名前の読みを統一すべきだよ。日本語読みの名前（羅漢、玉葉、馬閃）と中国語読みの名前（猫猫、里樹、梨花）が混ざってる。なんで英訳でこれを直そうとしないのか分からん

There needs to be a unification of the names, since some names are in Japanese pronunciations (Lakan, Gyokuyou, Basen) and other names are the Chinese pronunciations (Maomao, Lishu, Lihua). I don't know why the English translations don't try to fix this issue.

Chinese words aren't even that bad once you understand the basics. It's just a bunch of root words smashed together based on sound and what the intention is

猫猫が化粧で壬氏をいじるところ、最高だった！高順も水蓮も止めようとしなかったのが好き。二人とも若様が化粧したらどうなるか気になってたんだろうな。猫猫が仕上げたあと、全員同じ反応してるし（笑）
壬氏の変身後に猫猫がこっそり逃げられると思ってたのが笑える。そりゃ壬華にもお供は要るし、水蓮は猫猫に使う化粧道具をちゃんと用意してたわけで。
立場がすっかり逆転してる。もっとも、下っ端の従者に化けたいなら壬氏はまだまだ勉強が足りないみたいだけど。あと、猫猫と壬氏の二人きりじゃなくてよかった。馬閃が距離を取って護衛してるし。
壬華に鶏の串焼きを渡すときの猫猫の笑顔、本当に綺麗。食べてるところもめちゃくちゃ可愛かった♡
猫猫がおやじにご馳走したがってるのは微笑ましかったけど、羅門が育ての親だったとは思わなかった。血がつながってると思ってた。しかも宦官らしい。いやー、変装して一日出かけるだけの気楽な回だと思ってたのに。
で、来た。壬氏がいつ羅漢の問いを持ち出すのかと思ってた。妓女は純潔を失えば価値が半分になり、妊娠すれば無になる。うわ…嫌な予感しかしない。来週のサブタイトルが「羅漢」だから、次回はとんでもない事実が明かされそう。

このシリーズの美術、マジで良すぎる。
最後の、妓女の価値を下げる方法を話してるカット。画面の大半を地面が占めるように構図を取って暗闇で埋めつつ、話の中心の二人の頭を画面の外に切ってる。こんなの、たいていのアニメは思いつきもしないだろ。
背景がぼやけていくのも、壬氏の意識がその会話だけに向いてるのを強調してるし、妓女が妊娠する話をした瞬間に軽いBGMがぴたっと止まる。
間違いなく歴代最高クラスの作品

The art direction in this series is *so f*****g good*.

That shot at the end where they're discussing how to lower a courtesan's value, and it's framed so the ground takes up most of the shot to fill it with darkness while cutting off the heads of the characters central to the interaction isn't something most anime would even think to do.
Even the way the backgrounds become blurred to emphasise how Jinshi's attention is solely on that conversation, and the light background music completely stops at the point she talks about the courtsean getting pregnant.

Definitely a GOAT series.

猫猫、壬氏の変装をめちゃくちゃ楽しんでたな。女の姿の壬氏を見られる唯一のチャンスだったし、実際かなりイケてた。女装して出歩いたら、トロイのヘレネーでも敵わないだろ（笑）散々遊んだツケが猫猫に回ってきたのも笑える。結局、あの子も特別なメイクアップを受ける羽目に。
むくれた壬氏があんなに可愛いとは思わなかった。ちょっとした変装でのお出かけを楽しんでる。でも、このお出かけにはちゃんと目的があったわけだ。妓女が「価値を失う」理由の真相はかなりエグい。何を意味してるかって話な。あの片眼鏡の気持ち悪いおっさん、もしほのめかされてる通りのことをやったんなら、窓から落ちるか何かしてほしい

Maomao was having the time of her life disguising Jinshi. This was her one chance to see what he looked like as a girl and man, he looked pretty hot. Helen of Troy ain’t got s**t on our guy if he went out disguised as a woman lol. Pretty funny how all that messing about caught up to Maomao. In the end, the poor girl got her own special makeover too.

I never thought a pouty Jinshi could be so adorable. He’s enjoying his time out in his little disguise. But I see his little trip out had a purpose. The truth of how a courtesan “loses value” is pretty messed up. The implications I mean. That monocle wearing creep really needs to fall out a window or something if he did what they’re implying.

