もうひとつ質問が集まったのが、猫猫がさらわれて後宮に売られる仕組みです。さらった側がそのまま宮中に売れるのはなぜか、という疑問に、事情を説明する返信がいくつも付きました。4chan では宮中の作法や時代考証の甘さを指摘する声が出ましたが、その書き込みも「でも猫猫がかわいいから許す」で結ばれています。

薬草を摘みに出た猫猫は人さらいに遭い、後宮へ下女として売られます。年季が明けるまで目立たずに過ごそうと、字が読めないふりをしていましたが、上級妃の赤ん坊たちが病に伏せっていると知り、玉葉妃と梨花妃のもとへ同じ警告をこっそり残します。玉葉妃の娘は助かり、その書き手を壬氏が探し当てたことで、猫猫は玉葉妃の侍女に取り立てられました。

It's not shoujo. Most of the characters are female and there are coomer designs aplenty. Shoujo is filled with hot dudes, not the other way around. Only exception is shows for prepubescent girls and this is not one.

それにしてもすごい始まり方だったな。猫猫は野山で薬草を摘んでただけなのに、いきなりそのへんの連中にさらわれて、後宮に下女として売られちゃう。おやじさんが一人で大丈夫だといいけど。
とはいえ下女も悪い仕事じゃない。2年働けば出ていけるし、ちゃんと給金ももらえる。ただ、さらった連中がその給金の一部を取るみたいだから、猫猫は字が読めないふりをして給金の安い仕事を選んでるんだな。
猫猫は上級妃たちの謎の病を助けるためにこっそり紙を残して、うまくやったつもりだったんだろうけど、彼女を見つけ出す切れ者の宦官がいたってわけだ。腕を買われて、下女から侍女になることに。目立たずにやり過ごす計画はこれでおじゃんだな（笑）
登場人物を紹介する第1話として最高だった！もう猫猫とその騒動っぷりが大好きだ。しかも声が悠木碧だから、主人公の演技は間違いなく一級品だろう。次の週まで第2話を待たなくていいのが本当にありがたい！次いってみよう！

What a start to the episode though. Maomao was just minding her own business [picking herbs in the wild](https://i.imgur.com/NZTWiyu.jpg) and suddenly [gets kidnapped by a bunch of randos](https://i.imgur.com/5CCcfqE.jpg) only to get sold [to the rear palace to serve as a serving girl.](https://i.imgur.com/daJz9H0.jpg) Hopefully, her father is fine on his own though.
Being a serving girl isn't that bad of a gig though. She just needs [to work for two years and she'll be free to go](https://i.imgur.com/zefpvxP.png) plus, she's actually getting paid for her work. Although it sounds like the kidnappers are getting a part of her pay which is why she pretends to be illiterate and decides to take a lower paying job.

So much for her plans of laying low. xD
What a great first episode to establish our characters! I am already in love with Maomao and her shenanigans. And with Aoi Yuuki voicing her, we can only expect a top-tier performance for our lead character. Thank goodness I don't have to wait for next week for episode 2! On to the next episode!

いい作品だとは聞いてたけど、ここまでとは思わなかった。OPが終わるずっと前に完全に心をつかまれてた。『薬屋のひとりごと』は今期の覇権アニメと余裕で張り合えると思う。
猫猫いいね。頭が切れるから行動は計算ずくに見えるけど、たとえ自分が面倒に巻き込まれても人助けは見過ごさない。その点で悠木碧が猫猫を演じてくれてよかった。ぴったりの配役に見える。この先もきっとすごい演技を見せてくれるはず。
この作品に3話一挙放送が必要だったかと言われると、たぶん要らなかったと思う。この第1話だけでも十分やっていけた。とはいえ一挙放送のおかげで入りやすくなったのは間違いない。推測だけど、『フリーレン』の放送とぶつかるのを（多少は）避けたかったってのもありそう
I was informed that this series was good, but I didn't expect this. It had already fully grabbed my attention well before the OP had finished. I can see \*The Apothecary Diaries\* easily going head-to-head with season's best anime.
I like Maomao. She's got a good head on her and is therefore seemingly calculating in her actions, but wouldn't pass up on helping others - even if it makes trouble for herself. I'm glad in this regard that Aoi Yuuki got to play Maomao as she appears perfect for the role. I'm sure she'll continue killing it from here on out.
Do I think this series needed a three-episode batch release? No, it probably would have been perfectly fine - based on this first episode. This batch release will undoubtedly help people get in the series nonetheless. If I were to guess, there's also a good chance that they (partially) wanted to avoid competition with *Frieren*'s release.

