>Don't be a baby
>Do your own thing
>But we won't give you permission to do your own thing because r-reasons
Am i a brainlet? i'm not understanding this
i think he was telling him to just go ahead with it and ignore needing permission, because men who do their own thing don't need permission
it was a test lutz failed cuz he's a brainlet child
if he's going to disobey them then he needs to work hard by himself without the help of his parents
he should't go looking for new parents who can support him, only a baby would do that, not a man
Wait, so what's the point of the room if he can just hand her the gag jewel?
Magic tools require magic to use, and while other people cannot hear what you say they can still see what you're doing.
Man this feels like such a wasted episode.
Wish they did some more world building around magic and magical items.

I find intriging by the amounth of paperwork or office like work the high priest has ? Was that normal for nobles and church member dueing the middle age ?
>people who did nothing wrong
Jesus christ that escalated into one dumb f*****g mess.
Lutz needs to learn how to read people better if he's going to become a merchant.
He's straight up said that before. He wants Myne and he likes the two of them. He's advised Myne how to make Lutz relevant to her bussiness dealings as the central figure in her distribution network and made her follow through. Now he's monopolising that figurehead for himself.
It's as clever as it is overt
What is Myne's favorite book?
She doesn't have one. She likes reading but she has no fondness for literature or learning.
Is benno gay ? Why hasnt he gotten another wife and is neber seeing flirting with women ?
Did you forget? He had oneitis super bad but then she kicked the bucket.

Because unlike a lot of isekai protags she isn't an adult in a child's body. She's a child with some of an adult's memories. The difference is very important, and part of why Bookworm is in the upper tier of isekai stories.
Twll me something dude. Could one really make a pizza or pound cake with the techology and ingredients avaible in the middle age, like myne does ?
pepperoni was made in america, so i don't know how she make it here.
For a book-centered anime it should mention book titles more often. Like in every episode Main should remember a specific title she read and then use it for something.
Yeah, you'd think if she was so erudite about literature, she'd quote a book or two; but so far there's been zip -- I'd even settle for Shakespeare at this point, literally anything. You don't read a s**t ton of books without it bleeding into your character a little more. Maybe the author doesn't read that many classics?
If hollow namedropping is your thing then there is a music based show entirely based on that stuff airing right now.
It's like Schrödingers cat!
To be honest if the girl of my age will suddenly turn into a a sly merchant with high bargaining skills, I'd get suspicious too. The real question is why everyone around isn't noticing the same.
Has Ferdinand started using her shampoo? His hair is shiny now.

Seems like everyone in the north half of town has.
Benno must be making a killing. He robbed Main with that low ball price.
No, Lutz family was totally inconsistent the whole episode. No you can't, yes you can, no you can't, double no you can't with some yes you can slipped in.
It's clearly backed up sidestory, and needed to be cleared out. Now Main can go back to her books. She's still got a printing press to make and orphanage famine to solve.
Oh and clearly, using the tau-matoes means that she can't be useful by giving mana to the church. You can't run an empire on flash cards.
It's easy for us to look down and noses and question her for not using the fruits to cure her own magic problems and those of the few other kids that may have the devouring.
But she's only seen these things twice ever and all they've done is give a strange sensation that made her immediately drop it.
at least she is not fake "noble" spirit like. like being reborn in a world were women are enslaved, being all "thats horrible" and then doing nothing to help them despite being a well loved kings daughter
I assumed Main was weak due to her mana overflow. Why does she still get fevers? I mean even if she was born weak even beyond mana why the fevers?
fevers are unrelated as far as I know. She just is naturraly sick AND have the Consuming.

More like ... uh, compressive and elastic maintenance?
Human calculator.
Myne should tell him something from further mathematics or quantum physics. Modern science will be for them something like a magic for us.
You try explaining how modern stuff works without ending like this. She probably knows as much about quantum physics as Ferdinand does.
Gotta respect Ferdinand.
