I expected a copypaste of this page but the 0.2 seconds reaction was unexpected, I liked it a lot but I like the manga version better, the manga shows absolute disgust, the anime shows absolute hatred.

Dunno, if it was longer it would be the usual anime staredown. First Use + sudden lack of sound + far->close + eye focus being RIGHT below maomao face on the previous shot was enough to probably get most viewers off guard and get the same reaction as Shinji had.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was, honestly. I don't think I've ever seen a non-horror show put a jumpscare like that.

As for jinshi, it's likely that because of what happened to her mother, she doesn't want to be overly close to others. But even so, maomao still became closer to jinshi.
After all, because jinshi had bought her out for a large sum of money, she was able to avoid becoming an actual prostitute.

あの一瞬の猫猫のカットは恐ろしかった。本当によくできた場面で、ちょっとしたジャンプスケアみたいだった。そのまま次の場面に移って、猫猫と壬氏がその話をそこで打ち切ったのがすごく好き。壬氏もこれ以上踏み込んじゃいけないって分かってたんだな。
それにしても猫猫のあの夢…母親に襲われたなんてかなり悲しいし、羅漢のことも嫌ってるし…感情が薄くて「愛情という感情は母親の腹の中に置いてきた」って言うのも無理ないわ。だって母親とすら呼ばずに「女」って呼んでるんだもん。母親のほうはもう手遅れっぽいけど 🙁
羅漢はまだすごく怪しい。梅梅と碁（？）を打ってるみたいだし、梅梅も楽しそうにしてる。その話をした後で、まだ働き続けるつもりだって言ってたのに。
でも一つ引っかかるのが、羅漢が（壬氏に対して）自分で見せてるような最低な人間で、猫猫があんな顔をするほどなら…梅梅は羅漢に悪い反応をしてないんだよな。本人の前でも、羅漢の話をしてるときも。うーん… 🤔
あと完全にバレたな。羅漢ははっきり「私の娘」って言ってたし、壬氏の正体を知ってることも遠回しに明かしてる。
翠苓がめちゃくちゃ謎めいてる。最後に流れたホラー映画みたいな音楽もラストで緊張感をすごく高めてた。「死者の蘇り」ってのは、OPで誰かが棺（？）から起き上がる場面と関係あるんだろうな

That split second frame of Maomao was horrifying. That was such a well done scene, it was like a mini jumpscare. I love how it just moved on to the next scene and Maomao and Jinshi just ended that part of the conversation right there. Jinshi knew he shouldn’t go further.

Oh man, that dream of Maomao’s… it’s pretty sad that her mother attacked her, and she also doesn’t like Lakan… no wonder she’s apathetic and said that left the emotion called love in her mother’s womb. I mean, she doesn’t even refer to her as her mother, she just calls him a woman. Her mom seems to be too far gone though. 🙁

Lakan, he’s still so suspicious. He and Meimei seem to be playing Go(?) and she seems to be happy with it. Even after talking about it, and how she is planning on continuing to continue working.

Though there is one thing - I would assume that if Lakan was such a terrible person as he has made himself out to be (to Jinshi) and based on how Maomao makes that face…but then Meimei doesn’t seem to have a negative reaction towards him. Not to his face and not when she’s talking about him. Hmm… 🤔

Oh and cat’s really out of the bag. Lakan flat out said “my daughter”, while he’s indirectly revealing he knows who Jinshi really is.

Omg Suiren seems soooo mysterious. Also that horror film music playing at the end really elevated my nerves at the end of the episode. I assume the “rising from the dead” has something to do with the scene in the OP where we actually see someone get up from a coffin(?)

嫌悪と反感に満ちたあの顔が一瞬差し込まれるカット、あの名前が猫猫にとってどれだけ重いものなのかを見事に伝えてたな。
次の数話がすごく楽しみ。猫猫の物語がどういうものになるのかを決定づけるだけじゃなく、この作品の話の運びのうまさを本当に見せてくれる回になる。キャラクターが一番の魅力なのはみんな分かってるけど、この章を読んだからこそ、質の高いアニメ化をすごく見たいと思ったんだよ

Man those pop-up frames with that disgusted face of antipathy did an amazing job at translating the sheer emotional baggage that name carries for Maomao.