猫猫はいつも壬氏以外のことにばかり気を取られてるのに、壬氏は彼女との時間にあれだけ入れ込んでて、ちょっと気の毒になる。でも、猫猫のことや、彼女がどうして今みたいになったのかは前より分かってきてるみたい。話を聞く限り、生い立ちは明るいものじゃなさそうだけど

It's up to Maomao to avoid a world war and prove her makeup chops on Jinshi lol.

I almost feel bad for Jinshi how much he wants to invest in his time with Maomao even though she's always focused on anything but him, though he is coming to better understand her and how she ended up the way she did. Even if her backstory isn't pretty, from the sounds of it.

庶民メイク講座の時間だ！壬氏は生まれつき美しすぎるから、わざわざ手間をかけて、ぽっちゃりで小太り、声はかすれてて「身分の低さ」に見合った匂いのする男に仕立てないといけない。猫猫、高順、水蓮のフルメンバーでやっと完成。
猫猫はついに壬氏の割れた腹筋を目にする…それに剣を握ってできた手のタコも…宦官ならいかにもありそうなことだよな？猫猫はこういうとぼけた疑問を心の中でつぶやかずにいられない。
女っぽく見える壬氏には複雑な気持ちになる…
高順、ナイスアシスト！壬氏にはお供が要るし、猫猫ほどの適任はいない。ちょうど休みだし。しかも彼女を着飾らせる口実にもなる。で、壬氏、いや壬華は、彼女の従者役をノリノリで演じてる！
あと馬閃は文句を言いつつ二人を尾けてる。少なくとも鶏の串焼きにはありつけた。

高順と水蓮が壬氏のことを話してるのは、子どもの機嫌を取るのにずっと苦労してきた両親みたい。壬氏も手のかかる子だし。ただ、今の「玩具」はこれまでのものとは全然違う。
壬氏がわざわざこんな手間をかけたのは女の人に会うためだと猫猫は思って、ちょっと引いてる（それなら花街に行けば済むのに）…壬氏の本当の目的はそこじゃないんだけど。
壬氏はついに猫猫のおやじのことと、彼女がおやじをどれだけ誇りに思ってるかを知る。それに、おやじが本当は誰なのかも察したみたい…そして壬氏はついに妓女の価値を下げる方法を猫猫に尋ね、猫猫はたぶん今までで一番真剣な顔になる。美貌と魅力と芸で値打ちのある上位の妓女は、床を共にする相手じゃない。でも純潔を失えば…子を宿せば…価値はなくなる。そしてこれは猫猫にとって、どこか個人的な話っぽい。

I guess it is a compliment if Maomao thinks that Jinshi with his beauty enhanced by makeup would be enough to incite a war...but Jinshi doesn't want to look more beautiful, he wants to transform into a commoner! And Maomao loves a challenge.

Time for the full commoner makeup tutorial! Jinshi is so naturally beautiful they need to go out of their way to make him into a pudgy, chubby, guy with a hoarse voice and a smell to match his "lower station!" I takes a full team of Maomao, Gaoshun, and Suiren to complete.

Maomao finally sees Jinshi's six-pack...and his callused hands from wielding swords...totally stuff you would expect to see from an eunuch right? Maomao can't help but ask these silly questions to herself.

I have so many mixed feelings about Jinshi looking like a woman...then again, he has his moms' genes!

Gaoshun, way to wingman! Jinshi needs a companion and who better than Maomao, especially when she has time off? It even gives them an excuse to dress her up all fancy. And Jinshi, or should we say Jinka, loves playing the part of her attendant!

Oh, and Basen is shadowing them despite his complaints. At least he got some chicken skewers out of it.

Sorry Jinka, Maomao prefers thinking of her dad than trying to strike up conversations with you, but at least she's willing to enjoy chicken skewers with you and give you that winning, Maomao, smile!

Gaoshun and Suiren talking about Jinshi like two parents who have always struggled to keep their kid happy and pacified, and Jinshi doesn't make it easy. Though his current "toy" is very different from all the rest.

Maomao seems a little put off that she thinks Jinshi went to all this trouble just to visit some ladies (especially when it would've been easier just to go to the pleasure district)...not that it is what Jinshi was actually out for.

Jinshi finally finds out about Maomao's dad and how proud she is of him, though he also seems to put two and two together of who her dad really is (especially considering they're connected in a way knowing Jinshi's possible backstory)...but Jinshi also finally asks Maomao about how to lower the value of a courtesan, and Maomao gets probably the most serious she's ever been. Because a high-ranked courtesan valued for her beauty, charms, and skills isn't meant to be bedded, but if she loses that purity...if she ends up with child...she becomes worthless. And this seems kind of personal for Maomao.