Went through all the trouble of repairing a family, helping a boy achieve his future career, and aiding a merchant in securing a successor... all to just fix his calculator
And he questioned Main wanting to do something for the orphans so she could read with a clear conscious. lol
Today's endcard
I was hoping that Ferdinand would've at least showed some remorse directly to Myne in the hidden room for the whole throwing her in detention thing, but it didn't happen. Besides that, I see best boy Lutz cry, I cry.
It’s a real high quality art that end card.
It's always high quality.
his attitude towards Myne has softened quite a bit though. An episode ago he would have scolded Myne for crying in public.
look around the room though, there are no retainers besides myne's and the priests. Otherwise he would've stopped her aswell.
I really wish that there was actual subtle hints of the dad and family tacitly giving permission. Then it would make sense to pull the it was a misunderstanding all along card. I went back to look at the earlier scenes and there was none that I could make out. The end was quite heartwarming and all, but there wasn't any substance behind it.
There weren't any hints because we're getting this story through the eyes of Myne. Who just got scolded at the end of the episode for acting without hearing out all concerned parties.
Myne wasn't present in a lot of those early scenes because she was sick in bed, so I can't really accept that argument (even if it makes sense in the LN, idk, I haven't read it). I just think that the narrative wasn't really well executed.
I was so confused during the discussion because it made absolutely no sense to me. I recall Lutz telling Myne that his dad did tell him to do what he wanted but literally everything else about the situation was his entire family damn near explicitly telling him to stop. Lutz is absolutely right. How the hell was he supposed to get it if they didn't spell it out? In fact, never mind spelling it out, how was he supposed to get it when they were actively and explicitly against it? That's been my biggest head scratching moment out of the entire show.
Not only that, they explicitly denied him consent that he needed to go on the business trip then continued to do so even when brought into the discussion with the priest. Even if we swallow the lie that they were supposed to be supporting him all along, the only way to interpret that part is that the father is too dumb to understand the concept of required parental permission.
can someone please gif that cheek pinching scene
With a perfect loop preferably
So let me get this straight, his parents were fine with Lutz being a merchant all along they just couldn’t express it well which caused a misunderstanding?
Then why didn’t they just sign the permission slip? Yeah I’m not sure wtf was going on but yay for happy ending I guess.
Next week, oh crap not more retainers!
Then why didn’t they just sign the permission slip? Yeah I’m not sure wtf was going on but yay for happy ending I guess.
They thought the trip would be dangerous. These people are so poor that riding a carriage there didn't even cross their mind.
No they know about that. They were worried about bandits and stuff.
I think there is a bigger problem underlying Lutz's parents' actions and words.
>How am I supposed to get it if you don’t spell it out?
Lutz's mom claimed his father is not good with words. While that could be more of a personality thing, remember this is a world where very few people can read or write anything more than numbers. When the head priest did ask for reasons, Lutz's parents hesitate because they're struggling to communicate their complicated worries and emotions with words. The few words that are spoken do come out as overly harsh and imbued with anger. For Lutz's dad, it's much more straightforward to convey his concerns through actions, but that leads him to physically lash out at his son like in the beginning of the episode.
Not to mention that kids in medieval times has a little to no choices of what to do in the future. Lutz going against them that strongly might be quite a shock for them. Lack of communication and information makes the situation even worse.
Don't want your calculator doing that rainbow-eyed chokey thing. Best to keep the calculator happy.
After how last week's episode ended I honestly wasn't expecting to see an episode dedicated to Lutz and Ferdinand fixing his calculator today. So at the end of the day, the cause of this problem was due to miscommunication and misunderstanding because Lutz's dad is a tsundere.
I love the fact that Ferdinand used that device that normally is used to prevent eavesdropping to muffled Myne.
Today's End Card.
Alright, I'll say it ... This is the worst episode of the series. Hopefully it stays that way.
