I don't think "plot armor" matters in a mystery series. That concept only makes sense in action/fighting series where protags just win every fight unreasonably

Jinshi being a gary stu is not a take I've seen before. Good for him that somebody recognizes his talents because most of his personality is being insecure about his position and thinking he's not good enough because he's a jack of all trades, master of none.

MaoMao is more polite but she does have several girlboss moments. As much as she likes to larp as a serving girl, everyone important is aware and acknowledges that she is technically a member of a prestigious clan and the daughter of its head. So she always gets away with everything much like how everyone lets House' antics slides.

I started this series last night and watched 20 episodes so far. I haven’t been this interested in a show in a while since Too Many Losing Heroines and Frieren. Maomao is too cute.

There are so many instances in this season where the bgm takes away from the scenes instead of adding to them. It's so disappointing because s1 had such a great ost and insert songs.

It's obvious they didn't put as much effort into S2. Even the author complained that the pre-production period for S2 was short so she had to be more involved with the meetings.

ちなみにこれ、誤訳だよ。「氷菓」という漢字は、1字目が「氷」、2字目が「菓子」で、普通は「ひょうか」と読む（そう、京アニの作品と同じ）。意味は「アイスクリーム」で、日本語ではただ「アイス」と呼ぶこともある。ここではルビでちょっと遊んでるだけ。
あと、スマホが「ice」を「IXE」に変換し始めたら、Creeper World の動画を見すぎって証拠だな。

It’s a mistranslation, by the way. The kanji 氷菓 — first one “ice”, second “confectionery” — are normally pronounced “hyouka” (yes, like the KyoAni show) and mean “ice cream”. Which is sometimes also called just “ice” in Japanese. Just a little playing with furigana here.
Also, you know you’ve been watching too many Creeper World videos when your phone autocorrects “ice” to “IXE”.

今回は2分くらいに感じた。思わず「やばい、小蘭だ」ってなったよ。
あの侍女たちを後宮の端っこまで追い払ってくれたらいいのに。最初からずっと、かわいそうな里樹妃にひどいことばかりしてる。だいぶ前のお茶会で、あの子に当てつけみたいな格好をさせたときからずっとだ。
壬氏が「猫猫」って呼んだとき、驚いた顔になった人いない？巻き戻して見直しちゃったよ……

This episode was like 2 minutes long. I was so like "OH NO, ITS XIAOLAN"
I so wish they would wipe those ladies in waiting out to the far end of the palace. They have been terrible to poor Lishu the entire series. Going to back even when they dressed her as an insult at that tea party forever ago.
Anyone else kinda do the shock face when he said "Mao Mao"? I had to rewind...

Gyokuyou got new ones from her home town. Even if Lishu doesn't have potential ones, whoever Jinshi assigns would probably be better than those bullies. Btw isn't Xiaolan looking for a job?

わざとやった人がいるんじゃないかな。猫猫もその場に居合わせて成り行きを見てるし。もしかしたら猫猫が小蘭を守るために壬氏に頼みごとをして、そのせいで猫猫が壬氏の秘密を守る側になる、なんて流れかも。

Wonder if the person did it on purpose, Maomao is there as well to see the events unfold. Or maybe Maomao could ask Jinshi for a favour to protect Xiaolan which leads Maomao to her protecting Jinshi's secret.

あの子が簪を持ってることと関係があるのかな。それなりの立場の誰かが、あの子に目をかけたってことだし。

I wonder if it's connected to the fact that she has a hairpin which implies someone of good position basically picked her out.

あの簪は誰からもらったんだろう。銀の花にピンクの石みたいだから上級妃ではなさそう（梨花妃が猫猫に贈った簪みたいなローズクォーツではないだろうし）。だから中級妃の誰かがあの子に目をかけたんだと思う。上級妃はだいたい金の簪を使うから。下級妃のことはよく分からないけど、かなり低い身分の人ではなさそう。

I wonder who that hairpin is from. its not one of the high ranking consorts as it looks like silver flowers and a pink stone (unlikely to be rose quartz like Lihuas hairpin gifted to maomao) so its likely one of the mid-ranked consorts who picked her out. the high ranking consorts usually use gold as their hairpins. Unsure about the lower ranked concubines but it likely isnt someone who is on the lower end of status.

Well Maomao is in on good terms with 3 of the 4 high consorts. As long it isn't for the new one she could probably just ask the consort directly to forgive her.

Nah, I think it's more innocent than that. At least in regards to Maomao. She's just too enthusiastic about bugs to the point it's directly compared to Maomao's passion for poisons.
So I really want to think they have bonded through overlapping geekery, which is separate to whatever other reasons Insect Girl could have for playing incognito.
Which may just be to blow off steam. I highly doubt chasing bugs through the woods is "appropriate" behavior for a lady of good standing, and I can't see how drawing pictures of grasshoppers could be part of any greater scheme.

あまりに突然で、あの涙があまりにあふれてて、もうきつかった。小蘭の顔に楽しそうな笑顔が浮かんでないと、世界がおかしくなったみたいに感じる。

The fact that it was so sudden and those tears so overwhelming just hit way too hard. Anything but a pleasant smile plastered on Xiaolan's face makes it seem like the world is out of sorts.

この作品で純粋なシナモンロールの2人が泣いた。世界は不公平だ

The only 2 pure Cinamonn Roll of this shows cried, The world is unfair

里樹妃のクズ侍女の一人がついに身の程をわきまえさせられるのを見られて、本当にスカッとした。しかもよりによって壬氏がやるとはね。
回の最後で小蘭が厄介ごとに巻き込まれたのは、ほんとひどい引きだったよ。

Man did it feel good to finally see one of Lishu's trash attendants put in her place, by Jinshi of all people no less.
Xiaolan getting in trouble at the end of the episode was just such a f****d cliffhanger.

