名前に「小（シャオ）」を付けるのは親しみを込めた呼び方で、「ちっちゃい猫」「猫ちゃん」みたいな感じ。目上の高順に「猫猫様」って呼ばれるのを猫猫が嫌がったから、高順はそう呼んでるんだ。陰で猫猫の話をするときも「小猫」って呼んでたんだろうから、それが周りにも定着したんだろうな

Adding Xiao (meaning "small, little") to a name is a form of endearment like "Little Mao", "Mao-chan", etc. He calls her that because Maomao didn't want him to call her "Maomao-sama" because he is above her. When talking about her behind the scenes, "Xiaomao" was probably how he brought her up in conversation and that's how the name stuck to other people.

猫猫をやる気にさせて積極的に関わらせるには、毒が絡んでると教えて、自分で毒を味見させてやると約束するのが一番だって、高順は分かってるのがいい。かたや壬氏は、2分も猫猫の気を引いていられない。
フグで昏睡した商人の事件！どうやって毒にあたったのか？料理人はきっちり手順を守ってたみたいだし、本人の大好物だったのに？
馬閃って奴はかなり有能でちゃんとしてるけど、猫猫にはけっこう冷たい。なんでだろうな？
もちろん猫猫は、自分で毒を食べて謎解きを実演してみせる羽目に。で、毒消しを試す前に、壬氏は猫猫が持ってた吐き薬で吐かせることになる。今後は、できる限り壬氏の前で毒は食べないだろうな。
解決はわりと定番。弟が家業を手に入れるために兄を消そうとした…ただ、誰かがその考えを吹き込んだっぽいけど。
なあ壬氏、猫猫が明るく「おかえりなさいませ」って言ったとき考えてたのは、お前がくれた虫の死骸のことだぞ…よかったな！にしても、気の毒にあまりに打ちのめされて、会心の一撃から立ち直るのに壁に頭を打ちつけ続けてたな。
よし、羅漢は間違いなく猫猫に興味がある…で、猫猫のほうもあいつを知ってるみたいだ。家庭の事情が変わった変人の軍師って壬氏の説明に反応してたし、本人は考えないようにしてたけど。
一方で羅漢は、緑青館で気に入ってた妓女の話をする…頭が良くて、冷たく射抜くような目つきで、男にはそっけないのに男を惹きつけてやまない。どこかで聞いたような？髪の色まで同じだ。羅漢は彼女に執心するあまり、身請けするためにわざわざ彼女の値打ちを下げた…妓女の値打ちを下げる方法なんて、限られてるよな。それを踏まえて、羅漢は自分の件でも猫猫を借りたいと言ってきた

This Lakan guy is definitely interested in Maomao, especially knowing she's with Jinshi.

I love how Gaoshun knows the best way to get Maomao interested and actively involved in something is knowing poison is involved and promising her she can taste poison herself. Meanwhile Jinshi can barely hold her attention for two minutes.

The case of the merchant put into a coma by pufferfish! How did he get poisoned? Especially when the cooks seem like they did everything by the book and it was his favorite meal?

This Basen guy seems pretty on the ball and professional, but also fairly cold to Maomao. Kind of wonder why?

Of course Maomao had to demonstrate the solution to the case by actually ingesting the poison herself. Then Jinshi has to use her anemic agent to make her puke it out before she can test it's detoxifying afterwards. Last time she tries to eat poison in front of Jinshi if she can help it.

Pretty standard resolution. Younger sibling tries to off their older sibling to get the family business for themselves...though it seems like someone else put the idea in his head.

Well, Jinshi, she was thinking of the dead insects you gave her when she said "Welcome Home" in a cheery mode so...great! Though poor guy was so overhwelmed he had to continually bang his head on a wall to recover from that critical hit.

Okay, Lakan DEFINITELY is interested in Maomao...and it seems like she's aware of him if Jinshi's description as a weirdo military strategist with a unique family situation made her react, though she tries to stop thinking about it.

Meanwhile Lakan tells a certain story about a courtesan he was fond of at the Verdigris House...one who was intelligent and had a cold, piercing, stare that drew men in even as she was cold and distant towards them. Sound familiar? She even had the same hair color. But Lakan was so focused on her that he went to the trouble of reducing her worth so he could purchase her...and there's a certain way to reduce the a courtesan's value. And with that in mind, he also wants Maomao for a case of his own.

I'm liking what Lakan is shaping up to be. I've had high hopes for him ever since I saw him wearing a monocle. There's something about cunning antagonists with monocles that I love. Now the question is if he can dethrone my favorite monocle wearing bastard, I'll have to wait and see.

