テンポがやたら遅く感じるのはそのせいかもな。少なくとも、彼女が何を企んでてなぜそうしようと思ったかは見せてくれた。あとは勇者の一行で彼女が何をしてたのかだな。2話やってもまだ、頭が切れるってこと以外に何ができるのか分からん。

They have a demon problem. He had no general or organized militia. She volunteered to be his general and take them out. Why is he so mad to have someone do the work for him and keep his town safe? What is he even seething about?

暗殺のあと、バカ殿下が衛兵を何人か殺したせいで、予定より早く殺しがバレた。しかも魔物の援軍の前に姿を見せちまったから、鎧を見られて人間の仕業だと知られた。
それで魔物たちが犯人を探して街を封鎖したんで、魔族の大陸から人間の大陸へ逃げる道がなくなった。
そこで奴隷がスケープゴートにされた。「犯人」とその家族を殺したら（アニメの話で、小説だと結局魔物たちは暴れ回った）、魔物たちは警戒を解いた。それで一行は魔法の船に紛れ込んで人間の大陸にたどり着き、奴隷を虐殺してる魔物たちを置き去りにしたってわけ。ちなみに気になってたら言っとくと、エカテリーナは透明化の魔法が使える。

After the assassination, baka denka killed some guards and the murder was discovered earlier than planned. He also disclosed himself before demon reinforcements, so they saw his armor and knew that humans were the culprits.
The city was subsequently closed off since the demons were searching for the killers, there was no escape route from the demon continent to the human one.
The slave became a scapegoat - after killing the "murderer" and his family (in the anime; they still went on a rampage in the novel), the demons lifted the security. and the party could slip into a magic boat and reach the human continent, leaving behind the demons that were slaughtering their slaves. Yes, Ekaterina can cast invisibility magic in case you were wondering.

女主人公って未来から来た転生者じゃないって言い切れる？
たぶんこのあと、彼女が仲間たちを紹介して、どれだけ大事に思ってるか、全員が自分の命令で死んだこと、だから二度目の人生では同じ過ちを繰り返さないって語るパートになると思う。

俺的には、鎧がわりとリアルなところと、RPGのキャラみたいにずっと同じ格好でうろつくんじゃなく、やることに合わせてちゃんと着替えてるところがいい。服装も筋が通ってて、露出も控えめに見える。

For me, it's the fairly realistic armor, and the fact that people change their clothes to suit whatever they're doing rather than just walking around in one outfit all the time like an RPG character. The outfits also seem pretty reasonable and modest.

Different period, different warfare, this is medieval warfare, soldiers fighting in close quarters, not with guns and cannons.

ロメリアの格好は野戦指揮官のそれじゃないな、それは確か。

Romelia isn't dressed as a field commander should, that's for sure.

彼女は自分の兵を率いて任務に出る貴族だぞ。動きやすいし、汚れが目立たない（暗い色）し、男勝りな性格にも合ってる。ばあやも女が指揮を執るなんて聞いたことがないって言ってたし、大部隊を率いてるわけでも、差をつけなきゃいけない下級士官が何段もいるわけでも、服装を合わせなきゃいけない上官がいるわけでもない。
首のベルトは、まあ変だとは思う。マントを押さえる役目はしてるみたいだけど。

I don't mean it as a "fashion necessity", but as a functional security. A commander needs to have a good armor that protects their whole body from even stray arrows or other projectiles. If a stone hit her head, it would be game over. A helmet is the bare minimum.

信じられないかもしれないけど、古代の大半の時代、都市や町の民兵に国が給料を払うなんてことはほとんどなかったんだ。あくまで大切な人を守るために戦うもので、せいぜい戦争に勝ったあとに戦利品をもらえるかどうかだった。
例えば古代ローマは、紀元前1世紀ごろのマリウスの改革まで兵士に直接給料を払ってなかった。ローマは600年ほど、戦利品と、戦えなくなった退役兵に与える土地だけでやってきたんだ。装備も支給されなくて、自分で買わなきゃいけなかった

you may find it incredible, but payed national soldiers wasn't really a thing in city/town militias for most of ancient time. You were supposed to fight to protect people dear to you after all, you could at best try to get the loot after winning the war.
For example ancient Rome didn't directly pay their soldiers until Marius reforms around the I century BC: Rome went for about 600 years just with loots and lands to be assigned to veterans when they couldn't fight no more. They also didn't give you equipment, you had to buy it yourself

