In between the crude humour with the rainbow pukes (RIP landlord) and explicit shitting scene, this show managed to also highlight the dangers of smoking beyond the obvious health one.

The sister is obviously younger, I thought implied to be a teenager, and her mention of her doing homework when her older sister calls at night seemed to me to imply she was still in like, probably high school. I don't think it's middle school or younger. And I mean, it could be college, but even that doesn't mean she still couldn't be living at home and commuting.

At first i thought the writers were trying to go for some low effort, crude humor. After seeing the rest of the episode, however, I now think that their objective was to make us hate the main character

This is the reality and the writers have gone full in. Some people might watch it and think it’s over the top, but it isn’t at all. That’s what makes it so powerful.

第二に、ここまで下品なギャグをやるとは思ってなかった。完全に不意を突かれた。PVを一切見てなかったから、鬱屈したチェーンスモーカーの話を真面目一本でやるんだと思ってた。
誤解しないでほしいけど、肺がんの夢から目覚めるヤニ子とか、顔に煙を吹きかけられて暴力的だった父親を思い出しパニック発作を起こす大家さんとか、本当に重い場面もちゃんとあった。でもまさかそれがウンコネタと同居するとはなあ。
ヤニ子のことは気の毒に思うし、タバコをやめてほしいと願う妹のことは特にそう。ネタとしては笑えるけど、この作品はニコチン依存の怖さを伝える立派な啓発作品だし、最後はヤニ子が人生を立て直して終わってほしいと本気で思ってる。素晴らしい第1話だったし、続きが楽しみ。

Studio Bibury really cooked with this one, and this isn't even their big anime of the season! We still have Hyakkano S3 airing this weekend!

Don't get me wrong! There were genuinely depressing scenes like [Yakineko waking up after her lung cancer dream](https://i.imgur.com/pNfTmGU.jpeg) or the [landlord having a panic attack](https://i.imgur.com/AW7ZfQa.jpeg) after Yakineko blew smoke in his face, which reminded him of his abusive father. I'd like to say that I can fix Yaniko, but damn, after watching the first episode, she really seems unfixable. How is it possible that she and Imoko are sisters?

Overall, this first episode was pure degeneracy, if I had to describe it in a few words. It's definitely not an anime you should show a normal person, hahaha!

I'll certainly check out the next episodes, but I really hope that it won't be more of the same, and Yaniko will somehow get better, even if just a little.

I am SO glad I do not have an addictive personality. My smoking stint barely lasted a quarter of one college year.

高校とか大学で付き合いのために吸って、それきりやめる人がいる一方で、やめられずに日ごとに本数が増えていく人もいる。その違いが本当に面白い。知り合いに、友達と仲違いしたのをきっかけに「これで最後、人生をやり直す」と言って最後の一箱を吸い切った人がいる。そしたらそれっきり、二度と吸わなかった。

I find it so interesting how some people smoke for social situations for like high school or college, and then just stop. Others can't stop smoking and end up doing more every day. I know someone that smoked their last pack by just saying that's it i want to start a new life after breaking up with a friend. Then bam...never again.

I went into this blind expecting a neko that works a normal job or something and has a mildly normal life, but happens to smoke. This was not at all what I was expecting lmao. Still, it was funny, but I hope it ends up having some actual plot (no, I don't mean "plot" it already has that).

Picked this up last minute on a whim just because Bibury was animating it and this sure was something. Most artistic anti-smoking PSA ever?

冒頭のシーンがあんな終わり方をするとは思ってなかった。大家さんのくだりは笑ったけど、ヤニ子のあの絵面は要らなかった。汚すぎる。

I was not prepared for how that opening scene going to end, the landlord made me laugh but I did not need those visuals from Yaniko, that was gross.

半年くらい前にタバコをやめたんだけど、それまでの自分の生活はほぼヤニ子と同じだった。
自分を気にかけてくれる人がほとんどいない（あるいは、変えようとするのをもうやめられた）チェーンスモーカーの生活の描写として、これ以上なく正確だ。
第1話のほとんどの場面が腹に一発もらったみたいだった。自分の人生を第三者の視点から見てるようで、正直このアニメを最後まで見られるか分からない。
でも全体としては、これで禁煙できる人もいるだろうし、かなり良い作品だと思う。

I quit smoking roundabout six months ago, before that my life was pretty much like Yanis.
It is the most accurate depiction of the life of a chainsmoking person with almost no one who cares about you (or stopped trying to change you).

Almost every scene in the first episode felt like a punch right in my guts for it is like I have seen my own life from 3rd person, and I dont know if I am capable of finishing this anime.

But overall, it may help some people to stop smoking and it is a pretty good series.

1話にギャグを詰め込みすぎ。1分くらいの短いネタを20本つなぎ合わせて1話にしました、って感じがする。
ただ全体の出来には脱帽するしかない。この作品の絵と動きは本当にすごい（そして汚い）。
来週は同じ調子じゃないといいな。ちゃんと構成のある話になるか、せめてギャグ路線のままでもいいから、1本あたりがもう少し長く続くようになってほしい。

There's just wayy too many gag jokes in one episode. It feels like they've stitched together 20 short 1 minute clips into one episode and called it a day.
Although I do have to give them credits to the overall production. This show's art and animation is so great (and disgusting).