最後の3人のシーン。最初はテレビの調子が悪いのかと思ったら、作画の細かさだった。半透明の壁越しに、雨粒の影をキャラに落としてたんだ。すごく巧い

That final scene between the three of them. I thought my TV was playing up at first but it was actually the incredible detail of the animation. They had cast the shadows of the rain drops onto the characters through the translucent walls. Very clever detail.

istg this guy has a vendetta against the palace. Initially, I thought he was Basen, which made me wary of him accompanying Maomao. But it can't be him cuz they have different eye-colors.

あと「壬氏.exeは動作を停止しました」の項目もボードに足そうｗ 気の毒に、かなりの重傷で、立ち直るのに頭を何発か打ちつけないといけなかった。
で…この不気味な片眼鏡の男って、俺たちが思ってるあの人で、話してるのも俺たちが思ってるあの人のこと…？うわぁ。「物好きは多い」って、高順も壬氏も身に覚えあるよな？それにしてもこの片眼鏡の男は本当に気味が悪い。気をつけろよ！

Damn at this point Gaoshun could have more of a shot with Xiaomao than Jinshi ever could hahaha. I know it will not happen but gosh, my man seems to know better than his Master the ways into her weird beautiful soul (cmon Jinshi sama, is just about poison and misteries, is not that hard!) OMG Just look at her face when startled by Jinshi! LOL Is he... wet?

Oh, hellouu Basen, who is not impressed by our catcat. That will change, I presume? He seems interesting.

Aaaand she cheerfully poisoned herself again! Haha "Gaoshun!!!" "Hai!! _grabs her still so they can force the remedy into her mouth_ haha. We should keep a whiteboard counting "days without a Maomao self-poisoned event" Bet Basen is impressed already.

Oh, and we should add a "Jinshi.exe stopped worrking event" to the board lol. Poor guy he is down hard, he even needs some hits on the head to get back in track.

So... This creepy monocle guy is who we think he is, and is talking about who we think he is talking...? Oh my. _Many with curious tastes_ yeah, both Gao and Jin know about that, mmmright? But this monocle man is REALLY creppy, better watch out!

羅漢が壬氏を探ってるのは、壬氏が自分の娘とかなり近いからで、典型的な父親っぽさが出てる。壬氏が羅漢のことを話したときの反応と、忘れたいって言ってたのを見るに、猫猫は羅漢が自分の父親だって知ってると思う。でも、値段を下げるために羅漢が猫猫の母親を妊娠させたんだとしたら、それはまずいよな。とはいえ羅漢のあの狡猾な雰囲気からすると、そういう真相でも驚かない

Lakan investigates jinshi because jinshi is quite close to his daughter giving off typical dad vibes. I am sure with Maomao knew lakan is her father because of her reaction when jishi was describing lakan and she says that she wants to forget about it. But it won't be good if lakan impregnated maomao's mom to bring down her price. But given how cunning vibes lakan gives off, I won't be shocked with this revelation.

猫猫の反応はいつも最高だな。この毒マニアが大好きｗ 声優の悠木碧が、ああいう細かい声や台詞回しで完全に役をものにしてる。
壬氏が猫猫の出迎え方に戸惑うのも無理はない。会うなり嫌そうな顔をするときもあれば、満面の笑みで温かく迎えるときもあるんだからｗ
今日も猫猫が謎を一つ解決。もう宮廷専属の探偵として雇えばいいのに。まあ被害者の弟は演技が怪しすぎて、犯人なのはバレバレだったけど。
羅漢は間違いなく猫猫に興味があって、別の謎解きに猫猫の力を借りたいと壬氏に頼んできた。嫌な雰囲気を出してて、壬氏とのシーンはかなり暗い空気だったけど、羅漢が昔気に入ってた妓女の話をしてるときに、壬氏と高順が猫猫のことを思い浮かべてたおかげで少し和んだｗ

なんで壬氏が試験を受けさせたがったのか、本気で分からない。下働きのほうが自由に動き回れて、一番いい仕事をするのに。正式な女官にする理由なんて、書記みたいな仕事をさせて自分の仕事を減らすくらいしか…ああ、そういうことか

I genuinely don't understand why Jinshi wanted her to take it, since she does her best work when she's a servant able to move more freely around. Really the only reason to have her become a proper court lady is so that she can take on some secretarial duties and lighten his worklo... oh I see why he wanted her to take it.

f'n hell. I was not expecting monocle to come across as such a creep. The implications so far are disturbing, but of course it is hard to tell how much is lies. But he was definitely projecting creep at us.

一つ引っかかったこと。高順はちゃんとフグの事件を調べたけど、多くの人はろくに調べずに適当に誰かのせいにしてた、って猫猫が言ってたよな。
あれが猫猫個人の意見で、なんちゃって中国、というかモデルになった国でよくあることじゃなきゃいいんだけど

One thing that bugged me- Maomao notes that Gao actually worked hard to learn about the pufferfish incident, whereas many people just didn't do the work and randomly blamed someone instead.

I really hope this is a personal opinion and not something that happens a lot in Not China- or the country it was based on.