うん、このアニメは最高だ。キャラ同士の自然なやり取りを通して、たくさんの情報が伝わってくる。ロメリアの心の声は一切なしで、代わりに周りのいろんな視点が、彼女の行動をそれぞれ違うふうに受け取ってる。
ばあやはロメリアの子ども時代とのつながりで、今の主人公が昔とはまるで違うことを見せてくれる。魔王討伐の旅の話を知ってる貴族たちですら彼女を見くびってるから、彼女の功績や実力についての情報はせいぜい乏しいんだと分かる。兵士たちは何の情報も持ってなくて、見た目から推測するしかない。
こういう「這い上がる弱者」ものなら、長い前振りにも意味がある。多くの作品はつかみの最初の5分でここを片付けてしまうけど、これは情報を伏せることで、それを集めていく過程を面白く感じさせるいいお手本だ。

Yup, this show rules. Lots of information coming across through natural character interactions. We get zero internal monologue from Romelia, but multiple perspectives swirling around her all giving different takes on her actions.
The maid is a tie to Romelia's childhood that shows the MC we're seeing now has a strong contrast to her past. The Nobles with information on her Demon King journey still underestimate her so we know details about her contributions or qualifications are sparse at best. The soldiers have zero information and can only make guesses based on appearances.
This is the kind of "rising underdog" stuff that justifies a long build-up. So many shows sweep through this in the first five minutes of establishing a hook, but this is a great example of how withholding information can make gathering it feel engaging.

個人的には、すぐに答えが欲しいって（だけの）話じゃないと思う…今のアニメって、ほとんどが12話で終わってそれっきりになるだろ。ちゃんと物語を語ろうとする作品がじっくり進めてたら、話が形になる前にアニメが終わっちゃう。
2話じゃまだ判断するには全然足りないけど、このペースの作品が、外伝的なエピソードや中ボスを片付けたあたりで終わっちゃうのをたくさん見てきた。これがそうなるって感じはしないけど、期待できるアニメがゆっくり始まると、いつもちょっと身構えちゃうんだよな。

IMHO it's not (just, at least) being after instant gratification... The current state of anime is that most get 12 episodes and are never heard from again. If a show is going to try and tell a story, a slow burn is only going to result in the anime ending before that actually materializes.
Two episodes is definitely not enough to judge just yet, but I've seen plenty of series at this pace end after basically finishing a side story / miniboss. I don't get the impression that this will be one of them, at least, but it always makes me a little wary when a promising anime starts off slow.

書いてくれたこと全部が、このアニメにワクワクした理由だよ。俺の好みじゃない逆ハーレムっぽい構成ではあるけどね（最後にそれに釣られて見たのは『サイレント・ウィッチ』だった）
1話の彼女の腹の据わりっぷりに、こっちも完全に引き込まれた。

Everything you wrote is what made me excited for this one, even if it has that reverse harem makeup that I'm not really into. (last one that tricked me into watching it was "Silent Witch")
Her being absolutely locked in in the first episode had me locked in on this show.

Couldn't say it better myself. Far too many shows (both anime and live) "over-explain" things via monologues these days...

What she does and how the other characters speak of her are more than enough to keep u interested

あと目だな。見逃しそうな一瞬の表情が、すごく多くを語ってる。鎧と馬を「交渉」してたときとかね。彼女はここで何が起きてるか完全に分かってる。ほかの作品ほど言葉で説明されてもいない。

and her eyes. you get like blink and youll miss it expressions that say VOLUMES. like when she was 'barganing' for the armor and horses. she knows EXACTLY what is going on here. it isnt even spelled out as much as it would be in other shows.