I very much look forward to the next couple of episodes. They not only seal the fate of what the story of Maomao will be about, but really helps showcases the strength of the writing regarding the story. We all know the characters remain the predominant source of appeal but reading this arc is what made me really eager to see a good-quality anime adaptation.

Considering the type of man that Lakan appears to be, it could be assumed that he organized the syphilis as well. While he may not have it, someone in his position can probably arrange it.

Not even remotely possible because he greatly desired her mother and after getting her pregnant he'd obviously just want to buy her out and live with her and their child.

And in fact he keeps coming back for her even now that she is this sick and he still wants to buy her out, at least it sounded like that.

Also, as a military officer, even a young one, killing a prostitute wouldn't be such big a deal and evidently he wants to be with Maomao but she hates him.

Syphilis can be transmited from mother to child and if he knew how to organize her mother getting it he definitely would also have known that he'd be risking his unborn child to get it which he obviously would not want.

This is grasping straws tbh.

Yeah, her mom is barely even alive...and tried to kill her as a baby, so...she's probably never felt like she's had a mom even though she's stuck with this (somewhat) living reminder of the nature of her birth and what Lakan did to it.

But all this drama can't get in the way of Maomoa enjoying some herbs! She might've even found a herb buddy in Suirei!

I’d been a little tripper up by this previously, but now I *truly* get what Maomao meant with this:

- She doesn’t know a mother’s love, since she was hated and almost killed by her own mother.
- She has no mother to rely on, because her own mother is basically a vegetable after Syphilis wrecked her body and mind.

This is what bothers me, what is in for Lakan if he manages to get her "back"? He is a smart guy so surely he expects her to despise him in every way possible, but what is he trying to gain with it? A heir? Maybe a political pawn because of how downbad Jinshi is for her?

I know “that girl” is wrong if Im gonna based it on the official manga or LN. It’s either supposed to be “my girl” or “my daughter” but I dont know whats in the original JP anime

Lakan uses the word Musume, which usually means daughter but can also just mean girl.

He doesn't outright say "my daughter", but he puts big emphasis on that word.
So he does say that girl, but sends signals that it's his daughter without admitting to it.

This feels like it might be hard to translate.

it’s only after Jinshi’s confirmation that gives the context for the “correct” translation

Why does Lakan want Maomao? How long has he wanted her back? Seems old lady at that pleasure house has been protecting her. Oh wow, that face of Maomao for only a second. Scares even Jinshi. I do love how clever the characters are.

Oh hey, it's that lady. Hehe, Maomao reactions always fun. Is that a hint at what drives Maomao? Look at that, Maomao, made a new friend, heh. Next episode previews look interesting.

うわ、あの一瞬の猫猫のリアクション、めちゃくちゃよくできてた。リアクションの顔を1〜2コマだけ見せて、ちょっとしたジャンプスケアみたいに効かせる手法なんてアニメじゃほとんど見たことない。文脈を全部踏まえると、ああいう場面にすごく合った演出判断だった

Holy s**t that split second maomao reaction was so f*****g well done. Very rarely seen such a technique used in anime where a reaction face is shown for a frame or two only, almost working like a mini jump scare of sorts. Very fitting directing decision for a scene like that with all the context in mind.

あれは猫猫が今までで一番冷たくて、悪意に満ちた、本気の憎しみがこもった表情だった。ホラーじゃないアニメでまさかのゾッとするジャンプスケア。
この瞬間に向けて、何話もかけてしっかり積み上げてきてたんだよな。猫猫が外廷に連れてこられてから、羅漢が壬氏のところに来るようになったのが静かな始まりだった。壬氏を探って、邪魔をして、挑発して、質問には曖昧に答えて、壬氏と猫猫を寄り道の用事に行かせて、それが今回につながった。猫猫が世話をしてる女の人は母親だとほのめかされてて、碁を打つ妓女で、妊娠してしまった人。これで羅漢が猫猫の父親だってことが、今までははっきり言わずに示されてた。猫猫の母親はある時に猫猫を殺そうとして、後に梅毒にかかった。
そして羅漢は（壬氏の本当の身分をバラすと脅して）壬氏をゆすり、猫猫に会いたいと伝えさせた。その結果がこのジャンプスケア。全部が「語らずに見せろ」の見事なお手本だった

That was the coldest, most spiteful and genuinely hate filled expression that Maomao ever had, a terrifying jump scare that you would expect in a non-horror anime.