Phenomenal adaption! I've been waiting for this series and it didn't let down. Everything was on point if not better than I could have imagined. The interactions of the characters are fun. I hope everyone that's new to the series enjoys it as much as I am.
正直、このアニメ化はなぜか自分にはハマらない珍しいケースなんだよな。漫画はすごく好きだし、作画にもアニメーションにも音楽にも不満はないのに。まあみんなは楽しんでるみたいだから、そこはよかった
Honestly this adaptation is one of the weird cases where I don't vibe with it and don't know why, I enjoy the manga a lot and I have no complaints about art,animation and music. Luckily it looks like people are enjoying the anime so I'm glad in that aspect.
自分も気に入ってる演出は多いんだけど、同じように、このアニメ化には完全には満足できないって感じてる。絵は本当に綺麗なんだけど、色使いか画風のせいか、漫画を読んでて感じるシリアスさやドラマ性を引き出しきれてない気がする。
白黒だと、セリフや表情、キャラたちの何重もの駆け引きがすごく際立ってた。政治や細かいニュアンスが多い話だから、もう置いていかれてる人が出てきてる。見た目がきれいな異世界ものとか少女漫画っぽいから、表面だけで判断されないか心配だ……
I'm enjoying a lot of choices they made but I'm also of a similar thought that the adaption just doesn't make me perfectly content. I think the art is absolutely beautiful but something about the color palette/style just doesn't fully tap into the serious potential/drama that I get reading the manga.
In black and white, just felt like it really emphasized the dialogue, facial expressions, and the multi facet scheming of the characters. I'm already seeing people being lost when this has a lot of politics and nuance, and I'm worried people look at the surface of it looking so much like a pretty Isekai/shoujo...

I agree, it feels like a cheap adaptation of a generic shoujo. I'm not not enjoying, but it fell flat for me.

Selling yourself / your child to servitude is legal. The palace buys girls to serve there for X amount of time. Some unscrupulous people "acquire" girls and tell the palace that everything is legit about the transaction.

Yeah, basically they pretend to be her parents/guardians selling their child into legal slavery, and it's not like anyone's going to listen to the child complaining about it. From the kidnapper's perspective it's more of a scam.

Although I am not a source-material reader, I was really looking forward to this, and its first episode turned out to be even better than I expected.
I felt like Maomao has somehow the same energy as Biwa (from Heike monogatari) and it's not surprising since they both have Aoi Yuuki as their VA.

漫画の二つ目の版とまったく同じで、猫猫がかわいく描かれすぎてるのがまだ悲しい。本気で嫌ってるわけじゃない（猫猫至上主義だから）けど、萌えっぽくなりすぎてないラノベの元の絵柄のほうが断然好きなんだよな。それに、この先つじつまが合わなくなるところが出てくるかもしれない。
せめて腕の傷はちゃんとグロくてよかった。かなり控えめにされるんじゃないかって心配してたから
I'm still sad that they made Mao that cute exactly like the second edition of the manga. Not that I truly dislike it (because Mao supremacy all the way) but I really prefer the original artstyle of the LN in which she doesn't look that overly "moe". Plus, that might create some coherence issues in the future.
At least, the wounds on her forearm are disgusting, I was affraid they were going to downplay it a lot.

A beautiful Opening Sequence (Maomao dancing and lip licking!), plenty of beautiful (and busty) women, Aoi Yuki voicing the lead, a handsome long-haired man, great animation/direction, Imperial China palace intrigue, and a serene Ending...what more could one ask for?

