If they're not part of the Shi clan, they may avoid execution if Jinshi and the emperor decide to be merciful (which they are) since they weren't aware of the plot. 殺すほうが筋が通るけど、ほかのやつが言ってたとおり羅漢への人質なんだと思う。今回の羅漢の反応で、猫猫の身を本気で案じてるのがはっきりしたから、命をちらつかせれば羅漢を抑え込める。殺して人質に取ってるふりをすることもできるけど、羅漢は頭が切れるから見破られる可能性が高すぎる。だから本気で抑えたいなら、本当に生かしておくしかない。

Killing her makes more sense, I suspect it is as the other anon said and she's a hostage against Lakan. His reaction this episode proves that he's emotionally invested in her well-being so they can use threats against her life to keep him in check. They could kill her and pretend to have her hostage, but Lakan is very clever and the chances of him seeing through such a ruse are too high, so if they want to put him in check they have to do it for real.

He's also managed to rise to the highest military position in the empire, and become nearly untouchable within the imperial court entirely because of his personal abilities. What I took away is that Jinshi is a far more entertaining detective to watch than Maomao.

Well he's having to use reasonable deductions, rather than Maomao pulling some convenient, case-solving factoid out like she'd just read about it in an encyclopedia. And Jinshi actually has to act fairly directly on his suspicions, while Maomao normally just passes it up the chain or keeps it to herself.

Maomao fits well within the show's usual format where each mystery is episodic and quickly resolved. However when it comes to longer arc, her genius and indifferent attitude tend to reduce the tension as we never see her struggle.
Hopefully we'd get to see her being more expressive when it comes to things not related to poison and medicine in future.

壬氏がキレたのが見どころだったかもしれないけど、壬氏が動揺してる間に高順が仕切ってたのも最高にかっこよかった。
怒り狂って血に飢えた父親の羅漢を期待してたら、ドジで過保護な父親の羅漢が出てきた。でも、それはそれで結構好き。

Jinshi snapping might've been the highlight but Gaoshun taking charge while Jinshi was all shaken up like an absolute boss was awesome too.
Expected enraged bloodthirsty dad Lakan, got goofy overprotective dad Lakan instead. And I kinda dig it.

For Lakan's case, he literally cannot see faces, so unless you are noteworthy, he cannot even remember your face.

そうだけど、羅漢は顔以外の細かいところで人を見分けるように教わってたんだよ。体格、声、話し方、身ぶり、癖とかな。たいていの人は顔で人を見分けてそこで止まるから、見落としがちな細かいところだ。
だから何話か前に、阿多妃が壬氏に変装してたのも一瞬で見破った。
だから替え玉のトリックもすぐ見抜くはず。もちろん一度は「楼蘭妃」に会ってる必要があるけど、次に出てきた「楼蘭妃」が別の女だって分かるはずだ。

Yes, but he was taught to recognize people from other details. Their build, their voice, speech patterns, their body language, mannerisms, etc. Little details that are often overlooked when most people just stop at the face to identify someone.
Which is why he instantly saw through Ah Dou's Jinshi disguise a couple episodes back.
So he would see through the body-double trick immediately. Granted he'd need to meet "Loulan" once before, but would tell that the next "Loulan" was a different woman.

壬氏があそこまでキレて、こんなに恐ろしくなるとは正直思ってなかった。楼蘭妃のふりをしてたかわいそうな侍女を泣き崩れさせるまではな。
一方で、猫猫がいなくなったと知った羅漢のほうは、思ってたよりずっと和やかだった。

Honestly didn't think Jinshi would ever get that pissed off and this terrifying until he made that poor attendant that imperosonated Loulan broke down.
Meanwhile Lakan learning about Maomao's disappearance was a lot more lighthearted than expected.

あの侍女はまだ軽く済んだほうだ。子翠の重大な罪（誰にも気づかれずに後宮を抜け出すこと）に手を貸してるって分かってたんだから。その罪に誘拐まで絡んでるとは知らなかったとしてもな。
侍女なんてもっと軽いことで処刑されてきたんだし。まあ当然、現代の目で見れば、立場の差を考えたらほぼ責任は無いけど

Attendant got off easy. She knew she was aiding Shisui in a serious crime (leaving the palace undetected) even if she didn’t know the crime also involved kidnapping.
Attendants have been executed for way less. Though obviously, from a modern perspective, she’s pretty blameless due to the power dynamic

こういう舞台設定のお決まりで考えるなら、あの宮の人間は全員処刑される可能性が高い。

If you go by usual things in this kind of setting chances are everyone in that palace will be executed.

壬氏が柘榴宮と医局の全員を処刑するか、少なくとも10人に1人は処刑しろって命じるんじゃないかと半分くらい思ってた。身内のやったことのせいで、そういう集団はつながってるってだけでほぼ詰んでるからな。

I was half-expecting Jinshi to order the whole Garnet Pavilion and the entire Medical Wing to get executed or at least decimated. By the actions of their members, they have basically been doomed those groups just by association.

壬氏は人を処刑しろって命じるには優しすぎる。皇帝ですらそこまで冷酷じゃない。でも処刑されなくても、あの人たちの運命はもう決まってる。
たぶん全員一生を牢で過ごすことになると99％確信してる。ある意味、あの古い診療所にいた年寄りの侍女たちと同じ運命だよな。上の身分の人間に捨てられて、閉じ込められる運命…

Jinshi is too kind of a person to order people to be executed. Even the Emperor isn't cruel enough to do that. But even if they don't get executed, their fates have been sealed.
I'm 99% sure all of them are going to spend the rest of their lives in prison. In a way they face the same fate as the old maids at the old clinic, doomed to be imprisoned because people of higher power threw them away...