The whole conflict was dumb and the resolution just left me angry. Lutz' parents were all over the map, telling him to do as he please while not giving him permission to do it. It's one thing for Ralph to run into a store yelling, but his mom?? She's a grown woman, she's not gonna go running into the upper class store her son works in and make a scene. And why the hell is his dad still questioning if he can make it as a merchant, he's brought home money on several occasions and has hired his brothers to do stuff before.
All that aside, there was a lot that happened this episode. Lutz became Benno's succesor, and resolved his family issues. Main learned Ferdinand's name, and the two became much closer. Lutz' family learned that Main is in the church (not clear if they realize she's a priestess though). I hope we see more from that last point in particular.
I was thinking the same thing. Main was barely relevant in this ep.
Deid is a low point to be sure.
Damn I teared up as well once Myne started with the waterworks...
Happy to see a conflict get resolved with Myne taking a literal backseat this time, this show has such a good supporting cast that I always enjoy seeing them get a chance to shine.
Also any excuse to see Benno all dressed up
Eh its pretty common for household disputes to occur due to lack of effective communication.
The rise on divorces thanks to the Covid-19 shows it.
I guess, this secret room will become a really popular place for them to visit. Myne was always a troublemaker. Although, the reason for that partially changed. She was quite selfish at the beginning and most of troubles were from that. Then she started caring about other people. Who was close to her at first, other people later.
They should use the magic device so that the head priest can shout at Main anywhere and anytime with needing to go to a separate room, they would save so much time !
Haha, they should give one to Benno as well. I can see them becoming brothers-in-scolding.

Benno: "Right, im kinda not good on that"
Probably the worst episode so far, which is easily said since everything else has been fantastic. Hope this was just a bump in the road.
The plot of this was drawn out for no reason in my opinion. Such a stupid family squabble settled by nobility, it wasn’t worth it. The problem began and ended in the same episode, without any significant change to Lutz or Myne’s plot lines. We didn’t see his family change to accept him in a different way, we didn’t see Lutz actually take an important step forward on his own path.
That’s just my objective thoughts. My subjective thought is that this conflict was dumb and far removed from the family dynamics that the show has entertained us with so far. Lutz reminds me of myself when I was younger, not realizing the toxic relationship to the family around him and being forced to accept it since he has no alternative. I’m probably projecting a little but it would have been better if any of those issues changed the story in any way.
>The problem began and ended in the same episode, without any significant change to Lutz or Myne’s plot lines.
Yeah, if I recommend this I would probably tell them to skip this episode totally and just tell them "Oh yeah, the priest is called Ferdinand. Bye".
we just saw Lutz getting a super promotion that just about every apprentice dreams about, especially if the shop is already doing really well.
while the anime doesn't have time to explain everything, you would have to look into the parent's reaction to understand its a big deal. and we did see the family getting a whole lot better picture how well Lutz is doing in his shop.
And we got to see more of the dynamics of his family, or more how his father is.It wasn't that toxic imo, except for Lutz always have the short end of the stick compared to his brothers.
You also see Ferdinand learn more how families are supposed to be, caring for each other, so you could say his cynicism towards families gets toned down.
That one line has me so worked up. They claim that was supposed to be his way of accepting Lutz's decision, but it came immediately after Lutz said, "I've had enough of this! I'm leaving!" I don't see how that could possibly be interpreted as anything except telling him in the most brutal way possible, "Go ahead! Leave! You won't be missed!"
To be honest, I did not like this episode.
Lutz parents are bad at communicating? Like they are so dumb that they thought they were going there by foot and it didn't even slip Lutz mind to mention that either? So far that it had to go to the point Lutz considered adoption as a valid point?
I mean yeah, that's anime logic here but I feel you could have brought the point "hear both sides of the story" across better.
Also why do they always go to the secret room if the headset magic item exists?
