we have Tanya's world start its own version of Stalingrad, with one of its problems being the supplies just running out. And this passes the sniff test with flying colours
it really didn't understand logistics. They honestly believed that the answer to "We've got enough supplies for X number of days, during which you can get Y number of kilometers," was "Well, then we'll get to Y in fewer days!"
this apparently is one of the things that helps explain Barbarossa. In the short campaigns of the early war it wasn't too bad,
but once you got past 1941 and hostilities that couldn't be ended in a matter of months, it was an albatross around their necks.
the leadership saying that they just want to "win the war" with little idea of what this looks like passes the sniff test,
this lack of an understanding of grand strategy was something that dogged the German army from Moltke the Elder onwards. And, as I mentioned in a previous post, the Germans in WW1 didn't even have victory conditions when they invaded Belgium.

About their logistics failures, the LNs have Zettour complaining about the impossible work environment basically from the beginning,
the anime has Tanya drive this point in when she's in Norden and uses enough cream on her coffee to make it spill over.
And prior to his exile from the HQ the logistics division was in so much trouble that they'd been requisitioning farm animals to drag carts, knowing that it would ruin their harvests.
And with him not overseeing it, things start to break down even faster.

the cause of the conflict seems to me more related to the Empire getting too “strong” and so “dangerous” to the other neighboring nations
There is a reason to doubt Tanya saying it was defensive. Tanya is across the border and in position against an artillery piece before the open of hostilities.
In both WWI and WWII it was extremely common for aggression to be claimed self defense. The Nazis went so far as to stage fake attacks against their border positions with German soldiers wearing Polish uniforms.
In short, the Entente Alliance was free to proclaim its actions as justified on the domestic front, but the treaty showed that in reality, the international community practically universally sided with the Empire.
actually had the balls to describe this invasion as a “highly organized hiking exercise under pressure” at a press conference.
Tanya was in "disputed" territory (disputed by the Entente) and was training spotting for the imperial artillery before the training flight turned real. And yes training, because the empire thought that no way would they be so stupid as to actually invade.

Yes the empire didnt start the war. It was the entante alliance who attacked the empire in norden (disputed zone).
Other countries joined in on the war against the empire in fear of it growing too strong.

Ildoa is the Empire's ally on paper, but in reality they consider themselves neutral, and they're not really willing to help. And this passes the sniff test, absolutely. In fact, this is basically what happened between Germany and Italy in WW1.
Italy started as an ally of Germany (but a rival of Austria), and as soon as a shooting war started, declared neutrality. It was only after much courting by the Entente (along with promises of being able to take territory from Austria) that they did enter the war...against Germany and Austria.
Tanya's version of Italy doing a really good impression of our version of WW1 Italy holds water. And speaking of water...

Left to their own devices, the engineers would not make a connection that insane...
...except that we literally see Tanya (a Japanese salaryman and apparent military history buff in a little girl's body) suggest it to them.
So, the mechanism for them to come up with the idea exists, and thus it is a thing that can happen in a world war in Tanya's world.
I think the kaiten are not quite the best comparison here, since they were not designed for the pilot to survive.
There's a lot more nations that all developed human torpedoes that are a lot more similar to the ones depicted in Youjo Senki, in particular for the fact that they were meant to be rode on by frogmen rather than piloted form the inside.
Incidentally the Ildoans Italians were the first to come up with the concept with their famous "maiale".

They can see at night... (specifically 0 light) with magic They can make their own oxygen... with magic They can ignore the underwater pressure by guess what?... with magic.
For some reason the mages didn't think of an underwater attack so they were completely blindsided when the torpedo mages after blowing up boats rose up from the water BEHIND the enemy mages and quickly took them out.
Since Tanya and co are walking(flying) nukes, they blow up MORE ships with their rifles almost making the torpedo point moot.
At this point I'm having trouble figuring out why the navy is mostly aircraft carriers that carry mages instead of aircraft.
You could see that even high ranking mages couldn't endure as long as Tanya did. Even short distance underwater was extremely taxing.

both the HMS Hood and Ark Royal go to the bottom of the ocean. This is unconventional, but it does pass the sniff test.
The reason it is unconventional is that submarines were traditionally raiders of sea lanes. Intercepting shipping was something they were very good at, while going head to head with destroyers was something they were not very good at.
But, if a submarine had an opportunity to take down a capital ship, they would generally take it. As I recall, in WW1 a submarine snuck into Scapa Flow and sunk a battleship,
and in WW2 an American submarine sunk the largest aircraft carrier (the Japanese Shinano, which was a conversion of a Yamato class battleship) of the war.
That said, taking on capital ships was extremely risky, and one unlucky U-boat in WW1 got sunk after being rammed by H.M.S. Dreadnought, making it, as far as I know, the only battleship to ever kill a U-boat.
Scapa Flow raid was the very well known Günther Priens boat U-47 in WWII, firing 7 eels plus a tube runner.