この語り方が生む先の読めなさがすごい。彼女の考えが見えないから、兵士たちと同じ気持ちにさせられる。分かってるのは、死んだ罪のない人たちの仇を討ちたいらしいってことだけで、それ以外はさっぱりだ。実はすごい戦士なのに、なぜか魔王討伐の旅では戦わなかったのか、それとも優れた戦略家なのか。このアニメは面白い。

It's amazing the level of uncertainty this storytelling method creates. Because we can't see her thoughts we're forced to feel like the soldiers do. All we know is that she seems to want to avenge the innocent people that died, but beyond that, we're clueless. Either she'll turn out to be an amazing fighter that for some reason refused to fight during the demon lord campaign, or she'll be a great strategist. This anime is interesting.

ほんとそれ。これから戦う魔物の知能についての細かい情報が、第三者の口から語られたのもすごく良かった。でもそれが本当なのか、知能のある個体の数が合ってるのかも分からないし、ラストシーンでも答えは出さない。知能のことを抜きにしても、もう十分脅威に見えるように描いてるだけだ。
かなり面白いし、たぶん今期の中でも面白いほうの一本だと思う。

Couldn't agree more. I also loved that the little detail about the intelligence of the Demons they are going to fight was told by a third party. But we're also not sure if that's actually true or not, or if the numbers of intelligent ones are correct, that final scene also doesn't tell us, just makes them seem like a threat already even if we don't factor their supposed intelligence.
Pretty interesting, probably one of the more interesting ones of the season.

王子の一行での役回りからして、彼女はどっちかというと戦略家なんじゃないかって気がする。戦ってるところは見てないし、正直ここまで焦点が当たってるのは彼女の頭の良さだしな。
これは毎週いちばん楽しみなアニメのひとつになりそうだ。

I get the sense because of her role in the Prince's party I think she will be more of a strategist. We haven't seen her fight and honestly her intelligence is what has been the focus so far.
This is definitely shaping up to be one of the anime I look forward to the most week after week.

俺もそう思ってた。そうなると気になるのが、あのバカ連中が道に迷ったり、魔物に押し切られたり、奇襲を食らったりしなかったのは、どれだけロメリアのおかげだったのかってこと。
で、彼女は戦闘で活躍しなかったから、ほかの連中は役立たずだと責めて、王子は彼女の才能を使いながらちゃんと評価しなかったんだろうな。

That was my thought as well. Makes me wonder - how much of her role in the party was making sure that bunch of idiots didn't get lost, or overran by demons, or surprised by an attack because Romelia was there.
And because she wasn't active in fights, the rest just blamed her for being useless, while Prince used her talents without giving her proper credit.

今回の訓練シーンからすると、旅の間も一行の戦いを観察して、チームとしてうまく動けるようにさりげなく鍛えてたのかもな。

With the training scene this episode maybe she also spent time observing the party's fights and subtly training them to work better as a team while on their journey.

それか、バフ役なのかも。新兵の訓練を見る前から、どれだけ強いかも知らないのにあれだけ自信満々だったのを考えると、俺は後者を期待しちゃうな。

Either that, or she is a buffer. Considering how confident she is even before she watch those recruits training and not knowing how strong they are, it definitely make me expecting the latter.

This is one of the signs of a well-written story. Nowadays, there's so much over-explaining that it gets to the point where it basically feels like an audiobook...

ほんとそれ。視聴者からするとロメリアには何か計画がありそうに見える。でもアルの見方もすごく分かるんだよ。甘やかされた貴族のお嬢様が辺境の街に乗り込んできて、経験のない新兵を連れて魔物と戦わせようとする。落ちぶれた貴族が名誉を取り戻すために、全員を死なせるのが目に見えている無謀な企てにしか見えない。
ロメリアがみんなの予想をどう超えて、自分の野望が付き合う価値のあるものだと証明するのか楽しみ。とはいえ、アルが完全に間違ってるわけじゃなくて、この最初の戦いでロメリアがいくつかミスをしてくれたら面白いと思う。最初から完璧な主人公じゃなくて、成長の余地ができるからね。
第2話で1話よりさらに引き込まれた

Indeed. As a viewer, it seems like Romelia has some sort of plan. However, I can really understand Al's perspective. Romelia rolls up in a hinterland city as a pampered noble lady and takes the new, inexperienced recruits to fight demons. It comes across as a naive endeavour just waiting to get everyone killed in the name of a disgraced noble's quest to restore their name.
I'm excited to see how Romelia will exceed their expectations and prove that her ambitions are worthy of their time. Still, it would be cool if Al isn't completely wrong and if Romelia makes some mistakes during this first campaign. That would establish some room for growth instead of having the MC be flawless from the beginning.
This second episode hooked me even more than the first.