There was plenty of buildup leading to this moment over the course of multiple episodes. It began subtly when Lakan started to visit Jinshi once Maomao was brought to the outer palace. He started probing Jinshi, bothering and antagonizing him, responding vaguely to questions before sending Jinshi/Maomao on detour errands leading to this episode. We see Maomao care for a woman who is implied to be her mother, a courtesan who played Go but became pregnant. This implicated Lakan as being Maomao’s father without him stating it directly thus far. Maomao’s mother at one stage tried to kill Maomao and later caught Syphilis.

Lakan then blackmailed Jinshi (under threat of revealing Jinshi’s true status) to tell Maomao he wanted to see her, culminating in this jump scare. All of this was a masterful application of show, don’t tell.

壬氏の本当の身分といえば、今回（予告を見る限り次回も）がこれまでで一番あからさまな明かし方だと思う。壬氏は冕冠（儀式用の冠）と冕服（儀式用の衣装）を身に着けてて、これは諸侯・貴族と皇族しか着ることを許されないもの。
特に目を引くのが、壬氏がかぶってる冕冠の前後それぞれに、玉を12個連ねた旒（りゅう）が12本ずつ下がってること。これは皇帝本人にしか許されない。皇帝より下の者は12旒12玉の冕冠をかぶれないから、たぶん作画側のミスだろうな。皇子は身分を示すものとして9旒9玉の冕冠に限られてる

Speaking of Jinshi's true status, this (and presumably the next episode as well based on the preview) has to be the most explicit reveal of it yet. Jinshi is shown wearing a *mianguan* (ceremonial crown/headwear) and a *mianfu* (ceremonial dress), items which are restricted only to the feudal/noble lords and the imperial clan itself.

Most notably, the front and the back of the *mianguan* he's wearing each have 12 tassels with 12 beads each, which is restricted solely to the Emperor himself. Presumably this is an error on the animators' part, because anyone below the Emperor is not allowed to wear a 12-tasseled, 12-beaded *mianguan*. Imperial princes are restricted to wearing a nine-tasseled, nine-beaded *mianguan* as an indicator of their status.

壬氏は猫猫とこんな形で終わらせたくないけど、他にどうしようもない。で、猫猫のほうは、本当の気持ちが反応ににじみ出てても、できるだけ無表情でいられたことに満足してる。
女と赤ん坊と刃物？ うわ、猫猫に何があったんだ！？
やり手婆は白鈴を売ろうとしてる？ 身請けの話はいくつか来てるみたいだけど、白鈴は譲らないらしい。
で、離れにいるのは誰なのか？ 髪も乱れて、ほとんど意識の無い、かろうじて命をつないでる女…梅毒にかかって妓女として働けなくなり、緑青館の恥になった妓女…猫猫のおやじが手遅れで治療しかできなかった人…そして我らが主人公と気味が悪いほど似た髪の色の人。彼女を起き上がらせるのは、妓女としての得意芸をまだ意識して打ち続けることだけ。見ていて楽なものじゃない。
よし、羅漢は間違いなく猫猫を欲しがってて、周りは羅漢を猫猫から遠ざけるためにできることを全部やってる。
梅梅には身請けしてもらって妓女の暮らしから抜け出したい相手がいるのかな？ 年季明けの歳だし、その人が身請けできるだけのお金を貯めるのを待ってるだけみたいに見える。猫猫のほうは、人を本当に（少なくとも恋愛として）愛する力は母親の腹の中に置いてきたと思ってるけど、少なくともお風呂で慰めてくれる胸の大きいお姉さんたちがいる。
猫猫と壬氏は…まだ気まずいけど、少なくとも水蓮がいいアドバイスをくれた！ 自分の立場をわきまえるのは結構だけど、それで幸せになるチャンスを狭めちゃいけない。
猫猫はあと何回、壬氏は宦官にしては特別すぎるって気づけば、自分でそれを認めるんだ？
なんで羅漢は壬氏のところに来続けるのか？ 全部猫猫のためで、羅漢より先に壬氏が猫猫を身請けしたから。羅漢は猫猫の実の父親だから。で、猫猫を取り戻したい。しかも壬氏の正体を完全に知ってる。
まあ、壬氏が羅漢の名前を出した瞬間に猫猫が壬氏を震え上がらせたのを見れば、猫猫が羅漢をどう思ってるかは十分分かるな。
翠苓は何者なんだ？ 女官なのに軍の詰め所のあたりで働いてて、自分で庭仕事もしてる…あの「死者を蘇らせる」話はわりと本気だったの？ どうも何かがおかしい