Tanya’s contribution (as is often the case) is taking a proven tactic, and rejiggering it with magic shenanigans to create a weapon that didn’t exist before.
Magic lets Tanya do it against maneuvering warships in open ocean however which certainly was not possible irl.
This passes the sniff test, but if it wasn't for the ground rules, I'd make it conditional. In the world wars, the Royal Navy would withdraw if losses got too great or the situation too untenable. However, it's what followed that makes this a conditional pass: the Royal Navy was bloodthirsty and VERY vindictive.
the Royal Navy would suffer a few bloody noses, and withdraw...for the time being. Then, they would scour the seas of any enemy vessels.
By the time the Battle of Jutland took place, the operational German navy was the U-boats - every other regular German surface ship that wasn't part of their Dreadnought fleet had been sunk.
A similar thing happened in WW2. When the British lost surface assets to the Germans, they then hunted down any German surface fleet ships they could get their hands on.

What's notable about the war in the Pacific is that the British didn't inflict this on the Japanese - this was in part because they had to concentrate on the Germans at the time, but also because the Americans had become a naval power as well, and were very clear that the Pacific was their ocean.
So, I would like to make the sniff test pass conditional on the Royal Navy starting to hunt down the Empire's surface assets, but the ground rules do state that something not happening in Tanya's world that did happen in ours is NOT a grounds for criticism, and therefore I don't get to.
I can't imagine the notBritish public to take the sinking of the Hood very well.
I'd imagine this timeline still has Hood as the pride of the Royal navy that'd go on the Empire cruises and I'd presume it was the flagship with the admiral and all others lost with her.
That's a heavy blow to take which the ministry of information will spin to galvanized the public and you also have the uboat of imperial mages cheerfully and very publicaly sail into notItaly.
As you said every time a nation bloodied the nose of the British navy they always came back with a vengeance, they hunted down Bismarck with everything they had available before she could slip back to safety and smashed it into a floating hulk

Tanya has replaced this timeline's Bismarck.
Would there be any time taken to try to figure out what just happened, or would the Royal Navy new doctrine just be "sometimes Empire mages can sink our Battleships and Carriers from underwater. Good luck."?

I will state that the food passed the sniff test. And the taste test. And now I'm hungry. DAMN YOU, TANYA!
it has also happened on the battlefield - I have read about Red Army soldiers being absolutely amazed when they entered Germany and began seeing what was inside of German homes
The Empire is starting to consider conquering Ildoa, and this absolutely passes the sniff test. Funnily enough, while H●tler did have plans to conquer Switzerland, it's not Germany that comes to mind when I think of historical examples, but the WW2 Allies. In particular, the Allies and Iceland.
The big problem in the Battle of the Atlantic was an air gap that allowed U-boats to operate unencumbered in the mid-Atlantic. There was a location that could close the gap: Iceland.
Unfortunately for the Allies, Iceland was neutral at the time, and wanted nothing to do with the war.
So, in 1940, to deny Germany the use of the island and close the air gap, Britain just landed troops and occupied Iceland, started flying planes from it, and closed the mid-Atlantic gap.

And it wasn't just Britain - they were the first of the Allies in Iceland, but Canada and America followed (notable because the United States was not yet in the war when they landed
the idea of a belligerent deciding to take over a potential ally to secure their territory and support absolutely holds water, and we Canadians (and Americans, and Brits) would know, because we did it to Iceland.
I just read the wikipedia article on the Allied Occupation of Iceland and it's an interesting part of History, that was never talked about in my school.
But that is mostly owed to the fact that I live and grew up in germany and there being a lot more important lessons to be learned from the war
It's likely that the empire will, if successful in occupying it, drain a lot of resources from the country to seriously lower living standarts. The empire has serious economic and logistical trouples that they will want to correct, after all.
With the economy taking a turn for the worse AND the loss of sovereignty, there won't be much room to spin this in a positive light. This might be a part where the Empire bites off more than it can chew because keeping Ildoa occupied might be the logistical impossible thing with an active war going on on other fronts.