There's a lot of emotions and pride (especially with Lutz's dad) involved here so you can't really expect everyone to be clear-headed and rational about things, even Lutz. Also, the background of Lutz's family. This merchant work stuff and even the idea of venturing to another town is something they're unfamiliar with. It makes sense that an illiterate family that only knows carpentry would be scared and paranoid for their son.
The headset magic item. Yeah, they should've had that from the start. Doesn't make too much sense. But to speak on the story's behalf, maybe it's something to do with the unique customs and culture of this religious environment, with the head priest trying not to recklessly abandon proper priestly ettiquette lol.
just because there's an explanation doesn't mean it couldn't have been done better. Misscomunication is a common thing in the series and as a trope in general, but the way it was shown in this episode specifically just felt very weak to me.
I get that there was emotions and pride in play, but the writer could've done a better job. I've seen worse, but I like this show so I want it to be better.
How long has she been working at the cathedral now that she didn't know the priest's name?
According to Quof, the translator for the LN, this has something to do with how Japanese society works. It's common to refer to people by their titles, like how Kaguya always refers to Myu-kun as president.
Head Priest: "You never asked"
The greatest plot point this episode: the Head Priest's name is Ferdinand!
Who care whatever else happened this episode. Now we don't have to be so frikkin' confused between Head Priest and High Priest.
Still don't know why they didn't go with High Bishop like in the LN..so much easier to understand
Just call him Fat satan
I still don't understand how people got confused. One is "head priest" and the other is "high priest". Head and high. They're different words. Even refer to different functions (high priest = highest authority, head priest = daily task a bit like a headmaster). Why would we confuse them ?
no, the high priest is Ferdinand in the LN and Manga.
The head priest is the Bishop / high bishop
I came out of this episode mad and utterly confused. Lutz's parents practically gaslighted and tried to destroy his career and when he got fed up with it and "did whatever it took" they barge into his workplace to embarrass him and then turn it on him. I'm glad the general consensus seems to be that his parents were in the wrong here. Finding out the Head Priest's name is Ferdinand and his willingness to deal with this family drama just to help Main was nice. Seeing his relationship with her grow is nice.
His fancy hair, tho
Either it was terrible direction or Lutz's dad specifically is just really bad at communicating. Both of those suck, not a fan of what went down in this episode.
This episode really, REALLY made me like Ferdinand more though, he alone solved all of this and was considerate when he needed to be at the end with Myne. I know he has to abide cause of the church/surroundings there/the etiquette but he handled this situation well, good on him.
It was terrible direction AND Lutz father sucks at speaking. The only reason he bothers to explain and not just yell is because a noble is telling him to do so.
Yeah I think this episodes was more about Ferdinand, especially his gaze in the end when he saw Lutz' family leaving.
XD
They turned the situation into an onverly complicated drama but probably a very authentic description of a family relationship when the parts are so stubborn and don't know how to properly show their feelings. [The dad is complete tsundere](https://i.imgur.com/oKvkLST.jpg).
[](#azusalaugh)
Also, it's a small detail but [I like how they keep being consistent with the opacity in the washed and the non washed hairs](https://i.imgur.com/OqSsYoH.jpg) in the show. XD
He's a **7 year old kid** though. I don't really expect him to know these things, read between the lines or be thoroughly prepared to make his case on why he needs to go on this trip. You can't expect a 7 year old to read the room like an adult can for example, you expect them to act like a 7 year old kid (though in this world 7 year olds are definitely more mature given the environment lol). They could've just asked to meet his boss or something. No one in his family even knew where he worked at.
Can anyone who read the light novel clarify what was Lutz's parents motivation and reasoning? I am thoroughly confused as to what was their intention. In the first half of the episode, it seemed like they really did not support his choice of career, but they were actually supportive all along. Was the light novel just as confusing or did the anime just do a bad job at adapting this chapter?
LN was much clearer - Lutz's dad (Deeds) is generally trying to do what's best for Lutz, he just really sucks at communicating.