問題は、こういうとき壬氏と皇帝の手は縛られてるってことだよ。厳しく対処しないと弱く見えて支持が揺らいで、ほかの連中が隙を狙ってくる。

The thing is in situations like this jinshi and the emperor's hands are tied as if they don't take harsh enough action they appear weak and it hurts their support to where others will look for openings.

Yes, he is, and it's not about cruelty or kindness. In this system the emperor is paramount and nothing is worse than a threat to the emperor. They have no choice but to execute everyone connected to this; to do otherwise would be a signal of weakness to the other powers in the empire and an invitation for further plots. Everyone must know that any attempt on the imperial family is met with harshest possible penalties.

I imagine she was crying less from Jinshi’s outburst than from the thought that it meant she would very likely be executed.

俺もそう受け取った。侍女頭が、壬氏が偽楼蘭妃をトラウマになるほど追い詰めてたのに、許しを乞うてたのが印象に残った。
猫猫が口癖みたいに、自分の命なんて貴人に比べたら取るに足らないって言う理由が、今になって分かったわ。

That's also my takeaway. I noticed how the Head Maid begged for forgiveness despite Jinshi PSTD-ing the fake Loulan to f**k.

Amusing how Lakan busting the gates looked more like an explosion. People were making jokes about Lakan sending an army to get Maomao back but it looks like Lakan can be his own one-man army lol.

侍女頭は別として、楼蘭妃がお忍びで出かけてる間に楼蘭妃のふりをしてた替え玉の子やほかの侍女たちは、たぶん理由を知らされてなくて、ただ命令に従ってただけなんだろう。壬氏の怒りはもっともだけど、あの子はかわいそうだ。小蘭より若そうに見えるから、なおさらきつい。自分があの立場だったら、泣き崩れて漏らしてたと思う。
上のコメントにもあったように、あの子は立場の差の犠牲者で、現代の目で見れば無実だけど、この作品の舞台だとつながりがあるってだけで処刑に値してしまう。

Bar the head lady-in-waiting, Renpu and the other ladies-in-waiting who posed as Loulan while Loulan ventured out incognito probably weren't let in-on her reasoning so, for all we know, were just simply following orders. Jinshi's rage is justified but poor Renpu; she seems younger than Xiaolan so it feels horrible. I'd break down and wet myself too if I were in her shoes.
As a comment above me has mentioned, she's a victim to a certain power dynamic and would be innocent through a modern lens but in this story's setting, just by association, she'd be fit for execution.

Didn't think they would do an entire episode without Maomao. But a pissed off Jinshi with a mission is a good tradeoff. He's terrifying if he wants to be.
At least there should be plenty of Maomao next episode.

He was always pretty clever. Remember how he singled Maomao out way back in S1? Just seems better with the people stuff than the science/medicine mysteries.

Same. I wish we had more Jinshi episodes. This really highlighted his own strengths—charisma, social skills, reading people—as opposed to Maomao's focus on knowledge and intelligence. He really chewed the scenery in a sense and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved it.

Especially considering some of them might not even be that deep into the conspiracy but were just doing the jobs they were assigned for, probably by her father.
I wonder how Loulan feels about it.

I wonder how Loulan feels about it.
Loulan is currently an enigma to me. Although she’s shown to have a caring side to her, this whole scheme does not paint her in a positive light.
I cannot tell if she’d feel guilty or just thinks of them as disposable pawns. At the very least, she knew that her ladies-in-waiting would be punished for an act of betrayal like this.

楼蘭妃は「子翠」として虫を捕まえるのを、心から楽しんでたように見えたけどな。猫猫に楽しそうに趣味の話をしてたし、虫の絵入りの詳しい本を書くくらい熱を入れてた。
楼蘭妃が根はいい子だったらいいな。

Loulan did seem to have a whole lot of fun catching bugs as “Shisui”. She was happily talking about her hobby to Maomao, and felt passionate enough about this to write detailed books with illustrations of these bugs.
I’d love it if Loulan is a good girl at heart.

壬氏の本当の性格がにじみ出てきてて最高。宦官のときの壬氏じゃないほうが好きって点では、俺も猫猫と似てるのかもな。
ここ数話で壬氏の人物像がどんどん掘り下げられてるのもいい。猫猫のことは大好きだけど、最近の話で壬氏のキャラにすごく深みが出てきた。
それと、羅の一族いけー！！！ Twitterで羅半の声優をあれだけ推してたから、3期があるかもっていう兆しだと祈ってる

Jinshi's actual personality's leaking out and i'm here for it. I guess I'm similar to maomao in a way that I like jinshi better when he's not his eunuch self.
Also love how he gets more characterization for the last few eps. I love maomao to bits but jinshi's character has had so much depth with the latest episodes

Ka Zuigetsu does not mess around when his woman is in danger. And Jinshi the Eunuch is extremely competent at his job, more than he probably gets credit for.
I really want to see Lahan meet Maomao, the sparks and awkward sibling dynamic/rivalry she would want nothing to do with would be glorious.