On the other hand, I suspect Romelia has a good impression of Al precisely because he's the sort of person to be wary of her and question her. She clearly wants competent subordinates to help protect her people, and that means someone she can trust, which needs to be someone with the competence to not blindly accept a leader who hasn't proved herself at all

Yeah, I can see that being the case. But he also seems to be the most experienced warrior, considering the scars and the fact that the others chose him as captain. It’d be hard to have a bad impression of him when Romelia doesn’t really have any alternatives.

I think this is a part of why I'm enjoying it, the mystery aspect behind her character.

Really liked the armor design here. Felt more practical than your typical fantasy armor.

腹と股間のほとんどを守ってないじゃん。体の中でも一番当たりやすくて、傷を負うと一番危ない場所なのに。それに腹は大して動きを妨げずに鎧で守れる。少なくともすねよりはずっと簡単だ

It doesn't cover most of the belly or the groin, which are some of the easiest parts of your body to hit, and some of the most dangerous to take a wound in. The belly is also easily armoured without losing significant mobility - certainly more so than your shins.

こういう作品だと、兵士は大げさなフルプレートか、戦場なのに派手な儀礼服を着てることが多い。
それに比べてここの鎧はずっと地に足がついてると思う。兵士の身分に見合ってるし（特に胸当てはローマのハスタティの絵でよく見るやつを思い出す）、肩当てや兜みたいにファンタジーらしい飾りも残してる。
それはそれとして、下半身はもっと守ったほうがいいってのは同意。デザイン的にも実用的にもね

In shows like this soldiers you typically get soldiers in exaggerated full-plate armor or extravagant ceremonial garb during battle.
In contrast I find the armors here to be much more grounded; they seem appropriate for soldiers of their standing (the chest piece in particular reminds me of what you usually see on depictions of Roman Hastati) yet have flourishing that maintain that fantasy flavor (like their shoulder pieces or helmets).
That aside, I do agree that the soldiers could use more protection for their lower bodies, both from a design perspective and in terms of practicality.

I do think that most of the armour looks like real armour pieces, but I think they were going more for an aesthetic of realism than actual realism.

also they are armed with spears, which is what MOST armies used for the longest time. spears/polearms. cheap and effective. i am getting serious 08th MS team vibes.

to me they feel like the kind of hastily armed levy that could be mustered out in the provinces. Not great, not terrible.
I especially like the lobster tail helmets they have.

They kinda look like Roman helmets except they're made of metal and have a viking-looking knightly visor. That's peak fantasy right there.

作者は少なくともゲームをやったことはあるっぽい。タンクになれそうな大男がいて、騎兵に回された二人もいる。ここでも戦術が見られるといいな

It does feel the author has at least played the games. You got a big guy who could be a tank. Then there are two guys assigned as a cavalry. Hopefully we get some tactics in here too.

I thought we were going to get hit with a fanservice scene with Romelia when we hit the showers, but it's the guys. I respect it.

It isn't, but it's just a natural reaction after watching enough anime. Oh here comes the fanservice scene kind of thing.
It's little things like that that win points for me even if it seems small.

But why were they surprised at the captain's scars? If they regularly trained together they probably saw them before.

That was not well done. Some maid and butler dialogue right there.

作品の他の部分の雰囲気と比べて、別の脚本家が無理やりねじ込んだ感じがしたのは確か。上の判断でサービスシーンを入れることになって、その部分を書いた人がバカげた説明台詞しか書けなかったのかもな

It definitely felt like some other writer shoehorned that in compared to the feel of the rest of the show. Maybe some executive decision to push fan service and the writer who did that part could only write some ridiculous exposition dialogue.

Everyone’s underestimating Romelia. It’s to be expected I supposed. I mean she strolls up without so much as a word and requests to put together a whole unit for demon extermination. No one knows what she can do. I suppose we’ll be finding out next week. It seems her experience fighting the demon lord with the prince’s party really changed her. I’m sure she’s far stronger than people think.