羅漢が実は悪人じゃなくて、ただ駆け引きを楽しんでるだけって可能性を誰も考えないのが不思議だ。あいつは壬氏に謎かけを投げつけて、突っ込んだ質問には答えない。なのにみんな、言葉どおりに受け取ってる。もし羅漢が妓女の価値を下げるために無理やり手を出したんだとしたら、手を出そうと「考えた」だけって話は嘘になるよな？それが嘘なら、他のことも全部嘘の可能性が高いし、あいつが外道だと信じる理由もない。気持ち悪いしゃべり方以外はな。
この作品の脚本はここまで素晴らしくて、視聴者をバカ扱いしたことは一度もない。羅漢がただのいかにもな悪役で終わると決めつけるのは、作者に失礼だと思う。絶対にひねりがある。
自分の考えでは、羅漢と妓女は結ばれたけど、それは合意の上だった。別のコメントで、昔の中国では望まない子を堕ろすのに怪しい薬（水銀とか）を使ってたって話があった。妓女は妊娠して、危険な薬で堕ろそうとして、それで今の状態になったのかもしれない。羅漢の言う「価値を下げた」はそれでも事実だけど、事故で、あいつは自分を責めてるとか。
完全に外れてる可能性もある。ただ羅漢には面白いキャラであってほしいんだよ。話を進めるためだけの薄っぺらい悪役じゃなくてさ。そんな安っぽい扱いにしては、あいつとあいつの行動にスポットが当たりすぎてる

It's crazy that no one considers the possibility that Lakan isn't actually evil and is just playing games. He goes in tossing around riddles to Jinshi, not answering follow-up questions, and people take him at his word. If Lakan actually did force himself on the courtesan to devalue her, then wouldn't his comment on how he only "considered" forcing himself on her be a lie? If that's a lie, then he is most likely lying about everything else and there is no reason to believe that he is a monster. Other than his unsavory way of speaking.

This show's writing up until now has been fantastic and hasn't treated the audience like idiots thus far. It feels insulting to the author to just believe that Lakan is a classical, mustache-twirling villain and nothing more. There will definitely be a twist.

I believe that Lakan and the courtesan did get together, but that it was consensual. Another comment mentioned they used questionable drugs (such as mercury) to abort unwanted children in imperial China. The courtesan may have gotten pregnant, taken a risky drug to abort, and that is the reason she is in her current state. Lakan's comment about devaluing her would still be true, but as an accident where he blames himself.

I could definitely be completely wrong. I just want Lakan to be an interesting character and not some one dimensional evil to further the plot. There has been too much focus on him and his actions for something that cheap.

I totally agree with you, this series has enough tact that a heavy handed "evil" character should have many layers that we haven't been shown yet, so the first obvious evil thing you assume is probably a red herring.

This. Lakan feels so much like an unreliable narrator. He seems so intent on acting like a villain, *especially* to Jinshi’s face, it’s sooo suspicious. Like why does he keep on talking about it like “Oooh, you know what I did??? You know what terrible things I did?? Hmm I did something else too, why don’t you find that out too??”

And yeah, he mentions that he “considered forcing himself on her”. Which means if we were to believe him - he didn’t follow through with it. Then if he really got her pregnant “to reduce her value” then it couldn’t be non-consensual, right? Maybe an accident? Or like you pointed out, something gone wrong after the pregnancy.

I also mentioned in my replies: I would assume that if being pregnant is such a huge deal and career ending in this sort of business, then there would surely be countermeasures against it, right?

Just one thing I wanted to add on this topic.... it's something that's been bothering me and have been meaning to leave a comment about cuz back in episode 15 the Netflix subtitle for this delivery is different. It was translated as, *"I wanted to have her one day"* instead of *"force myself on her"*

Considering both translations may have the same unsettling implications as to whatever Lakan did; the former is more ambiguous in meaning while the latter is just straight up ominous. And since I don't understand Japanese at all (or maybe there might be anyone here who could clarify??), it does make me wonder which of the two phrases is more reliable in translation.

I'm definitely jumping on the LN and manga once the anime ends to get different angles on things.