あの弟、部屋に入ってきた時点で、何かしらやましいことがあるって自分から言ってるようなもんだった。動機もよくある話で、身内の嫉妬なんて今の社会でも見かけるしな。
羅漢は今のところ一番敵役に近い存在って感じ。猫猫と似たところがあるけど、年齢的に猫猫本人のはずがない。となると猫猫の母親なんじゃないかって強く匂わせてる。その人が今どうしてるのか気になる。羅漢が腹いせに何かしたんじゃないかって嫌な予感がするし、当たってたら相当な外道だ。壬氏がこの先どう対処するのか気になる

As soon as that younger brother walked in he was pratically making it known he was guilty in some fashion. Honestly his motive is pretty common jealousy in the family is something you see even in todays modern society.

Lakim feels like the closest thing we have to antagonist in some fashion. Having traits similar to Maomao, but there is no way it can be Maomao given her age. It highly implies that maybe this was Maomao's mother. This makes me curious where she is now. I get a bad feeling Lakim did something in spite and if my hunch is right he is one sicko. Curious how Jinshi handles this going forward.

I wonder about toxicity of seaweed since I didn't even know before that eating seaweed can kill you. So I research a bit and find out that a variety of seaweed called sarcassum, better known in Japan as hijiki, contains potentially dangerous amount of arsenic.

Hijiki is such a popular ingredient that has been used for millennia I'm not sure it is the same or similar one in this episode.

That courtesan Lakan was talking about has to be Maomao's mom, with the same green hair and cold personality. Also noticed Lakan and Maomao have the same eye colour

We see more of Basen! He briefly appeared in the first cour where we saw him training with Jinshi in episode 5. Poor guy had to witness Jinshi and Gaoshun forcibly detoxifying Maomao hahahaha

Final scene is pretty ominous...

Basen getting a crash course into the relationship dynamics of those three and is probably like "I would like to leave now. Please do not call in the future."

あと、寝たきりの女性が猫猫の母親っぽくなってきたところでふと思ったんだけど。今は猫猫の毒への執着はお笑い要素として描かれてる。でも母親が寝たきりだとしたら、猫猫は母親を治そうとしてる、あるいはしてたのかも？
猫猫が後宮で働くことになったのを、おやじが「因果なものだ」って言ってたのは、この（羅漢との）件のことだったのかもしれない

It seems like the courtesan that Lakan is referring to is Maomao's mother. The question is whether he caused her pregnancy, her being (presumably) bedridden, or both.

Also, a stray thought now that it seems more likely that the bedridden woman is Maomao's mother. Right now we're seeing Maomao's obsession with poison as comedic quirk of her. But seeing as her mother is bedridden, could it be that Maomao is/was trying to cure her mother?

It could be that Maomoa's father was referencing this incident (with Lakan) when he said that it was "a twist of fate" about Maomao working in the rear palace.

If Lakan caused her pregnancy, and given that Luomen is a eunuch (and doesn't resemble Maomao), it seems like he's more likely to be her biological father.

明るい雰囲気のことが多いけど、あの世界の厳しい現実もちゃんと描いてる。暗い感情と明るい感情を難なく行き来する声優陣はすごい。前の話で、あの背の高い女の人が猫猫を軍部に行かせなかったのは正しかった。少なくとも善意からだったってことだな。
今回の謎の意味はまだ考え中。海藻みたいに、この地域で密輸が行われてるとか？犯人に案を吹き込んだ兵士は正直かなり怪しい。1クール目の別の事件にもいたし。
この緑の髪の女は緑青館で働いてた。1クール目に昏睡状態の女の人が出てきたよな。髪の色が少し違って見えたけど、同じ人かもしれない。羅漢のせいで昏睡状態になったのかも

While the show is often light hearted, it shows the grim reality of that world. Credit to VA for juggling between dark and light emotions effortlessly. That tall lady rightfully stopped Maomao from going to military headquarters in previous episodes. That means at least she had good intent.

Still figuring out the point of today's mystery. Maybe Illegal smuggling inside this region like the sea weed. That soldier who gave the idea to the culprit is pretty sus ngl. He was also present in another case in the previous cour.

This green haired woman worked in Virdigris house. There was a comatose woman shown in previous cour. They could be the same person although hair colour looked slightly different. Maybe Lakan was the reason she got into a coma.

There's already been quite a few moments of Maomao saying things like "that's just my lot in life" which really exposes the harshness of being a low-caste person in china.
Not that being higher up makes it much better (snip snip)

I take it back! Lakan is probably not a good guy after all! I hope he didn't do what it seems like he did.

On the other hand, I'm excited to see more of Basen. He seems very upright. And I hope the court lady with the magnificent eyebrows comes into play soon!

Courtesan of ancient china is more akin to modern day hostesses. They make use of heir talent of entertaining guests and having wonderful chat with customers but has strict no touching policy.