Jinshi doesn't want to leave things with Maomao like this, but he doesn't have much of a choice. And Maomao for her part is just content she was able to be as emotionless as possible, even if her true feelings still feel paramount in her reaction.

A woman, a baby, and a knife? Jeez, what happened to Maomao!?

Is grams trying to sell Pairin? Seems like she has some offers but Pairin's not budging.

So who is in the annex? A disheveled, practically comatose, woman barley hanging on with her life...a courtesan who brought shame to the Verdigis House when she caught syphilis and could no longer function as a courtesan...someone Maomao's father was too late to do anything more than treat...and one who shares a hair color eerily similar to our leading lady. The only thing that makes her get up is to still consciously play her specialty as a courtesan. It's not a pretty sight.

Okay, so Lakan DEFINITELY wants Maomao and they're doing everything they can to keep him away from her.

Does Meimei have a suitor she's interested in having buy her and free her from life as a courtesan? It seems like she's just waiting for him to get enough to buy her, especially as she's at retirement age. Maomao for her part thinks she lost the capacity to truly love someone (at least romantically) from the womb, but at least she's got her busty big sis' to comfort her in the bath.

Things are...still awkward between Maomao and Jinshi, but at least Suiren gave her some good advice! It's all well and good to be mindful of ones' station but you shouldn't let it limit your chance to be happy.

How many times is Maomao going to realize Jinshi is too special to be an eunuch before she admits it to herself?

Why does Lakan keep visiting Jinshi? It's all been about Maomao, and Jinshi buying her before Lakan could. Because HE'S MAOMAO'S BIOLOGICAL FATHER. And he wants her back. And he knows EXACTLY who Jinshi is.

Well, I think Maomao putting the fear of God into Jinshi the moment he mentions Lakan's name should tell you all you need to know about how Maomao feels about him.

What is Suirei's deal? She works around the military barracks, despite being a court lady, and she does some gardening herself...was she somewhat serious about that "reviving the dead" thing? Something seems really off about her.

問題は、猫猫が貴族になるより身分の低い庶民のほうが自由があるって分かってることだと思う。庶民なら、なりたいものになれる自由がある。つまり薬師で、マッドサイエンティスト。貴族の令嬢だったら、いつものふるまいは絶対に許されない。羅漢が猫猫を娘として見るのを嫌って、壬氏の好意を無視するのは、たぶんそれが本当の理由なんだろうな。二人とも、猫猫がなりたくない誰かになってほしがってる。それに猫猫はすごく頑固で、気に入らない事実を無視するのがすごく上手い。それが一番の欠点だと思うけど、キャラクターとして面白いのもそこなんだよな

I think the problem is that Maomao knows that she has more freedom as a low-born commoner than she would have as an aristocrat. Because she has as a commoner the freedom to be what she wants to be : an apothecary and a mad scientist. No way she could get away with her usual behaviour if she was a lady of the aristocracy. That might be the real reason she hates Lakan for seeing her as his daughter and will ignore Jinshi’s advances : they want her to be someone she doesn’t want to be. And she is also very stubborn and very good at ignoring facts she doesn’t like. I would call that her main flaw, but this is also what makes her interesting as a character.