Really chill SoL-ish kind of episode. Really well done tone shift when jinshi hit maomao with his question. Also was really surprised when maomao basically said that she needs her father to stay alive longer so she can learn more from him. It’s not a bad thing I guess but isn’t that also a really cold thing to say about your dad? It’s obvious she does love her father but still.

So Lakan is either the biological dad, or the f****r that arranged something to happen to Maomao's mom. Either way, f****r should be castrated with a rusty knife.

壬氏と猫猫の掛け合い、高順と水蓮まで加わってて最高だった。この4人のやり取りがほんとに噛み合ってる。猫猫と壬氏が中心の楽しい回だった。
でもラスト。猫猫のおやじが育ての親だったって話だけでも衝撃なのに、終わり方はさらに冷え込んだ。純潔が答えで、すごく納得がいく。でもまさか、彼女が妊娠って口にした瞬間。猫猫の場合、母親がその手の届かない妓女だったんじゃないかって嫌な予感がする。うわ、次回何が起きるのか怖い。でも羅漢のことをめちゃくちゃ憎むことになるって確信はある

Man I loved the banter between Jinshi and Maomao know that Gaoshun and Suiren have joined on the fun as well. These 4 flow off each other so well. Fun episode focusing on Maomao and Jinshi.

But the ending. The topic of Maomao's adoptive father is one thing. But the ending went even colder. Purity was the answer and it makes so much sense. But dear god the moment she said pregnancy. I got a bad feeling that is the case of Maomao it was her mother who was this untouchable courtesan. Oh god I am scared what is going to happen next episode, but I do have a belief that I am going to have an insane hatred for Lakan.

Love people also being confused by Maomao's actions. Poor ol' lady, gonna have a heart attack over this. Maomao just staring like that is lol. Again, nothing perverted about her intent though. That smile. I love Maomao. Also love all of them just going with it. Ooof, spicy drink. Poor vocal cords. Putting those in the mouth must be really annoying though. Hehe, proud Maomao.

Did you think you were free, Maomao? No, enjoy your ooting with Jinshi. And now you get to be disguised too. I think they are doing this as revenge for Jinshi, lol. Maomao always perdy. So Jinshi/Jinka is the servant in this play? How silly. Hehe pouting Jinshi is fun. Yummy skewers! Look at that smile. Poor guard, not getting a skewer.

Oh my, you two, talking about toys. But it feels like you're not talking about a toy. Good for you guard, getting some skewers. Maomao such a good daughter. Maomao's dad so smort. Poor father dude though. Jinshi starting to perhaps put pieces together himself? Oh, that question. Jinshi should really explain why he wants to know that stuff first. Man, learning about courtesan life is...it doesn't feel great from my perspective.

最高の回だった。猫猫が壬氏に化粧をして、一緒に街へ出かける。
壬氏はイケメンすぎて、口に紅を差しただけで、戦争が起きかねないほどの美女に見えちゃう。紅を差した壬氏への猫猫たちの反応がめちゃくちゃ笑えた（笑）
壬氏は本当に見た目に恵まれてるけど、猫猫も素人じゃない。街にうまく溶け込めるくらい見た目を落とす、見事な仕事ぶりだった。
水蓮にもらった服を着た猫猫は、すごく可愛くて綺麗だった。特に串焼きを食べてるところ。
全体的にすごく楽しい回だった。ただラストだけは別で、壬氏が猫猫に妓女の価値を下げる方法を尋ねて、彼女がそのやり方を明かしたところで、空気が静かで暗いものに変わった。
次回は羅漢が中心みたいだから、ついにあいつの過去が見られそう。来週はかなり重い回になる覚悟をしておかないと

That was a great episode as usual, but damn, I loved the framing of that final shot.

というわけで、猫猫は父親が実の父じゃないと認めて、羅漢はこれまでの回で妓女の価値を下げる話をしつこく持ち出して、それを知ってる「誰か」に聞いてみろと言ってた…
つまり羅漢は猫猫を見た瞬間に誰だか分かったんだよ。自分の説はこう。羅漢は緑青館の妓女（猫猫の実の母親）を妊娠させた。で、羅門がたぶんお産を手伝って
1：母親はお産で亡くなって、羅門に娘を託した
2：妓女としての価値がなくなって緑青館を出ざるを得なくなったけど、羅門か妓楼の婆さんに娘を頼んだ
どっちもありえるし、緑青館の妓女たちや婆さんが猫猫をあんなに可愛がってる理由も説明がつく。
で、問題は羅漢が「なぜ」今になってそんな話を壬氏にしてたのか…
とにかく、猫猫は妓女の価値を下げる方法なんて質問に機嫌を悪くしてた。あの顔が全てを物語ってる…壬氏が誰に会いに行くのかは分からないけど、それに関係してる気がする。いやー、濃い締めくくりだった

So yeah, Maomao confirming that her father is not her biological father, Lakan saying in previous episodes all those things about lowering the value of a courtesan and being insistent with it, asking *someone* that knows about this...