EDIT: Sorry for saying "interesting" all the time

We see some war planning this episode, and this both passes the sniff test and fails it at the same time. So, starting with the positive...
The general staff coming up with war plans to invade Ildoa passes the sniff test with flying colours. This is their literal job.
As far as I know, the US army has war plans for invading Canada, even though this would almost certainly never happen.
Pre-WW1 Germany in particular had a big problem with war plans that couldn't be carried out - Schlieffen's writing is fascinating in part because the secret alliance between Russia and Germany fell apart the year he was appointed Chief of the General Staff, and he knew that Germany couldn't win a two-front war.
Where this then fails the sniff test is in what those plans are: we get a discussion of carrying out a blitzkrieg. There's a huge problem with this (and it's one that exists in the light novels)...several, in fact - they're called "mountains."

The Italian front was weird and difficult even by WW1 standards (imagine having to do trench warfare on a mountain face, and you start to get the idea).
In WW2, the Germans were able to take over Italy after the fall of Mussolini not through an invasion, but through activating the units that were already there (they had arrived by rail).
Could it in any way be possible that there are no Ildoan alps (or at least different ones from Italy)? I mean, it's reasonable enough to assume it's the same, but... who knows
The empire counts modern day Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia as their territory. They could just go around the Alps with their occupying force while mages and paratroopers take control of enemy garrisons.
It's probably not a good plan, but they're grasping at straws even without this potential invasion.
I mean even then the only way you can really invade from is from the East because the Alps protect the North and the West

well... as the 12 Battles of Isonzo show even the East isn't the best terrain to fight on. Even if it's a bit better for Not!Germany because they'll have the high ground IIRC.
we see Tanya having a "What the hell?!" reaction to a Blitzkrieg through the mountains...well, her reaction passes the sniff test because the invasion (as mentioned before) does not, because of the MOUNTAINS.
it is because of said mountains that Churchill's insistence that Italy was "the soft underbelly of Europe" was met with disbelief by his military advisors. Italy might be soft, but the Italian Alps were very much not.

We see a discussion in which Tanya is very careful about giving advice to the Foreign Ministry, and this passes the sniff test.
In our world, there was a serious division between the WW1 German military and the civilian government, to the point that the relationship between the general staff and the Foreign Ministry tended to involve the foreign ministry telling the chief of the general staff "Here is what we're doing this year,"
Schlieffen's predecessor, Waldersee, was pretty much turfed out of the position for trying to be too political, so the tiptoeing around giving advice makes perfect sense.
we have a serious discussion of the calculation of war guilt that passes the sniff test and then some, and this was a major factor in the end of WW1.
unlike WW2, WW1 started with the great powers all getting into trouble and then not being able to get out of it
there's a great exploration of this in Christopher Clark's The Sleepwalkers, which I STRONGLY recommend reading

even though in retrospect Germany probably had a more or less equal share of the war guilt with everybody else, and everybody on the Western Front had an aggressive strategy that involved, um, violating Belgian neutrality
they were the ones who entered Belgium first. As such, they ended up carrying the war guilt. It's a wonderfully realistic discussion in that regard. Unfortunately...
...well, we have to get to the elephant in the room, which is the explanation that war happened because the Empire is just too powerful and therefore had to be knocked down
European great power politics of the early 20th century did not work that way. Germany defeated France in 1871, and was welcomed to the table.
Japan defeated Russia in 1905 and gained similar recognition.
the rules say that just because great power politics work a certain way in our world, them working a different way in Tanya's world is not by itself grounds for criticism. Therefore, it gets a conditional pass based on those rules...but that's the only reason I'm not giving it a fail.

I wonder about the fact that the empire is negotiating with the allies as a unified block, rather than every opponent individually. Does that pass the sniff test?
I imagine they would have much more leverage negotiating with, say, the Republic than with everyone at once. And if they could convince one part to leave the coalition in return for peace and occupied territory, that would leave them in a much stronger position against everyone else.
I think it does. Throughout WW2 there was an agreement among the Allies that none of them would seek a separate peace with Germany.

原文は「an albatross around their necks」(首に掛かったアホウドリ)。