Yeah I understand that grabbing random people to be slaves was a thing in many societies but I thought it involved at least attempting to hide what you're doing. Like going to the next region over to sell them there. Not literally just kidnapping random girls and selling them to the local authority who kind of... already owned them anyway?
What does this added element of banditry provide that the local nobles would see them as a legitimate service instead of criminal, and even more strange pay them proportional royalties instead of a lump sum? It's like a wacky combination of anarchy and bureaucracy. I'm genuinely curious if this is based on any historical practice.

いやー、序盤の話を完全に忘れてたから、アニメはほとんど新鮮な気持ちで観られそうだｗ でも今のところアニメ化の出来には満足してる、かなりいい感じ。自分は漫画版しか読んでないんだけど、あれは最高で、ラノベの漫画化の中でもトップクラスだと思う。たぶん原作ともそんなに違わないんじゃないかな
Man, I completely forgot the beginning of the series, so watching the anime will be all new to me for the most part lmao But I'm satisfied with the quality of the adaptation so far, seems pretty good. I only have read the manga adaptation, which is great and one of the best manga adaptations of LN out there, but I imagine its not too different from the original.

前から評判がいいのは聞いてたから、どうなるか結構気になってたんだけど、1話は最高だった。キャラは楽しいし、音楽も作画も声優の演技もギャグもいい。
猫猫ほんと面白いキャラで、もう好きになった。頭はいいし、そばかすは可愛いし、性格がとにかく楽しい。声が悠木碧ってのもあって、今期のキャラランキングで上位確定。猫バージョンの猫猫がめっちゃ笑えるｗ
猫猫は年季が明けるまでの2年間、目立たずにやり過ごすつもりだったのに、赤ん坊たちが病気になってる件に首を突っ込んだせいで、後宮のほぼ頂点にいる壬氏と玉葉妃に目を付けられちゃった。
薬の知識で玉葉妃の娘の命を救って、それがきっかけで玉葉妃の侍女に。見つかりたくなかった猫猫を、壬氏がうまいこと見つけ出したおかげでね。この二人の関係がすごくいい、ここからどうなるか楽しみでしょうがない。
あと背景と音楽もほんとに良かったって言っておきたい。

Her apothecary knowledge saved the life of [Gyoukuyou's daughter](https://i.imgur.com/fyC8czp.png) and thanks to that [Maomao became Gyoukuyou's lady-in-waiting](https://i.imgur.com/lR0x1cc.png). 色づかいもキャラの表情もすごく鮮やかだし、舞台設定も新鮮。これは楽しめそうな予感がする。
Can't help but imagine how confused the other servant girls must've been lol. The bigshot eunich calls you and your colleagues in, shows you a paper you can't read, then tells you to leave.
Both the colors and the characters' expressions are so vibrant in this, and the setting is pretty refreshing too. Got a good feeling I'll enjoy this.
最初の2話はテンポがほんとに悪かったけど、3話と4話でガラッと良くなる。後のほうのエピソードがアニメ化されるのが楽しみ、謎解きの本当の巧さが出てくるのはそこからだから
pacing was really bad for the first 2 episodes but it drastically improves for ep 3 and 4. Looking forward to some of the later chapters being adapted because thats where the real ingenuity of the mysteries comes to life

I was expecting it to have a heavier tone like most shows set in ancient times, but this one feels more light hearted and I'm all for it. That opening and ending song don't deserve to slap this hard either, can't wait to watch the next episode

Granted I'm already it's LN fan but the animation is wow, haven't watch much Chinese settings in anime though but I can tell this is one of the top notch quality. They didn't skimp on the budget
いいスタートだったけど、ちょっと駆け足に感じたな。人さらいに遭うっていうつらい経験をした主人公がどう感じたか、もう少し時間を取ってもよかったと思う。「そうそう、さらわれたんだよね。おやじ元気かな？」ってなったとき、どこか見逃したかと思ったわ。
It was a nice debut, but I have to say, I felt this episode was a little bit rushed. The show could have used more time to process how the character, having gone through a traumatic experience as being kidnapped, felt like. I thought I missed a part of the episode when she went, "yeah, I was kidnapped, wonder how dad is doing?".
猫猫は、さらわれたくらいでトラウマになるようなキャラじゃないよ。描くような部分がそもそも無かったんだって
Maomao isn't the kind of character to get a trauma from being kidnapped. There was no such part to display.