1巻でも、我らが猫猫は芽生えかけの正義感を持った少女として描かれてたんだよな。その正義感こそが、世渡りのうまさや頭の良さとぶつかってた。それが猫猫を魅力的なキャラにしてると思う。壬氏が有能な官吏であろうとしながら、恋愛では必死に流れに逆らってるのと似てる

The vol.1 did describe our Maomao as a young girl with a budding sense of justice. It was that very sense of justice that went against her street-smartness and intelligent. It made her a compelling character imo similar to how Jinshi desperately went against the current romantically while at the same time try to be a effective and competent bureucrat.

*本当の*おやじと優しい姐さんたちが猫猫を大事にしてくれて本当によかった。いつか壬氏が猫猫にずっと続く笑顔をもたらしてくれるといいな。水蓮も、身分の違いでチャンスを逃しちゃいけないって猫猫に言って、それをほのめかしてたっぽいし。でも壬氏、このバカ、追いかけるべきだったろ！

Goddammit! I kind of already knew from last week’s hints, but I genuinely hoped to be proved wrong. Jinshi, please keep that despicable man as far away from Maomao as you can. I don’t want that weirdo to get his hands on her.

And to make matters worse, Lakan *does* know about Jinshi’s actual lineage.

No Maomao, you’re breaking my heart… I feel so bad for her. She got a mother who turned a knife on her and ultimately became close to a vegetable, and her father is a lunatic who only sees her as some trophy.

I’m so glad that her *real* dad and loving sisters do treat Maomao with care. It will hopefully be Jinshi who’ll bring her a lasting smile. Suiren also seemed to hint at this by telling Maomao that she shouldn’t let opportunities slide because of differences in status. But Jinshi, you stupid, you should have gone after her!

Was watching it at 4am, that split second face got me good. The pure hatred in the eyes gave me chills

ちょっと声の演技と演出の話をさせてくれ。悠木碧が*圧巻*すぎる。それに一瞬だけ映った、文字どおり殺意むき出しの猫猫はヤバかったし、完璧に効いてた。マジかよ

Can we talk about the voice acting and direction for a minute? Aoi Yuuki is absolutely *crushing it*. And that split second we saw of Maomao looking literally murderous was insane and wholly effective. Holy s**t.

I don’t understand… Maomao would rather be a courtesan than go with Laken? Doesn’t seem that logical. Seems like her biological father was trying to buy her and is paying rent for her and her mother.

猫猫が手首の包帯の下に隠してる傷の意味を考え直しちゃうな。今まで飲んできた毒の副作用だと思ってたけど、母親が妊娠中に梅毒にかかってたなら、猫猫も病気の初期段階で、あの傷は実は梅毒の潰瘍って可能性もある

Kinda makes me rethink the meaning behind the sores we see MaoMao hide under the bandages around her wrists. I was assuming them to be a side effect of all the poison she had been ingesting, but if her mother contracted syphilis during pregnancy, it could also be that MaoMao is in the early stages of the disease and the sores are actually syphillis ulcers.

That split second frame was well made. You rarely see her loose her composure like we saw at the end.

梅梅がもう少し残ってるのは、あの変人が猫猫や母親に会えないように盾になるためなんじゃないかな

I think Meimei is staying a little longer so that she can still serve as a shield to stop that weirdo to see Maomao and her mother.

羅漢が猫猫を指して使ってる言葉は「娘」で、「若い女の子」とも訳せるけど、普通は「自分の娘」の意味で使われる。
だから羅漢が言ってるのは「猫猫を私に返すのを断られたら、あなたが高貴な方だと分かっている以上、私には何もできない。でも私の娘の意思はどうでしょうね？」ってこと。
羅漢に正体を知られてること自体で壬氏が脅されてるとは思わない。知ってる人が増えるほど壬氏の立場がややこしくなるってだけ

The word he uses to refer to Maomao is "musume," which can be translated as "girl" but is more commonly used as "daughter." 

