常識じゃないから、言ってあげたらすごく助かるのに…
この羅漢ってやつは画面に出てくるたびにイライラする。人の命をやたら軽く扱うし、傲慢な雰囲気を出してる。一発ぶん殴られた方がいい…先週自慢してた妓女の話を、今度はとぼけようとしてるし。まあ壬氏はあいつの助言に従うつもりなんだろうな。妓女のことを知りたけりゃ、自分が妓女になるしかないってか笑
あの引きの終わり方は最高だった。壬氏に化粧を頼まれたときの猫猫の顔が見事だった。
またいい回だった。ここ数話は埋め草っぽいって言ってる人を見かけるけど、まったく同意できない。どれもすごく良かったよ

Weekly dose of Maomao! This time we’re solving the inheritance case that was hinted at last episode

This was probably the most wholesome case we’ve had so far! As a parent there’s nothing more you want than for your kids to succeed and be able to work together in your absence. It’s beautiful that even in death, the metalworker continues being a father to his sons. By having them come together for one last task in order to pass the technique on rather than outright giving them the recipe, he helped them grow as people.

Of course none of that is possible without Maomao since they were pretty much content to sit back and maintain the status quo, i.e thinking their dad left them nothing but useless stuff. The biggest hint, the tea party, was right in front of them the whole time lol. Using the sun to melt the metal and make a key was really cool. The metalworker was so brilliant, it’s a shame his job likely cost him his life.

I’m surprised Maomao didn’t mention anything about lead poisoning to the sons! That’s not common knowledge at this point in history, so that would be a big help..

This Lakan dude grinds my gears every time he’s on screen. He’s just so flippant with human lives and gives off this arrogance. He needs a good punch.. now he wants to play dumb about the courtesan story he was bragging about last week. Well, Jinshi’s just gonna take his advice I guess. If you want to know about the courtesans, gotta become one lmao.

That cliffhanger ending was great. Maomao’s face when Jinshi asked her to do his makeup was brilliant.

Another good episode. Been seeing people say the last few eps feel like filler, can’t disagree more. These have been really good

毎週の名探偵猫猫回に見えるけど、思ってるよりずっと大きな何かにつながるかもしれない（つながる？）って確信してる。
このアニメはほんとに興味をそそられる

It looks like a weekly Detective Maomao episode. But I'm quite sure it may (will?) connect to something much bigger than it supposes to be.

This show is so intriguing.

今回はあんまり好きじゃなかった。このアニメでおなじみの大好きなキャラ同士のやり取りが少なかったし、謎解きの話はのろのろ進んでるように感じた。とはいえ、この回はいずれ何かで重要になるんだろうなとは思う。
それと羅漢は、想像しうる限り一番一緒に働きたくない人間だな。週末までこんなレベルのいい加減さに付き合いたくないよ

This episode wasn't my favorite - it missed a lot of the character interaction we've come to know and love from the series, and the puzzle plotline seemed to plod forward. That said, I'm guessing this episode will prove important at some point in the future.

Also, Lakan seems like he'd be the most miserable person to work with imaginable. I don't need to deal with this level of unprofessionalism on the weekend too 😭😭

What about Gallium? It has a melting point of around 30C/86F. iirc. At least it looks somewhat similar to that block of metal that MaoMao looked at first.

実際には、金細工や金属加工の秘伝としてガリウムを使うのは問題がある。ほとんどの金属と反応して、その金属の結晶格子を壊して脆くすることで知られてるんだ。鋼、鉄、特にアルミニウム（ドロドロにしちゃう！！！YouTubeの実験動画を見てみろ、すごいぞ）。金、銀、銅（？）みたいな金属だと、ものすごくゆっくり金属の分子を剥がしていく。ケイ素、つまり砂や粘土にくっつくんだけど、鋳型はそれで作るから、型にくっつくのはまずい。アルミニウムと同じで、インゴットを作るには電気分解で「鉱石」から分離しなきゃいけないから、たぶんめちゃくちゃ高い。それに融点が人の体温より低いから、ちょっと低すぎる。長く握ってると手に色が付くし（おお、お湯でスプーンが溶ける手品をYouTubeで調べてみろ！）。液体になるとめちゃくちゃ膨張する。
ローズ合金、ウッド合金、フィールド合金（無毒）は、鋳造に最適な金属として発明されたんだ。融点が低くて、（ある程度は）削れて、延性があって（圧力をかけても割れたり裂けたりせずに変形する）、冷えて固まるときに縮みにくくて、流し込めて、鋳型と反応しない

From the way it just melted in the sun via fishing bowl magnifying glass, gallium would be the most likely IRL metal to plug the keyhole in the chest if they ever do a life action apothecary diaries 😍🤩😍!!!!

Practically gallium as a secret technique in goldsmithing and metal working is problematical. It’s known for reacting with most other metals and destroying the crystal lattice of said metal causing embrittlement: steel, iron and especially aluminum (it makes it soup!!! Check out yt vids on this demo. Impressive). On metals such as gold, silver and copper (?) it very slowly causes it shed molecules of the metal. It sticks to silicon I.E. sand and clay which is what casting molds are made out of where sticking to the mold is bad. It’s probably really darn expensive as like aluminum to make Igots of the stuff you need to do electrolysis to separate it from its “ore”. It’s also kinda of too low temperature melting as it melting point is below human body temps. Yeah it will stain your hand if you hold it too long (oooo look up melting spoon in hot water trick on yt!). It expands like crazy when a liquid.

rose metal, woods metal and fields metal (non toxic) were invented to be excellent castable metals: low temperature melting point, machinable (to an limited extent), ductile (deforms under pressure without breaking or tearing), low shrinkage when it cools back to solid, pourable and no interactions with the casting mold.

欠点は、俺が2500Kとその後の5930Kで思い知ったように、アルミが無くてもヒートスプレッダとクーラーのコールドプレートがめちゃくちゃに傷むこと。残った液体金属を落とすのに紙やすりを持ち出す羽目になった

so long as the cold plate is 100% copper with no nearby aluminium you can use it

the benefits are however that the temperature conductivity is really high so the heat goes from the hot thing to the cooling thing faster

downside is as i found with my 2500K and later 5930K is it really fucks up the heatspreader and cooler cold plates even with no aluminium i had to get the sandpaper out to get rid of the remaining liquid metal

the PS5 uses liquid metal as well iirc