壬氏の役目が何なのか、あの人たちは甘く見てるところがあるよね……壬氏は侍女のためじゃなく妃本人のためにいるんだから、侍女が妃を操り人形みたいに扱うのを、そう簡単に見過ごすわけがない。

It is something they underestimate what Jinshi's role is... he isn't there for the ladies in waiting but the Concubines themselves so trying to let them basically use her as a puppet is something Jinshi couldn't let by so easily.

それに、壬氏が女性みんなに愛想よく親しげなのは、そのほうが仕事がやりやすくて相手の警戒を解けるからだよ。必要とあらば毒を吐くことだって十分できる。

Also he's pleasant and affable to all the women because it makes his job easier and lets their guard down, he's more than capable of bringing out the venom when necessary.

それに立場と顔のおかげで、意地悪な女子たちのやり口がほとんど効かないんだよね。集団全体じゃなくて一人に狙いを絞れば、残りはかつての女王様じゃなくて壬氏の側につく

He’s also immune to a lot of the mean girls behavior because of his position and looks. As long as he singles out a target and not the whole group, the rest will side with him over their former queen bee

猫猫は最初からそれを見抜いてたんだよね。あの子が壬氏に嫌悪の目を向けてた大きな理由の一つがそれ。
猫猫は、壬氏が自分を操ろうとしてる偽物だって分かってて、話に乗るつもりは無かった……
でもそれが裏目に出て、壬氏に抵抗する猫猫は、壬氏にとってたまらなく魅力的な存在になった >.>

Which is something Maomao figured out from the very beginning, and was one of the main reasons why she gave him those disgusted looks.
She knew he was a faker trying to manipulate her, and was not going to play along...
Which then backfired, as Maomao resisting Jinshi made her irresistible to him >.>

そうそう、氷の件はすごく大きな問題かもしれない。何百年か前には、氷を運んでくるのに何週間から何か月もかかるのが普通だったんだから。氷は金や宝石と同じで贅沢品の象徴だった。

Ya, the problem with the ice might be a massive issue considering it typically took them weeks to months transporting ice back a few hundred years ago. Ice was a sign of luxury, just like gold and gems.

冷蔵の技術がどれだけ最近のものかは覚えておいたほうがいいね。氷室ならもっと歴史があるけど、それでもね。

The banter seriously gets better every episode, Maomao’s expression when Gyokuyo and Jinshi were fighting over her (again) was so funny I had to watch that part twice 😂

今回の壬氏と玉葉妃の応酬を聞いてて、やっと気づいた。日本語だと二人が使ってる言葉はすごく似てて、「貸す」は「かす」、「返す」は「かえす」なんだよ。この「完全に大人な」お二人、わざと聞き間違えたふりをしてるのかな？

It only just occurred to me listening to this round of Jinshi vs. Gyokuyou that the words they’re using sound very similar in Japanese — lend is “kasu” and return is “kaesu”. Are these two Totally Mature Adults pretending to mishear each other?

そりゃもう、間違いなくそう。壬氏が二人お決まりの「猫猫の取り合い」ゲームを始めたとき、玉葉妃の顔がパッと明るくなってたもん。

Oh absolutely. You could see Gyoukuyou brighten up when Jinshi started the "Maomao shuffle" game they like to play.

猫猫の取り合いは、だんだん遊びじゃなくなって真剣な響きになってきてる。壬氏が向き合ってるものはかなり深刻みたいだし、一方で玉葉妃は妊娠中で格好の標的になる。だから冗談の合間にも、この「猫猫は誰のもの？」って話はもっと真剣な問題になっていくと思う。

The fights over maomao are slowly getting less playful and sounding more serious. Whatever Jinshi is facing seems pretty serious but Guakuyo is pregnant and that makes her a prime target so between joke and joke I think this "Who does Maomao belong to" thing is going to become a more serious question.

壬氏がついに猫猫を「薬屋」じゃなくて名前で呼んで、唇に触れて好意を堂々と示した。一方、猫猫はずっと考え込んではカエルのせいにしてるｗ
壬氏も猫猫と同じくらい怖くなれるんだね。1期で猫猫があの侍女とやり合った場面みたいに（平手打ちは無しだけど）

Jinshi finally calling Maomao by her name instead of Kusuriya and openly showing his affection by touching her lips. Meanwhile Maomao keeps on thinking and blaming the frog lol.
Jinshi can be just as scary as Maomao, similar to that scene in S1 with Maomao and that lady-in-waiting (minus no slap though)

どうやら「カエル」と牛黄の一件で、壬氏はもう遊んでる場合じゃないと悟ったみたいだね。だから全力で口説いて、猫猫への気持ちをできるだけはっきり示すことにしたんだ。玉葉妃でもそれには勝てない！
壬氏が本気を出したときの毒っぷりを見て、猫猫が前より壬氏に惹かれてたりしてね。少なくとも、確実に何か感じてたはず。

It seems like the "frog" and ox bezoar incident has convinced Jinshi he can't play around anymore so he's just going to flirt as hard as he possibly can and make his interest in her as clear as possible. Not even Gyokuyou can beat that!
Imagine Maomao being more attracted to Jinshi after seeing the venom he can unleash when he puts his mind to it. She definitely felt it, at the very least.

Maomao was certainly impressed, which for her is peak emotion.

あの場面を何度も見返したけど、壬氏が人前で猫猫の唇をなぞったなんて、いまだに信じられない。どうしても頭が追いつかない。もう隠そうともしてないじゃん。

I replayed that scene so many times and I'm still in denial that Jinshi is the one that rubbed her lips, IN PUBLIC. I simply cannot process this. He is not even being subtle anymore.