Yeah, Lakan after seeing Maomao, he immediately knew who she was, and my theory is, he got pregnant a courtesan of the Verdigris house (Maomao´s biological mother), then Luomen maybe helped in giving birth and

1: she died while giving birth and she told Luomen to take her of her

2: she had to leave the Verdigris house because she had none of value as a courtesan, but told Luomen/the granny at the brother to take care of her

Those 2 options are viable and that explains why the courtesans and the granny at the Verdigris house are that fond of Maomao.

Maomao clinically examining Jinshi's body was far more amusing than I imagined in the light novel. Apparently, she needed to get an extremely close look at those abs.
Maomao probably: *"Wow, you could wash laundry on these."* \- Proceeds to invent a washboard hundreds of years early.

On today's episode of My Dress-Up Jinshi...

羅漢は、いつか彼女に無理やり手を出してみたかった、みたいなことを言ってたよな。ってことは、猫猫の母親を妊娠させたのはあいつじゃないってことになる。
身請けするために誰か別の人間に手を出させるっていうのも変な話だし、そもそも結局身請けしてないしな

Lakan talked about how he says that he wanted to try and force himself onto her one day, or something similar so that kinda implies he didn't impregnate Maomao's mom.

It would be odd for him to get someone else to do the deed just so he could buy her, which he didn't do in the end anyways.

I feel like they’re making it wayyy too obvious that Lakan is her dad and he’s gonna be evil. For a series that tries to have a mystery element that isn’t just outright told to you, they’re making this one too obvious. Kinda sussy.

もう一つ謎なのは、妓楼なら妊娠を防ぐ手立てがあるんじゃないかってこと。昔の避妊がどうなってたかはよく知らないし、ましてや中国っぽい架空の国だとどうなのか分からないけど、妊娠が「価値を失う」ことを意味するなら、よりによって妓楼ならそういう対策はあると思うんだよね

One other thing that’s puzzling is wouldn’t the brothel have ways of preventing pregnancies?? I mean, I’m not very familiar with stuff like birth control in the old times and especially not sure about how it would be in *not*China, but I’d assume that a brothel of all places would have countermeasures for that sort of thing, especially if being pregnant means “losing your value”.

Maomao has incredible talent. Apothecary, detective, cook, and now cosmetics expert too. I am annoyed that Lakan is probably her bio father. But it also kind of explains maomao's intelligence since both her father and mother sound like they're very smart people and she was adopted by a very talented apothecary too. Can't wait for the remaining eps

Of everything she did to him, I think having cotton balls in my mouth for hours would've been the hardest, followed by the spicy drink damaging the throat.

この回を見て、羅漢が主人公に興味を持ってる理由は二通りだって結論に達した。
1）あいつは猫猫の母親を知っていた。母親は妓楼で働いていて、羅漢は彼女の純潔を奪って価値を落とした。彼女に執着していて、自分の手が届く相手にしたかった。で、猫猫がかつて知ってた女に似てるから、今度は猫猫に執着してる。
2）上と同じ。ただし純潔を失っただけじゃなく妊娠もしていて、猫猫は羅漢の子。あいつは話をつなぎ合わせて、猫猫が自分の娘だと気づいた

After watching this episode I've come to the conclusion that there are two outcomes to Lakan being interested in MC.

1) He knew her mother, her mother was working at the brothel and Lakan caused her to be devalued by taking her virginity, he was obsessed with her and wanted to be able to afford to be with her, so now hes obsessed with maomao because she looks like the woman he used to know and is now obsessed with her.

1) Same as above, but instead of just losing her virginity she also fell pregnant and maomao is Lakans kid, hes put two and two together and figured out she is his.