So Lakan is saying, "If you say no to returning Maomao to me, I can't do anything because I know you're nobility. But what about my daughter's wishes?" 

I don't think Jinshi is threatened by Lakan knowing that he has a secret identity. It's just that the more people know the more complicated Jinshi's situation is.

Oh my god OH MY GOD IS SUIREI TRYING TO PROTECT MAOMAO? That's the vibe I get, but I'm not sure.

この作品、先週の土曜に見始めたばっかりなんだ。去年の秋に予告を見たとき実はすごく興味があったから、ちょっと恥ずかしいんだけど。週末で追いついたら最高に楽しくて、猫猫と壬氏、それにほかのみんなのドタバタがすっかり好きになった。これからは毎週のペースで見て、議論にも参加するのが楽しみ。あのゲスな変態の羅漢には鳥肌が立つ。報いを受けてほしい

I only started watching this show last saturday, something I'm a bit ashamed of since when I saw the trailer for the show last autumn I was actually very interested. Catching up over the weekend has been a thrill and I've really come to enjoy the antics of Maomao, Jinshi and the rest of the cast. Looking forward to watching the rest of the season in a regular pace now and partaking in the discussion going forward. That rat bastard creep Lakan makes my skin crawl, hope he gets his comeuppance.

細かいことだけど、ママ猫にしがみついてる小さい梅梅のスクショ。危うく見逃すとこだった笑 でも*今は*病に伏せってるあの妓女と梅梅は、ずっと昔から仲が良かったみたいだな

A small detail, but here's a screencap of [little Meimei](https://imgur.com/r6sEXOx) clinging unto MAMAcat. I almost didn't see her there lol. But seems like the *now* sickly-courtesan and her were close since way back.

翠苓との最後の場面の音楽が、何気ない会話とすごく面白い対比になってた。色んな語り方の技法が使われてて、今回が一番好きな回になったわ！

The music in the lasts scene with Suirei was such an interesting juxtaposition to the casual conversation they were having. The different techniques for storytelling made this my fav epi!

今見た。羅漢の正体バレはちょっと引っ張りすぎで、もうみんな簡単に予想できてた。猫猫は羅漢を嫌ってるだろうとは思ってたけど、あの目の憎しみは本物で、場面としてもすごくよくできてた。ジャンプスケアっぽいけど音楽が無かったからその意味では効いてない。でも言いたいことはちゃんと伝わった。
後悔もなく殺されそうなのに、なんで羅漢はあんなに猫猫に会いたがるのかよく分からない。
あと猫猫は壬氏の身分についてわざと鈍いふりをしてるっぽい…あれだけ頭がいいのを考えると実はかなりイライラする。絶対分かってるはずの答えの周りをウロウロさせるのはバカっぽい

Just watched this. Lakan reveal was a bit drawn out, was easily guessed by everyone by now. Figured Maomao would dislike him but that hate in those eyes was real, and that scene was very well done. Kinda like a jump scare but since there was no music not effective in that regard but it got the point across.

Not sure what his deal is about seeing her so much when it looks like she would kill him with no regrets.

Also seems Maomao is being deliberately dense in regards to Jinshi rank...which is actually really annoying considering how smart she is, having her dance around the answer she must know its dumb.

If Jinshi even brings it up as a possibility to her Maomao might actually snap before she can stop herself and do something drastic. Thankfully Jinshi is not quite stupid enough to do that. He got the message loud and clear in this episode.

羅漢は壬氏が自分の娘を雇ってるのを知ってるのは明らか。でも分からないのが：
1. なんで今になって急に娘を取り戻したいの？
2. 前回は結局何の話だったの？
3. なんで壬氏は変装したかったの？
4. なんであの店に行ったの？
5. そもそもなんで猫猫を連れて行ったの？！

I am not able to follow what has been happening with Lakan & Jinshi...