Well Romelia has a bad name after the engagement has been cancelled. No one really supports her other than her maid and dad. And the maid wants her to keep it easy

ひとつ確かなのは、ロメリアは人との意思疎通が苦手ってこと。戦いの直前でも兵士はまだ疑ってたし

One thing for sure, Romelia has a communication skill issue since even just before the battle the soldier still doubt her

あるいは、彼女を疑うことで兵士同士、特に部隊長への信頼が強まるのかも。彼が歴戦の兵士で、その証拠の傷跡まであるのを結構時間をかけて見せてたのは偶然じゃないと思う。終盤でも青いやつが隊長に安心を求めるように見てたし。
それに、一緒に戦ってくれる指揮官と、遠くから命令するだけの指揮官じゃ大違いだ。もちろんロメリアが戦わないと仮定しての話だけど。今のところそうっぽいけど、本当のところは分からない

Or maybe by doubting her it makes the soldiers trust one another more and especially the unit commander, I don't think it was a coincidence they spent a good amount of time showing how he is battle hardened and has the scars to show it. Also near the end we see the blue dude looking to the commander for some assurances.
There is also a big diference in a commander that is fighting with you vs a commander who is ordering you from afar. Assuming Romelia doesn't fight of course, which so far it seems to be the case, though we don't really know.

同意。話の流れ的に、彼女がこの道を選んで、兵士たちにこれだけ気を配っておいて、全員死なせるほどしくじるってのは筋が通らない。ただ、彼女がどこでこんな経験を積んだのか想像しにくいんだよな。王子が（少なくとも終盤には）彼女に作戦で一行を指図させるなんてありえないよね？　だとすると、みんなが魔王に集中してたから、彼女はずっと自分で少人数を率いて魔物と戦ってたとか？

Agreed, plotwise it wouldn't make sense for her to go down this route, pay so much attention to the soldiers, and then mess up enough to get them all killed. It's just hard imagining where she got all this experience from. No way would the Prince let her order around their party(at least by the end) with strategies right? So maybe cause they were so focused on the demon king, she led small groups against demons herself this whole time?

The party did called her out for, in their eyes, never fighting and only watching from the sidelines. I bet she spend the entire journey to the Demon King’s castle analyzing demons, getting an idea about their weak points and coming up with strategies that she may or may not have used when the party wasn’t watching

兵士たちがよくあるひょろっとしたアニメの男子に見えるのに、シャワーに入った瞬間そびえ立つマッチョになるのが面白い

It's amusing how the soldiers look like your typical lanky anime boys but the moment they go in the showers they are towering beefcakes.

昨夜あんまり寝てなかったせいか、砦の主のことを最初はいい人だと思って、言うことをそのまま信じちゃってた。少なくとも根っからのクズってわけじゃなさそうだし、ただ現実的なだけで、うちらの小さなお姫様に利用されてると思ってるだけだといいな。ロメリアが彼を味方につけるかもしれないし。
分かるけど……作品の最初から最後まで、ばあやが何にでも大騒ぎし続けるのは勘弁してほしい。
ロメリアが次回何をするのかすごく楽しみ。戦術の天才なのか？　先頭に立って率いるのか？　それとも役に立つ道具を持っててうまく使うのか？

Guess I didnt get enough sleep last night cause I actually thought the fort lord was a good guy at first and believed him at face value. At least he doesnt seem like a total piece of s**t, hoping he's just pragmatic and thinks our little Princess is just using him. Maybe Romelia will win him over.
I get it....but I hope we dont have to go the ENTIRE show with the maid freaking out over everything.
Really looking forward to what Romelia does next ep, is she gonna me a tactical genius? Lead from the front? Or have some useful doodads that she puts to good use?

I hope we dont have to go the ENTIRE show with the maid freaking out over everything.
If Romelia didn't really fight at all during the demon lord campaign, her behavior is understandable. If she never saw Romelia fight at all or even pick up a weapon, she's right to doubt she can even fight a kid. I hope she turns out to be a solid fighter and the maid will calm down.