Deeds gave permission for Lutz to be a merchant since it's what Lutz wanted, but later on he wouldn't give permission to leave the city because it's unsafe and there's no legitimate reason for an apprentice merchant to leave the city. (Deeds has no idea about Myne/Benno/etc. He doesn't know that Lutz's position is significantly different than a normal apprentice merchant (which he also knows little about.))
Okay this clears up something for me. Because in the anime I don’t think they ever showed Deed ever accepting Lutz decision being a merchant. And in this episode the entire family seemed like they reverted back into not liking Lutz being a merchant.
There was some kinda important information that was skipped over in the episode.
There are two forms of apprenticeship in this society. I can't recall the terms or all of the details, so I'll just call them short-term and long-term apprenticeships. Short-term apprentices generally work for a short period of time to learn the craft and maybe develop some extra skills/contacts, and at the end of their term they can sign on for a long-term apprenticeship at the same shop or with another master in a related trade.
Lutz was registered to Benno as a short term apprentice, so it was unusual that Benno would take someone like him on such an important business trip. That was a major part of the misunderstanding, Deed didn't think Benno should take his son out of town when he's only been working for him for a couple months. He also wasn't fully aware of the kind of work Lutz has already been doing for Benno's shop. Poor communication on all sides was the root cause of all this.
I may be mis-remembering a couple bits here and there and glossing over still more fine details, but that's the best explanation I've got for how this came about.
Thank you this makes way more sense
The dad cant both say Lutz wasted everyone times and be the reason why things have gotten to bad. He refused to allow travel to another town then made up crap about how it Lutz wanted to he just should have
This was a pretty confusing episode when it did not need to be. I do not understand why Lutz family was barging into the shop trying to take him back. You could have easily changed up some of the events and had it made sense. Have the episode start with Benno offering Lutz some sort of adoption offer. He then tells his parents and then they freak out. I do not get why he offered to adopt him half way through which would probably just increase the issue.
They were barging into the store because Lutz had been away for several days at that point and had started to get wild ideas about why he's been gone for so long.
Any other confusion comes from your usual anime adaptation compression.
Yay a lutz themed episode. Last few have focused on the orphans and Main so it’s nice to get some shine for best boy. Sad he’s been going through such a tough time with his living situation, tho.
Who knew the head priest actually had a heart lol: https://imgur.com/a/aA1DW0x
Very beautiful/emotional episode today. The meeting with Lutz’s parents and the head-priest was a great opportunity for each of them to air out how they truly felt and understand each other better. Just goes to show how you can live with someone and not even really know them.
We got a nice parallel to Lutz and his parents in the form of Main learning the head priest’s actual name. All the time they’ve spent together and she didn’t know something as basic as that. Nice touch there. Can’t wait for the next one 🙂
Sadly this episode reeks of badly written drama. Like a family sitcom where they want drama but also want nothing to change so it's all just a misunderstanding.
The difference was a little more subtle in the light novels because it had more time to delevop, but it was obvious that they cared about Lutz all along, even if they sometimes showed it a little oddly and were selfish ("We are older, we need more food. We do physical work, we need more food."). They do care of Lutz even if they were wrong in their justifications. Them skipping the parts where Lutz got his mother's approval and how she reacted to the brothers taking stuff from him hindered this part of the story since there wasn't really any build-up.
EDIT: I got a feeling that his mother approving might have been in the anime after all, so I edited my comment. Was it? Anyway, the way it affected Lutz's daily life wasn't shown enough.
The mother approving his apprenticeship was in the anime, they hugged and all.
It was corny, then the next day he was working as a merchant.
Well that went by quickly.
It's totally the anime's fault.
Dude be glad this anime isn't as awfull as Knights & Magic where they removed entire arcs because no robots tho, and then they removed the entire BUILDING A ROBOT from the BULDING A ROBOT anime.
They cut stuff from that one? I liked that one alot. Wished they'd get another season.
It's all well and good to tell Lutz to take responsibility for choosing a difficult path, but ya can't be saying that while actively making it harder on purpose!