So, clearly, Lakan knows that Jinshi has employeed his daughter. But I am not sure about:
1. Why does he want her back all of a sudden now?
2. What was about the last episode all about?
3. Why did Jinshi want to disguise himself?
4. Why did he go to that shop?
5. And why did he take MoaMoa with him anyway?!

今回は正直見てるのがつらかった。すごく暗くて胸が痛い回だった

This episode was genuinely hard to watch. It was so grim and heartbreaking.

すげえ。どんどん面白くなっていく。あの静かなジャンプスケアのリアクション、父親（と母親？）の判明、猫猫の不老不死の薬への情熱、そして謎の翠苓。最後のBGMはシオンタウンみたいだった！

Holy s**t. This is getting better and better. That quiet jumpscare reaction, the father (and mother?) reaveal, Maomao's passion for immortality medicine and mysterious Suiren. That soundtrack at the end sounded like Lavender Town!

I feel that it isn't dislike, but more mistrust at the moment, unsure of Maomao's intentions being at the outer court.

I'm anime only and haven't looked up anything about Siirei. I'm curious what her relationship if any is to Lakan. She is somehow involved with the military. Maybe another apothecary, or doctor for the wounded, or maybe some assistant or secretary working for the military?

壬氏が見た猫猫のリアクションって、回の最初で「うまく隠せた」って言ってたときのやつなのか、それとも回の最後のやつなのか気になる。リアルタイムで起きたのか、壬氏が猫猫の顔を思い出したのか。それとも今回で2回やったの？

I wonder if maomao's reaction that jinshi saw was in the beginning of the episode when she said "she hid it well" or in the end of the episode. Like did it happen in real time or did jinshi remember her face. Or did she do it twice now?

猫猫の顔、進撃の巨人のエレンっぽい雰囲気だった。ああいう顔は思いつく限り進撃が一番うまかったと思うけど、あっちですらかなり滑稽だったからな

MaoMao face gave me Attack on Titan Eren vibes. I feel like AoT did that type of face the best of any anime I can remember, but even there it was very silly

梅梅に何か起きるんじゃないかって嫌な予感がしてた。
キャラが「引退まで（年季明けまで）あと少し」とか「もう少し働けばいい」とか言ったら、それは死亡フラグだからな

I had a bad feeling like something was going to happen to Meimei.

Anytime a character says they only have a little bit more until their retirement, or release, or they only need to work a bit longer, it's a death flag.

話を聞く限り、羅漢は猫猫と母親を両方身請けしようとしたけど、やり手婆に阻まれたんだと思う。
でも起きたことを考えれば理解できる

From the sounds of it I think lakan did try to buy bother her and her mother but got blocked by Mao Mao grandma.
But considering what happened it understandable

翠苓って水蓮（壬氏の世話係）と羅門の娘なんじゃないかって思った人いない？ 水蓮は裕福な家の出っぽいのに、羅門はごく普通の貧乏人。水蓮が身分と逃したチャンスについて話してた様子とか。
一方で翠苓は猫猫と同じでプロの薬師。薬草園の世話をしてた。まるで師匠か父親に敬意を表してるみたいに。それに朝顔が愛の象徴っていうのも、両親の愛への敬意かもしれない。ただ一つ問題なのは、死を治す薬が、羅門が宦官にされたことや後宮を追い出されたことと関係ありそうにないってこと

Anyone else thought of Suirei being daughter of Suiren (Jinshi's caretaker) and Luomen. Suiren looks like from a wealthy family while Luomen is just your average and poor guy. The way Suiren quoted about status and missed opportunities.

Meanwhile Suirei is a professional apothecary just like Maomao. She was taking care of the medicinal garden. Almost as if paying tribute to her teacher or father? Also morning glories being the symbol of love could be a tribute to the love between her parents. The only problem is that medicine to cure death doesn't seem to be related to Luomen being made a eunuch or kicked out of the palace.

待って混乱してきた、猫猫の母親って生きてるの？？ 亡くなってると思ってた

Wait I am confused, so Maomao’s mother is alive?? I thought she was deceased?

Considering the state that she appears to be in, can you really call that "alive"? If that is her, that is. Which it heavily implies that it is.