Hopefully next week's episode isn't the same. I really hope it'll have an actual story with structure, or at the very least stick it'll stick to the gag comedy structure, but with each gag lasting longer than 1 minute.

あの継ぎはぎみたいな演出、自分には意外とハマった。

The patchwork directing worked surprisingly well for me.

前情報ゼロでこの話を見た。原作も読んでいなかったけど、OPだけで原作を読みたくなった。
この世界と、そこから伝わってくる感情が本当に好きだ。自分も似たような時期を通ってきたから特にそう思う（タバコ依存ではなかったけど、正直どんな依存でもこの話に当てはまる）。散らかった部屋、生き死にへの投げやりなふり、それ以外にも鬱のサインがたくさんある。身近な人の助けを断るのは、恥ずかしくて、心配をかけたくなくて、自分の人生がめちゃくちゃに見えるから（最初のうちは）。依存から少しずつ抜け出す苦しさと、それを口に出すことの難しさ（最後の場面で、主人公が当たり障りのないメッセージ以外に何を言えばいいか分からずにいるところで、ちょっと泣いた）。
もう一度言うけど、自分は原作を知らないし、この話が本当にそこまで扱うのかは分からない。でも多くの人が「うわ、汚い、ｗ」で反応してる中で（実は結構な人が裏のテーマに心当たりがあると思うけど）、自分はここに深みを感じたし、それがちゃんと掘り下げられることを願ってる。続きを心待ちにする数少ないアニメになるのは間違いない（作画にも当然ぶっ飛ばされた）。

Well, I watched this episode without knowing anything about it beforehand ; I hadn’t read the original manga, but the opening sequence alone made me want to check it out.

I LOVED this world and the emotions it conveys, especially since I went through a similar period in my own life (not because of a cigarette addiction, but honestly, any kind of addiction could fit this story). A messy apartment, a feigned nonchalance about life and death and plenty of other signs linked to depression : Refusing help from loved ones because we’re just ashamed and don’t want to worry anyone, since our whole life just seems like a mess (at first). The struggle to gradually break free from addiction, and the difficulty of talking about it (the final scene where the protagonist doesn’t know what to say besides a reassuring message made me cry a little c: ).

I’ll say it again: I’m not familiar with the source material, and I don’t know if the story actually deals with these topics, but while many people reacted with “ew, lol, gross” (even though I think a lot of people might relate to the subtext) I see a depth there that I really hope will be explored further. It’s definitely going to be one of the few anime series where I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next episodes (and the animation blew me away, of course).

自分の理解では、Netflixで配信されてるのは「邪龍版」だか何だかっていうやつ。修正っぽいものはトイレにモザイクがかかってたところくらいで、あれはどのバージョンでも同じだと思う。あとは虹色のゲロだけど、あれはアニメでよくあるギャグだしね。

My understanding is Netflix is showing the evil dragon version or whatever it was called. The only 'censorship' I noticed was the pixelated toilet but I feel like that's going to be every version. Well and the rainbow vomit but that is a common joke in anime.

ついに「これマジで自分じゃん」と言える女性主人公が出てきた。男が自己投影系の異世界ものを見るのって、こういう感じなんだろうな。

Finally, a female main character where I can say “she just like me for real”. This must be what it’s like to be a man watching those self insert isekais

豆知識：主人公のヤニ子が吸っているタバコは実在の銘柄。「メビウス」といって、日本ではタバコを売っている店（コンビニやスーパーなど）ならどこにでも置いてある。
580円とやや高めの部類で、ヤニ子の金の無さを考えると、これを吸っているところに彼女の「将来に備える気の無さ」と「バカさ加減」が出ていて、見ていてなかなか笑える。
ちなみに途中で買うメンソールのタバコも同じメビウスのシリーズで、「メビウス・プレミアムメンソール・オプション」という商品。メンソールだけどフィルターにカプセルが入っていて、潰して吸うとブルーベリーの味が楽しめるのが特徴。
そしてこの作品で一番おかしいのは、JT（日本のタバコ会社）が、このタバコを実名・実物のパッケージのまま出すのを許可したこと。
よく見るとクレジットにJTの名前が入ってる。
このアニメは明らかに喫煙の悪い面しか描いていないので、クレジットにJTの名前を見たときは「JTは正気を失ったのか？」と思った。

Fun Fact: The cigarettes that the main character, Yani-neko, smokes are a real brand.
They’re called "Mebius", and in Japan, you’ll find them in every store that sells cigarettes (convenience stores, supermarkets, etc).
Since they cost 580 yen, which is on the expensive side, and considering how broke Yani-neko is, seeing her smoke these cigarettes highlights her "lack of concern for saving for the future" and her "silliness", which makes it pretty funny to watch.
Incidentally, the menthol cigarettes she buys partway through the story are also from the Mebius brand.
They’re called "Mebius Premium Menthol Option". Although they’re menthol cigarettes, they feature a capsule in the filter; when you crush it and inhale, you can enjoy a blueberry flavor. that’s what makes them unique.