So did ya'll miss the fact that this is a story set during a time period similar to the middle ages? They start working at the age of 7 and most often can't chose what to work with
Although Lutz parents do have a communication problem, ideals and thoughts were very different back then. It's not supposed to reflect on today's society at all and the fact that Lutz parents even let him chose to be a merchant is a huge thing in the world of honzuki
The ones I don't like are Lutz brothers, they're just mean asf
His parents really aren't as bad as the anime makes them out, but ya even in the LN his brother are kinda bad. They do have a neat chapter where the three of them go hunting together which does show a more brotherly dynamic (and that one of his brothers is scared to death of Myne due to being force choked in the woods)
Parents don't DECIDE your job. They are able to get you an apprenticeship through their connections. A well connected family can get you better opportunities.
My favorite episode. This feels so real and relateable. We also catch a glimpse of the head priest's own personal dilemmas. How he acts as mediator and as a person of authority here---which he is, but rarely do you see that sort of thing unfold organically in any show, especially in anime. I love how this show tackles a lot of the daily struggles and tensions of real life, and also the sense of awkwardness about it. Nice and bittersweet.
I felt that was cheap they saying that Lutz family was actually suportive, the mother and brothers going to his work to harass him was the type of abuse that i only seen coworkers suffer from abusive former SOs.
>But if I leaned on you, you’d collapse under my weight.
I’m so happy we got an episode focused on best boy Lutz. He’s always been there for Main, and it’s rare chance to see the challenges he is pressured with when he decided to be an apprentice to Benno. Speaking of Benno, bless Benno for offering to adopt him and entrusting him with the store.
Geez. So many people mad over the parents. I enjoyed this episode.
All that mess because of a misunderstanding. But if Lutz was told to do what he wants, why did all his siblings AND his mother make all that racket at the shop? He was just following daddy's order to do what he wanted.
Because they didnt expect him to follow through on his idea to be a live-in apprentice with the "hated" merchant. I mean they did expect him to "do what he wanted" but they expected/assumed that he would cleave to their authority enough to remain with them since they love him. Since lutz is young they didnt expect lutz to actually up and leave and not come back for days so they assumed the worst. They severely miscalculated their influence and how much lutz wanted to leave them and was just waiting for a reason to do so. Since they assumed that lutz didnt know what he was doing in their mind someone mustve been trying to take him away from his family so they charged in with the intent to get him away from that influence.
I think many people complaining here are taking our present day education for granted. Something as simply describing an emotion is difficult you don't know the word to best convey the message.
For example:
The ______ person hit the wall.
Now imagine not knowing how to convey the words "angry", "frustrated", "annoyed", "shocked". How else would you be able to convey the context of this message with such a limited vocalabary? There is a need for additional information which didn't happen initially due to frustration from both sides (Lutz and parents) making assumptions.
So in this context, the emotion of "worried" or "concern" was not able to be communicated and it was only identified when Lutz' father mention the dangers of travel.
tl;dr imagine not knowing the words to describe even basic emotions due to the lack of education/schooling.
Thinking that just because it's a long time ago means they're basically apes isn't any better. Deid is the only one shown to act like this and his wife even says he's bad at talking. The show itself is saying its just Deid being Deid.
The words Deid needed to convey have existed in every language since the dawn of language. It's not like we're talking opia or sonder. I bet not even Main knows what vellichor is.
I'm simplying the issue and you are correct to raise this counterpoint. Bad example but I believe the point stands on some merit. Given how people are blaming 5G towers spreading corona virus even in today's society, its not entirely out of the ballpark.
Keep in mind that in Honzuki no Gekkuhou, travelling is frowned upon and diversification of knowledge is limited as there isn't any books to capture it and/or intenionally withheld. Coupled that people grew up in a caste/class model and often followed what their parents did, its not hard to imagine a low education baseline where conveying certain emotions can be difficult.