Even if it was a pressing issue for him, asking how to lower the value of a courtesan was a disgusting question to ask. Especially doing it right near the pleasure district. If anything, he should've asked it back at the palace, and preface it with like "I don't mean it, this is based on rumours, etc"

That may be one way to reduce their value, but it doesn't feel like Lakan's style, too imprecise. He'd only get one chance, without guarantee that there would be a pregnancy. I feel like he would be more likely to poison or assault the courtesan to ruin her looks and/or skills. But maybe that's just me hoping that he doesn't turn out to be her bio father.

I have a question. When Maomao was telling Jinshi that she wants to take care of her father more, why did Jinshi say that he thought she didn't care about anyone but herself? Even though the resason that they met was because Maomao helped them understand the reason of that consort's baby illness. She is not heartless, but just doesn't want to get into dangerous situations. So, then why would he say that?

All the hints about Jinshi's true identity are all over the place for Maomao to see up close yet she still chose not to connect the dots for her own good.

ここのコメントの大半はもっと無知で、そっちのほうがよっぽど気味が悪い。まず、「猫猫は明らかな手がかりや推測を無視してる」ってみんな言うけど、ほとんど全員が当たり前のことを見落としてる。これまで出てきた登場人物のほぼ全員が同じ振る舞いをしてるってことだ。ここでゆるく描かれてる時代では、好奇心は美徳じゃなかったからな。人にはそれぞれ定められた身の上があって、知るべきことだけを知り、それ以上知りたがることすら考えられなかった。農民だろうと帝の妃だろうと。そこから外れてるのは羅門（ある程度）と羅漢と猫猫だけ。
もう一つ。羅漢がここ何話も壬氏にほのめかしてきたことは、あいつが罰や報いを受ける理由にはならない。壬氏はあの男を不快に思ってるかもしれないけど、庶民一人の人生のために、たとえそれが今お気に入りの侍女の母親だったとしても、他の貴族と揉めようなんて絶対に考えない。そんなのありえない話だ

Majority of the comments here are even more ignorant. I find that far more disturbing. For one, with all of the "Maomao ignores obvious clues and assumptions" practically everyone misses the obvious—that almost all of the characters shown in the story so far exhibit the same behaviour. Because in the times losely depicted here being curious was not a virtue. One had their lot in life and knew only what they were supposed to know, with even wanting to know more being unthinkable. Be they a peasant or emperor's concubine. And only Luomen (to an extent), Lakan and Maomao stand apart from this.

The other thing is, what Lakan was implying to Jinshi for the past however many episodes won't be a reason for any sort of punishment or reprecussions toward him. Jinshi may find the guy unpleasant, but he also would never ever think to get into any kind of conflict with another noble over a life of a commoner, even if she was a mother of his presently-favorite servant girl. That is just ridiculous.

The class roles being really ingrained is something that certainly at least Jinshi doesn't seem to really "get". For example, it doesn't seem to register at all that he's essentially taking over/monopolizing her day off, which she might not be a fan of. Maomao for her part easily could have decided not to answer his "distasteful question", finding it offensive, but she still does.

Calling it now since there’s verbal confirmation that her father is her adoptive father that perhaps Lakan is her biological father given the implication of the question Lakan asked Jinshi which Jinshi went ahead to ask Maomao and her reaction, and her seemingly knowing that Jinshi was talking about Lakan a few episodes back.

羅漢が過去に実際何をしたのか分かる前から、しっかり憎ませにきてる。このクズに何かいいところはあるのか？頭の良さもずる賢さも、いやらしくて卑劣にしか見えない。
一方で猫猫は、強くて賢いキャラで本当に見てて楽しい。言葉と行動から本当に賢いと分かる主人公なんて、なかなかいない。話の都合で「主人公は賢い」って周りに言わせておいて、本人はバカなことばっかりしてる作品は嫌いなんだよ

They’re doing a good job of making me hate Lakan even before we find out what he actually did in the past. Are there any redeeming features at all to this scumbag? Even his intelligence and cunning comes across as sleazy and despicable.

OTOH Maomao is such a strong and intelligent character it is such a delight. It’s so rare to find an actual protag that’s actually smart from their words and conduct in a show. I hate it when characters in a show tell you the protag is smart for story reasons even when they do stupid things.

Yeah this episode is doing some very blatant foreshadowing. MaoMao's dad being her adopted dad and being a eunuch. Her connection with the brothel and the higher rank courtesan's all dotting on her (despite the madam being hard on her). Even if she isn't related to the creepy dude, she is probably the result of a courtesan at that brothel getting pregnant.