And the craziest thing about this show is that JT (a Japanese tobacco company) allowed these cigarettes to appear in the series using their real names and actual packaging.
If you look closely, you’ll see JT’s name in the credits.
Since this anime clearly focuses only on the negative aspects of smoking, when I saw JT’s name in the credits, I thought, "Has JT lost its mind?"

I’ve never smoked so I’m curious to those who have or are currently heavily smoking, does watching something like this discourage you to smoke or make you wanna smoke more or just indifferent?

昔は1日1箱から1箱半吸ってた（だから英題の「チェーンスモーキング」ってやつに当てはまるのかも）けど、ここ何年かはだいたい1日1〜2本しか吸ってない。
だから観ても吸いたくなるわけでも、吸うのをやめたくなるわけでもないな。ただ、昔に比べればぜんぜん吸ってないぶん、ここで描かれてるみたいな面倒ごと、あの散らかりようみたいなものを背負わずに済んでるのは、ちょっとホッとする。
それはそれとして、なぜか妙にヤニ子に惹かれる。

Well, years ago I used to smoke a pack to a pack and a half a day (so maybe this could be considered "chain smoking", as in the English title here), but for many years now typically smoke only one to two cigs a day.

So watching it doesn't necessarily make me feel compelled to smoke or not smoke, but maybe a little happy or relieved of not smoking nearly as much comparatively to the past, so that I don't have to deal with some of the complications depicted here, in terms of like the extra mess.

But also somehow strangely drawn in by and attracted to Yaniko.

This cat is a trainwreck. Like I kinda expected it from the trailer, but she's actually worse than I thought. I don't, I don't think things are gonna end well. Here's hoping kitty turns her life around for the better because yikes

ブラックコメディとして面白い。汚部屋でダメな暮らしをしてる女の話っていう発想が笑える。ただ、なんでキャラの何人かを人間っぽいねこにしたのかはよく分からない。下ネタはちょっとキツいのもあった、下痢のところとか。でもハゲのおっさんが盛り上がっちゃう場面は爆笑した。
あのハゲが子供のころ、父親の酒を買いに行かされてた場面は不思議だった。あんな小さい子に店が売るか？たぶんあの人は40代以上だと思うけど、昔の日本ではよくあったことなのかな。あと子供時代の顔がほんとにボビー・ヒルそっくりだった。
それと、あれだけのニコチンパッチを買う金をどうやって工面したのか説明がない。あんなに買ったらタバコと同じくらい高くつくぞ。むしろベイプに行かないのが意外だ

Funny dark comedy. A show about a degenerate woman living in squalor is a funny idea. I'm not sure I understand why they made a bunch of the characters human like cats though. Some of the jokes were kind of nasty, like when she got diahrrea but the part where the bald guy whacked his meat was hilarious,

The part when the bald guy was a kid and had to buy his dad booze and alcohol was strange though, like a store would have sold that to a little kid? I'm guessing the guy is at least in his 40s and idk if that was more common in Japan back then. Also as a kid he REALLY looked like Bobby Hill

Also they didn't explain how she got money for all those nicotine patches, those can be almost as expensive as cigarettes if you buy that many. I'm surprised she doesn't vape

ねこにしてるのは、このキャラたちがまともで上品な社会の側にいないってことを示すためかもしれない。1話を見る限り、ねこは依存症（ヤニ子、これから出てくるであろう薬物や酒の面々）か、安い労働力（ヤニ子）か、笑いものにされる側（カンサイ、芸人っぽい）のどれかだ。人種や先住民や被差別部落の人たちの扱われ方を、観てる側を過剰に身構えさせずに置き換える手段としてもよく出来てる。OPには伝統衣装っぽいのを着たねこもいるし。
あと、ねこじゃなかったら観てる側が感情移入しやすくなって、一気に重くなると思う。ねこ耳フィルターがあってさえ、もう十分すぎるほど重くてリアルだって人がいるんだから。
日本のことは知らないけど、うちの国だと田舎の子はいまだに、コンビニやスーパーみたいな規制がかからない近所の個人商店でタバコや酒を買える。

The cats might be there to show how the characters are not a part of normal, polite society. Going off ep 01, the cats are either addicts (yaniko, future druggie/alcoholic characters), cheap labor (yaniko), or a butt of jokes (kansai, who seems to be a comedian). It's also a decent stand in for how people from different races/indigenous groups/nationalities/burakumin are treated without the audience getting too up in arms about it. From the OP, one of the cats is in traditional tribal clothing.

Also if they weren't cats, people would be able to relate to them easier, and then s**t would get depressing so much faster. It's already depressing and too real for some viewers despite the catgirl filter.

Dunno about Japan but where I live, a kid from the boonies can still buy smokes and booze from a small neighborhood store that isn't subject to the same regulations as convenience stores or groceries.

I enjoyed this way more then I expected. Some people say it stresses them out, but it actually nice to watch someone who's life is more messed up than your own.
